Bloody Christmas weekend: More than 40 shot, 11 killed in Chicago

Christmas weekend was grim in Chicago even by this year's wretched standards for gun violence: Police say at least 41 people were shot, 11 fatally, between Friday evening and Sunday night, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The victims include James Gill, 18, and Roy Gill, 21, who were killed when somebody came out of an alley and opened fire on a front porch during a family party, the Chicago Tribune reports. Five others were wounded in that shooting alone, two of them critically.

Hours earlier, a man around 40 was pronounced dead in a South Side hospital after having been shot multiple times near the Apostolic Labor of Love church, where a pool of blood could be seen on the front step.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Jose Estrada tells the New York Times that the number of homicides in the city so far this year is 745, up from 476 at this time last year, and marking the first time since 1997 that there have been more than 700.

He says the total number of shooting victims so far this year is 4,252, up 47% from 2,884 at this time in 2015. Most victims are men under 30.

The number of murders in Chicago this year is on course to top that of Los Angeles and New York City combined.

I'd love to read reasonably possible theories as to why this is happening.

For instance, maybe it's signalling a trend in American society.

Maybe 40 years of graphic gun violence on TV is making it easier to point a loaded gun at someone and pull the trigger.

Cuz, you'z bad.

That maybe combined with fewer young adults getting proper weapons training (as in the armed services).

Just a quick brain storm.

But of course, why Chicago?

I stated a very simple comment. There was already a recent thread about gun violence in Chicago. Where the hell did the rest of your craphole comments come from?

Horrible gang problem due to 1) economic conditions, Only sociopaths choose lives of crime over stable employment. 2) The juvenile court system is not rehabilitating the children it receives, but are essentially recruiting grounds for gangs. Kids are thrown into overcrowded jails where they believe and are told that only fellow inmates/gang members care about them.

I'll try to find some articles about this later, but I'm on my phone.

Research the following:
-Institutional Racism
-The Poor People's Campaign
-Watts Riots
-White Flight
-The Prison Industrial Complex
-Subpar Inner-City Education
-Lack of meaningful poverty reform
-Watch The Wire

These should educate you. Talk to Lurker and anyone willing to discuss this you haven't burned bridges with.

Look at my cousin. (by marriage) (in west Philadelphia born and raised) Oh, she had some similar experiences in high school as swish did in jr. high.


Look at the kids in my own school district that are living in bad conditions, no money.

How about this: Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. How's that working out in those neighborhoods?

It will take a true culture change for any improvements to be seen. You figure out how to change that, you'll be a national hero.

Oh I don't think gun laws will change a thing. There's so many guns on the streets people can buy them anywhere. Only law abiding citizens will buy a gun that can be traced.

So we agree that being tough on crime isn't a real solution to inner city crime? I was just being sarcastic that simply saying, "I'll be tough on crime" is an election phrase that really won't change anything.

And before you go off about that, it works the same for both parties. They shoot out a lot of hot air that really doesn't mean anything to get elected.
