Heading into what looks to be the final year of his rookie contract in 2017, many expect the New England Patriots to explore trading third-year quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. Starter Tom Brady is showing no signs of slowing down despite playing at 39 years of age, and a strong showing in three starts while Brady was suspended has Garoppolo’s trade value soaring.
With that in mind, the trade rumors are bound to run rampant and most of those rumors will be of very little substance. However, when a former Patriots and Cleveland Browns executive who is a close confidant of Bill Belichick floats one of those trade rumors, we have a tendency to believe it has a little life.
Mike Lombardi was on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak For Yourself” and connected the dots on Thursday.
“The next quarterback that’ll be the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback perhaps is Jimmy Garoppolo in New England,” said Lombardi, who is now a Fox Sports analyst. “I think Cleveland understands, (coach) Hue Jackson specifically understands he needs a quarterback. I think they’ll be very aggressive. I think Jimmy Garoppolo’s on top of their list, and I think they’ll go hard after him.”
And it’d make sense, too. The Browns desperately need a long-term option at quarterback and, while they currently hold the top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, a draft class that’s light on answers at the position may turn them to the trade market.
Add in the fact Garoppolo is a young, accurate and mobile passer who’d fit Jackson’s scheme nicely and the two teams’ recent trade history (they were trade partners on a deal that moved linebacker Jamie Collins earlier this year) and this is a rumor that seems entirely plausible on all accounts.
not sure what thread I first saw Garoppolo talk. but I came across this and thought to put it up in it's own thread for chat.
shoot if we could keep both our first round picks and still get Garoppolo. that would mean we would be able to get Garrett or Allen right out of the gate...
what do you guys think? I have not watch too much of his play so I don't really know.
I bet you're wondering the samething I did, why O' why didn't I take the...blue pill

You should praise them if they stay away from him.
He's gonna be a bum.

I'm not the best at those kinds of evaluations, but I would be okay w/us giving the first pick of the second round for him. I would even be okay w/giving a first round pick for him, provided we did some moving down and it wasn't a top 12 pick or thereabouts.
I like him better than any qb in this draft. I liked him in college. I thought he forced the ball into tight windows too often and he did play against weak competition, but the guy has very good skills. He also looked very good as the starter for NE this year.
He's young, he has good pedigree. He has shown that he can perform well against NFL competition [in a limited time period].
If we traded for him, we could draft Garrett at number one and upgrade our secondary while having a very good prospect at QB.
I'd be all for it. The problem is that it probably won't happen.
That is a generalization that simple is inaccurate.
There have been quarterbacks traded that performed very well. Drew Brees was actually released.
It is all about circumstances.
If you believe Garoppolo is not worth trading for that is one thing but to say if you trade for a quarterback you will always lose that is just not the case. The Vikings were happy about getting Bradford.
New England has a decision to make about Garoppolo. Trade him now. Let him walk next year as a free agent. Sign him to an extension. Or keep till next year and then franchise him. In the meantime Brady is under contract through 2019.
1st, let's get one thing out of the way... Lombardi is a turd.
Now that we've checked that box, I'm fine with going after JG. We don't have a QB, and we need one in the worst way. I'm hearing that there isn't a sure-fire guy to get at the position in the draft this year (why would there be, it's the year we have the #1 pick). I'm all for using our draft picks to get impact players on defense (since that's apparently the strength of this draft) as well as a couple others (flyer on a center, a stud RT definitely wouldn't hurt, flyer on a QB that's falling).
We took a low-risk try at having RG3 being our franchise QB. That looks like it's probably not going to work out. I see no reason to stop taking low-risk swings at guys that could potentially make it happen.
The key will be the price to get it done. We simply cannot hand out our high draft picks for a guy like this. If we were better off (talent-wise) regarding the rest of the roster, then buying big would might make more sense. As it is now, trading for Jimmy makes sense only if we can get a good deal on him (I wouldn't go any higher than a low 2nd, and even that would make me uneasy). We simply cannot sacrifice the continued building of the rest of the roster to take a chance on another Patriots backup
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
Not at all surprised by this. Pats cant afford to resign him most likely and they would like to get something for him while they can. Its gonna cost us a lot of money to sign him thanks to the Osweiller deal. If we can get him for a 2nd and maybe a couple later picks i would be in favor of it.

I'd start with offering them our 2nd second rounder and a conditional pick in the 2017 or 2018 draft based on Garoppolo's stats, up to a first rounder (protected in 2017), but no worse than a 5th rounder.
I like JG, thought he was a legitimate target in 2014. He looked good with NE, but the NE offense is a well oiled machine, so there is no guarantee that he will play as well with our offense. I agree our 2nd 2nd round pick would be a good offer.

I was thinking why not start off with a third this year and a third next year, just to kick off talks
This is what I'm thinking. Especially with how our deals with the Patriots usually go down. You cannot tell me that Jimmy G is anymore valuable than Jaime Collins Sr to either the Browns or the Pats.
I have to wonder who our competition would be for him, on the trade market.
Maybe Buffalo or the Jets. Jacksonville or Denver could look his way. Chicago or San Francisco might also be potential trade partners for the Pats.
All of these teams are in fairly dire straits. Would any of them give up a 1st for Garoppolo? I tend to think they would not.
I would really prefer to keep our top 3 picks. I would go with the Tenn 2nd rounder, and maybe a future 3rd. (as we have an extra 2nd next year already)
It'll be interesting.

I went looking ..... and Ryan Mallett, who was a Pat's backup, was traded to the Texans for a conditional 6th or 7th round pick.
Maybe a Pats' backup might have a lower value.
Garoppolo is only under contract for one more season. I don't know how that would factor in.
I have read articles saying "a 1st plus ..." I would not do that.

Last year, we ended up w/Corey Coleman w/our first round pick. I would go w/Jimmy G all day long over Coleman.
Exactly! Why do our fans (and obviously the FO too) value draft picks so much. It boggles my mind. They would rather have 11+ losses and have 12 picks in the draft than win games. I guess that the draft is the Browns superbowl really rings true. Too bad the Browns have not had a clue in the draft in almost 20 years.
Congratulations to our 2016 NBA Champion CLEVELAND CAVALIERS!!! Greatest comeback in sports history... Hail to the King!

He's not going to trade him within the division .. NO WAY ... well, unless he knows something negative no one else does .. *L* ... so that rules out Buff and the Jets ...
I highly doubt he trades him in conference to a team he could make immediate impact on .. if he does trade him in conference .. no way Denver .. there too good and only a QB away with that D ... that leaves us, jax, in the AFC ..... Houston falls in the same category as Denver ..
That leaves Frisco, Arizona, and the Bears in the NFC ...
If we could get Jimmy G. for our second round pick, I think that would be a sweet deal. That is when he went when he came out, and now he has three years as Brady's understudy under his belt. Myles Garrett and a safety in the first round. I would be happy!
Tom Brady is 40 next year. If Bill B doesn't think Jimmy G is worth keeping behind a 40 year old QB then I'm not sure that I want to risk more than a 3rd rounder for him.

I get why one might think that...but I believe they like Brissett (sp?) too and he's also young. JG is a 'valuable asset'. Who knows?
I can't tell how good or bad Jimmy G. is, but playing there and backing up Brady without being forced to take the field is about as good prep as a player with brains and tools can possibly get. Just as you can screw up a kid by throwing him to the wolves, a guy can benefit from being brought along properly. The Pats have invested a lot in this guy, and, aside from cheating, they do things right. I don't see how that is not a better option than the draft, at least for the 3-5 year window.
I have read articles saying "a 1st plus ..." I would not do that
Possibly JG and us swap the Eagles pick and the Pats 1st rounder. If that doesn't seem enough for us, maybe get another pick...possibly a 3rd next year.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Vers. Give me a little more as to why you like Garoppolo?
I'm not against it, but I'm really not interested in giving up a 1st round pick for him. Two starts isn't enough for me and that kind of investment. If we do in fact do it, I guess this is the best time with the 4 top picks we have.
This won't be taken well, but if I was Bellicheck this is what I would do if he really likes Garoppolo and this is all about money and Salary Cap.
Brady is going to be 40. He already looks like he has ice packs instead of knee pads on when he walks down the field. He's signed thru 2019? Garoppolo thru 2017.
If Bellicheck likes Garoppolo, he has a golden opportunity to make a seamless transition in 2018 by (Ready for this one?)
TRADE your 41 year old QB and sign your 26 year old who you've spent 4 years grooming to take over for the foreseeable future. Hell, you might get MORE for Brady in a trade.
Much like Manning to Luck, even though Garoppolo hasn't proven to be in Luck's territory yet.
I have read articles saying "a 1st plus ..." I would not do that

Saying that they get Eagles pick.. roughly pick # 10 and we get roughly pick # 30 plus Garapolo... and maybe a pick in the 3rd or 4th round in another year ( 2017 - 2018 ). That is something that sounds more than fair for both sides....
The Cleveland Browns - WE KNOW QUARTERBACKS ( Look at how many we've had ... )
NE would not go for that. Perhaps exchange the first round picks and also give them a 3rd rounder. They still might not go for that, but that seems more fair.
I don't think people understand what a good prospect Jimmy G was coming out of college. He is not a late round/UDFA type like Cassell and Hoyer. He was a legitimate 1st to 2nd rd guy.
Swap 1's and give them our 4th rd. this year and 3rd in 2018 ... If they say no look to Trowbiski or Watson ...
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
NE would not go for that. Perhaps exchange the first round picks and also give them a 3rd rounder. They still might not go for that, but that seems more fair.

I dunno how I feel about that. That New England pick is gonna be a really late 1st round pick..... The Eagles pick is potentially Top 10. There's a lot of guys who could be available in the Top 10.
There should be other QBs out there, and while JG looks the best, he doesn't have a big body of work. Isn't Glennon a FA? And I think Buffalo wants to get out of their deal with their QB.
JG played like two games this year and got hurt.........
Two top 10 picks, potentially Garrett and Jamal Adams/Dalvin Cook/Leonard Fournette (if RBs fall)/a number of other defensive players. I dunno if I want to give up that second 1st rounder
