I'm all for Hodges in the 3rd

Listened to Phil Savage on Late Hits last night (2/16). He talked a lot about the Browns and specifically our 1st pick in the draft. He gave a lot of opinion about MG then Allen and did some compare and contrast between the 2.

Definitely worth a listen if you have siriusxm and can re-stream it. I turned the radio on between 7:10 and 7:15 and he was already talking Browns. Just to give you a time window to shoot for so you don't have to start from the beginning.

Hard to say. I don't want to try to quote him too much from memory so I encourage anyone who can to listen. Bu my take away was this (and I missed the very 1st part about MG):

MG - Makes some great plays but often disappears.
Reminds him of a young Julius Peppers
Got credit for playing injured all season

Allen - Much more consistent "You know what yo are going to get"

MG - outside pressure, Allen inside pressure and can do more to help stop the run game which "Cleveland has been trying to do since I was there and still haven't found a way" Stopping the run game is important because ... don't remember the reasoning but I think we all have a good idea. But MG would be a bigger influence vs the passing game.

Allen had better stats but MG had less support around him and it is easier for a DT to make tackles in the run game than a DE.

Bottom line - He likes both a lot, Choice would depend on what the Browns preference was - inside vs outside pressure. I seemed to hear a little 'bama bias because he does their games. When it came down to it, my impression was that he would lean toward MG but felt that he had more risk than Allen.

He also noted that there could be some thought that coming from the coaching at Alabama Allen was fully developed and may have reached his ceiling, whereas MG has a lot of room for growth.

Disclaimer: These are my memories from last night's show and I tried to be clear what I heard, what I am quoting, and what are my impressions. But again this is by memory so forgive any errors and if anyone does listen to Late Hits please come back and confirm or correct this post.

Thank you!!!
I completely agree with what Savage was saying. The Browns can't miss on this pick and Allen is the safer of the two without sacrificing production IMO. What he lacks in explosive pass rush ability he MORE then makes up for in the run game and higher motor. Much more versatility also, line him up anywhere.

If Browns do not draft a QB in the first, which I personally don't think they will, two QBs I think Cleveland pursues Chad Kelly and Davis Webb.

They draft Webb late second or third. Kelly they get as an un-drafted free agent.

We all seen how Kessler did this year. Think what might happen getting a kid who meets more physical standards.

Did getting Prescott mid round restart a trend getting a QB outside the first round isn't a crazy idea?

This is a draft to get us deep in the playoffs for the next decade. It started off with a trade back and then a trade back up to get allen. The goal of this draft was to build an elite defensive line and a much improved O-line. I lucked out and got a really good TE and WR. King is more of a FS to be and with justin evans at SS we could have a much improved secondary. If King is used as a nickel CB he could be good there too. I can see us netting 11 starters from a draft like this and a lot of quality depth too.

I like how we don't draft anyone with any of our original picks.

HEHE thanks! I traded down and picked up a future first. Then I waited to see who they took. Garrett went first and then Trub. so I started to try for a trade using future first and pick 1 in the second round plus the garbage 5th and 6th round picks until I got Allen. Then I picked solomon from the trade down from first pick. My main goal was then accomplished. I was going to take Barnett at 12 but I got an offer to trade back I couldn't refuse twice in a row. I ended up getting Barnett anyways. So sweet ultimate D-line is formed =)

Next I am thinking what can I do for the O-line since some good names were still on board but TE was the BPA so I took him first then went hardcore for O-line. I picked up Brad for QB depth and because he was the highest rated round player.

Each time I traded back my rule was to stay with in 3 spots and pick up a player in the next round. It would never work in real life but I can dream. It all started with the extra value picked up by not taking Garrett. I would honestly take Allen and Soloman over just Garrett any day of the week and be completely thrilled.

Just think of a D-line of Soloman DE, Danny DT, Allen DT, Barnett DE and ogbah on the loose somewhere. Man that is just crazy good. I mean that is so good its like instant top 10 defense as rookies and top 3 after a year or two.

Then in the 2018 draft we would be set to focus on CB and LT to eventually replace Joe. We might even be able to focus on a QB if needed.

Did a draft with original picks and based on if I thought they'd be there or not. That forced me into playing the points game in some cases, despite me saying I wouldn't do that. Mahomes and Taylor/Zay Jones were the picks, but I'd probably change one of them to a 3T. But I can't complain with this team. I think it'd be pretty good. But I did "draft" them.

Every time I get a chance to drop back in the top seven for a first next year, I take it. I dropped back twice and still got Thomas & Lattimore, with Kizer in the second. I wanted to solidify the D, get some help on the O-line, and add a couple weapons to take the pressure off the QB.

(I'm not sure where to put this, in the Draft thread or under Garoppolo. I'm putting it here for now. Mod, if you think it should go under Garoppolo, please move it for me.)

This mock draft showed up in my daily Fansided email. It has the Browns drafting MG at #1. But it also has a number of trades. Jets draft Trubiski at #3 after trading #6 and Sheldon Richardson to the Bears. Then the Patriots draft Foster at #6 after trading #12, a 2nd, and a 3rd to the Bears. The Bears finally draft Adams at #12. The Browns traded the #12 for Garoppolo, although it doesn't indicate the details of that trade.

Here's a crazy one. check out the overall score compared to the individual grades. (Highest personal score.) The last four picks have seriously dropped in grading, all used to be As or A+s in the late rounds. Mahomes isn't pulling an A grade until round 3, but he's rarely there anymore, and I'm seeing Kizer come off the board before Watson most of the time now. Weird.

Your score is: 13581 (GRADE: A+)

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 8 (CAR): Malik Hooker, FS/SS, Ohio State (A)
Round 1 Pick 12: Jamal Adams, SS, LSU (A+)
Round 2 Pick 1: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech (C+)
Round 2 Pick 8 (CAR): Carl Lawson, DE/OLB, Auburn (A-)
Round 2 Pick 20: Pat Elflein, C/OG, Ohio State (B+)
Round 3 Pick 1: Adoree' Jackson, CB, Southern California (A-)
Round 4 Pick 1: Erik Magnuson, OT, Michigan (B+)
Round 4 Pick 36 (COMP): Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 5 Pick 1: Nazair Jones, DT, North Carolina (B)
Round 5 Pick 31: Carlos Henderson, WR, Louisiana Tech (A)
Round 5 Pick 34 (COMP): Josh Malone, WR, Tennessee (B)
Round 6 Pick 1: Keionta Davis, DE, Chattanooga (C)

Your Future Picks:
2018 Round 1 Pick (CAR)
2018 Round 1 Pick
2019 Round 1 Pick

The scores have been inflated for some reason. A great score use to be 10K+, but now you can easily get 13K.

I drafted Myles at #1 and got an A for the individual pick. I couldn't believe it. I just exited the tab. Since I'm on this point, I really do enjoy the concept of these mock drafts, but I can never just stop thinking about my score. The scoring just kind of ruins it for me.
