Agreed.

So, what's the point of self driving cars/trucks if you need a human sitting there in the driver's seat to take over when the computer screws up?

Technology improves throughout time, man.

You're being sort of ridiculous right now.

I don't think Arch denies what's coming, I think he's genuinely concerned and afraid of how far it will go and I don't blame him.

I'm sure the People said the same things with cars.

Whats the point of cars when we have horse and buggies!!!

It should go as far as possible. That's the point of pushing forward and getting better.

Still going to be decades before this is mainstream.

It's a transition phase while they work the bugs out.. it's coming and there isn't much anybody can do about it.

A number of good concerns have been raised and they will have to be worked out..

The roadwork/ lane closure / exit closure one is a good one because roadway construction zones can change almost daily with where lanes begin and end and lane shifts, etc. The only way to deal with this is going to have to be real time updates, not from other drivers as happens with the Waze app which was referenced earlier but by the state, the construction company, etc that can give actual EXACT conditions, times of changes, etc. This will create technology jobs within every roadway construction company and within the DOT.

One of my questions is, who is insured? If a self-driving truck has an accident, who pays? Is it the company that owns the truck or is it the tech/GPS outfit that was providing the navigation service? I could see some nasty law suits flying if those things aren't ironed out prior to putting these things on the road with normal citizens.

I met a guy once who was a "human factors engineer".. he was working on self-driving cars and his job was to figure out how that person sitting behind the wheel could panic and screw it up by falling asleep (which would happen easier if you were in the car but not responsible for driving), or if you panic and jam on the brakes or grab the steering wheel because you don't trust the navigation or because you decided you really needed to pull over to pee. And get this, he was doing this job 23 years ago. People think this is some new thing, they had crude self-driving cars going around a track and within a limited radius of the facility over 20 years ago.. so my guess is that any issue we can come with as a potential problem, they have already thought about it and have been working on how to fix it.

DC, that's the part people keep overlooking. There are very smart people who have spent YEARS experimenting and fixing the problems we have talked about,

Is that why people spend ten min texting each other back and forth when they could have just called talked and been done with it in 1 min?

That has nothing to do with technology improving and everything to do with people not knowing how to use the technology they have.

If anybody has the time and wants to see some of the stuff that is in development, actually very far in development and some of the things that you might see rolling out in just the next couple of years... watch this.

I will admit, it's long (it's over 40 minutes long)... but it's well worth the time. Swish, I thought of you when I watched it because they don't only talk about the technology, they talk about how it will affect the economy, the global way people do business, etc... Anybody from their teens up into their 30s who is trying to figure out where to go with their life, this is what other people your age are doing.. really, really fascinating, not to mention quite scary.. because I don't think we have the self-control or the systems of checks and balances in place to control what we are creating...

Agreed.

I come across it every day. The text crap.

Call me, or I'll call you, and in 1 minute or less we can get the details of whatever it is we're talking about.

Text? Takes a long time, relatively speaking.

I get it, the whole "when will you be home" "in an hour" thing is neat and convenient.

But real life is "when will you be home?" In an hour. "Can you pick up sour cream at the store on your way home?" Yeah, what kind?

Doesn't matter. Just not this brand, or that brand."

So, technology is supposed to save us time, and money. Right?

How does that fit in with self driving vehicles?

We still need drivers sitting in the drivers seat.

We have to pay for the technology to have a self driving vehicle that we still need to be able to be in control of. How much does that add to the cost of a vehicle? $2000? $8000? Who knows.

And, we would need to hire people on road construction to give constant updates to the satellite/gps in order for the self driving vehicles, with a driver in the driver's seat, to know what the hell is going on.

What's that add to construction costs? Millions?

And then the hack.

Where is it saving money?

There is a time and a place for each. Like if I'm at work, my wife will usually text me unless it is something extremely urgent, that way I can call her back when it's convenient for me.

As for your example, I've started text conversations like that but you are right, once you get about 3 or 4 texts into it, then it's time to just pick up the phone and get the information you need. Which in your example would end with me saying, just text me a picture of the sour cream we have and I'll buy the same one. rofl

DC says:One of my questions is, who is insured? If a self-driving truck has an accident, who pays?

My answer would be the Insurance co. You get Insurance for the Truck or Car no matter what and these Co's are in business for just that. It's about the Car more so than the Person.

Well The tech does make the trucks safer in many ways. They take a lot of driver error out of the equation. Volvo tends to be the trucks with the highest amount of tech in them and even our Made in America models have auto braking and cruise control that adjusts to traffic speed. They do a lot to eliminate things that happen because of driver fatigue.

Self driving trucks are not going to not have drivers in them, they will just be safer for those drivers and those around them.

You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
