I don't see Greco getting re-signed. He's already 31 and they [theoretically] already drafted his replacement (Drango).

Kirksey and Bitonio should be extended now, don't let them get to the point where they smell free agency.

Crowell on a one year deal is fine. Running backs and long term deals scare the poop out of me.

I don't think Gordon is on a RFA deal. He still hasn't played, meaning his contract status has not changed.

This is not free agency. We are re-signing our own guys before the new league year has started.

Re-signing, heading off at the pass before they're free agents, writing checks, etc. etc. wink

All the same to me.

See. This is what I'm talking about.

You have to be SELECTIVE about who you've pegged to sign that 2nd contract. You can't sign them ALL.

This is what people mean by Building through the Draft. You draft guys that can step in when the time comes where you CAN'T sign every top player when their 1st contract is about to expire.

This is exactly what I meant when I said there will be people pissing and moaning when we let one of our top players leave. At some point you HAVE TO.

We need to be SURE these guys we're extending are part of the CORE of this team for the next 5+ years.

This is where we need to draft solidly, so we have depth that can step right in when we have to let a solid player leave. Especially when we get that QB and he's signed to the HUGE bucks.

That's how you build through the Draft.

While true, I still think we could get something done with Kirksey at a relatively decent amount. But it'd have to be done before the season. Another year of Kirksey at the same level and we're going to have to fork over some change.

I agree with many of the other posters here, outside of Pryor, locking up Kirksey and Bitonio now would be two very wise moves.

welp.. seems like Collins will get this deal done very soon. Super happy to keep him on.

As it pertains to Free Agency, hopefully a few guys think damn, he stayed with the Browns even after experiencing part of a 1 win season. Maybe they are building? Maybe I'll sign there too, and help out.

Wishful thinking. lol

I don't think so but I could be totally wrong here. Miller has 74 sacks in his career; Collins has 12.5 sacks.

My reply is using your stats, but really addressing why Collins may have caused a problem in NE.

Collins knows that sacks and pressures are a big part of getting a big contract. Bill plays a very diciplined system and possibly Collins wasn't getting enough opportunities to rush the passer.

That might explain why Bill let him go.He had a unhappy player on his hands.

It was reported that Collins turned down a fairly sizable extension in New England, ($11 million/year) so I think that New England thinking he couldn't play in New England, as some have implied, is really overstated. Linky Dinky Doo

I think that it has been long known that Belichick is very careful in spending money, and moves on when a player no longer fits his valuation. It was also opined that Belichick wanted to send a message to other guys pondering contract offers ..... and I could see that being the case as well.

The Patriots spend very sparingly. They are one of the few teams that have spent less than us.

I just watched Rapport suggest that the number has been agreed to - and its the details and incentives that now need to be knocked into shape.

$12.5 Mill per year - more than Luke Kuechly in Charlotte by a smidge, but wayyyyy under Vom Miller money.

The front office got slammed by some on here when we traded for Collins because the fear was he'd be gone after the season... or because Collins wanted Von Miller type money. . . I'd say it'd be quite a steal to get Collins talent on board for a 3rd/4th round pick and then sign him to the sort of contract Rapport is saying.

Browns finalizing new contract for LB Jamie Collins

Cleveland's front office plans to keep impending free agent Jamie Collins off the open market.

The Browns are finalizing a long-term contract with Collins that will eclipse the per-year salary of Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly ($12.36 million), NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the process. The deal should be done in the next few days, Rapoport added.

Collins was acquired from the Patriots in exchange for a compensatory draft pick, stunning the football world at the trade deadline. Immediately featured as an every-down linebacker, Collins racked up 69 tackles and two sacks in eight games with Cleveland.

The Pats had offered Collins in excess of $10 million annually, Rapoport reported in late October, while Collins placed his own value among the highest-paid linebackers in the league.

Regardless of the price tag, keeping Collins in-house makes sense for an organization with a surfeit of salary-cap space and precious few Pro Bowl-caliber talents on the roster. He's a more natural fit in new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' 4-3 scheme after moonlighting at outside linebacker in Ray Horton's 3-4 system in the season's final two months.

Although Collins was accused of freelancing too much in New England, at least one former teammate viewed him as the defense's best player. Williams figures to build his defense around linebackers Collins and Christian Kirksey, defensive tackle Danny Shelton and cornerback Jamar Taylor.

And he has shown up well. Pay him. Just a necessary evil IMO. Comes with the turf, so to speak. Lock up Pryor next.

Long Term Jamie Collins.

Does this help you beat Pittsburgh? I don't know.

I say, go and get RaeKwon McMillian.

Does that help you beat Pittsburgh? I think so.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Wait...........you are gloating and dancing because Collins got more than Kuechly? Sorry, but he is not even close to Luke in terms of performance.

With that said...........I am glad the Browns kept Collins. I think there is a risk there, because of NE getting rid of him for almost nothing, but he is big and fast. If we can motivate him to play hard, he could be a very good player for us.

But no..........he is not better than Kuechly.

What is our record against Pittsburgh since we got a new team?

In order to talk about beating Pittsburgh, we might need to beat them once in awhile so we can gauge what works.

Oh wait.......I just had a revelation. Pittsburgh has had 3 coaches since 1969. Yeah..............19-freaking-69.

The Browns have had 18 coaches since that time and they weren't even in the league for awhile.

You wanna beat the Steelers.............stop firing coaches.

But, the geniuses on this board just love when we fire coaches. Probably because it has worked so well in the past.

Kirksey? I just don't know right now.

What we need to do is have Williams and his crew look hard at him. Then decide. Just guessing here, he'd sign for 5 or 6 a year? I think I'd be inclined to do that, but I want Williams take first. And I'm not sure we'll get that until during the season. Williams said something about not watching any film, he needs hands-on in the meeting room and on the field. That's obviously not happening for awhile.

Williams could probably be here long term. Like Horton, I'm not sure he'll ever get another HC opportunity. Good for US! I want long term.

There's ONE guy on this defense with a BIG cap number that I can't wait to see Williams take on. That be Haden.

I know this. There's TWO FA defensive players I want on this team immediately.

Bouye CB
Easley DT

Maybe the dude from the Giants? Name escapes me at the moment. DT.

Hopefully Williams beats the table and tells everyone that needs to listen, GET US MYLES GARRETT.

Hooker is a dream I think. I also think Berry's a dream. I'm not sure about MacDonald and I know zilch about Jefferson. But we need to find a FS somewhere.

33 would be the place to get our pick of what's left after Adams and Hooker. FA will dictate alot. Do we use 33 for Garoppolo?

Hopefully we ink a FA FS that STARTS immediately. If so, we've addressed ALL levels of defense including signing Collins.

If we do that, it opens up the 12 pick for possibly Williams the WR Clemson.

And use 33 on Garoppolo. I'm down with that plan.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports free agent LB Jamie Collins is seeking $12 million annually.

The Browns have made "significant progress" in extension talks, with a contract between the sides expected to be finalized soon. Collins is looking for Luke Kuechly money (5 years, $61.8M). With the most cap space in the league, Cleveland shouldn’t have trouble getting a deal done.

Any number in that sort of range is good for the Browns. The number 1 thing is to keep him as he is talented and fills a big piece on D.

Contrary to the way some posters manipulate what is/was said ... the comparison to Luke Kuechly was because he is one of the best or perhaps the best interior LB. And his contract breaks down to about $12.3 mill per year. . . . that is light years away from Von Miller's contract who is the best sack machine at OLB. There was a lot of noise on the board by posters who only ever want to bash the FO that we'd never resign Collins because he wanted Von Miller money ($19 mill per year). Hopefully this is a big step in the right direction for the D.

Here is an excerpt from a larger article about the Brown's defense:

Quote:
What wasn’t as expected was the general ineffectiveness of Jamie Collins after coming over from New England. During his eight games with the Browns, Collins surrendered 27 catches on 30 targets for 235 yards and two touchdowns without getting his hand on a single pass.

It is interest that the summary pointed out Collins as the Browns have a major decision to make on him this off-season.

When the Browns swung the trade there was talk the Collins, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent in March, would be in line for “Von Miller-type” money when he signed a new deal. (Although Collins subsequently denied that was the case.)

Once the season was over, however, Collins did say that he would be OK remaining with the Browns “if the money is right.”

While Pro Football Focus is not the final say on any personnel moves that the Browns will make, the fact that Collins may not have played as well as the “pay him whatever it takes” crowd would have you believe should at least give the Browns pause while negotiating a new deal.

General ineffectiveness? He may not have covered TE's the best, as those numbers seem to indicate. However, with terrible safety help and a lack of pass rush, who could?

He made plays that most LBs could not. Hopefully with time and a better supporting cast TE defense will improve as a result of the collective team effort.

We've been needing to shore up TE coverage for awhile, but I'm not sure how we expected it to work with our safeties.

Without a sense of the coverage (man/zone) and time involved, those numbers are "generally ineffective" in painting a picture of what happened.

As you've said before, we can't keep letting talent go.

I imagine fitting in with the rest of the D in coverage is one of the tougher aspects of changing teams and systems. He was thrown right into the fire with minimal practice. After he was here, we seemed to continue shuffling safeties.

I'm not really trying to argue with you (more examining the article), but what is your take on it?

I only put that article out there to provide more information so people can make informed decisions.

My take on Collins? I don't think he nearly as good as Kuechly, but the Browns have to keep their better players because they are so devoid of talent.

I do have some concerns because it's bewildering that BB would get rid of him for so little in return. People say that BB must think Jimmy G stinks because he is trying to trade him, but the compensation is much greater for Jimmy G than Collins.

Makes one wonder..........

Yep. He whispered it into my ear last night. I'm not sure what BB's philosophy means for the Browns, considering he's not part of the organization.

I've seen a lot of people suggest not dealing for Jimmy based on the history of how back up NE QB's have performed once they left NE ... I have not seen anyone who says they think Jimyy G is trash. There's a big difference.

I'd be really happy with Jimmy G - but not for either first round pick. And not for the #33 either.

I'm sorry but if you're worried about Jimmy being like Matt cassel then you think Jimmy stinks. And thats fine. But own it. It's a cowardly cop out to say otherwise imo.

Disagree entirely. Maybe the difference is too subtle for you?

People are concerned that Jimmy G is the next Cassel .... nothing to do with either QB's performance on the field. But everything to do with the head coach and his ability to run his team and his ability to judge talent. And Jimmy G doesn't have to fall off a cliff like Cassel did in order for the trade not to be worth it to the Browns.

Jimmy G is not trash. He is not Cassel. There is history of NE ex-QB's playing below expectations. . . . that's it in a not shell. I'd be happy to have Jimmy as QB - he's a much better than anything we have and he's going to play better in 2017 for the Browns than any QB we draft. But I still think there is some risk and I wouldn't part with either first round picks. I'd prefer not to have to deal the #33 either and Hue would have to be sold 100% if that was the deal.
