Yes, that John Lynch.

This came out of nowhere. They gave him a six year deal.

No prior experience running a front office or working for an NFL team (other than as a player). This is a little weird. If this was our team I think people would probably be freaking out (especially with the questionable decisions the 49ers have made recently).

unexpected move

WHY? Why would they do that?

This smells like Shanahan's version of George Kokinis..... except with less experience. Good luck.

I'm guessing Shanahan played a part in the hire.

With Mark Dominik likely headed to San Fran to be John Lynch's right hand, look for Jimmy Garoppolo to be in play there.

I'm curious why this is not the other way around...Lynch being the right hand man to Dominik. I'm interested to see how this plays out.

Lynch was announcing a recent Falcon game, might have been the playoff game against Seattle, and during that game he was talking about Shanny. He said he might come off a little arrogant in interviews, but he said so what, if it was me, I would hire him in a second. He went on to praise Shanny.

That makes me wonder if the w/Lynch and the 49ers might have been a reality for awhile.

LOL the list of failures for the Browns is historically bad over the past 15 years. Good grief that is depressing.

I'm not sure if Shanahan would have his prototypical go-to receiver, though. That is a decent start to build around.

It will be interesting to see what they do on the defensive side of the ball as well.

I'm going to laugh when Horton ends up there.

Personally I disagree with this. I think Joe Banner did well in his time here.

He started the process we are going through now, I just wish we would have stuck with him.

I think (IN MY OPINION) had he not hired Lombardi, he would of been fine.

Also I think keeping Chud would of been the best for everyone, instead of hoping they could get Chip Kelly.

Man, if I had known they were willing to hire someone with zero experience, I would have tossed them my resume.

- IT degree
- 20 years in the IT industry
- I used to play a lot of Madden and NCAA on the PS3
- I watch football
- I've been to San Francisco

I might have only got a 4 year deal though.

He also wanted the Co-Ordinators to report to him, bypassing the coach. How smart was that? It seems nobody wants to bring that up though. He might still be here if he wasn't so power hungry.
Plus I think he talked Haslam into getting rid of Chud, which I think Haslam finally decided was a mistake, but to late.

Funny I didn't remember him wanting to have the coordinators to report to him.... wow

Ousted Cleveland CEO Joe Banner -- who is transitioning out of his role in Cleveland after being not asked back along with GM Mike Lombardi -- had the new offensive and defensive coordinators reporting directly to him, CBS Sports NFL Insider Pat Kirwan reports.

Kirwan spoke to a league source at the NFL combine in Indianapolis who told him Banner was a bit of a control freak and structured the coaching staff so that the new coordinators would answer directly to him.

That's atypical of an NFL team, to say the least. Generally speaking coordinators answer directly to the head coach, in this case recently hired Mike Pettine.

Pettine was hired after the Browns fired Rob Chudzinski following just one year at the helm. Chud has since latched on with the Colts as a special assistant to the head coach.

To say that the power structure in Cleveland was different would be an understatement. New GM Ray Farmer, who was at the time assistant GM, was not involved in the head coaching search either, Kirwan was told.

Having coordinators circumvent the head coach and GM by reporting to the CEO of the team is just out there. As Kirwan wonders, it's entirely possible that Banner wanted to control what players played and when.

Banner DID trade TRich right out from under his nose.

Clearly trading TRich was a good move, but I wouldn't say blind siding your HC like that falls under professional courtesy

That was the best move Banner ever made.. Of course when he did it, I was thinking, what an idiot, but it did turn out to be a smart move.

Good for Lynch always liked him as a football player. Glad to see he does not have long term after affects from his multiple concussions!

Probably no more a long shot then anybody else. There are already others in place to help run the business end...the forgottn part of being a GM. As for player selection, his guess is can be as good as anybody.

I think far too often teams, GMs, try to get too cute with their selections. It isn't all that hard to get good players in the first 3 rounds. You should be able to hit on two of those picks. If you can then find another player in the rest of the rounds, even every other year, you are going to keep your team stocked and should make progress.

I think the big problem is they "fall in love" with a guy and end up making stupid selections by reaching. Butch was a good example of that. So was Marty.

The good ones let the draft come to them. Bellicheck is a good example of that. The Pats have been drafting at the bottom of rounds for 15 years, yet they somehow end up drafting 2-3 guys a year who end up helping the team.

2-3 guys a year. That is all you need to make progress.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
