Are we sure Greco is going to be ready at the start of the season? Greco himself has said he will be ready. To counter balance, players say a lot of things. It's all we have at this point. I am trusting him, at this time, over what people have to say on here.

If this was a player born in Utah that went to Utah State, with the same credentials as Mangold, we wouldn't even be discussing him. Wanting to sign Mangold is an emotional reaction. As soon as I heard Mangold would be available, I knew that YOU would say the above and most of the rest of what you said. You try and pretend you know things when you don't know any more than most posters. And you sure as hell should not speak for other posters. You state things as fact when instead they are just your opinion, like last year after the first round of the draft and some of us were discussing who to take w/our first pick in the second round. You chided us and said that we shouldn't be discussing it because the Browns would be trading the pick. Now, to the subject: I don't know if the Browns would be interested in Mangold and I don't know if he would sign here. And I won't pretend to know those answers. I can see why the Browns would want him. They have a ton of needs and he would provide a bridge at an important position, especially since the Browns will more than likely be breaking in a new and probably young qb. Having a smart center would help w/that process. I also know that the Browns have a ton of other needs and this could provide a temporary fix. On the negative side, he is an older player and that goes against the plan, so I can see why the Browns might not want to sign him. As far as Mangold goes: He is from Ohio so there might be a connection for him here. I have no idea if that is true or not. Key word is "might." I could also see him not wanting to end his career playing for a crappy team. It's worth conversing about, even though cfrs doesn't want us to.

Would you want Mangold if he was not from Ohio? I'm not sure you recognize how diverse this board is in terms of location and college allegiances. Sure, there's some OSU Fans, but plenty of us aren't. Heck, I still have never even seen a highlight reel of Malik Hooker and couldn't pick that guy out on a football field. Nor that CB from OSU who is so highly rated. But I have watched Nick Mangold on the Jets. I live in the New York Area and the Jets are what we get to watch. If he's healthy, I'd love to have him for a couple years. He's a good teammate and a good player. We have a need. We have a ton of cap room. Why not sign the guy if he is willing to come here? Bringing good players to this team, whether they'll be here or not when we make a playoff run or whatever, does still have it's benefits. Whether it's from a leadership/lockerroom stand point, or just to make our team a little better and not demoralize all this young up-and-coming talent that we supposedly have.

For the record, I am an avid Ohio State hater. I would like to see Mangold sign here because: -He is a proven NFL quality player with multiple Pro Bowl appearances. -He would make a good bridge player simply to let Reiter develop for another year. -He is not the type of contract the front office wants to avoid.
My reasoning: he is not an ageing vet looking for a last contract to ride into the sunset, he would immediately be able to start and contribute, he has never (as far as I know) been a locker room cancer. He is the anti-Dwayne Bowe, in my opinion. If they sign him to a 2 year deal for 8 million per year, it is only 8% of our cap room this year. I think he'd mesh well with Greco and Joe Thomas.
The basic question becomes: is he better than who we have now? If he is, why would you not sign him?

I'd offer to make him the highest paid center in the league for the next 3 years so long as he passes the physical. Ankle injuries can be tricky for big men.
So long as, he is healthy its a flat out no brainier. It fill a HUGE need and GREATLY improves our offensive line in a year where there is not a ton of talent to be had in the draft. If we land a good RT in the draft we could end up having a dallas calibur 0-line real frickin fast.
This is a no brainer to go and sign him asap.

I think it would be a good signing also. He can still play, obviously knows the position and can mentor a young guy we already have or will draft. He will help any QB we have or will get and make the line better. Center has been a revolving door for us the past 2 years. He will stabilize the position.

After giving this a little more thought I think it would probably be a good idea to try Mangold (or a player like him) on the offensive line. Also, I haven't seen anyone mention that we will most likely have a new QB and keeping him protected should be of the highest order. Mangold would help do that.
My first priority in free agency would still be to go after Zeitler, but because Mangold was released we can try to sign him now.
I still view signing Mangold as unlikely because he seems like the type of player who would want to go to a contender and not a rebuilding team.

Not to mention, the Browns have made a conscientious effort to devoid the team of 30+ year old players, for the most part. I believe Joe Thomas is the the oldest player on the team. It's just not the M.O. of this front office to sign a 33 year old free agent.

Watching DT's blow up the middle of our O-Line and cream Cody Kessler is definitely a reason we need to address center. I'd like to make an offer, but nothing unreasonable. Just a fair contract and a chance to come back to Ohio. We def need to address the center need though. I don't think Cameron Erving is the answer. Everytime he looked like he might be turning the corner, I'd be reminded that he wasn't. I don't think Greco at center is the answer though. In fact, I don't really think Greco is the answer at all. I'm just not very high on him like some folks on here are. Don't want to cut him or anything, but IMO he's a backup/average guard

I'm not saying replacing Greco is huge on my list, but I'd like to let Paztor get a chance to fight for that job. Clearly, Center and Right Tackle are the most important positions to fill. I don't think Greco is our answer at center

Greco had a good year last year, whether by PPF grading or any other measurement. However, the year before he had his worst season ever by PPF's grading system. The guy is a good guard. His return from injury (timing and performance wise) is up in the air. He's also be 32 in a month and in the final year of his contract.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Young talent will not develop without somebody to teach them. Those people, who are paid specifically to develop players, are called coaches. There is no reason to expect that we won't either. We may or we may not go after him, but your attitude already shows you have givin up on this team for 2017 so who cares what you think bro. We just won one game. This team is terrible and will be terrible for the foreseeable future. Anyone who thinks we are going to be anything other than terrible in 2017 is not thinking logically. Because we are going to be terrible we should be developing young players instead of signing guys like Nick Mangold. Would you even want Nick Mangold if he was not from Ohio? Sometimes you speak with such Ignorant Confidence...lol
In the OL position the Center is a Middle Stone so to say. He is VERY IMPORTANT in the development of your OL he is what brings together your left part of the OL and the Right part.
His 33 year veteran gives him the ON FIELD COACH possibilities AS IN THE OL CALLS! Reading Blitzes, providing key advise in EXECUTION OF PLAYS during practice.
You are great with stats and articles, I think you are a pretty smart individual. But on the field. Not much in experience. Sorry cfr...for a SNARKY answer you were just so wrong.
Now as for getting Mangold, didn't realize he was 33. That is a shame but we could sign him before the FA opening. He would be a player to have for 2 years and an option at #3.
We do have a NEED at center. Right now our two best answers both are recovering from surgery, Reiter and Greco.
You get your NEEDs first or 2nd tier from FA so that you do not enter the draft with an Urgent Need.
I say its a 50/50 odds we go for him.
As for him not wanting to play here. Well he did go to OSU and many of their Alum want nothing more than see the Browns successful.

I have not read through the thread since posting it, so I apologize if I say something that shows I'm Captain Obvious.
Just a few of the posts above indicate points that I'm thinking about. If Mangold went to OSU, is it possible he is up for the challenge? That he has a positive attitude towards the Browns? What if we offer him the dough and respect? If none of the real contenders pay up, then....
GM is absolutely right. Hey, I love Joe. He's a warrior. But, Joe is a technician, and he's a little quiet. When Mangold was first starting with the Jet he was a mean, nasty, fighter. We could do much worse than putting someone with those qualities in the middle of our Oline. He is right about a coach on the field. No offense against our new Oline coach but we really could use all the help, any possible help, getting some of these young, drafted guys to step up. We need some fire. If we draft a center in the 3rd or 4th, and he patterns himself after Mangold, then it really helps us solve a long term problem.
I'm all for paying our own. Continuity. But, giving Mangold (if he's healthy) a few million above market value would be an expenditure that makes sense from my perspective. A lot of sense. Since some of us want to throw money around, this seems to me to be a decent place to gamble with it.
He's mean, he's nasty, he's not gonna whine about having to play in Cleveland (not that any other centers we have had did, since the first year he played for us). Purple intended.
Mangold's greatest contribution could be his affect on all others on that line.
I have wished we had him for the past 10 years.

As an employee I've sought the advice of a peer before that of a boss, and as a boss, I've asked other employees to help some one 'get' what I'm saying.

Just clicking ...
Center was a huge hole last year. Huge. Signing Mangold to a 2-year deal, or one that allows us to end it in two years with no massive cap hit, allows us to solidify the position for now, so we can concentrate on fixing other spots. We can put off worrying about center for a little while.

Just a question, would you rather have Mangold who is 33 and maybe on the downside of his career, but does bring experience, or say someone like JC Tretter, for example, who doesn't have the experience but is younger at only 26?

WIth Mangold, I'll take the experience. He could be a vital piece on the field, and off with mentoring the younger guys.

I mentioned him in a different thread. I think he could fill several needs for us. He has performed well beyond what we have had post-Mack. I like the idea of his experience making calls. If you are to run effectively, you must have a serviceable or better center. If his signing would help to cut down on sacks, give us depth, improve the blocking calls, and pump up the run game, which all seem reasonable with his past success, at least to some degree, I want him, or someone like him. Injuries, his and Greco's, might make this a good situation for a bad fit. Better protection from up the gut rushes and waggles would help considerably as well. This warrants some serious thought.

Why not both? Bring in Mangold to start and solidfy that spot on the line, and let Tretter be the 6th man who then later fills in behind Mangold in a year or two.

He's the #2 ranked center in free agency, behind Mangold. Someone will give him money to be a starter.

I like Mangold, but I think that there is no way we sign a 33 year old Center. (age is from memory, but if I'm wrong, he's older, anyway)
We are down to 8 players who are 28 or older thus far in this off-season, having already cut players like Tramont Williams, Josh Mc Cown, and with Paea and Colquitt being unrestricted free agents.

I'd LOVE to have him ... don't see how he ends up here though ..

Revis didn't care where he went, as long as the dollar symbols were there.
What teams out there are in need of a center? Anyone know?

Revis didn't care where he went, as long as the dollar symbols were there. Sure didn't. Never has. Always went for the money. And this past year, he sucked. Jets were gonna cut him anyway (whether he got charged for those felonies or not). Mangold isn't like that though. Revis was always talking about his contract, I can't remember Mangold being like that

He'll choose a contender over the be$t offer. I went through the teams and the only thing I came up with is the Seahawks. Even the weak teams seem to have young guys they are either happy with, or who show potential. I started the list below and just gave up. If the boys are willing to show him a respectful offer, and he likes the thought of playing for the Browns, then it definitely could happen. For me, its more than the stability he offers. We need the bite. That line needs fire, unity, and some nasty competitiveness. Our O Line needs to be rebuilt. If Mangold is willing to be another coach on the field, he could possibly be a bargain. If there is a guy in rd. 3 or 4, draft him and use Mangold as some of the ol dawgs have mentioned. IMO that might be money well spent. It makes sense, as long as he is healthy. Contenders: Pats: If we want him, we will offer significantly more dough. I think they are happy where they are at. Broncos: They like their guy. Steelroids: " " Cowboys: Raiders: Chiefs: Giants: Falcons: They apparently have a first ballot HOF'r who never met a passing block he failed to whiff. Texans: Maybe Seahawks: Maybe Packers: Not likely to offer anywhere near the money necessary or that would compete with us, if we want him. Are they gonna let Tretter walk and sign Mangold? ??? Vikings: Are they contenders? Really? I hope he'd rather play for the Browns Colts: " " Redskins: " " The Seahawks are the only "contender" I see that might be willing to come close to the offer we can easily afford to pay if we decide to bring him in. With their salary structure, can they afford him?

Yeah, good post. I was trying hard to think of contenders that maybe the center is one of the crucial pieces needed to take the next step - and Seattle was it.
However, if winning is his goal... then a non-contender like Tampa Bay may be somewhere he'd rather be than here. Or Arizona even. But it wouldn't appear those teams are just a center away from a championship ring.
So if we're interested in him, then I wouldn't, with concrete mindset, rule him out as an option.
...
And yeah, using Revis as a comparison to one's situations was a bit dumb on my part. Bad example on my end.
