http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...jimmy-garoppoloRegardless of how the final few weeks unfold, the New England Patriots will have a Jimmy G question to grapple with in the offseason.
Jimmy Garoppolo is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract, making it the ideal time for Bill Belichick to see a return on his second-round investment.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said Sunday on NFL GameDay Morning that the Patriots will listen to offers for the quarterback, but it's not a given Jimmy G will get shipped out to the top bidder.
"The Patriots are open to trading Jimmy Garoppolo and they are going to listen to all offers, as they have over the last couple years for Garoppolo -- and they have gotten a couple inquiries," Rapoport said. "But from what I am being told there are several complicating factors: First of all, the price tag, expected to be at least a first-round pick -- just based off the quarterback market. Will anyone give them that? Second of all, are the Patriots really comfortable going forward with Jacoby Brissett as their backup quarterback in case Tom Brady gets hurt? That might be the biggest question of all."
The Eagles got first- and fourth-round picks from the Vikings in the Sam Bradford trade, so that could be the starting point if a team is desperate enough -- as Minnesota was last season. Any team that gives up a top pick would need assurances they could get a long-term deal done with Garoppolo.
The price for Garoppolo could change depending on what happens with Kirk Cousins' contract situation in Washington and where Tony Romo ends up. A team like the Cleveland Browns would make a lot of sense for a landing spot -- former Browns GM and long-time Belichick confidant Mike Lombardi has already reported Cleveland would go hard after Garoppolo.
The fact that Garoppolo only has two career starts under his belt could scare some teams from coughing up a first-round pick or sinking huge money into Brady's understudy. While we view Garoppolo as an exponentially better prospect than Brock Osweiler, the Texans' $72 million boondoggle on an unproven player could cause other GMs to overcorrect, and become skittish this year.
It will certainly take more than the third-round compensation pick the Pats could get back down the road -- if they held onto Garoppolo and he left after 2017 -- but don't underestimate Belichick's love of compiling draft picks influencing the situation. If the coach is comfortable with his QB situation behind Brady, then he's not going to hang onto a trade chip just because he can't pilfer a high first-round pick.
Don't expect a resolution to the Garoppolo question soon after the season. Belichick will play poker with the rest of the league, banking on someone paying up if they are left without a quarterback following free agency or the draft.

Well, there are a lot of plausible answers to the continual questions that some posters keep asking over and over. And they sure sound similar to what bone, Razor, KWhip, and myself have been trying to say.

BB will get a bunch for him, I suspect. A first round pick or more, if it gets you a starter, is decent. This well may not be a 'perfect world' trade where JG's value is pegged and the trade is market value. QB is going to be higher need and higher cost as a result. But you need to bite some bullets and then get your role players cheaper, relatively so.
This is a tough one to get done if it is a bidding war with say three or four teams involved. Questions that will remain are "How high CAN we go?" and also "How high SHOULD we go?" I expect he will be overpaid and know that going into talks; but we should go into it with eyes open and a ceiling set. It is not, I hope, JG at any price. I think in an expensive market like the Pats, we should muddy it up some at the outset and try to work some FA into it with other players as well. Get more chips and options on the table. Possibly dilute the price and increase the package value. Just a suggestion. It is all about what you walk away with.

Ya know, Maybe it's because I don't follow the Pats, or maybe it's because I just don't care, but I've not heard one official word that the Pats are interested in trading Jimmy G.
Not that I expect them to come right out and say that, but there hasn't even been a hint of it except from the press.

If the Browns deem Garropolo the best option, then make the trade. In that scenario, I'd personally be OK sending 33 and then a conditional pick dependent on numbers next year which could end up being another 2nd in 2018 where we have 2 2nd round picks. Those 2 2nds equate to low first.
As for the contract - why not simply let him play? If he isn't the answer, or we aren't sure we can either move on (Draft Darnold!??!) or franchise him.
If he plays well, we either negotiate from a position of knowledge towards the end of next year to get him signed up long term or franchise him. We have the cap, which is the issue the Patriots would face in locking him up with the tag.
I just don't see the issue contract wise. Let him play, decide after that. The key decision is the draft collateral price AND whether in fact New England will deal him of course.
EDIT:I'd rather pay more after he proves his worth rather than blindly negotiate an Osweiler type deal.

Why would New England talk about this w/reporters? LOL
It's no mystery. It's just a poster not wanting to hear what is being said.

You won't really hear anything till after the superbowl or it could be considered tampering. You kinda missed my point. I was questioning the value of the statement that they want or are willing to trade Jimmy G. Nothing about any particular team involved with a trade. You are right, as of right now, that would be considered tampering.

j/c WalterFootball Senior Bowl Rumors Link There has been talk that the New England Patriots are seeking a first-round pick for backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but in surveying teams around the league, they don't think Garoppolo is worthy of that price tag. One AFC general manager told WalterFootball.com that he thinks Garoppolo is worthy of a third-round pick, but the Patriots could probably get a second-round selection for him. An NFC general manger said he thinks Garoppolo would go for a second-round pick. Another NFC general manager said they thought a third-round pick would be fair. All of the general managers cited the trades of Alex Smith, Matt Cassel and Matt Schaub. Each member of that trio went for a second-round pick when dealt. All three of those quarterbacks also had more starts and experience than Garoppolo does. The general managers thought this offseason was the best opportunity for the Patriots to deal Garoppolo if they want to get something quality in return. One team that has been rumored to be in the market for trading for Garoppolo is the Houston Texans. However, in speaking with Texans sources, that is very unlikely. Houston doesn't sound willing to be interested in dealing the necessary picks for Garoppolo. The Texans are definitely in the market to add talent to their quarterback competition, but they are more likely to select a signal-caller in the early rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. According to sources, if the Texans do acquire a veteran, it would probably be a free agent like Jay Cutler or Tony Romo if they were released and willing to take a cheap contract. The Texans are the only playoff team in the market for a starting quarterback, so if either Cutler or Romo wants a shot to win before the end of their careers, Houston could be their best opportunity. The Texans won't be able to offer a big contract for either veteran because of the money taken up by Brock Osweiler. Thus, the most likely move will be taking a quarterback prospect with one of their early picks in the 2017 NFL Draft. Read more at http://www.walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2017rumors.php#MkcYorZ7Z3BhFOG6.99Not sure of the accuracy, but the arguments make sense to me. I think Jimmy G would be good for us...at the right price.

Again this seems to still be in the Rumor stages. I have not heard a word from NE of course their off season has not started so that does not mean it won't happen.
The only fact I seem to have seen is Lombardi stating he thinks that it will happen and happen with Cleveland. And that the price will be a first and a 4th round draft pick, coincident is that is what the Eagles got for Bradford.
So is this inside info from Lombardi or just some banter that makes for good discussion?
After the SB I think we will get the gist of how much this is going to happen and how much it will involve us. I don't think there will be a lot of competition with first round picks thrown around as Lombardi predicts.

In the other thread closed now. There was talk of comparison of then coming out in 2014 if so how would JG fair in this draft class.
Well at the time he was the 5th QB taken in that draft. There is no way I can believe in this draft he would be the overall #1 pick or #12. Sorry too many are trying to assess his worth on his value NOW and placing him into the draft.
Just would like to see us make the right move. I don't really trust the fact its a team that is willing to let him move on...I do get the fact we are talking Tom Brady, I get it. Still I'm tired of getting grrrr don't think its appropriate to say what I want but it fits so well! Ummm other teams Hand me downs.
Its like I am the 4th boy in my family and I just want something that is NEW FOR ME!!!!
That's all and I don't wish to give up a first round pick for him.
jmho maybe #33. That would give the Patriots back to back picks...

I would offer them our top pick in the 3rd rd. even that seems a bit high for someone who hasn't played a lot, but if I was going after him thats what I would offer ...

Another NFC general manager said they thought a third-round pick would be fair. I believe the Browns have the #65 pick, which would be at the end of the 2nd round/beginning of the 3rd round...
...that IMO, would be a fair trade, considering that it is likely that several veteran QBs could be available in 2017.
I'm not totally against obtaining Garoppolo..I'm against trading draft value that the Browns could use to draft their own QB, rather than handing any of our most valuable draft picks over to the Patriots. The Browns first 4 draft picks should be off limits when discussing trade with the Patriots.
The 65 pick plus a conditional 3 or 4th round pick in a future draft, based on JimmyG's performance would be decent. Our front office may need to get creative while protecting the draft picks we need to build the Browns now!
Also, I would not be against trading for Garoppolo and still drafting a QB with the 2nd first round pick or any of the other picks the Browns have.
This draft has to about building the Browns...not greasing the palms of the talent rich Patriots.

We need someone to step in right away, and no one in this draft class has that rating. IMO

This is why some of you can't figure it out. Your controlled by emotions and false pretenses instead of logic. When you evaluate a player forget what school he played for and forget what former team he played for. Evaluate the player purely on skill alone. Why? Because history shows that their college days have very little to do with success in the NFL because there is a HUGE difference from part time players who play a little bit while trying not to flunk college and players who eat, sleep, and breathe football 24/7 for years. Some can handle it some can't.
Jimmy is a guy who has the skill set. He has the mental fortitude. He has high character. He has everything you could ever want in a QB. When some of you say third rounder I just can't have respect for your opinion because it's easy to tell you're basing it on some emotional trauma nonsense instead of logic. Either that or you just not capable of evaluating QB's. That's OK it's not like the team owner can either since he was stupid enough to listen to fan hype and draft Manziel even though there was plenty of info to be had on his mental faults before the draft.
Hopefully we have a scouting department that can separate emotion from evaluation and a staff making decisions on skill sets and integrity as a person/player instead of warm fuzzy feelings. That is the Paul Brown method that once made us great.
"Detailed scientific study, the pictures never lie." ... Paul Brown

I've made it pretty clear I'm not interested in one of the top 3 qbs this year. That said anyone else think the FO may consider a rental of Jimmy?
Hear me out. Most everyone is saying to trade for him and lock him up. If we were to trade for him I think it's at least an option to do similar to what we did for Collins. Get Jimmy for 17 for 33 and a conditional pick in 18. Play him out. Franchise if needed but give the 18 rookie qbs a fair assessment compared to Jimmy's season. Franchise if needed. Let him walk if needed for a comp pick.
Now I understand the down side. If he ends up walking you lose draft value but is that loss of value equal to the lesser gamble vs taking a top 3 qbs this year? I'd personally feel most stable doing this. Sure we may lose a little value in one scenario. But what if Jimmy pans out? We win. What if Jimmy doesn't workout but we didn't lock ourselves into a 2107 1st rounder and the 2018 1st rounder does workout? Win. Anyone else think this is logical? It really only becomes a bad scenario if a 2017 1st rounder actually studs out that we pass on while both Jimmy and a 2018 1st rounder bust. Though I guess that would be typical for us lol

Ok, who knows how these QB's will turn out in year 1, I mean if we trade for Garappalo will he be worth what we give up for him? You guys don't know and neither do I, same thing if we draft one in rd. 1, will he play right away or not, we don't know, yet you say there is no chance a draft pick can start, why not? Wentz did which most expected but what about Prescott, who here would have said he could play in his 1st or 2nd year? I'm just saying a rookie could be just as capable as Garappalo that is my opinion, if we trade for him or draft a QB I will be rooting for them either way, I would just rather go the rookie rout, thats all, I may be wrong or I could be right who knows ... Thats all I'm saying it is JMO `

FWIW With all this trade talk for Jimmy G., Jason Cole of The Bleacher Report is saying that the Redskins are considering trading Kirk Cousins to either SF or CLE.
I have no idea how legit this is but it's out there.

I can't see Gruden allowing Cousins to leave with the Redskins going 8-7-1 and knocking on the playoffs this year after they made the playoffs with Cousins as their starter in 2015.
Sounds like a rumor started by Dan Snyder..a negotiating ploy.

That's how I interpreted this: I would rather spend a 1st on our guy than some other teams QB especially with that little experience and you were stating a 3rd was a bit too high for Jimmy G, not even discussing a 1st. I would not spend a 1st on Jimmy myself, and he is my choice acquisition at QB this off-season. I would not spend a 1st on anyone in the draft, either. I would be hesitant to give up our first 2nd round pick for Jimmy, but would do it. I would be leery of drafting one of the QBs at that pick. I am not saying you can't have an opinion, and that it can't be different from my mine (I am not a liberal ), just trying to understand your explanation is all.

Well Can the argument that Jimmy G. doesn't have enough NFL experience is a fair argument. I understand where folks are coming from on that perspective. I honestly would prefer to trade our 33nd pick than our #12 or our future 1st too.
I mean Kiz has first round talent but has issues with his maturity and personality that I don't think will work well in the NFL. Still on pure raw talent he is the best QB in this draft. It's also possible he matures once he is in the real world but to ME he just doesn't seem the type to accept personality changes.
Trub has the best technique of those in this draft and is a total class act. People worry about his game experience and mental toughness though.
Watson is very charismatic and fearless. He has great mobility and decent throwing skills but he lacks patience and has unreliable ball placement and tend to risk the ball too much with his throws.
I could see any of these guys being drafted at 33 but honestly IMHO Trub is the only one I would make a risk at 12 for because great technique usually leads to success more than any other factor when it comes to QBs.
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

Get JG for a 2nd and 5th and move on. I liked him coming out, like him still. Sitting behind Brady probably helped and if he's not the guy, he will do while we rebuild. With him and Kessler under contract I would feel good about heading into next season, more so than having any of the rookies.

Though I guess that would be typical for us lol I like Darnold better than any of this year's options. I'm no expert, but that's my amateur opinion. This approach allows us to take a shot on Jimmy being the answer, and if he isn't, keeps open the possibility of getting a shot at Darnold (or whoever else emerges) in 2018.

If it doesn't work out we've at least TRIED with what I consider the BEST possible solution to the CRAP we've fielded at QB for 15 years.

Thats all I'm saying it is JMO ` I don't understand this great love of Draft Picks. We had what 14 of them last year and what did we come away with? Maybe Ogbah

I think we will have to wait another season or two to really know what we came away with in the terms of Quality. Coleman looked pretty good at RT in the last game. Go back and watch some film. He had defenders on their ass many times.
One also has to consider that if a team....any team finds 2-3 solid players in any draft, they have done a good job. Far more players who get drafted never live up v the ones who do or exceed.
JMO
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong
