Report: Browns asked Deshaun Watson to play in Senior BowlBy Dan Parr College Football 24/7 Editor Published: Jan. 23, 2017 02:46 p.m. A request from the Cleveland Browns to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl wasn't persuasive enough for Deshaun Watson to participate in the all-star event. Watson, who declined an invitation to the game last week, turned the Senior Bowl down even after the Browns requested that he play, according to MMQB. The Browns are coaching the South team that Watson would have played for if he had accepted the invite, and Cleveland holds the Nos. 1 and 12 picks. "The Browns talked to him and asked him to play this week; he declined," MMQB's Peter King wrote in his Monday column. Watson's agent said last week that Watson would instead focusing on preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine (QBs report March 1). He's only a junior, but was eligible to be invited to the Senior Bowl because he has already graduated. Browns coach Hue Jackson said on Sunday that he won't hold Watson's decision against the QB. "There are going to be other guys that are not participating either, so I won't hold it against him," Jackson told cleveland.com. "I don't think that's the right thing to do. He's still a draftable player, there's still a process we have to go through to evaluate him and see if he can fit here with the Cleveland Browns." The Senior Bowl gathers more than 100 prospects each year for a week of practices, followed by the all-star game, in Mobile, Ala. Evaluators from all 32 teams attend to watch and meet with prospects that participate in the event. "Obviously we wish he were here," Jackson said. "It would've been a great chance to have an opportunity to evaluate him doing the things we do in meetings and on the practice field. But that's not going to happen, so we'll have to find a different way of evaluating him." Watson completed a grueling a 15-game season on Jan. 9, when he led Clemson to a national title victory over Alabama. NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah said after Watson's decision was revealed that he didn't believe anyone in the NFL would have a problem with Watson's choice. However, he also said Watson could've helped himself by competing -- it would've been a unique setting for Watson to compete in, the likes of which won't be replicated at the combine or his pro day. Jeremiah has Watson going to the Texans at No. 25 in his first mock draft of 2017.

After winning the championship, maybe he is afraid a bad showing would do more harm than a good showing would help his case?

If he can't handle the workload now how is he going to handle it when it's the prolevel amount of work every single day of his life. It's fine with me since I am hoping we don't draft him early on anyways. He is probably hoping he slips in the draft anyways to land on a better team.

OSTED BY: ELI MOONEYHAM JANUARY 23, 2017 It’s officially NFL Draft season. Why do I say that, you ask? Well, as usual, the Cleveland Browns have their eyes on a top draft prospect. One of those top prospects has decided to go to Twitter and post a harmless tweet, so it seemed. And as always, America is losing their minds over the social media post. National champion and former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson tweeted this mysterious tweet earlier today: Follow Deshaun Watson ✔ @DeshaunWatson4 God protect me from the evil 9:15 AM - 23 Jan 2017 1,665 1,665 Retweets 3,149 3,149 likes So what does this exactly mean? Most of the “Twitterverse” seems to believe this is about the thought of the Browns drafting Watson. This also comes after the report that the Browns had reached out to Watson about playing for Hue Jackson and his coaching staff in the Senior Bowl, an offer that Watson declined. What do you think this Tweet means? Tweet us @NEOSportsInside and @Eli_Mooneyham to let us know what you think http://www.neosportsinsiders.com/deshaun...-bashes-browns/wow read the article...Browns fans started bashing him instantly...don't think he wants to come here after that...we running him out of town before he ever came here...do you think he was talking about playing for us? didn't sound like it to me.
I bet you're wondering the samething I did, why O' why didn't I take the...blue pill

these players want to go out on a high note. a lot of top guys in college don't play in the senior bowl, from what i'm reading.
besides, we have the combine, pro day, and private workouts (is that the same as pro day? not sure) to talk with him and evaluate him.

I am talking about him tweeting "protect me from evil"
and then a butt ton of us Browns fans starting bashing him on twitter...that is what I am talking about.

yea i dunno bro lol
it's like this....i got nothing lmao. my best guess is that there's probably a lot of people (read: everybody) telling him to stay away from cleveland if at all possible.
the reality is that every QB is most likely being told that same thing. and so now you have to wonder, is it Hue, or the browns organization as a whole that these QB's want to avoid, IF that's indeed what he meant by the tweet.
it's all speculation, we won't know for a while.

A team with the 1st pick personally asks you and you say no? Then the cryptic tweet?
He's making it easier and easier. I hope he pulls an Eli or Elway.

maybe, maybe not. hard to say. I don't like to read too much into something. that is haw things get twisted...I'm not a Watson guy anyway, so don't really care one way or another...just thought is was funny we jumped on him for a perceived slight in a random tweet.

lol i don't want him either way so let him do as he wishes =) I think other teams will probably see it as an issue moreso that we will. Then again they might all chime in that they don't blame him ^^

Cris Carter to Watson, don't trust Browns with your career http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/cris-carter-rips-cleveland-browns-deshaun-watson-draft-012317Add that article to the fuel with the "cryptic" Tweet haha. IMO, we shouldn't draft/trade for a Qb until we have a stable offensive line. We'll just crush their mental mindset along with their bodies. If I had a penny for every ice pack used on some Browns Qb last year, I probably would start crunching the numbers to see if I could retire lol.

Watson declines Senior Bowl invite, along with Jonathan Allen and Reuben Foster, all whom played a long grueling season and have to prepare for the combine and pro-day stuff. AFTER Watson already declined there is a report that the Browns asked him to attend the Senior Bowl AFTER he already declined. And quelle surprise he didn't reverse his previously made decision to attend. Now because the media is telling us, Watson doesn't want to play for the Browns and that is why he declined the Senior Bowl invite. Ummm....okay....

Honestly,
If the coaching staff and FO feel that Watson is the guy, and they draft him #1 overall, then fine.
At some point, we need to stop making excuses and just draft the guy and roll with him for 3 straight years. These one and done crap we keep doing with Therese QB's is annoying. We never let a player grow into that position.

Let's face it, we know what's gonna happen, don't we? Big Ben retires and the Steelers get Watson late in the first round, who goes on to win 3 superbowls.

We never let a player grow into that position. I have the opposite opinion on this one. I don't think there is a QB worthy of being drafted high in this draft. I could be wrong about that. It's hard to evaluate collegiate QBs these days, so I am not saying I am right. We did that crap w/Timid. We did it to some extent w/BQ. We did it w/freaking Weeden. I told y'all he was trash about a 1/4 of the way through season one. So, if we are married to the guy, that means we ignore the QB prospects in the following two drafts, and by all accounts, next year's crop of QBs is way better than this year's. However, from what I have seen.........this year's crop of QBs have huge holes in their games are very, very risky. My problem [and here is where I disagree w/you] is that if we draft Watson or Trub that high, we are married to him for 3 years. We're going to hear over and over and over that you can't evaluate a qb until three years have gone by. I understand that is not a given and things can change. I am not ignorant. However, choosing a QB just because you need one is pretty stupid. And it's backfired for us in the past. I still think the SAFEST and SMARTEST route for the Browns to go is to trade for either Jimmy G or Cousins. I don't think Cousins will be available, but you never know.

Watson stock is as high as it will get, and correct me if I am wrong but none of the other top QB's are participating. So he gets to go out and possibly put bad film out while all the others train for the combine.

We haven't drafted a QB #1 overall since Couch, though.
At some point the trigger has to get pulled on somebody with high boom/bust potential, and that's literally every first round QB in history.
If they feel it's Trubisky then ok. If it's Watson, ok. If they feel they can pick either one at 12, that would be ideal.
But I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of every year finding reasons to put off taking THE guy, and then come the end of the season, always going "damn, we should've taken so and so".

And Timid was a huge failure who alientated the fan base.
Not arguing w/you, bro............I just don't like any of these QBs. Not saying I am right..............just voicing my opinion.

I agree with tour evaluations of these qb's. If we drafted one at #33 I could live with it but not at #1 or even #12. We have too many holes and there is too much talent in the 1st 12 picks to pass on it.

What did you say? I'll wait til he plays Ohio state and see what I think about him.
He crushed us, and then he went out there and beat Alabama.
At this point, you're hating just to hate.

When Watson leads us to the playoffs in year two, if we draft him, make sure you remember this.

Crazy right? Why would a coach have a high opinion of a kid that led your team to back to back title games culminating in a National Championship against the best defense in college football?

However, choosing a QB just because you need one is pretty stupid.
Agreed on a lot that you said...and even though I supported most of our QBs I did not pimp any of them pre draft. Except for Manziel - I just didn't know he was a drunk.
But the quoted statement above is not quite right.
there is a phrase from many many prominent football people regarding the draft and QBs.
If you don't have a Franchise QB you CANNOT pass on one in the draft. I know we did that last year.
Of course the key is we have to be sure they are a Franchise QB Prospect, obviously.
But we are right in there with almost having to take a QB...now if we can hope for runs on the board that the many teams needing a QB 49ers, Bears, Jets, dont take a QB so that we get our choice of QB at pick #12. That is fine.
Its just its been 17 years since we had the overall #1 pick in the draft and the choice of the best QB in this draft class!
tough call and as you said its hard to evaluate QBs...even before all the spread offenses it was hard.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

For the moment I am going to exclude Garoppolo. And again exclude all the QB prospects in this draft except the top three; Watson, Kizer, Trubisky.
You can ding each guy for whatever reason you chose. Each guy has pros and cons.
No single prospect stands head shoulders above the others.
If Hue is set on taking one of these guys it is going to come down to which guy gives him the feeling that he is going to be able to execute the offense that Hue wants to run.
In addition there has to be some sort of chemistry between the coach and "his" quarterback. Belichick and Brady work together.
All three of these prospects has the physical tools to play in the NFL. With Wentz last year his maturity and leadership were clear and obvious.
Watson has been described has being a leader and a guy who commanded the offense. I have not read or heard much about Trubisky and Kizer. Trubisky from what little I have read about him in regards to character and leadership has been described as a quiet leader. Leading by example which is the way Mariota was described. I have nothing on Kizer.
During the private workouts and meetings one of these guys has to stand out as being capable of leading team. The term franchise quarterback is thrown around. LeBron is a franchise. Not only a great player but the face of the franchise. Not every quarterback who can throw the ball can lead a city. What surrounds guys like LeBron and Brady not everyone can handle that.
Weeden. Never in a million years will I ever be able to understand that pick. What a hayseed.
If none of the top three can separate from the other than maybe none are worth drafting.

.....I'm done. Just heard them talking about this on WKNR... Dabo Swinney 3 years ago on drafting Tajh Boyd: "Whoever gets him," Swinney said. "He is going to change their franchise just like he changed Clemson. That young man changed Clemson. We have won more games in the last three years than anytime in the history of the school - back to back eleven win seasons. That's the first time that has ever happened. Tajh Boyd has been our leader. Not just the quarterback. He's been the leader of this team." "I describe him as a bigger Russell Wilson. Everyone knocked Russell coming out. 'Well you better go play baseball. You are not this and not that.' He's a third round draft pick, and now he is a Super Bowl champion. It is the same thing with Tajh Boyd. I think Tajh Boyd is going to be a great NFL quarterback. His skill plus his intangibles that he brings are special. And he is still developing. It's all still out in front of Tajh Boyd." Link
