Ok. I asked my girlfriend to marry me on Thanksgiving, and she said yes. (with a gun to her head) I was just wondering what was a good place to have our honeymoon. We are leaning towards Antigua, Jamaica, or St. Lucia. We are going to book through Sandals. They are offering 50%, but it ends July 3. So we are going to have decide soon. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I will be honest when i went to Jamaica we had a great time but there seemed to be a lot of riff raff. You have to be very careful of where you go or you can find yourself in trouble. We went through a couple neighborhhods and I thought I was back on the east side of Cleveland. I have no idea about Port St lucie.

Doesn't every country have areas like this? I honestly don't know, as I have never been outside the U.S. Thanks for response.

I dont know Jamaica and Puerto Rico are the only Carribean Islands I have been to. I will also say this.. let me pick my words carefully. When me and my buddy went to Jamaica we were young and didnt only go there for pleasure so we intentionally went into some shady areas of the island where certain crops were being cultivated and processed. Now when we were in the resort areas it was gorgeus and actually the Jamaicans are some great people to be around. Just stay in the touist areas is all I am saying.

I'm sure it's like that just about anywhere - stay where the tourist spots are and you should be fine. A buddy and me went to Puerto Vallarta a little over a year ago and it was beautiful. In certain spots. Venture off the tourist path and it got interesting.
... side note ... for anyone interested ... the strip clubs in Puerto Vallarta are much more 'user friendly'. I know that doesn't help the OP on his honeymoon, but just a little side note.

Congrats!
Outside of the US, I've only been to England, Spain, Italy, and Mexico. I'd recommend Barcelona first, then Tuscany for a honeymoon. Though, since you only mentioned Sandals and Carribean locations - Playa Del Carmen was nice. It is a little more mellow than Cancun, but with all the amenities.

I've been a couple places outside the U.S. St. Martin, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, England, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Vatican City, Greece, Morocco, Monaco (Monte Carlo), Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, United Arab Emerites, Bahrain, Singapore, China, Australia, and Tazmania (Island just SE of and owned by Australia). I think that just about covers it... Anyway, the Islands of St. Thomas and St. Martin, were ok, as stated above, just watch where you are on those islands. But if you are able to go a bit farther here were my favorite three places.... Australia, beautiful country, I was on the west coast of the country, in Perth. Awesome place, highly recommend. I have never been to the east coast, by Sydney and such, but I hear it is even better over there.

Palma de Mallorca, Island of Spain. Great resort area. It is kinda like the "Florida of Europe", everyone goes there for holiday. Great place!

The Sandals property in Jamaica is nice....been there about 15 years ago....it was then at any rate.....but Jamaica sucks.
Antigua is a much nicer island, though I haven't been to the sandals property there.
I would do Antigua. You are bound to leave the property a few times..and when you do Jamaica doesn't offer much but poverty and crime infested areas.

Antigua is very cool. Not a lot to do except relax and have a bit of fun. I agree with USN about Austrailia. I've been to Sydney a few times and I almost didn't come back the last time. If you're set on the Carribean, Martinique is a very pretty island with some very nice private spots. Then there are the Cayman islands. Grand Cayman is a big metropolis (as far as one can get in the Caribbean anyways). Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are stunning. I am counting the days till I can return to Little Cayman.

We originally were wanting to go to Sandals in St. Lucia, but the travel agent suggested Secrets in Punta Cana instead. She said it's just as nice but a cheaper. And we loved it. Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic and the name of the resort is called Secrets Excellence. All-inclusive. Nothing outside the resort, but if you wanted to, they have excursions and trips planned if you want to go, like a safari ride, spped boats and snorkeling, shopping trips, etc. The resort itself is super clean, well run, and beautiful. The pool runs the entire length of the resort, the water is nice, but not super calm if you were on the south side of the island, so you can boogie board if you like to do that sort of thing (I spent hours in the ocean on the board). The food was excellent, snakcs and drinks were included. The sweim up bar was right outside our balcony. Walk out the back door, jump in the bar and sit at the bar. They have nightly entertainment. If I ever get some more money saved up and some time in my life, I would love to get back there. Just a suggestion. Bring it up to your travel agent, they may already know about the place. http://www.secretsexcellence.com/

Go on an Eastern or Southern Carribean cruise - see most of your chosen destinations. If you are averse to the daily schedule change, choose a cruise that stays at certain destination points for a couple days.

Yeah, I like it there too, but no comparison to Palma as far as the Mediterranean goes.

Thanks for every ones response. We are not getting married until next June, but I really want to take advantage to this 50% off. Sandals seems really nice.

Do they offer anything in Cancun? I thought that was a great vacation! And if you go to the right beaches, some are even topless. Quite a bit to do in Cancun, and you don't fear for your life when you leave the tourist areas. In fact, we had more fun when we left the tourist traps and just saw some of the small towns of Mexico. Plenty to do down there though.

Has anyone ever been to the Maine coast? Girlfriend mentioned something about it yesterday, and it's something we're thinking of doing in the next year. Looking for something on the water in the upper New England area. Any suggestions?

I used to travel up there a bit for business. Ate in downtown Portsmouth, which is on the border of MA and ME and on the coast, about an hour north of Boston. The streets are all cobblestone and there are all kinds of neat crab boats. Drove up the Maine coast to see some customers - every town is neat to see - a unique experience.

I have never been to Antigua or Jamaica, but I've been to St. Lucia. St. Lucia is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Lush, green...the Botanical Gardens are gorgeous!
I also have a friend from St. Lucia and he recommended visiting Soufiere (I think that's how you spell the city name). I loved visiting Marigot Bay...lovely homes and awesome boats/yachts around.

I was just in Grand Cayman and Jamaica 2 months ago. Had some banking to do. j/k Grand Cayman seemed nice, don't know if they have any resorts, we did a cruise, but Jamaica is a little ruff outside the tourist areas. I mean come on, when they have a fenced and guard post at a shopping plaza, where only tourists and employees can enter, you know it's a rough place. The island is beautiful, as long as you stay with a tour or something. You should consider a cruise, you can kick back and relax, or you can party 24/7 your choice, and food anytime you want. You don't have to get off at the ports for shore excursions, but you can book an excursion, or just get off the ship and walk around.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I lived in Bermuda for a few years... absolutely beautiful. Pink sand and Azure water.... it is the one and only spot in the world with that combo. Can't beat it. World-Class Golf, Diving and Sunbathing... and the nightlife in Hamiltoon is pretty good as well, especially when a cruise ship or two is in port. Rhodes, Greece... loved it. The Old Town inside the castle is awesome. So great to be inside such history. A temple to Aphrodite is right by one of the gates. Benidorm, Spain was beautiful as hell too.... a very fun city nestled between some mountains and the Mediterranean. Nice water park up in the mountains too Of course, if you want to travel a bit farther... I would recommend the south pacific islands... someplace like Truk Lagoon in Micronesia.

Costa Rica. Married my wife there. Very friendly locals (Ticos), inexpensive, and not overrun with highrise resorts, or cruise ships filled with knee high black socks with sandals wearing, fannypack and sunvisor sporting, oversized sunglass having, potbellied, AARP cardholders. Costa Rica has flowers everywhere, monkeys in the trees, warm oceans on both coasts and 11,000 foot rainforest covered mountains in the middle. Plenty of things to see and do, without the tourist crush. Couldn't recommend it more!
