CLEVELAND, Ohio - Joe Thomas is in Orlando preparing to represent the Browns in Sunday's Pro Bowl, and found time Thursday for an interview with The Dan Patrick Show.
The Browns have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, so, naturally, that came up. Patrick asked Thomas what position the team should target at the top of the draft.
"I would say you want to go defense. I think you need to get a pass rusher," said Thomas. "I think you've got to be careful reaching for a quarterback at No. 1 because if they fail, they don't help your team at all. Where if you pick a defensive lineman and maybe they don't live up to the hype you can still find a way to get them on the field and to have an impact."
Thomas went on to say that the Browns are a team that needs players to start and contribute, and taking a quarterback first overall would be a greater risk.
You can hear the interview at danpatrick.com.
Thomas' comments come a day after coach Hue Jackson said that, when it comes to the draft, a good quarterback is more valuable than an elite non-QB.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
gotta love all the smokescreens this year at this point though Joe is ready to be our next GM. He always seems to make more sense anyways =)
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.
At this point in time, frankly, there is zero reason to have any confidence in Hue or the FO to get the QB question right. Zero.
especially when they say dumb crap like a good qb is better than an exceptional non QB...thats just the dumbest thing i've ever heard
Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday. -John Wayne

I have this queasy feeling they're stumbling in the dark to find their rumps with both hands and a flashlight with zero success.
I have a feeling if they screw up this draft the FO will all be replaced next year...no way we can keep letting them squander all these picks..we need at least 3-4 impact players out of this draft.

I'm thinkin' the same thing. If they pick a QB with our first pick, there will be a lot of upset Browns fans.
Well Joe Thomas is correct the risk is greater cause of the difficulty to evaluate QBs. But if Hue is 99.9% sure it probably will happen. I am not sure of Garrett that is me I have to see more of him which I have not.
oh and I just heard an interview where the REPORTER. Said, They say a good QB is more valuable than an elite non-QB. Hue didn't agree nor did he disagree but I thin people are putting that quote on HUE unless he said it and forgot that he did cause in this interview he sure didn't act like that was his quote.
Can someone explain to me why exactly Garrett is the #1 pick?
I mean....I'm looking st his sack totals and such and....I rather choose Allen.
Is he the #1 pick because the media is saying he is?
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
He is going to have to show Freakish specs at the combine. He can't be just OK/GOOD...he's got to be special that doesn't come along. jmho Can the media be over rating him???
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

The SEC's leader in sacks (12.5), tackles for loss (19.5) and forced fumbles (five) despite seeing an array of double teams, Garrett has more than lived up to his enormous recruiting hype. Listed at 6-5, 262, Garrett’s got the chiseled physique of a DB — a huge DB. The junior has off-the-charts workout numbers. He told me this month he power cleans 440 pounds and bench-presses 485 — staggering when you consider he also has a 40-inch vertical and his fastest 40 time at A&M, he said, is 4.45. “If I could dip into the 4.3s, that’d be great,” he told FOX Sports. It’s also been insane to see someone that big moving that fast. Garrett’s diet is pretty tight. “I just try to stay away from soda and try to stay away from candy and sweets,” he said, adding that he thinks he can bulk up to 270. Scary thought: Garrett doesn’t turn 21 until December.

that's what i'm wondering. i mean, he's gotta put up Clowney type combine numbers, right?

Myles had a better and more consistent career than Clowney.
Garrett is so special because he might be the fastest big man alive atm. Sure there are lots of fast skinny dudes. This guy has elite speed in the body of a monster. He is so fast that at times he is past the LT before the LT is even fully standing up. Knowing this team double and triple team him but he still gets to the QB.
Think of this ... IF Garrett does nothing but eat up 2-3 blockers then we have 10 plays vs their 8. Danny Shelton often takes up 2 blockers to stop him. Now it's 9 guys vs 6. That means you are going to have 1 on 1 blocking for the other two D-line. The QB ain't the blocker so it's now 7 vs 3. Who is then left to block collins or nate orchard who was a sack monster in college. So they are going to try and score points with just one receiving threat against 5 remaining DBs? This is why a guy like Garrett is so special. It doesn't matter if he gets a sack because he causes so much disruption that offenses get crippled to stop him.
Now just imagine if we also find another DT that is as good as Danny Shelton ... it becomes impossible to block everyone. or imagine that derek Barnet or solomon thomas slips to 12 by some miracle ... It's just sick.

Garret had a knee injury early on this past season that he played through. He has incredible burst off the line, and bends like he's made out of rubber. He has good instincts, and takes good angles in the run game. He tackles extremely well in run defense, and chases down plays away from him well. He has a very strong lower body, and he generates incredible power and speed immediately at the snap. Physically, he could play either, or both, OLB or DE in Williams's defense.
On the down side, especially in Williams's defense is that he has never been a strong student of the game. That is something he is really going to have to work on as a pro. He can't just show up and dominate.
Just my $.02

Peen, I think people are just talking themselves out of it because that's what people do. Unless it's Andrew Luck, people will over analyze the hell out of any guy in the draft.

Myles had a better and more consistent career than Clowney.
95% of his hype came from one hit against Michigan when he wasn't even blocked.
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
"I would say you want to go defense. I think you need to get a pass rusher," said Thomas. "I think you've got to be careful reaching for a quarterback at No. 1 because if they fail, they don't help your team at all.
Sometimes, I think Joe and I are brothers from another mother.
The QBs in this draft are scary. Last year, I thought the top qbs were risky and didn't think any warranted a top five pick. I was probably wrong about Wentz. He is much better than I thought.
This year's QBs are even more risky than last year's. A few of them could be decent, but man, they all have big-time bust potential.
Myles Garrett is a freak of nature. He is one of the best athletes to ever put on a football uniform. He is long. He has a great physique. He is a very solid kid w/good morals. He is so good that teams scheme around him.
I should not be surprised given the history of opinions on this board, but man, I can't believe that an elite prospect at the second most important position on the field is staring us in the face and people are saying we shouldn't draft him.
Vers, something you said can't be stated enough. Pass rusher is the 2nd most important position in football. You need to throw and stop the guy throwing. It's why left tackles are so highly valued.
I see elite talent at that position. I don't see elite talent at QB.
all i know is if they are stupid enough to take an average QB (and all of them are average at best) just to take a QB and pass on a generational player they should lose their jobs

Wasn't he also the #1 high school recruit and a ridiculous athlete?
I am not the biggest proponent of Garrett. I know what he is and boy is it rare and would be great to have but he isn't perfect. I haven't seen the fighting instinct I like in my edges that make them great technicians and ferocious finishers. It's one of those things that can't be taught. It's reactionary like a qb reading a d. It's the killer instinct. Doesn't mean he doesn't have it but in my hours and hours of watching him it doesn't seem that way. Also doesn't mean he can't be a probowler without it. He definitely can. And no that is not connected to the people who say he has a cold motor. That is not a concern to me. I say this for those who aren't as well versed in him as I am.
Now to put this in terms the less intense scouts of us will understand. Myles Garrett is the LeBron James of the nfl. Not LeBron now but pre draft lebron. Myles is the closest to a perfect prospect I've ever seen at his position. And yes that includes luck.
His build is perfect. His burst is perfect. His speed to power is perfect. His character is perfect. His work ethic is perfect. If you could build a person to play edge for you it would be myles head to toe. No one has ever compared. Not even the freak whom people like to compare. Some players have one or two of these attributes. I've never seen this many in one player. And then he's productive too?
Now because he's close to perfect doesn't mean he is. His run defense improved greatly this year to near top at his position he needs to continue that. His hand work is raw and his biggest concern imo though most out of college are. Barnett is a freak in his own right in that regard. Most polished rusher I've ever studied.
Simple fact is the nfl has never seen a defensive prospect this close to not just perfect but insane. Before myles I didn't even think someone as large as him would EVER move like that. And he plays the 2nd most important position. He may have flaws but when he is on there isn't a single player in the nfl EVER that could go from RE to the qb faster. Think about that. Ever. And he's not just a good kid but a transcendent human being. He inspires people with his character.
Another comparison. I'm sure you all remember Calvin johnson? Freakiest athlete I'd ever seen. 6'5 235 4.35 40. Agile. Powerful. Quiet lunch pail type. Myles isn't unlike him (different positions of course). Except myles is primed to pull the same combine numbers at 265 that Calvin had at 235. Can you imagine Calvin johnson being a pass rusher but with 30 extra lbs? Myles is insane.
People are more than welcome to have their opinions on passing on him or trading down, taking a qb etc. But do it while knowing what I've now said. A lot of people don't seem to understand what he is so I hope this helps.
The biggest thing you said was that he produced. He consistently produced. He wasn't a career underachiever and he wasn't a 1 year wonder. He balled out his entire career even as a freshmen.

Just remember Pro LTs are different than college LTs. I don't think Garrett good as he is will tie up 3 Pro linemen.
One thing that will be a big help to Garrett is he will be going against Joe Thomas in practice. He could do some serious damage against lesser LTs in real games.
