Yeah.
In 2015, the Rams were 13th in scoring defense at 20.6 pts per game. In 2016, the Rams were 23rd in scoring defense at 24.6 pts per game.
In 2015, the Rams gave up 30+ pts 4 times and 40+ pts 0 times. In 2016, the Rams gave up 30+ pts 6 times and 40+ pts 3 times, including 3 of their last 6 games.
I think losing talented players had more to do w/the Rams defensive scoring results rather than Williams forgetting how to coach. And I also believe that the Brown's poor defensive showing had more to do w/lack of talent than coaching.
But hey............that's just me. They also managed to do that while giving up 500 less yards on the season (2015 5885 yards - 23rd, 2016 5392 yards - 9th). I wonder what the opponents' starting field position difference was from 2015 to 2016. Not saying I disagree with you, just saying it's complicated.

That could be, but I was never a fan of using Yards Allowed as a gauge of how good or bad a defense is.
Look, I don't think there is much doubt that the Ram's defense declined this year. If people on here don't agree.........that's fine.
I wasn't making the point to bash Williams. I was making the point because he lost some key players and his D from this past season wasn't as talented as his D in 2015.
And again.............no one can tell me that the Brown's had more talent on their defense than the Rams or that Cleveland's offense and special teams did not put Horton's D in bad situations.
I am not a fan of firing coaches every freaking year and then expecting better results. I mean............Good God..........haven't we seen this movie before.
Oh, and steve..........I'm not directing that last part towards you. I just got on a bit of a roll. LOL

So I thought I'd look a little more into this. The Rams defense, while giving up a lot of points, allowed the 9th-fewest yards in the league despite their offense running the fewest plays in the league: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/#all_drivesBut then, the same was true last year. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2015/#all_drivesAh, found the opponents starting position against. It was not bad actually, so can't blame that part on the offense. 2015: 29.6yard line, 1.52 PPD (7th-best) http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2015/opp.htm#all_drives2016: 27.3 yard line, 1.85 PPD (14th-best) http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/opp.htm#all_drivesSo yeah, more data supports a Rams' defense decline. At least this data does. But yeah I agree with your premise that losing talent, especially Janoris Jenkins and Chris Long (*edit -- and Nick Fairley), is probably the major factor for the decline.

I really don't get why you keep harping on the firing of Horton. Yes we lack talent on defense and that is a good part of why we stunk so bad this year but Hue clearly thought a change needed to be made for whatever reason for this team to succeed so he made it. What would you have him do keep Horton just for the sake of it when Hue obviously doesn't think he's the best man for the job?

I have one more, but I really doubt this will be asked:
How confident are you that you will be given enough time in Cleveland given the organization's propensity to fire coaches on a yearly basis?
It's certainly not worse than the Three Stooges question that was asked a few years ago...LOL I was shocked when Hue came here, given the way Haslam throws the table over every couple of years .....but the more I thought about it, the more I think that many, many NFL coaches are supremely confident in their abilities, and think that they are going to be the one(s) to turn things around, and not have to worry about ever being fired.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I'd be more concerned about the firing of Horton if we turned around and hired another 3-4 guy. That would tend to imply that the D-showing was the DC's fault.
Hue is choosing to go forward with a 4-3 guy. I think that eliminates the picture that Horton is begin made a scapegoat.

Vers,
Those are great questions. Honestly, though, I do expect that last question to be asked. It'll definitely be reworded and PC'ified, but it'll be asked. Anything having anything to do with Haslam's quick trigger finger is low-hanging fruit to the press, and a new coach is coming to town.
Clevesteve, Those are some interesting numbers regarding total yards and scoring defense. It definitely muddies the water in terms of figuring out what went wrong with Williams' d, but it does tell us that there's more to it than any one thing. Thanks for digging that up.

Gregg Williams- 1 Tony Grossi- 0
Tony got clowned by Williams. It was the first question of the entire press conference and Williams responds "Are you Tony?" Haha, it's like he was warned about that guy before hand, and based on the question, knew it must've been him.
You guys have to listen to it. Hilarious.

It was hilarious! Guy is cocky, confident and talks alot. IF.. it all works out the Browns D may become worthy of the "Dawgs" title again.

They also had a -15 swing in turnover ratio, from 2015 to 2016. The O threw twice as many INTs, yet the D only had 3 fewer INTs than the previous year. Also on offense, there were 31 more sacks given up and six more fumbles.

I'm not sure bro lmao Oh, I don't think this was an indication of any bad or good to come from next year's defense. I just don't like Tony Grossi and welcome anyone to Cleveland who dismantles him in the first 30 seconds of Q & A time.

I actually loved the fact that he took a solid legit shot at the Browns organization and said Hue was the reason he was here with the comment about the organization thats had 9 head coaches in 14 years without being specific lol.
I am a big fan of Williams as a DC. Its Buddy Ball in Cleveland.

I encourage everyone to listen to this one. The fact that he jumped in tocorrect the person that asked about him working for Hue to say working with Hue, I thought was a very key moment.

I've only watched the first ten minutes of the press conference so far, but Williams is as intense of a coach as I've ever seen.

I really don't get why you keep harping on the firing of Horton. Then, you haven't really been reading w/an open mind. I have been pretty damn clear as to why.

j/c: So Williams dodges the question, acts like an ass, and our posters love him. We'll see how much you love him at the end of next year. You know........we kinda had similar conversations many times before. Including just a year ago when people were calling Hue the QB Whisperer and how Horton's D would be so much better than O'Neils. Ya never learn.

Damn fine interview. First time I've heard him speak. With him and Bob Wylie,Hue has brought in coaches with major personalities. I mean that in a good way. How that translates to playing football,I don't know, but I like them both.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem
