I've never been into hard liquor, but just curious what are some good quality liquors of choice?

Not sure where this came from, guess I've watched too much Boston Legal where Denny and Alan sit on their high rise porch drinking some quality liquor. I wouldn't mind a drink or two after some days of work, but don't want to buy junk.

Give me some ideas... cost not a big deal, I'd much prefer a quality drink over cheapness.

Navan cognac is a very smooth liquor. It's something my wife and I both enjoy. A little fire in the belly with a hint of vanilla... very tastey.

Jack Daniels...best sipping whiskey out there. Gentleman Jack is extra superior.

Makers Mark is a great choice as well.....I prefer it when making Manhattans or Mint Juelips.


Vodka....I like Stoli....as a Martini or with a little tonic.

Gin....I like Beefeater....but Gin isn't my deal.

Tequila....Cueravo Gold....but that is a mix liquor so it doesn't matter much to me.

Rum.....never drink it unless I am on a cruise ship or something and they are handing out Pina Coladas.

Cant go wrong with Jack.

I also like to drink a nice glass of scotch on occasion...not often though; its quite pricey. 15 year Glenlivet is a reasonable combination of quality and price. Johnnie Walker Green label is also pretty good IMO.

As far as other liquors; I enjoy a nice white Russian on occasion, and Baileys Irish Creme is always a tasty choice too.

Those are typically the only liquors I'll drink...I'm more of a beer/wine drinker. Hope this helps ya out.

Crown Royal, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Johnny Walker Black (Whiskey); Captain Morgan Private Stock (Rum); Patron Anejo, Jose Cuervo Especial (Tequilla); and Grey Goose (Vodka) are good quality liquors. All hit the spot just right after a long day at work. Good Luck!

Ausbach Uralt. It's a German Brandy that is so good. Kinda expensive for us po' folks. (around 40-50 bucks for a 1 liter bottle) I drink it and use it to make my brandied yams and my 'special' apple pie.

Bourbon - Maker's Mark
Gin - Bombay
Vodka - Grey Goose
Tequila - Don Eduardo
Rum - Appleton
Cognac - Louis XIII (this stuff's about 75 bucks a shot or 1500 a bottle!).

Lately I've been stuck on Malibu rum - have several flavors.

i love bacardi rum... it's cheap too, are you a member of sams? because you can get a 1.75 liter bottle for under 20 bucks...

for whiskey you can't go wrong with jameson or crown... if you want to go cheaper get some seagrams and do the 7&7, one of the most underappreciated drinks...

i don't drink a ton of tequila, but i've been told that the cabo tequila is awesome, it's top shelf stuff, but it supposedly goes down like nothing, probably pretty dangerous... it's made by sammy hagar's company on his island in mexico

Cabo is a good tequila but I really like the the Cuervo 1800...

And Johnny Walker Blue Label is probably the best scotch I have had. Course I rarely have $120+ to spend on a single bottle of scotch.....

I've seen a lot of liquors are covered, but here's a few more...

Irish Whiskey - Bushmills
Scotch, blended - Pinch, Chivas Regal
Scotch, Single Malt - Glen Livet, or Glen Fiddich
Vodka - Absolut, Finlandia
Bourbon - Jack Daniels
Bonded Bourbon - Old Fitzgerald (Sour Mash), Old Granddad (Bonded means certified to be 100 proof as opposed to 86.8 proof)
101 Bourbon - Wild Turkey
Gin - Beefeater or Tanqueray
Tequilla or Rum... never touch the stuff...

If you're looking for mixed drinks. Use bottom shelf. Most of the good stuff you never mix with anything... except for Jack, and of course Gin. Jack is good with Coke, as well as being a great sipping whiskey... I like to keep Absolut or Finlandia in a freezer... and drink shots with an apple or apple juice chaser. I hardly ever drink Gin.

Single malt scotch is my sipping drink of choice; some of my favorites:
Oban 14 year
Talisker 16 year
Glenmorangie 18 year

I'm normally not a fan of blended scotches, but as someone already mentioned the Johnny Walker Blue is fantastic.

I've also been getting into some sipping tequilas:
El Tesoro Anejo
Patron Anejo

Vodka (for martini's, extra dry with some nice garlic or japalano stuffed olives):
Chopin
Belvedere

There is no such thing as quality liquor, getting "drunk" is only done by weak minded individuals that need to escape reality. I myself have no use for the poison, and pray for those who need to use it and on occasion abuse it.

I try to surround myself with people who don't booze and we have a great time. From the sounds of things many of the posters have some serious drinking issues, so your DTI as you call it doesn't sound very intersesting to me.

No one here is talking about getting drunk or escaping reality....I mean you do understand that you can have a drink , enjoy that drink, and not be drunk off your rocker.....don't you????

You have no use for the poison...fine that is your perogative, I too pray for those who abuse it. I also pray for those that think they are holier than thou, preach as if they were the Almighty God themselves, and act as being beyond reproach or sin.

You might want to check into jobs in the metal fabrication industry, because tha bug up your rear is being crushed into oblivion....they might have a use for you....

Wow...Just because someone enjoys a drink now and then doesnt make them a raging alcoholic.

I might have a drink once a week. Occasionally I'll have a few...for special occasions. Like tomorrow I'm going to a 4th of July party. I'll probably drink 4 or 5 beers over a few hours...have a cigar and talk to some people I haven't seen in a while. I hardly think that makes me self-destructive.

Trust me, I know the type of people you are talking about. My mom is an alcoholic..I've seen what it can do to people...but assuming that everyone who enjoys a drink now and again are alcoholics is assinine.

There's plenty of evidence out there that 1 or 2 drinks every once in a while is good for cardiovascular health. I'm not sayin go out and drink a case of beer or anything, but I enjoy a nice cold one after a hot day in the sun or a nice glass of scotch on the rocks now and again.

I'm pretty sure I'm still a good, functioning person in society.

I'm not much of an expert but I remember liking something called Canadian Crown Royal (or was it Canadian Mist ) I thought it was very smooth.

let's see here, Crown Royal is probably my favorite. It's a Canadian whiskey and very smooth IMO. I like it on the rocks or with a bit of cola. I think Jameson (irish whiskey) is pretty good too, and really goes well with some other drinks (eg. baileys and/or frangelico).

vodka.. to be honest I'm not really a fan of vodka. It's easy to mask vodka's flavor in mixed drinks though so if I'm going to drink it (or serve it to someone over here), that's generally what I'll do. I'd recommend AGAINST grey goose, IMO it's pretty smooth but it tastes awful. It's also pretty expensive. I usually just go with absolut, sometimes absolut citron depending on the drink. It's not top of the line, but I think it's pretty good.

rum.. I think of as similar to vodka in that I don't like the taste straight up but goes well (at least for me) in mixed drinks. Rum also generally absorbs into the bloodstream faster, especially if you mix it with a carbonated drink (eg captain/coke, captain/sprite), the first of which is very popular and the second is actually one of my old favorites. One thing I like doing is putting a shot (or 2 ) of bicardi limon into a corona, tastes like beer with a couple lemons dropped in it. Another thing worth mentioning is bacardi 151... pretty low quality alcohol but VERY strong and pretty cheap. It can be bad news though.

tequila.. shots of patron or patron on the rocks are v. good, especially with a bit of lime. If you're mixing, no reason to use patron, cuervo gold is pretty good. It goes well in general with triple sec (an orange flavored liqueur).

gin... *shudders* ugh, I hate this stuff. I honestly can't recommend anything here. Maybe as I get older I'll start to aquire a taste for it, but I doubt it.

Another thing you need to consider is that you're going to need some stuff to mix with. A good whiskey on the rocks is great, but even that takes a bit of getting used to and it's certainly not for everybody. There are also times you just don't want such a strong flavor.

There's a laundry list of liqueurs out there that you could try, some of the better ones IMO... frangelico (hazelnut), baileys (cream), triple sec (orange), southern comfort (peach/caramel?), etc. Coke, sprite, ginger ale for sure. As far as true mixers go, grenadine, sweet and sour mix, and sweetened lime juice are all v. good.

Tequila - I prefer a chilled Quervo Gold. Goes down smooth as a shot.

But I have also been on a margarita kick since our cruise in May. Jose Quervo makes a premixed margarita with a dash of Grand Marnier. It's really good, just put some ice in a glass and pour it in. No mixing needed.

Never been much for whiskey myself, but when I do get a whiskey drink I prefer Jack. And I tend to like Sky Vodka or Bacardi for some reason.

Belvedere Vodka goes down like water, no burning whatsoever.

If you wanna save money, Svedka is a pretty good cheaper brand, nothing rotten like Kumchatka.

Follow up question - how should I go about finding a few that I like w/o having to purchase a ton of bottles and alerting the police?

Someone suggested to me that I go to Ruth Chris or Hyde Park and spend some time at the bar testing different stuff out. Not a bad idea, although it won't be cheap either... Any other ideas?

Start testing and one day you will be able to give your favorites.

Just a rule on liquor.....if you are going to mix, buy a cheaper brand.

If I am going to sip my whisky...i use jack...straight with 3 ice cubes to cut....sometime a little mineral water.

If i want a bourbon and coke...why use an expensive brand??, I use
Evan Williams...closest flavor to Jack I can find about 1/3 the price.

Same with vodka...if you are going straight or as a Martini , Stoli straight from the freezer...if you are mixing with some sort of soft drink like sprite...I keep a bottle of Popov on hand.

One exception would be a good cocktail....as I mentioned...a Manhattan or Mint Jeulip....I use Makers even though those are sweetened up.

Manhattans are great to serve before dinner..

1 1/2 part Makers(ok...I cheat and make mine a double part)

1 part sweet vermouth....you can add a little more if you want it sweeter.

about a tablespoon cherry juice

dash bitters.....just a dash

Shake in shaker with ice for 20 seconds....serve in a martini glass garnished with a cherry.

If you can legally drink, who cares if the police know you have several bottles of liquor. To keep from buying large bottles of liquor you won't drink, airplane bottles, or half pints. Most half pint bottles cost about what a shot of liquor in a bar would cost, and you will get about 5 shots a bottle.
