Garrett is so special because he might be the fastest big man alive atm. Sure there are lots of fast skinny dudes. This guy has elite speed in the body of a monster. He is so fast that at times he is past the LT before the LT is even fully standing up. Knowing this team double and triple team him but he still gets to the QB.
Think of this ... IF Garrett does nothing but eat up 2-3 blockers then we have 10 plays vs their 8. Danny Shelton often takes up 2 blockers to stop him. Now it's 9 guys vs 6. That means you are going to have 1 on 1 blocking for the other two D-line. The QB ain't the blocker so it's now 7 vs 3. Who is then left to block collins or nate orchard who was a sack monster in college. So they are going to try and score points with just one receiving threat against 5 remaining DBs? This is why a guy like Garrett is so special. It doesn't matter if he gets a sack because he causes so much disruption that offenses get crippled to stop him.
Now just imagine if we also find another DT that is as good as Danny Shelton ... it becomes impossible to block everyone. or imagine that derek Barnet or solomon thomas slips to 12 by some miracle ... It's just sick. Just remember Pro LTs are different than college LTs. I don't think Garrett good as he is will tie up 3 Pro linemen. One thing that will be a big help to Garrett is he will be going against Joe Thomas in practice. He could do some serious damage against lesser LTs in real games. Well he won't get tripled teamed often but chances are he will get at least double teamed and be a prime source of the QB's focus for sure =)

Being the QB the most important position in the team, I never understood how taking the best QB in a class can be labled has a reach...
If we re-do the drafts, most of them would have a QB has the #1 pick.

I am not the biggest proponent of Garrett. I know what he is and boy is it rare and would be great to have but he isn't perfect. I haven't seen the fighting instinct I like in my edges that make them great technicians and ferocious finishers. It's one of those things that can't be taught. It's reactionary like a qb reading a d. It's the killer instinct. Doesn't mean he doesn't have it but in my hours and hours of watching him it doesn't seem that way. Also doesn't mean he can't be a probowler without it. He definitely can. And no that is not connected to the people who say he has a cold motor. That is not a concern to me. I say this for those who aren't as well versed in him as I am.
Now to put this in terms the less intense scouts of us will understand. Myles Garrett is the LeBron James of the nfl. Not LeBron now but pre draft lebron. Myles is the closest to a perfect prospect I've ever seen at his position. And yes that includes luck.
His build is perfect. His burst is perfect. His speed to power is perfect. His character is perfect. His work ethic is perfect. If you could build a person to play edge for you it would be myles head to toe. No one has ever compared. Not even the freak whom people like to compare. Some players have one or two of these attributes. I've never seen this many in one player. And then he's productive too?
Now because he's close to perfect doesn't mean he is. His run defense improved greatly this year to near top at his position he needs to continue that. His hand work is raw and his biggest concern imo though most out of college are. Barnett is a freak in his own right in that regard. Most polished rusher I've ever studied.
Simple fact is the nfl has never seen a defensive prospect this close to not just perfect but insane. Before myles I didn't even think someone as large as him would EVER move like that. And he plays the 2nd most important position. He may have flaws but when he is on there isn't a single player in the nfl EVER that could go from RE to the qb faster. Think about that. Ever. And he's not just a good kid but a transcendent human being. He inspires people with his character.
Another comparison. I'm sure you all remember Calvin johnson? Freakiest athlete I'd ever seen. 6'5 235 4.35 40. Agile. Powerful. Quiet lunch pail type. Myles isn't unlike him (different positions of course). Except myles is primed to pull the same combine numbers at 265 that Calvin had at 235. Can you imagine Calvin johnson being a pass rusher but with 30 extra lbs? Myles is insane.
People are more than welcome to have their opinions on passing on him or trading down, taking a qb etc. But do it while knowing what I've now said. A lot of people don't seem to understand what he is so I hope this helps. Awesome post!

Well I saw the video and incredible stats he had as an 18 year old freshman. I don't know this kid from Adam which is why I have asked questions.
Did he progress from his freshman year? Did he get that much better?
In my mock I did pick him cause Edge Rusher Elite is key...I do have LT on my top list #2 in value but of course it helps to have a QB and they negate that Elite edge rusher.
But we have not had one...I think in 2001 we had made good use of Rushing the SAM LB on the same side of McKinney the DE in our 4-3 to get the most sacks from a player on the Browns. But have never came close to that as a Pass Rusher. jmho

If this guy is even 80% of all of that, you do NOT pass on him. This is a case of BPA meeting Need at the very top of the draft. You have the best player in the draft AND he fills a glaring Need AND it is at one of the most important positions on the team..... it's a No-Brainer.

Interesting take from predator.
Good to see he has done his homework on the guy.
Most of what I have read(not seen) seems to go along those lines.
If he is all that then I go back to to my original choice.
Get Garoppolo and take Garrett.
The Browns have to address the quarterback position. Secondly they need impact players. Elite pass rushers are golden.
The Calvin Johnson comparison sold me. I lived in Atl. when Calvin was at Ga. Tech. He was something else.
All the recent quotes coming from Hue basically spell out he is going to get a quarterback. It doesn't sound like he is talking about a third rounder.
So, if the Browns take Garrett at one. And if the Browns really want one of the top three; they will most likely have to move up from 12 to get "their guy".
Trading up from 12 to two would be very costly. It would also be very risky considering that the top three QB's are considered to be a reach.
Considering all those factors logic points to making the trade for Garoppolo.
Which of course means it will never happen.

Right, can't expect the Browns to do the right thing. I don't even want Watson or Trub in the 1st round and Kizer not at all. Go D and acquire Jimmy G

Thanks guy I tried to lay it all out there. I'd be 100% on the myles train if it wasn't for Barnett. If you haven't done your homework on him I would highly suggest it. They're very different but I have Barnett as my 2nd highest grade for edge since von. It's just a great position for us.

Agrred. And he can be a huge game changer, just in adjustments he might force. Real pressure has won SBs; ask Denver for starters. This guy, even if hyped, is who we need or what we need. Don't make it tougher. I want him at #1.

I see a greater chance of him busting than Garrett. .he lacks the one thing you need at the NFL level DE spot and thats explosion, which Garrett has in spades. He's got good strength and usually takes a direct path to QB, but he's not someone I'd pick over Garrett. He's going to have to have a hellevua combine and I think he will and move up boards due to his strength which is impressive, but I take Garrett first pick, unless we can move down and get Derek around 12ish.. question then do you make Garrett a LB and keep Barnett opposite Ogbah as DE's

I hope it never comes to that, because the anticipation waiting for the 12th selection might be to great for this old timer to bare.

I don't think Barnetts quick twitch is anywhere near as bad as you seem to think it is. It makes quite the difference that he's coming out in the same year as the best athlete to ever rush the passer. But boy can that guy fight. His hands and technique are unlike any I've seen at the college level. He may not have the ceiling of Garrett but he's the better player day 1 imo.

I'd like Both Garrett and Barnett. How much better do you think our current corners would become if we had both of those guys clobbering the QB play after play?
After one quarter you'd have QB's going to the sideline telling their coach they don't want to play anymore.

After one quarter you'd have QB's going to the sideline telling their coach they don't want to play anymore. I don't disagree with adding talent but I think Ogbah opposite Garrett would be more than fine. I could see wanting more of a pure pass rusher on obvious passing downs. If we want a genuinely different option as a pass rushing threat we should perhaps be looking at Takk McKinley (UCLA) or even Reddick (Temple). I think McKinley is more of a 3-4 OLB but man is he explosive. Reddick played with his hand down at Temple as well as at 'backer. STRENGTHS: Twitched-up athlete with the burst off the ball to blow past offensive tackles as a speed rusher, as well as the disproportionately long arms to keep blockers from grabbing hold of him. Terrific balance and bend to dip under the reach of blockers and scrape the corner. Fluid change of direction, allowing him to project nicely as an edge rusher, spy on the quarterback or when dropping into coverage. Anticipates cut blocks and pulling guards, showing excellent body control to spin free from contact while keeping track of the ball. Good vision and motor for pursuit, often running 15+ yards downfield to get in on tackles even after initially rushing upfield. Active hands to slip blocks even when his initial speed rush is contained, incorporating swim and rip moves frequently. Shows good hand-eye coordination to slap away the ball from unsuspecting quarterbacks while still being blocked, as well as the explosiveness and timing to knock down passes at the line of scrimmage. May just be scratching the surface of his athletic potential. Recorded a 10.58 second 100 meters in his first year of running track during high school.
I don't think McKinley can be an every down 4-3 DE but he could be a difference maker in a passing league and I'd take him at 33 in a heartbeat. I think he goes in the first to a 3-4 team. My late round favourite is Trey Hendrickson out of Florida Atlantic. Passing downs: Ogbah, Garret, McKinley, Collins / Reddick / Kirksey. Seek and destroy. EDIT: Charles Harris (Missouri) also falls into the pure edge rusher bracket.

I may not have been joking about taking Barnett, but wasn't totally serious either. I think Ogbah made nice strides as the season went on and we started playing him at end and forgot about making him a backer. I also think that Williams will light some fires. I am good with Garrett and Ogbah. I think it could blossom in to a nice 1-2 punch.

I definitely want the Browns to draft Garrett, but I think they really do need to upgrade the secondary. I think multiple investments are needed in that unit.

With Garrett rushing the QB our CBs get much better.Naturaly we still need one more and different safety. If we are smart we can come out of this draft with a respectable D and a QB ( Jimmy G )

Don't get me wrong if we did something stupid and traded down a few picks and missed on Garrett, Barnett would be a nice consolation prize, but I hope we aren't stupid and just draft Garrett From his Draft Profile: WEAKNESSES Admitted slow starter who has had issues with sluggishness to start a season. Will overthink it at times rather than just reacting. Can be undisciplined with guessing snap count and taking penalties. Change-of-direction issues typical of a broad-waisted big man. Struggles to redirect movements suddenly once momentum starts rolling downhill. Quarterbacks with pocket mobility can elude him. Substantially more twitch in hands than in feet. Feet are average. Initial burst upfield is average. Times snap count to help with his get-off. Aggressive forward charge opens him up to cut blocks. Long stride creates base inconsistencies at point of attack. Length is a concern. Can he still win without decisive, early victories with his hands? Loops to quarterback are rounded and might need a winning, inside counter move as a pro.

We have for IMPACT picks. 2 First rounders and 2 Second Rounders. Needs in order with team value in their as well. 1. QB 2. Edge Rusher 3. Safety 4. Corner 5. OL
hopefully we will take care of 4 of these 5.
The other Question I have will Allen as the Quick disruptive DT along with Shelton (not in double) be better for the Pass rush collapsing that under belly? Would a combo of Allen at #1 and Barnett/Thomas at #12 be better for this team?
just thinking out loud! Who would make this team better?

Everybody is on the Garrett wagon. It is understandable. He has great physical tools.
However, in the games I have seen I see inconsistent effort. There is no doubting his talent and maybe he is the number one talent.
But when I watch Solomon Thomas; the determination on this guy is special. He has great hand movement and strength. He plays with leverage. You watch the ball and this guy shows up. He seems to get in on every play.
We have the picks and free agent money to upgrade the talent.
My "major concern" is can this staff pick the talent???

I've shared the "motor" concern somewhat at times, but I also think you have to take into account what the player is asked to do. Some DCs prefer their players to be more disciplined, while others prefer them to fly to the ball. I'm not sure how much Garrett's injury played into what he was asked to do. Here's ane excerpt from an article on A&M's DC: From reading different resources (the ones linked above plus other articles) and watching bits and pieces of LSU film, it stands out that the two things a Chavis defense relies on are aggression and discipline. They will try to play on the offense's side of the line of scrimmage and get to the ball, yet if they are facing a mobile quarterback (like Johnny Manziel), they will remain disciplined and play to contain. He teaches smart football, versatile style, and pure fundamentals. Ideally, focusing on those things will keep players in position and allow them to make the plays that are there, which will limit big plays. True to form, LSU this year was #2 in the nation in allowing the fewest plays of 10+ yards. Link I've seen the Cam Robinson match up pointed out a lot, but I think what gets lost sometimes is the fact that Jalen Hurts is a mobile QB. Did they play more contain than when Alabama had a stationary QB the year before? I want to watch more tape from early in Garrett's career to see how the motor looks in a different scheme/when he didn't know what he was doing as much.

I must admit I'm enamoured with Thomas. I too have thoughts along the lines of Hooker, Thomas and someone like McKinley, Harris or Willis. Thomas and Shelton in the middle would increase the effectiveness of the ends and free up blitzers. I think there more than a handful of defensive studs - its trying to get the best bang for your draft buck.

Im not sold on Garrett. I think taking him #1 overall is a bad idea. at 269 pounds he is too light in the rear end. Joe Thomas will mandhandle him in practice, and he will struggle in this division because of it. He won't be big enough to set an edge in the pros. He has bust written all over him.
Best thing for the Browns to do is move down 2-3 spots and take either Watson, Kizer, or Trubinsky.
We need a QB. Thats it. period...we have no chance at all without one...drafting Garret won't matter when your still 2-14. We need a QB in the worst way. I don't think we will get Jimmy G i think the Pats will want too much for him.
Garret belongs in a 3-4 he reminds me of Wimbley and Mingo...both freaks of nature, both good althletes, but both got manhandled in the pros, and gaining weight takes away their strengths.
of course im sure the Browns will draft Garrett, and he will probably be a bust, and oneof those Qb i mentioned will go on to have greatr careers./
You won't win the in the NFL without a Qb and right now we don't have one.

I am curious to your rationale regarding 269 lbs. Michael Bennett is 274. Jabaal Sheard is best with his hand down. He's 265. I think Jared Allen was listed at 260 or so. Those are just a couple named off the top of my head.

Especially if Shelton can keep making strides on the interior..

You're arguing with KOB.
Rationale is not a word you can just throw around.

JT says not to reach...I agree..lots of mock drafts have NO Qbs going early based on talent...I agree except on Clemson kid- he could be special....safe bet, Allen- played at most professional college team, played against best in practice and on field...is close to sure thing...like going after D backs too....Joe H can't stay healthy for wear and tear, we need help there almost "desperately"....I'd trade down if we got a haul....like Qbs next year more than this year...Go Browns!!!

Bleacher Report: Now that you've studied this class more closely, who is the one guy we in the media are overrating?
Scout: All the quarterbacks. They're terrible. I wouldn't want to put my job on the line for any quarterback in this class. And to think about taking one in the first round? No way. I'm sure someone will do it, but it's mind-blowing. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/26933...k-of-2017-draft

The Cleveland Browns have an opportunity to quickly reverse the fortunes of a downtrodden franchise with a spectacular effort in the 2017 draft. The team has five picks among the first 62 selections in the draft, including two first-rounders (Nos. 1 and 12 overall), which puts them in a position to add a handful of blue-chip talents to the roster. While most of the pre-draft chatter will focus on the quarterback position and why the team should trade away its picks to nab a potential franchise QB1 (Jimmy Garoppolo or another intriguing veteran), I believe the Browns would be wise to focus on the strategy of acquiring "BPAs" (best players available) in each of the first three rounds.
Let me explain ...
When I studied the 2017 Pro Bowl rosters, I discovered that 72.1 percent (62 of 86) of the players were selected within the draft's first three rounds. More specifically, 52.3 percent (45 of 86) of the players on the rosters entered the league as first-round picks, with 20 former top-10 selections. Given how that information validates the thought that the league's top players are mined in the draft's early rounds, the Browns must make sure their grades match the expectations of their top players.
From a grading standpoint, top-10 picks are expected to develop into Pro Bowlers and rank within the top five players at their respective positions early in their careers. First-round players are viewed as impact playmakers/immediate starters with the potential to rank as top-10 players at their positions early in their careers.
Second- and third-round players are expected to be key contributors during their first few seasons before becoming quality starters for the team. With players selected in the fourth through seventh rounds viewed as developmental prospects/special-teams contributors, the Browns would be wise to focus all of their efforts on acquiring a handful of great players instead of putting all of their eggs in the franchise quarterback basket.
Why would I say that?
While a young quarterback like Garoppolo would certainly energize the fan base as a sign of hope, the fourth-year pro has only played in six NFL games with two starts and is far from a sure thing at the position (see Brock Osweiler). He has teased us with his talents in limited action, but are we really sure that he is the next best thing at the position based on what we've seen from other backups in his position? Remember, the Patriots' offense continued to roll with Garoppolo's backup (Jacoby Brissett) in the game.
That's why I believe the Browns would be better served to build up the rest of the team with potential Pro Bowl players than trading for an unknown commodity at quarterback. Yes, I know there aren't any sure things in the draft, but this draft is loaded with promising young players and a solid scouting staff should be able to find some blue chippers in the opening rounds.
Of course, this is easier said than done and Browns fans are certainly witnesses to the flip side to that equation. But the best way to reboot the program is to take a homegrown approach (draft and develop) and allow the nucleus to grow together. If the Browns can make the right selections on draft day, there's no reason why the Dawg Pound can't rock again with a core of future Pro Bowlers leading the way. -- Bucky Brooks http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...r-browns-titans

That was the one part of the blurb I did not agree with. Brissett was basically asked not to screw things up. Garoppolo ran an offense. Even with that egregious error, the rest of the text is discussion worthy.
