Something else we can agree on

Something that really ticks me off about today's DVR. They are supposed to be so new and improved, so much nicer, then why is it YEARS ago with our VCR's we could fast forward or rewind frame by frame. One frame at a time. Which was great when I rewatched the Browns games. Now we get stuck with the DVR which all these years later can't even do the same thing

Another thing I miss is Pay Phones. Back when we had them everybody on the planet actually had faces. Now nobody has a face anymore. Only the top of the head is ever seen as people's faces have been transplanted to the screen of their cell phone. Other drivers, people next to you in church, people during a wedding, a funeral, walking through a mall, hell even two friends talking to each in the same room. YEP through their cell phones. I really wish the phones had never been invented.

I don't know if it's frame by frame, but if you hit the pause button and then hit the fast forward button it goes forward in extremely slow motion.

Perhaps that will help-prolong the agony of whatever play you're analyzing.

They were amazingly useful in the days before AC..

In fact it's kinda funny, the first car I owned was a 1967 Chevy Camaro. It had wing windows.

I'm in love with those cars.. perhaps when I finally retire, I'll see about picking one up to work on. That could be fun. Maybe a 327, 4bbl carb, dual exhaust,,,,, yeah baby. LOL

This isn't really a technology but I miss being able to change my own oil or my own headlights. My wife has a headlight out so I went on youtube to see how to change it, you have to take darn near half the front end off just to get to it. I was never a big "mechanic" type car guy but I liked being able to do the simple things myself..

I miss the tape and rubber band contraption that kept Kosar's hand from falling off way back in the old days of 1989 and winning football.

I miss announcements like these.

I miss these when I can't get my elec. car windows in the exact open position I wanted. But a pretty good re-purpose of them here.

Good thread. I miss a lot of the things that made us think more and be less reliant. I also miss some personalized things. A few examples:

--Handwritten letters. Writing them and sending them to a person you cared about seemed to mean so much. Receiving them made you feel so good.

--Mental math. I remember going to the grocery store and having only so much money in my pocket. I would be going up and down the aisles figuring out how much I could spend. The last thing you want is to get to the checkout line and not have enough cash when some pretty girl is either checking you out or checking you out.......if you know what I mean.

--I miss using multiple sources, such as encyclopedias, journals, newspapers, magazines, books, etc to find my information. It took a long time, but I believe you learned a lot of other things as well by doing so much research.

--We used to play more when we were kids because we didn't have all the stuff kids do now. That meant we had to be very creative in coming up w/games and activities. It also meant we weren't as obese as a generation as those who followed us. Active minds and active bodies.

--This one doesn't fit my theme, but I thought hitting *69 to find out who just called you was pretty cool.

Oh Man,,, you hit on a major issue for me. My neighbor has a 2010 (I think, they all look pretty much the same) Chevy Malibu.

Head light is burned out,, $150.00 in labor to change the the damn headlight.... Stupid engineering... Really stupid. Or extremely smart, depending on your point of view.

Shower heads with sufficiently high water pressure, 3 gallon toilets, and detergent (with phosphates) that actually got your clothes clean. I get why they're all gone, but I miss them.

Thats fast motion compared to the old VCR that would actually move one frame at a time. It moves forward in half time 1/2 second per second at a steady pace. The old VCR's would stop, then you could hit the "frame" button and it would move forward about .2 of a second and stop so you could actually see, and you then had to hit the frame button again to get it to move forward another ,2 seconds and stop again.

I memorize maps, and I've done that ever since I was a kid. I especially love old maps that show how much the world has changed over the years.

We had a Beta Max. The main reason this country didn't go with Beta over VHS is that the porn industry picked VHS as its medium. The tapes were cheaper to produce. Beta came in stereo. My dad was quite happy with me when I originally hooked up his Beta through his 20 year old Curtis Mathes stereo.

Yea, with exception to my CD player everything I own dates from early 70s. Even my tape deck is a 70s Onkyo. I LOVE my Thorens. I actually also have a nice Rega TT, which is super sweet and warm sounding and a fab tonearm. But, the Thorens is a work of art. I have a Shure cartridge on it and I am one of those obsessive types who cleans their records. So, a nice wash, a sweep of the carbon fibre brush and man....a 60 year old album can sound SWEET AS! No way that anything digital comes close to putting on a record.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your pics Clem. Glad to know others still enjoy the physical product of music and putting on an LP.

If you ever get a chance to listen to Magnepan loudspeakers (especially orch and acoustic jazz), jump at it.

Music these days is mixed for headphones, thus, it lacks a lot of mid-range and the bottom is often too heavy in the mix.

I gave my son my Kef speakers after I found a used pair of Sansui's in mint condition for a steal. They are heavy as hell, huge woofer....possibly too big for the cabinet but, man, when I put on a rock album and turn it up....our house vibrates. They rock!

To be fair, the Kefs are freakin' awesome too. British made stereo equip is probably the warmest sounding stereo equip on the market. Very different than Japanese sound systems.

Oh man, I forgot all about that! It was really cool .... with a recap of the last game, a look forward to the next ..... a player profile ..... and a couple of other articles.

IIRC, they stopped publishing in the off-season, until after the draft. (when they did a recap of the players selected)

-I learned pretty much everything I learned about cars (not a whole lot... but enough I haven't paid a mechanic in close to a decade or more...) working on a '78 Jeep CJ5. Engine, battery, carb, radiator, starter, transmission... that's about all you needed!

-My parents didn't have a huge record collection, but I remember always listening to bands like Boston, Foreigner, Journey, and guys like James Taylor. Sounded sooooo awesome on vinyl! We also listened to a lot of the comedians of the day like Bill Cosby when he still did standup and Rodney Dangerfield.

-Payphones.... dang... you were taking your life in your hands every time you put one in your hands! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM smelled like stale cig smoke, EVERY SINGLE PHONE BOOK had THE page you needed already torn out, I always intuitively felt like my ear was going to get an STD even before I knew what an STD was... but it was all worth it just to stick your finger in the swinging coin return slot to see if someone left a quarter in there

Does anyone miss the enjoyment of going to a drive-in movie theater? In the '70's I used to operate the carbon arc film projectors.

I probably had ~ 100 cassette tapes. Mostly greatest hits: Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Three Dog Night, Tommy James and the Shondells, Alice Cooper, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Who…

Also the comedians of the time; BIll Cosby, Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, Steven Wright, George Carlin…

I have absolutely no clue why I like that movie. Definitely out of line with my typical movie preference. (I guess a strange feeling of nostalgia)

Lancaster still has a very nice, old fashion drive-in theater.

Manual can openers that actually work for more than a month or so before the opening teeth start to wear out.

That is all we use. My wife being English refused to buy an electric can opener saying it was one of the laziest inventions. We have a big, chunky, sharp one that we brought with us from the UK.

I don't think my kids even know what an electric can opener looks like or how it works.

Same here. We had a Cuisinart electric can opener we must've got as a housewarming gift or something about 10 years ago. After about 6 months, I threw it in the trash and have been using the same manual OXO can opener ever since. Much more efficient.

Electric can openers likely do have a place for more feeble or arthritic folks, however.

Would you guys mind posting the brand name of these can openers? We went through a stretch where we went through three or four sorry things before we got the one we have now and I'm worried about how much longer it will be with us.

I have an electric can opener, that opens around the rim of the can. It works well.

Arthritis is a real pain.

I had a box full of cassettes, as well as a bunch of VHS movies, that I found when going through my stuff several years ago. There must have been several hundred of them. I gave them to my church for the Youth Group mission trip. They fund their mission trip themselves, 100%, every year, through their own fundraisers. I also gave them a bunch of VHS tapes, that had probably been watched once or twice each.

I was shocked when they told me that every single one sold.

Ours is so old and has been in dishwasher that the brand label has been removed. Sorry. But, it is chunky, sharp as hell (and we have had it for over 10 years) and it has rubber on the handles making it easier on the hands to hold as you turn to cut.

I agree. I don't like the clutter on the counter or hanging from the bottom of a cabinet. Also, they aren't easy to clean.

Just give me something with long enough handles to give some leverage, and a turn spindle with hand holds that don't hurt your hands, and a gear that doesn't slip.

I know they can be made. My Mom had the same one for maybe 50 years.

I want one of these, and a kitchen big enough to have it.

We've had this can opener for about 9-10 years and still works like the day we got it. Probably got it at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Do any of you Dawgs still have one of the old Boston wall mounted pencil sharpeners?? I loved using those even if sharpening your pencil was the equivalent of putting meat through a grinder

They last longer and are more efficient than even the most expensive electric pencil sharpeners.

It's what a stylus used to be... it left a mark when you dragged it across paper.

It was also a mystery for the ages. Every pencil was a #2... yet no one knew what happened to the #1. Some say it went cyborg and became a mechanical pencil. Some say it WAS the #1, but he checked his privilege. Some say the #2 was a once in a lifetime genius, the likes of Einstein or Stephen Hawking, people who might be Aliens. Some say the #2 pencil is what Nicolai Tesla became after testing his Doomsday Device.

No one really knows and we may never know now that the #2 has been relegated to Antiquity.

I'm not sure of the brand, but there is a pencil sharpener in my basement, screwed into one of the support posts.

It's probably a Boston lol
