Same source I posted before:

Quote:
Browns personnel staff secretary and assistant said that the entire coaching and scouting dept. convenes after the senior bowl for a meeting headed by Depodesta to discuss how to avoid putting too much weight in familiarity and direct observation at the senior bowl as to not unduly bias evaluations toward senior bowl prospects over others. This year that meeting will be more extensive.

Jamal Adams is a consensus top 4 prospect

People think Jonathan Allen will fall in the draft b/c people are going to reach for traditional skill positions in the top 10 and many don't see his impact in the 43 as much as has been speculated.

If Allen slips to 9, I'm trading up for him. It would cost us our 1st and 2 4th round picks.

I would not trade up for anyone.

Oh, and btw...............my top qb is at #16 right now and I consider that a bit of a stretch.

All I am saying is that we have had FOs make a lot of mistakes because they were too lazy to do their due diligence. What we decide to do throughout the draft is built off that #1 overall pick. If Garrett is supposed to be the best player, he is the one you start with and do the most work on. You don't wait until last minute to finish your evaluation on him. Because if you find something that raises an eyebrow then you need time to investigate it. And if that raised eyebrow turns into something real, then you have to re-work your whole draft strategy.

It's one thing to not trade down but to think this front office would trade up is probably a waste of your time. The numbers just don't add up

They should have the heavy lifting all but finished by now. No?

What numbers?

The numbers that don't add up are the ones saying we're going to bring another 15 rookies in. Or however many picks we have.

How many do we have?

I have 3 guaranteed opinions on this draft.

1) The Browns will NOT go QB at #1
2) Malik McDowell will NOT go Top 5
3) We will move UP at least TWICE in this draft

I think they'll rollover some picks to next year - swap 5th for future 4th etc. Analytics values future picks more highly than the traditional system I believe. If we also pick up a few FAs, that makes compressing the roster more difficult. However I think when you have lots of picks you don't expect all to stick. Cuts will be interesting next season.

I think he is talking about analytics. Isn't the idea to accumulate more draft picks rather than trading them away?

The idea of analytics is to optimize each pick's value. Often that is by trading down. Many times it is drafting where you are slotted and yes, occasionally it will involve trading up.

I don't know if they will trade up or not. I think at this stage of the process it is more likely that they trade down this year and accumulate more picks for next year. But I don't think analytics will preclude a trade up.

Drobs. I don't do these drafts.

Try this. I'm curious if it hits 12000 points.

Move to 5 and take Barnett. Get 18.
Move up to say 7 and snag Adams or Hooker
Take the Best Available CB at 18.

I didn't reach for Kizer he was the best player on the board (thus the A grade). If Kizer or Watson were available at the top of the 2nd round that isn't a reach. You might not like the pick (I wouldn't depending on who was available), but I certainly wouldn't call it a reach.

When I'm messing around with this game, If I take a QB that isn't Mahones in the 3rd or 4th, it's because in my own mind I've traded to the Pats for Garropolo so I burn the pick on Kizer if he's there at 33 or so. We need a QB - I'm still hanging on to my pipe dream it's Kessler but you always need Plans B and C laugh

Sorry, I don't think Kessler is it. You can't fix arm strength.

He is a good guy to have on the team. He will probably carve out a nice NFL career, playing for about as long as he wants to play.

He is a decent game manager and isn't going to lose many games doing stupid stuff. A perfect back-up. Much like Josh who has carved out a nice NFL career.

That's simply not true. You can definately improve arm strength. footwork, throwing technique, and certain exercises can definately improve how the ball is thrown. You won't fix it overnight but it can definately be improved.

You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

Not really. You might improve by fractions. It's not like these guys haven't been coached before. They have been going to camps since they were 15 years old. High school coaching, college coaching. At some point, it is what it is.

I agree. These guys have been coached. They have great training programs. A few things can and will be tweaked, but the improvement of arm strength is going to be minimal.

Look at MLB pitchers. Why do we have pitchers who top out in the 100s and others who top out in the 80s if improving arm strength was so easy to do?

actually it can. Tom House is making a living on it.

Kessler show different arm strength before and after the House camp.

Just like speed. You can make anyone faster...of course no you cannot take a guy from 4.6 to 4.2. But you can take a 4.6 guy and make him possibly a 4.48 or a 4.52

Kessler is middle of the road at best on Arm strength - this is true. can it translate to success that all depends on how fast his reads become and his release. We'll see in time. But if we can develop a kid with a better arm and the same aptitude to the game...All the Better. I'd like Webb as a mid rounder.

jmho

I agree w/peen.

Once players reach this level, the arm strength they can gain is minimal.

This theory is simply not true. Not only is it not true, it is totally a completely false.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-most-startling-trend-in-baseball/

Quote:
What ought to be examined more is where these hard throwers are coming from. Some people have long been aware that average velocities are on the rise, but few have paused to consider how startling that is, given how quickly this has happened. I’ll repeat: there are three times as many hard throwers now as there were just six or seven years ago. Trends in baseball don’t happen that fast, and it’s not like teams are more selective for pitchers who throw hard. People in the game have always valued heat, probably too much. Hard throwers have always gotten priority. Now there are a lot more of them, on just about every staff.

Part of the explanation, I imagine, has to do with improvements in weight training and workout regimens, all the way down to high school and below. Maybe there’s greater understanding now of pitching mechanics. And an element is probably improvements in keeping professional pitchers healthy. It could be that hard throwers were always present in great numbers, but they used to get hurt more. At least, that could be a part of it. Never bet against progress when you’re dealing with such a profitable industry.
