The Cleveland Browns have signed DL Gabe Wright to the active roster from the club’s practice squad.

In addition, the team signed WR Mario Alford to the practice squad.

LB Scooby Wright III was signed by Arizona off the Browns’ practice squad.

Wright is 6-2, 284 pounds and officially in his second NFL season out of Auburn. Originally selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, he has appeared in 10 career games. Wright has appeared in three games with the Browns this season and spent eight weeks on the club’s practice squad. A native of Columbus, Ga., Wright graduated from Carver High School.

Alford is 5-8, 177 pounds and officially in his second NFL season out of West Virginia. Browns claim RB Darius Jackson off waivers from Cowboys

There are few upsides to being 0-13, but one of them is the top spot in the waiver order so that you can have first crack at adding any player dropped by another club.

The Browns took advantage of that spot on Wednesday. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team has claimed running back Darius Jackson a day after the Cowboys dropped him to make room for Darren McFadden’s return to the active roster.

Jackson was a sixth-round pick this year and never got into a regular season game for the Cowboys while playing behind Ezekiel Elliott, Alfred Morris and Lance Dunbar. His chances of seeing more action may be better with the Browns, but Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson’s presence may not make for a significant change in outlook outside of the spot in the standings.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports there were multiple other teams interested in Jackson with the 49ers, who have the second waiver spot, included in the group.

The guy ran under 4.4 and had a 41 inch Vertical. That's pretty impressive.

Not an instinctive runner, though. He hesitates too much at--or behind--the LOS.

Do you remember the gaping holes our O line gave him, only to run into the blocks?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

wow Scooby Wright is still in the NFL.
3 days after he was drafted he was already being touted as a steal and what a find.
he was overated in college
made alot tackles but as agile aa a cinder block
Alford is a true burner
a shorter version of Mike Wallace
I think in Cincy he had concentration issues
strictly a outside the hashmark WR.

Browns Claim RB Darius Jackson Off Waivers, Eagles, Giants & 49ers Also Tried To Claim Him

Adam Schefter reports that the Browns have claimed rookie RB Darius Jackson off of waivers from the Cowboys on Wednesday.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Eagles, Giants, 49ers and Browns all placed waiver claims for Jackson but Cleveland had the higher waiver priority.
The Cowboys waived Jackson to make room for RB Darren McFadden, who was activated from the non-football injury list on Tuesday.

It’s likely that Dallas was hoping for Jackson to clear waivers, so they could sign him to their practice squad. However, he’ll get a new opportunity in Cleveland.

Jackson, 23, was selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft by the Cowboys. He’s currently in the first year of his four-year, $2.44 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $540,000 and $630,000 over the next two years.

Jackson has yet to appear in an NFL game.

During his college career at Eastern Michigan, Jackson ran for 1,596 yards on 321 carries (5 YPC) to go along with 44 receptions for 375 yards receiving and 21 touchdowns.

Speed is like trying to teach a 22 year old how to catch a football. You can't. Either the player can catch, or has speed, or they can't/don't.

But of the two, speed is unteachable. You might be able to teach fast guys some form that helps save a tenth or two, but you can't make a slow guy fast. Either you can run, or you can't.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

You can teach them to be at the top possible end of their "CAPABILITIES"

I can teach a 4.9 guy to become 4.6...but I cannot get him to 4.3 unless he had that inside of him all along.

Arm Strength...definitely isn't God Given like speed. You can get it up there. To acceptable levels...well I take that back...it just like speed sorry for the reversal but that 4.6 speed is pretty good. The Arm Strength can be improved to an acceptable NFL Level up to a point.

The kid we had Shawn??? we let go this year...just even at his possible best wasn't good enough. Kessler definitely can upgrade it - He will never have a Favre type of talent to throw but a Joe Montana arm strength the possibility is there.

If arm strength can be improved, why don't all pitchers throw in the high 90s?

I think you can tinker w/a guy's mechanics to generate more throwing power, but if they are playing collegiately, they have already been exposed to "building up arm strength."

How a 'versatile' Darius Jackson could help the Browns

Posted Dec 15, 2016

Patrick MaksStaff WriterTwitter

Jackson was claimed off waivers from Dallas on Wednesday

The Browns claimed rookie running back Darius Jackson off waivers from Dallas on Wednesday. The following morning, Cleveland welcomed him with a winter storm that dropped all sorts of snow across parts of Northeast Ohio.

But the cold doesn’t seem to bother the former Eastern Michigan standout much.

“I’m used to this weather, coming back to a blizzard is fine,” Jackson said Thursday. “I was like, hey, I’ve been through it before for four years so I can roll with it.”

Jackson, a sixth-round draft pick who showed promise in the preseason with the Cowboys, joins a Browns team that’s still searching for its first win. He adds depth to a room that includes Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson Jr., and should find a role on special teams.

“I came here for a reason to help build the team,” he said. “We’re all in this together. We’re all going to try and get a win this season.”

In Dallas, Jackson was part of a playoff team that’ll challenge for a Super Bowl come January. But having sat behind the likes of rookie Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris, Jackson said he’s excited about the opportunities he might have in a new place.

“I’m very eager, sitting for 13 straight games,” he said. “I was a part of something special, but I was eager to get on the field. If i get that opportunity I’m going to be beyond excited.”

Jackson started to appear on NFL radars in his senior season at EMU, where he ran for 1,078 yards and 14 touchdowns on 208 carries. He also caught 21 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns and played special teams earlier in his career. At his Pro Day, he posted a handful of impressive numbers, including a 4.4-second 40-yard dash time.

Those dynamics and a versatile skill set is what also drew the attention of the Browns coaching staff.

“He can catch the ball, he can run with the ball and he has been a contributor on special teams,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “We are always trying to find young talent that can do more than one thing and that can add and play a different role on our team than just the traditional running back. He has that skill set.”

Darius Jackson said roughly a dozen teams — including Cleveland — put in claims to add him to their roster

“I didn’t really know how waivers worked, how it goes with the team with the (worst) record, however it goes,” he said. “I was just like let me know and I’ll be on a plane and be ready to go.”

Asked of that attention, Jackson said “it means a lot, it shows that a lot of teams are interested in me and believe in me. That’s all I need.”

Jackson’s now ready to return the favor if the Browns need him to suit up on what looks to be a snowy Sunday in Buffalo.

“If I had to do it, I’ll be ready to do it,” he said. “I’ll get the job done.”

Alford played two seasons with the Mountaineers, compiling 92 catches for 1,497 yards (16.3 yards/catch) and 13 touchdowns and also returning kickoffs, with 26 returns for a 28.6-yard average in 2014. He turned in some blistering 40 times of 4.32 and 4.27 seconds at his pro day.

looks like our new return guy is here..

I asked a question. You answered w/another question. LOL

They would do it because Haslam has proven to be cheap. He puts his money into marketing venues, not improving the team.

I don't think Haslam being cheap has anything to do with it.
This FO has a plan and the plan called for a gutting of the Team and build through the draft. Spending money in the first year of this plan does not make sense. However the more we draft and get the players we want, then the spending will come to help round out the roster.

The Browns' obsession with the bottom 10 on their roster is hilarious. Yo Sashi, check out the top 10 on your roster. It's a freaking JOKE, and two of them (Pryor, Collins) are probably outta here after this season.

Come on man, they are constantly massaging the last few spots on the active roster, along with the Practice Squad, as if they - and only they - are the ones who see something in these guys that are other teams' dregs. It reminds me of the threads around here about UDFA's after the draft is over.

To be fair, the HB had 12 teams try to claim him off of waivers..

This time of year, only thing you can do is tinker with the bottom guys, and re-sign players. And the players we want to re-sign (Pryor/Collins) aren't going to be doing that until after the season is over.
