Browns have 'astronomical grade' on Texas A&M's Myles Garrett, per source

As the 0-12 Cleveland Browns get closer to clinching the No. 1 overall pick, there is a real chance that the team will not use its top pick on a quarterback.

The Browns have what one source close to the situation described as an "astronomical grade" on Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett, a blue-chip prospect who would dramatically upgrade Cleveland's defense. The Browns are enamored with Garrett, according to the source.

Taking Garrett would upgrade the defense but also would likely deny the Browns the chance to take the top-rated quarterback in the draft. But Cleveland is doing its due diligence on quarterbacks. Browns scout Lake Dawson, who once starred at Notre Dame, has spent an inordinate amount of time in South Bend scouting quarterback DeShone Kizer, according to a school source. Many expect Kizer, a junior, to announce he will turn pro as soon as this week.

The Browns could also look to address the quarterback position through a trade, as some believe they will make a run at New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after the season. The Browns and Patriots have been trade partners twice this season.

Even if the Browns go with Garrett with their No. 1 selection, Cleveland still has an extra first-round draft pick, compliments of the Philadelphia Eagles, to pursue the quarterback it wants.

The Browns lead the San Francisco 49ers (1-11) in the race to the bottom and the first overall pick in April.

only in Cleveland does the smokescreen start the first part of December ... already trying to garner interest? or is this legit?

It is hard to take these reports seriously, but I would be very happy if the Browns could come away w/Garrett and Jimmy G w/their first two picks.

But, we'l probably draft Watson w/the first overall and then trade down w/our second first round pick and say something smart like "we're building through the draft."

I'd be happy with Garrett... Of course I'm assuming that we'll win 2 games at the end of the year and draft like 5th overall...

Vers, I agree 100% with you.

This dumbass franchise would choose Watson and trade down over Garrett + Jimmy G. I can't express enough how much Haslams incompetence terrifies me. I'm starting to believe conspiracy theories that he wants to intentionally drive down fan support so he can move the team.

Teams with 4 or less wins to date.

Cle - 0
SF - 1
Jax - 2
Jets - 3
Chi - 3
LA rams - 4
Carolina - 4
Cincy - 4

My guess is that we win 2 games
3 wins is unrealistic (yea, I know 2 is pretty unrealistic but it's definitely a Browns thing to do).
So we then end up with the 3rd pick based on SOS
Garrett goes #1
Allen goes #2

We don't need a QB yet. We need an OL first. But this guy would definitely be one you change your direction on if you were going OL first.

Definitely take this guy.

So is he an LB or a DE? Looked to me like a DE. Very tired of taking a guy who is awesome at one position and making him irrelevant or at best OK at another.

Lol, drat season "reports" and speculations.

Um...EVERYONE has a "insert adjective here" grade on Garrett.

All teams that need a QB are gonna scout all the QBs.

Don't know. Just a Browns thing to do to screw us out of the top tier of draft prospect which this year happens to be Garrett and Allen.

Cincy has only 4 wins
Bills - 5
SD - 6

Not exactly a juggernaut of a schedule

True, but no one is using the term juggernaut when referring to us either.

We continue to hear that the Browns want to change the "culture" in Cleveland..

..drafting Garrett, a guy who only puts out when he decides to put out..what kind of culture does that set?

This season, Garrett has been loafing on the field from game one.

He has had some good games when going unblocked or against teams that attempt to trap him. But I feel he was exposed when he went up against Robinson, the Bama LT who dominated Garrett when blocking him one on one.

Exactly
Seems like every year i have a top tier of prospects
And every year we win just enough games to land 1-2 spots away from that group of players.

If I like 5 guys we draft in the 6 or 7 spot.
If we draft 5th then I like 3-4

This year I have 2 in the top tier, so it only makes sense that we will end up with the #3 overall pick.

Uh Garrett has an ankle injury, he's not Clowney.

I feel like based on your assessment you never watched him prior to this year.

Well............I actually think that the Browns should draft Garrett.

He is a true impact player that teams will have to scheme around. We let both Von Miller and Khalil Mack slip by due to similar arguments that mac and others are making.

I think drafting Garrett is a no-brainer.

I'm fine with Garrett ... I do prefer Allen because he has a leader/nasty mentality. If we're looking to truly change our culture, he'd be a smart pick (plus he's GOOD). If we think Garrett will give the same consistent effort, then he'll be great too

I don't remember scouting Miller but I do Mack. I don't remember him having any effort issues. I actually thought he was a high effort guy. Seems like the issue with Mack was that he played for Buffalo and there were questions about his competition. However he owned OSU and was clearly the best player on the field that day.

I don't understand why the haters trash Watson.

Acting like we can't have Garrett and Watson, like his has to be either or.

But it makes sense. Vers and candy love trash ass quarterback play.

Let's getting another fail patriot QB backup to lead our franchise to greatness, Because there are so many other shiny examples of that happening around the league.

We don't like guys who have taken their team to greatness in college? Nah, let's get some bums who had an ok year in trubisky, or a quarterback who got benched in college in Kizer.

Or better yet, let's get ANOTHER backup to try and lead our franchise, because that has always had great success here in cleveland.

Hoyer, mallet, and cassel are just hall of fame QB's. Look at them all leading their franchises to glory this season!!!

This is a great line, but generally ignores the fact that Jimmy G was the 3rd or 4th best QB in the draft. Considering how well Bridgewater and Carr are doing, it's extremely promising for him.

So was Mallet when he came out. Look at the hype he got around here.

Ryan Mallet was the 7th QB taken that draft. No one really liked him in the draft either. Everyone thought he was crap and had a worse attitude. Drafted solely based on his physical attributes. Do you remember his bowl game against OSU? He was erratic and had awful decision making. That pretty much summed up his college career.

I wasn't talking about effort. I was talking about poking holes in an impact player's game.

We obviously all are not going to agree, but in my opinion, taking Garrett is the way to go. We need impact players.

As far as the "effort" thing goes, I could be mistaken, but it seems to a "thing" on this board. I really haven't heard his coaches, announcers, scouting services, etc trash him for his effort.

Here is the one thing I have read over and over: he is a physical freak. Here is an example:

Quote:
ESPN NFL draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay answered 25 questions about the upcoming 2017 NFL draft, and during the piece Kiper offered up huge praise for Texas A&M star Myles Garrett.
When asked which player in the class he thought would be the next great NFL pass rusher, Kiper put his money on Garrett. Here is what he said:

There's no question it's Texas A&M's Myles Garrett, who is No. 1 on my Big Board. He has everything teams want in a premier edge rusher. At 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, he's going to be a star.

Later McShay was asked which player(s) he thinks will be called athletic "freaks" at the NFL Combine, and he mentioned Garrett first.
Myles Garrett is the top all-around physical freak in this class. He'll test off the charts for a pass-rusher.

Ah, misunderstood

Garrett is definitely a physical freak, that's for sure.
He'll definitely tear up the combine.

If Garrett and Bosa were in the same draft, I would probably draft Garrett.

I would play him primarily at OLB. I don't think that he has the strength to be a 3-4 DE, but is overly strong to be an OLB. You could sneak him in at end when you get out of your base and have 4 or 5 man fronts.

Garrett's biggest problem is that he is so much faster than anybody else his size, that he hasn't developed a whole bunch of pass rushing moves and relies on his speed. In the NFL everybody has speed and he better have a few moves ready or he'll get out to a very slow start.

And yet people still wanted him.

Just like they wanted him when they found out that he was on the block, and eventually went to Houston.

Sorry, I don't want another career backup trying to ignite his career on this team.

Draft the guy.

We can easily have both Garrett and Watson. Or hell, even grab Chad Kelly in the 2ns or 3rd.

But I'm against Jimmy G.

People don't want Jimmy G because he's a Patriot. People want him because he was a good prospect. No one here is advocating we trade for Jacoby Brisset. Take the Patriots out of the equation and people would still be clamoring for him.

Maybe this is an oversimplification but come on man we are talking about the first pick in the draft.

If a team (Browns) can't identify the best player in the draft we have more than a serious problem.

It is beyond obvious that there is no quarterback in this draft that is worthy of being the number one pick.

There is a long way to go till draft day.

At this point I don't know who is the best player in the college football. But I don't believe that will be to hard to find out.

Trubisky and Kizer both show promise. But both players lack experience. They may both turn into great players but neither guy can truly be considered the best player in the draft when you look at starting in college for one year. The number one player in the draft should be almost risk free. Kizer and Trubisky are not risk free.

If Garrett is as good as most say and can be a great pass rusher than I am all for it.

As I have said getting Garrett and Garoppolo may well be the best case scenario.

At this point I still have a ways to go as far looking draft prospects.

I have seen Kizer in a few games. But I have not studied him. From what I have seen he shows promise. What does stick out is not what he can do. It is more of I don't see a guy who is comfortable in the position yet. When you watch a college quarterback who is ready to come out of college and play at the next level the game is easy for them. They have control of the offense. They are in command. I remember guys like Phillip Rivers and Luck. They were in total control as Seniors.

Kizer would be smart to play another year.
