This is a mistake. I think LA could eventually support two teams, but not this quickly after having no teams.
Selfishly I like this because the Browns are playing at the Chargers in 2017 (which is now LA) and I won't have to drive to San Diego to see them lose.
The rumor is that they will be playing at the StubHub center until the new stadium is done. It will be a nice experiment because the StubHub Center only holds 27,000 people.
Edit: I would also like to add that it is ridiculous that Dean Spanos needed/wanted public money to build a new stadium when he was getting a ton of money from the league and the Rams to build a stadium in San Diego. This is a total cash grab by him.
It saddens me though, in my early teens the Chargers were my team, back in the Dan Fouts days. I've been hoping they'd stay. Great uniforms, and a cool sounding name: San Diego Chargers.
I despise owners that move teams. Especially when they're offered so many 'incentives' to stay. I think the fan base investment in the team should be given much more weight when considering something like this.

Sometimes I can understand it (the Raiders stadium situation comes to mind). This one is hard to take, especially because there is already a team in the market he is moving the team to.
The NFL .... land of the super greedy, and lack of any loyalty to anyone or anything except the great American dollar ..... (and working now on foreign currency as well)
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

That's how capitalism works.
This team will flop and end up moving back to San Diego.
Not happy with this news. IMO it's a mistake to have two teams in the LA market
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
LA can't even support the Rams. I posted an article that addressed their poor attendance last night, but it must have gotten moved out of this forum. Wonder if this one will, as well?
Regardless, it was the Rams' first season back in LA and they had poor attendance starting around the 5th game. That is pathetic. The Rams also had poor attendance when they were last in LA.
I think it is wrong for the Chargers to move to LA.

LA has shown over and over again that it cannot support 1 NFL team let alone 2. Not sure why because LA is a great basketball town and Baseball city. Not sure why NFL teams flounder there.

I loved those Dan Fouts teams as well Can't say my team because they were always 2nd to the Browns
Their uniforms in the Air Coryell days were awesome. I liked them much better thanthe current uniforms
Anyone find it odd the the Rams and Chargers uniforms are the same colors?
It's a damn shame for the Chargers fans in SD. Cleveland fans really understand what die hard SD fans are feeling.
What really bums me out is that in the past, LA had two teams and they couldn't or wouldn't support them. They've had one team and couldn't/wouldn't support them.
Now they have two teams again while San Diego and St. Louis, who've supported their teams pretty well, got hammered by the NFL and greedy owners.
It's the way of the world I guess

Maybe to some extent. But if the Browns had moved to Toledo, Akron/Canton or the Columbus areas, they would have keep a lot of their fan base, and probably wouldn't have had to changed their name to the Ravens. It's a lot different then what happened to us IMO.

Being here in San Diego, I can understand the plight of Dean Spanos slightly. The Chargers stadium is an absolute dump. He's tried for years to get something passed where he could get a new stadium built and it is always shot down by tax-payers and the local city government. They tried this last ballot to get something passed. They needed 66% of the vote, and they barely got 40%. He probably felt he had no choice, unless he preferred to play in a dump year after year.
That said, I don't get moving to LA. LA has been a Raiders town since the 80's. The Chargers are the "rivals". It's like Cincinnati moving to Cleveland and expecting to get a huge fan base. With the Raiders moving to Las Vegas, they'll probably pull a ton of the fan base over with them, since it's only a 4 hour drive over there. The Rams will likely get most of the rest of "LA fans", and I don't see what's left for the Chargers. LA is already a huge fair-weather fan area and it will essentially be supporting three teams now.
I don't get San Diego not building a stadium either. They should combine a new stadium with a new convention center and they would be the Mecca of all tourist conventions in the country. They'd probably also get the Super Bowl every couple of years. But the city leaders keep wanting to throw the stadium out in Mission Valley and kick the can on a new convention center. It's like they are blind as to what happened when they finally bit the bullet and built a new baseball stadium downtown. The place went from homeless depot to thriving business hotspot over-night.
I'm wondering if Dean Spanos is doing this as a temporary thing though. Just something to jolt the city into action? (no pun intended). He's not moving that far away, and he's basically the second-tenant to the Rams new stadium and third favorite in a city that likes the Radiers. He's not far enough away to completely alienate the Chargers fans though, so maybe he's hoping to keep that "bridge" up long enough for something to change in San Diego so he can move back down when a stadium is actually built?

I can't remember the all the details of the Cleveland move, but from what I remember, it seemed like they were well on their way to getting a stadium deal done. Then Art just said, forget it, and moved anyway. Dean has been trying to get something done for years, and they just seem like they are miles from getting anything built. It doesn't feel like the same situation.
Why should the city foot the bill for a stadium that you make money on? It's not like he's taking money out of his personal account to pay his team. That comes from ticket sales. Then there's the tv money that they all get to share.
Not to mention all the other profits from whatever else. Not like these guys are broke at the end of a season.

The Rams and Raiders had major support in their heyday of playing in LA.
That last ballot initiative had a snowman's chance in hell of passing. You could vote on everyone getting a free in n out burger with no financial impact and people would still vote it down. Also, that last ballot was limited to voters right around the downtown area. I live in Carlsbad, which is about 45 minutes away, and it wasn't on my ballot, iirc.
IMO, it's a chicken or the egg argument. San Diego fans aren't so different from LA fans as they'd like you to believe. They haven't really done a great job of supporting their team. Even back a little bit, when they were fielding pretty good teams, attendance would be an issue. They were similar to Cincy with the blackouts. There are a lot of bandwagon fans in SD. Many do the whole "Pittsburgh is my second team" thing that I can't stand. When I say this, they usually respond with one or more of "but Spanos has been jerking us around for the past couple years, so we're sick of it" (which is true and legit) or the usual "San Diego is just so great and there are so many things to do besides supporting the team". The ownership and the fan base can point and blame each other, and they're both right, to a point.
The thing that tips the scale for me is LA. Why would you move that team there? LA is fickle, and they don't have fans there. The most popular team is the Raiders, and after that is a mishmash of whoever is doing well and the Rams and Chargers.
Well the Chargers were in LA in the beginning in the old AFL, but I personally hate to see franchises move because I know how bad it hurts
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
I get the stadium is a dump, what I don't get from a personal perspective is the incessant notion of going to the voters to build a multi-billion dollar stadium. Asking voters to pay new taxes on anything is a hard sell.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, LA has had a "pro" team for years called USC.
So do they expect to have LA build them a stadium and one for the Rams?
I love the NFL and without my Browns I would never watch it again !!!

Is there a reason why it didn't get the votes needed ?
Because they were voting on raising taxes so a billionaire(ish) can have a new toy.
They were going to raise taxes on hotel visitors so that the residents of San Diego wouldn't be footing the bill ($650,000,000). But if the hotel tax did not raise enough money the San Diego residents would be on the hook for the money.
(This is the same tax that passed in Las Vegas, which is why it is hard to see the NFL not allowing the Raiders to move there. Turning down public would be a bad precedent for the NFL to set.)

That said, cities should have learned from our mistake. If you want a NFL team, you need a NFL stadium. Their stadium was erected in 1967. It's unrealistic to think a stadium that is 50 years old and met the needs of then, old meets the needs of today.
The NFL is glitz. Baseball is a bit different, but heck, the Friggen Yankees closed down a iconic stadium because it didn't meet the needs any longer. In baseball, history and tradition counts more than in the NFL.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

There's been economic studies done that show there's no real large benefit for larger market cities to even have an NFL team. Smaller markets like Green Bay and Cleveland need them, but San Diego is such a huge city that there's a marginal benefit at best. This won't financially cripple a city like San Diego.

There are literally hundreds of better things to do in San Diego than see the Chargers play. And they are only there eight weeks out of the year.
