If this is true, I kinda feel bad for Horton. I was a little worried when he came back on board because he really hasn't had any real success since Arizona, but this guy was considered a HC 5-6 years ago. Now.....not where close.

Getting Wade Phillips as D-coordinator would be huge. Not sure it really has much of a chance at happening, though.

Weird how it was worded....job offered to Williams. But Wade was contacted. Seems like two completely defensive schemes.

how did they offer the job to Gregg Williams if they haven't interviewed for the position yet. Doesn't that violate the Rooney rule?

Browns To Fire DC Ray Horton January 6th, 2017 at 3:41pm CST by Zach Links Ray Horton is out as defensive coordinator in Cleveland, according to Alex Marvez of The Sporting News (on Twitter). Already, the search is on for his replacement. Gregg Williams has been offered the job and Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been contacted about the vacancy. The Browns were a dumpster fire on both sides of the ball this year, but head coach Hue Jackson apparently feels that the team will need a philosophical change on defense. This year, the Browns finished next-to-last in defensive DVOA and they would have been dead last if it weren’t for the Lions’ awful ratings. Williams is currently in the midst of his second stint as the Rams’ defensive coordinator. After coach Jeff Fisher was canned, the Rams informed all assistants that they were free to seek other jobs. Williams, naturally, isn’t just waiting around to see if the next head coach in L.A. wants to keep him on board. However, the Cleveland job might not be the gig he has his eye on. There are better situations out there from a personnel standpoint, including the Redskins gig. Phillips has enjoyed great success in Denver, but he is on an expiring contract and unlikely to return. Phillips would be a splashy hire for a Browns team desperately seeking advancement in 2017. http://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/01/browns-fire-defensive-coordinator-ray-horton

Greg Williams would mean we are back to the 4-3. The Browns might actually get a pass rush with a line of Garrett/Shelton/Bryant/Ogbah.

#Browns have not have fired Ray Horton yet. It's been discussed for a few days. Could happen soon. https://twitter.com/MaryKayCabot/status/817493542591492098When there's smoke.....

Greg Williams or wade phillips?
Looking at our roster, swapping to a 4-3 could have our defense jump up a bunch of levels.

Not a fan of Horton's work so I'm good with this move. I actually felt it was necessary by mid season.

Other changes are forthcoming on the #Browns staff, sources say. Hue Jackson hinted at changes in wrap-up presser. https://twitter.com/MaryKayCabot/status/817493930799431680

We were 32nd in scoring defense and 31st in total defense ... yes I see why we made this move !!!

Offer Wade Phillips outrageous money and draft Myles Garrett. I hope they don't get rid of the cockroach. I would like to see and OC be brought in. But please God do not get Greg Williams. At that point get Rob Ryan back in here. At least Rob Ryan won't make the players dirty.

Real quick guys.
Remember, the Rooney rule does NOT apply to coordinator positions. It's encouraged, but not required.

Tony Grossi says.... Grossi: Wade Phillips (3-4) and Gregg Williams (4-3) are very different on their defensive philosophies. Which do the #Browns want? https://twitter.com/ESPNCleveland/status/817492776795389953Benjamin Allbright (who called out LaConfora and his poor journalism ethics) replies: Wade runs a 1-gap 4-3 under with the DE standing up... has this person never watched his defenses? https://twitter.com/AllbrightNFL/status/817496643952136192Admittedly, I thought they were different schemes but I'm good with being wrong...I just love twitter battles.

We were 32nd in scoring defense and 31st in total defense ... yes I see why we made this move !!! While this is true, cutting bad vet talents and filling the team with youth is part of the reason why the rankings were so bad. The rankings aren't what concerned me.

Front office kicks many of the veteran defensive players to the curb to make room for the rookies who end up playing and that is Horton's fault?

Exactly what was Horton supposed to do with the talent he was given?? Your not making chicken salad out of Chicken crap!!! This is shameful to fire a guy when you gave him jack crap to work with.....frigging Browns will never get this right good grief. If he was the guy you wanted last year when you KNEW this was going to be a rebuilding year why isn't he now when the results are what you KNEW ( or should have known) were coming.
This reeks of Haslem demanding something for the whiners of the world......moron.

The Harvard Boys supply the talent..it's then up to the coaching staff to try to make something out of that talent.
I guess, analytically speaking, Horton should have done a better job.

smh LP Easy big guy. Exactly WHY would you want Horton here? He's sucked EVERYWHERE he's been. I had hope too. No amount of talent will make this dude a good DC. He's all TALK. Give me Wade Phillips. Best in the NFL.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton could be fired soon, and Rams' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been discussed as his possible replacement, league sources told cleveland.com. Alex Marvez of Sporting News first reported that Horton was his way out and that Williams has already been offered the job. He also reported that Wade Phillips has been contacted. Sources told cleveland.com that Jackson has been talking about replacing Horton for the past few days, but that it hinged on several things, including finding the right replacement. Sources also told cleveland.com that other Browns assistants will be on their way out. Running game coordinator Kirby Wilson is safe, but others are on the hot seat. More to come soon. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/inde...ld_be_fir.html
