I'm ready for another music thread. Are you? I like these threads because they seem to be more joyful and objective [even though they are very subjective ..lol] than most threads. Certainly, there is less animosity. I need some happy time. Hope y'all will oblige me.

Us music guys and gals like music for different reasons. Some like the instrumental aspect. Others are all about the beat. Some like to dance to the music. Some prefer deep and meaningful lyrics. Others are about the arrangement. Etc, etc...Some of us like all of it...LOL I want this thread to only be about the lyrics, though. Hope that is cool. What songs have the best lyrics in your opinion?

As a poet and sometimes writer, I really respect the people who can write great lyrics. I love those who can write poetic and meaningful lyrics. It's truly an art.

Here is the format I would like to see.......post the lyrics first so we can examine them. Then, if you wish, post an example of an artist performing that particular song. Cool?

Oh, one more thing...........if you want to add an interpretation of the lyrics, that would be so freaking cool. You don't have to, but I absolutely love that kind of thing.

I actually came up w/the idea for this thread while answering Pastor in the bowl games thread. So, w/out further ado, here is my first entry:

Quote:

Both Sides, Now

by Joni Mitchell

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I think this song is about a person who had certain thoughts as a child and as she matured, realized that those those thoughts were just whimsical fantasies.

And here is the cool part, even though she understands that her childhood thoughts were mere fantasies, she has come to the realization that she still doesn't have a clear grasp on reality, which is the bitter pill that many intellectual adults have to contend with.

Here is a recording of Joni performing the song:

I'd love to partake in this thread, but I can't. Too many songs..........and I lean towards contemporary country (Kenny, Darius, etc), or gospel quartet (Kingsmen Quartet circa early 80's to early 90's, or Acapella).

One that always makes me smile and gives me hope.

Ripple... by the Grateful Dead

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You, who choose to lead, must follow
But if you fall you fall alone.
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

You don't have to go into as much detail as I did. Just list some great lyrics you like. There are really no rules. It's just love of music/song writing.

I was just trying to make it a really cool thread. However, I would never want to discourage any input. Post away, arch.

Excellent addition. Robert Hunter's song is pretty mysterious. I have seen interpretations that the song was influenced by the far east, especially the Haiku chorus. Others have said it has biblical references.

I was never really a Dead Head and am not educated enough in the Dead to interpret it, but I am going to look at it and see if I can figure it out.

Hunter/Garcia and Barlow/Weir wrote so many amazing lyrics over the years. Their music may not be for everyone but their poetry transcends.
As to not spam with Dead lyrics, but to provide others another chance to be exposed to what they did, this will be my last.

Wharf Rat

"Wharf Rat"

Old man down, way down down, down by the docks of the city.
Blind and dirty, asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee.
I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine.
More than my wine - more than my maker, though he's no friend of mine.

Everyone said, I'd come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them.
Half of my life, I spent doin' time for some other [censored]'s crime,
The other half found me stumbling 'round drunk on Burgundy wine.

But I'll get back on my feet again someday,
The good Lord willin', if He says I may.
I know that the life i'm livin's no good,
I'll get a new start, live the life I should.
I'll get up and fly away, I'll get up and fly away, fly away.

Pearly's been true, true to me, true to my dyin' day he said,
I said to him, I said to him, "I'm sure she's been."
I said to him, "I'm sure she's been tru to you."

Got up and wandered, wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around.
I've got a girl, named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me.
I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me.

Eve, I think that Alanis is one of the great songwriters of her generation and possibly ever. I loved her anger. I loved how she rebelled against stereotypes and generalizations. However, I think she had several other songs that were much better in regards to lyrics and actually...........better overall.

But whatever, I absolutely love Alanis Morisette. Great writer. Very innovative. Not afraid to step out of the norm. And she pretty much said............"blank you all........I'm out!"

arch, I know we don't get along............but, don't worry about getting dumped on. It's not allowed on this thread. LOL

Post what moves you. It's just our opinions, man.

Come on, I NEED some good conversation. Music is so freaking cool. Many of us hold our musical preferences so dearly. We get mad if someone disses our music. We pound our chests about why our music is so special. We gyrate, we groove, we stomp, we beat, we sing when no one is around because why??????????? Music moves us, man.

No hostilities on this thread. No harsh evaluations. Just pure expression. That damn Joni Mitchell got me pumped. She was such a pure person. Let it flow, arch.

She is a good one. I am sure she had better songs. I just always liked that one when I was young and feeling angsty about men. It was a great outlet.

Speaking of Alanis, here is one I really like:

Quote:
"Uninvited"

Like anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd need shepherd
But you you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before
But this is not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight

I don't think you unworthy
I need a moment to deliberate

I think this song is about an illicit love interest. Whether it is from an older male while she was younger; another woman who desires her; or a man that is deemed undesirable by societies standards, I don't know..........but, something along those lines.

Here is the recording. Please note the tone of music behind her and how it builds throughout the piece. Also, note how the piece starts. The first note. It's foreboding. It precludes doom, perhaps disaster, but at the very least, sadness in the end result. The rest of the remaining musical arrangement is biting, harsh, and cold. It assists in painting a picture that the relationship will never work, even if it is worthy. Disaster is the message here.

Oh yes! I love that one also! Good pick. I remember being angsty to that song lol

Another angry song I liked in my younger years was Metallica - Sad But True

Changing gears a bit. I want to talk about Roger Waters. He is from Pink Floyd. And while I was disappointed in some of what I heard about the bickering and in-fighting the group had, it is undeniable that Floyd is perhaps the best band of all time and Waters is one of the world's greatest song writers.

Waters wrote many great songs, such as Time, Hey You, and Comfortably Numb, but I am going to choose this one:

Quote:
"Us And Them"

Us and them
And after all we're only ordinary men

Me and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do

"Forward!" he cried
From the rear
And the front rank died
And the General sat
As the lines on the map
Moved from side to side

Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who?

Up and down
And in the end it's only round and round and round

"Haven't you heard
It's a battle of words?"
The poster bearer cried.
"Listen, son,"
Said the man with the gun,
"There's room for you inside."

"Well, I mean, they're gonna kill ya, so like, if you give 'em a quick sh...short, sharp shock, they don't do it again.
Dig it? I mean he got off light, 'cause I could've given 'I'm a thrashin' but I only hit him once.
It's only the difference between right and wrong innit? I mean good manners don't cost nothing, do they? Eh?"

Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about

With, without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?

Get out of the way,
It's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price
Of tea and a slice
The old man died

Obviously, this song is about war. However, I think it goes beyond that. I think that it's about the differences that exist between human beings. Please consider the board. Liberals vs Conservatives. Dems vs Republicans. Blacks vs whites. Pro FO vs those who doubt the FO. Pro religious vs those who don't believe. It's truly a society of Us and Them.

Here is the recording:

Not sure if this song rises to the level of greatness, but it speaks to me.

Skillet

Monster
The secret side of me, I never let you see
I keep it caged but I can't control it
So stay away from me, the beast is ugly
I feel the rage and I just can't hold it

It's scratching on the walls, in the closet, in the halls
It comes awake and I can't control it
Hiding under the bed, in my body, in my head
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

My secret side I keep hid under lock and key
I keep it caged but I can't control it
'Cause if I let him out he'll tear me up, break me down
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

It's hiding in the dark, it's teeth are razor sharp
There's no escape for me, it wants my soul, it wants my heart
No one can hear me scream, maybe it's just a dream
Maybe it's inside of me, stop this monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I've gotta lose control, here's something radical
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

Foo Fighters

The Pretender
Lyrics
Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark
And so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones go marching in, again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever ready
Are you ready?
I'm finished making sense
Done pleading ignorance
That whole defense

Spinning infinity, boy
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

In time our soul untold
I'm just another soul for sale, oh well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
We're temporary, temporary
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left, I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
(You know they all pretend)
You're the pretender
(Who dares)
What if I say I will never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
(You know they all pretend)
You're the pretender
(Who dares)
What if I say I will never surrender?

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Can't go too far wrong with Becker and Fagen's "Babylon Sisters" or Dylan's "Buckets of Rain", but lately I've been enjoying some Jesse Merchant (JBM). The following is a passage from his song "Going Back Home":

"And every time that I think that you find that I see
The distance I keep makes a poor judging fool out of me
Just like coming around to a part of your town that you've been
But everything's changed from the lights to the houses to tree
But the smell is the same, and it makes me remember your dreams

Oh, my love
Gather your feet and start walking to the sun
My love
Kill off your demons before your heart turns into one."

When we were waiting the long months to bring home our son from Guatemala, I heard this song and really identified with the lyrics.

From American Tale, "Somewhere Out There"

Somewhere out there,
Beneath the pale moonlight,
Someone's thinking of me,
And loving me tonight.

Somewhere out there,
Someone's saying a prayer,
That we'll find one another,
In that big somewhere out there.

And even though I know how very far apart we are,
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star,
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky!

Somewhere out there,
If love can see us through,
Then we'll be together,
Somewhere out there,
Out where dreams
Come true...

NAT KING COLE LYRICS

"When Sunny Gets Blue"

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall, pitter-patter, pitter-patter
Love is gone, what can matter
No sweet lover man comes to call

When Sunny gets blue, she breaths a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swaying
Like some violin is playing strange and haunting melodies

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

But memories will fade and pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry new love, hurry here, to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

Hurry new love, hurry here, to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

Dire Straits - "Romeo And Juliet"

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, "You and me babe — how 'bout it?"

Juliet says, "Hey it's Romeo. You nearly gimme a heart attack"
He's underneath the window; she's singing, "Hey, la, my boyfriend's back.
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that.
Anyway what you gonna do about it?"

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet, then you exploded in my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah.
Now you just say, "Oh Romeo, yeah. You know, I used to have a scene with him."

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die."
There's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'll do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie, I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die."
There's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

And a lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Find a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
And says something like, "You and me babe — how 'bout it?"

"You and me babe — how about it?"

Dude, I could give so many examples I didn't even know where to start.
But I gotta start somewhere.

maybe my favourite band, period, is the 70/80s Canadian power trio Triumph. I think these lyrics speak for themselves, but I like how they start with a sense of despair then go in a positive-thinking direction by the end.

TIME GOES BY
Can't you feel the thunder, rollin' in a young man's heart
Can't you see the frustration it's tearin' him apart
He's got a hunger for power, he wants to have it all
Sometimes he feels like he's bangin' his head up against the wall
Out in the real world living a lie
Can't seem to make the change, but he can't say why
As Time Goes By
Nobody really knows what to say, tomorrow is another day
That seems a million miles away, so far away

Time Goes By, bridges burn and big wheels turn and
Time can fly, will it ever bring you back again?
You know that I can't live without your love
Time Goes By, you know I'll never make it alone

Can't you see the fire burnin' in a young girl's eyes
Does she think that she moves ahead if she cuts me down to size
Everybody's got two cents to try to buy some time
But they don't even know their own hearts
What can they know of mine?
Call out for reasons echoes the cry
She waits, anticipates; no reply as Time Goes By
Oh baby I don't know what to say
Tomorrow is another day
You seem a million miles away, so far away

We all bear witness as history unfolds
Let's hope tomorrow can deliver on the promise that she holds
Don't look back in anger, don't look ahead in fear
You just keep takin' her as she comes until she comes in clear
The love you send out returns to you in time
The wheel gets turned around by those who try
For all their lives

Romeo & Juliet slays me. Takes me back to a certain point in time, and a certain girl I'll never forget (I'm happily married now, but you know how it is.....)

I've always like a lot of Crosby, Still, Nash and Young, probably because their lyrics were very politically charged and gave us "liberal/progressives" a voice in the mainstream. Granted, the Kent State Massacre happened a year before I was born.

I chose a Neil Young tune "Old Man'

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

My wife's contribution:

"Oceans" by Pearl Jam

Hold on to the thread
The currents will shift, glide me towards
You know something's left
And we're all allowed to dream of the next
Oh, oh the next, time we touch
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

You don't have to stray tho oceans away

Waves roll in my thoughts, hold on tight the ring
The sea will rise, please stand by the shore
Oh, oh, oh, I will be, I will be there once more
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Sorry I'm blowing up this thread, but this the last one for now.

This song holds some deep sentimental value to me because I heard a few days after one of my life-long friends lost his battle with ALS. The song says basically everything I don't have the eloquence to put forth into thought.

Marc Broussard "Man Ain't Supposed to Cry"

They say a man ain't supposed to cry.
But I can't seem to stop these tears.
It's too hard living life without a friend.
To help me smile.
If my tears could bring you back to me.
I'd gladly cry a thousand years.
Thinking 'bout the feel I get to see your face.
And say, old friend.
I'm happy to see you again.

These walls are not the same.
Sunny you have gone and changed.
You've changed it all.
I'm so tired of the pain.
I was never good at explaining,
Can't carry it all.
I don't know why.
But I know I miss you.

That's why they say a man ain't supposed to cry.
But I can't seem to stop these tears.
It's too hard living life without a friend.
To help me smile.
If my tears could bring you back to me.
I'd gladly cry a thousand years.
Thinking 'bout the feel I get to see your face.
And say, old friend.
I'm happy to see you again.

The decisions we all make.
So written on the page.
It's written on your face.
You can try to turn that corner.
But when you're so deep in the water.
Tryna see the break.
What can you take?
Who's gonna save me?

That's why they say a man ain't supposed to cry.
But I can't seem to stop these tears.
It's too hard living life without a friend.
To help me smile.
If my tears could bring you back to me.
I'd gladly cry a thousand years.
Thinking 'bout the feel I get to see your face.
And say, old friend.
I'm happy to see you again, oh.

It won't be long, no, now, now.
When I get to see your face, oh.
No, no, that a man, no.
No, no, that a man, no.
I just wish I had my friend, now.
Oh, oh, oh.

Weird Al

One More Minute

(It's so inspiring)

[constant "doo wop"s in the background throughout the song]

Aahh

Well I heard that you're leavin' (leavin')
Gonna leave me far behind (so far behind)
'Cause you found a brand new lover
You decided that I'm not your kind (aahh..)

So I pulled (I pulled) your name out (name out) of my Rolodex (oohh..)
And I tore all your pictures in two
And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go
Just because it reminds me of you (dippity dippity doo)

That's right (that's right) you ain't gonna see me cryin'
I'm glad (I'm glad) that you found somebody new
'Cause I'd rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass
Than spend one more minute with you

I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps

Oh, so honey, let me help you with that suitcase
You ain't (you ain't) gonna break my heart in two
'Cause I'd rather get a hundred thousand paper cuts on my face
Than spend one more minute with you

I'd rather rip out my intestines with a fork
Than watch you going out with other men
I'd rather slam my fingers in a door (yah)
Again and again and again and again and again

Oh, can't you see what I'm tryin' to say, Darlin...

I'd rather have my blood sucked out by leeches (leeches)
Shove an icepick under a toenail or two
I'd rather clean all the bathroom in Grand Central Station with my tongue
Than spend one more minute with you

Yes, I'd rather jump naked on a huge pile of thumbtacks
Or stick my nostrils together with crazy glue
I'd rather dive into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades
Than spend one more minute with you

I'd rather rip my heart out of my ribcage with my bare hands
and then throw it on the floor and stomp on it 'till I die
Than spend one more minute with you

That's why I said she's scary live....she's all about raw emotion.

Nice. That is one of all-time favorite songs. And yeah, CSN&Y were freaking awesome. Here is a tie to the original post in this thread. Joni Mitchell wrote this song for CSN&Y to sing at Woodstock.

Quote:
Woodstock

Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, Tell me, where are you going
This he told me

Said, I'm going down to Yasgur's Farm
Gonna join in a rock and roll band
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free

We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

Well, then can I roam beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel myself a cog in somethin' turning
And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning

We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we…

I think this song is about the movement of that generation. They believed in peace, self-expression, and changing the world for the good. It very well could be an anthem for the hippie movement.

I believe you're right about that song.
They had such idealism back then. Jim Morrison (speaking of great lyricists) once said the flower power movement will look very romantic to future generations - and time proved him right.

The Doors (21st Century Fox )

Well, she's fashionably lean
And she's fashionably late
She'll never rank a scene
She'll never break a date
But she's no drag
Just watch the way she walks

She's a twentieth century fox
She's a twentieth century fox
No tears, no fears
No ruined years, no clocks
She's a twentieth century fox, oh yeah

She's the queen of cool
And she's the lady who waits
Since her mind left school
It never hesitates
She won't waste time
On elementary talk

'Cause she's a twentieth century fox
She's a twentieth century fox
Got the world locked up
Inside a plastic box
She's a twentieth century fox, oh yeah
Twentieth century fox, oh yeah
Twentieth century fox
She's a twentieth century fox

EO brought this one up and I can tell you exactly who Van wrote this for,
My granddaughter

Once in a blue moon
Something good comes along
Once in a blue moon
Everything's not going wrong
When you get weary
Beating on the same old gong
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along
Once every once in a while
Something comes along that feels just right
Once every once in a while
Just like switching on an electric light
And sometimes you try till you're blue in the face
But when you get that feeling
Nothing's going to take its place
Once in a blue moon
There's a thing called happiness
It happens when you're in
A state of natural grace
When the wind is blowing
All around the fence
I get that happy feeling
Things start making sense
All just feels so lucky
That you just can't go wrong
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along
Once in a blue moon
There's a thing called happiness
It happens when you're in
A state of natural grace
When the grass is growing
All around the fence
And you get that happy feeling
Everything starts making sense
And you get so lucky
That you can't go wrong
Once in a blue moon
Something comes along
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along
Once in a blue moon
Something good comes along
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along
