Sashi Brown: Browns might roll with same QBs

By Conor Orr

NDIANAPOLIS -- Browns executive vice president Sashi Brown jokingly accused a reporter Wednesday of asking a "backdoor Garoppolo" question during his media session here at the combine. This came after several other (failed) attempts at prodding the team's head decision-maker about potentially dealing for the Patriots' backup.

As NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday, the Patriots are not inclined to deal their potential star backup and will likely hold on to him. Whether or not the development had anything to do with Brown's faith in the three quarterbacks currently on his roster -- Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan -- remains to be seen. Brown said that he expects Griffin to be on the roster in April.

"That would be something we wouldn't talk about in this forum. We've had a lot of discussions, as you can imagine, about that," Brown said. "We haven't made a final decision there one way or the other but we expect Robert to be here in April when all the other guys come back."

Griffin has a $750,000 roster bonus due on March 11, which should force the team to make a decision soon.

Brown was pressed on a later comment in which he said the Browns could very well enter 2017 with the same three quarterbacks.

"That could be the reality we're faced with so it's something you have to prepare for," Brown said. "Doesn't mean that's our target but we'll leave it at that. We do like having Cody and the work they've put in. Robert obviously had a tough year with the durability and the injury early. But the reality is that those guys are on our roster and we'll continue to develop and work with them. Doesn't necessarily mean that's our aiming point."

Brown said that all three options have quite a ways to go in order to establish themselves as a top-tier NFL starter but that it doesn't mean the team should simply give up on them.

This is never an easy press conference to have. Brown recognized the state of Cleveland’s “brand” right now and obviously has more questions than answers. This will be an exceptionally busy week for the Browns, who are preparing for two first-round draft picks and a long-term answer to their woes at quarterback, across the offensive line and on defense. Maybe next year he can reflect on a draft success and not another step in the process.

Other nuggets from Brown...

» Josh Gordon is applying for reinstatement, but Brown said Wednesday he did not know enough about the situation to comment. Gordon has not played in an NFL game.

"Frankly, I just don't know enough at this point about what that process would look like. I do understand that he's able to reapply somewhere in March and as I understand more, I'll be able to shed more light."

» Brown, asked about projected No. 1 pick Myles Garrett, smiled and said simply that the Texas A&M defensive end was a "Good player."

» Brown has no regrets about the Carson Wentz trade, and said he would make the same decision again.

"I think this is a trade we'll probably look back on and say it worked out for both teams. It allowed us to be in the position we are today with two (first-round picks), two (second-round picks) and two (third-round picks). We do like the trade for our side. Time will tell with all the young guys who came out of the trade.

»Brown said he's not worried about getting a deal done with Terrelle Pryor before free agency, but did appreciate his willingness to stay. "We've had good discussions with Terrelle himself. He and I have spoken a few times. We do have some meetings set up with his representatives and we'll see what happens there. We're looking forward to working towards finding some middle ground."

Brown would not comment on the team's decision not to offer Pryor the franchise tag.

Its March he isn't going to give any concrete commitment for anything. Of course all options are there.

Also $750k is nothing. It doesn't force us to do anything. We can pay that and then end up cutting him in August...no big deal.

if we draft a rookie, both rg3 and kessler should be here.

only way we should give rg3 the boot is if we bring in a vet, ie Bills QB (name slipped my mind), Romo, etc.

Personally I think Sashi should hang tight on a free agent QB. Ideally I like seeing Bears, Jets, and 49ers sign a QBs. It is more likely they don't draft a QB early. Browns possibly still get a chance at best QB in the draft and get best pick at #1.

It is assumed it will take the #12 pick to get Garoppolo. If that option is not available, why not risk it on a QB.

Don't forget we are in Silly Season. Who can tell what is truth or not.

Can't quite put a finger on it. It's a bunch of small snippets.

I remember the camera on him and Haslam during the last game of the year. His dour expression........as if the problem was coaching. His comments about the QBs. His handling of last year's free agents.

I could be wrong and I will certainly adjust my position as time goes on, but I have the feeling he is out of his element as the MAN of a football franchise. I think he is business/marketing guy that has been thrust into a role that is above him.

I could be wrong. It's not definitive. Just a feeling. Just like my early feelings about Holmgren and Farmer.

I know exactly what you mean.

It may be that us knowing his background (or lack) biases us when we see him talk. That's the only other thing I can think of, but I get the same feeling you do.

For another perspective. As more of an analytics and business based fan most of what he says is insanely refreshing for me. Not to say anything about whether it will work or anything of that matter or that I support or even back this FO. Just that being on the opposite spectrum may have more to do with that feeling you have. I love the colder non emotional straight to the point aspect. Perhaps that alleviates some of the feeling you may have. It sounds like the feeling I have when hue backs every single player like a son.

I'm seeing what the group does this year. They had a whole year preparing.

I will say this I am not as critical getting a QB as most. I see what happen in Buffalo and Jets. I'm so tired chasing the holy grail. Not every year produces a first round franchise QB.

Before last year's draft I thought Wentz was a make or break. He most certainly could have flopped. Many analyst stated he was a huge risk. Image Cleveland did take and he played like Goff.

Rethink what might happen had Browns not made that trade. Pryor plays like he did in 2015. I think Browns got pretty lucky. Last year had more ugly written all over it.

It is hard putting out a dumpster fire when past regimes helped build adding gasoline. It is going to take time, patience, and luck.

I don't even see the point of asking him questions this time of year. Unless he is a moron nothing he says will mean anything at all because if he says one thing it might means something completely different.

While I have questions about Garoppolo, I'm on board with taking that risk if it is available. If not, I think our best chance at a franchise QB is in next year's draft. If we don't get Jimmy, the QBs we have will have to hold down the fort.

It would make for better draft position, but I would hope for improved Oline and more experience from last year's rookies.

I agree with you that, if we can't find a long term quarterback, stinking is probably the best thing for our long term future.

Add a quality center and right tackle, and watch both Rg3 and Kessler improve.

Can't keep going 1 and done with the QB's we acquire. #1 reason why Cleveland is known as the city who kills QBs.

If you mean risking it by drafting a QB then the "why not" is because none are worthy of the #12 pick. We could still get someone who would actually help this team at 12.

The QB situation is depressing me quite a bit.

I know I'm back and forth. I'm curious what players are available at #12.

I understand you need a QB. I wish there was some team who cracks the code minimizing the QB position. I know the deck is stacked against this concept. League made it a "have" and "have not". Teams, which are about half the league, who are the "have not" compete every year for 2 QBs. Top quality or "franchise" QB appear every 3 or 4.

If you don't put yourself in position to get one of these two franchise QBs, you're screwed or pray you catch lighting in a bottle.

I think he was emoting the total dissatisfaction of us having the worst record in the NFL. Just Like I'm sure Haslam, Hue, players and all us fans were.

jmho - have a convo with him somehow someway and tell me you got a feeling then its plausible.

Of course this is me liking the Regime and buying in.

worst part of all this, by the time we finally find a QB, we're going to need another LT, which if we remember before Thomas was the reason our QB's were bad because our LT sucked...and the wheels on the bus go round and round

Hue actually complimented Crow and Duke today and said he was happy with them, which I was surprised, but did say he wants to get every position better.

Everyone seems very even keel about showing their cards. Hue was asked about Trubisky and he looked like he turned on his poker face. Wouldn't be surprised if Trubisky is the guy he wants.

If Brown told me the plan was:

All in to get Darnold next year and develop our own QB.

Get Garrett and Hooker (when he drops) or Adams with the first two picks.

If we don't get the safeties, or we choose to go Fournette/Cook at 12, look at Peppers with 33.

If we do get one of the safeties, then go best O Line avail, or trade back into the first with 33 and 52 and get the guy they believe who can make an impact on some unit.

If Brown told me this, I would be all in and wouldn't care what he looks like or what my other feelings about him are.

Swing for the fence. We need two home-run drafts and Hue to develop into a top 5, elite level, NFL Head Coach.

That happens and the nightmare is over.

But could Hue survive another season of 1-15 or 2-14? Would the fans accept another crap season? Could Haslam? Just for the chance of getting Darnold? Hell he'd probably stay in school before letting the Browns take him, then we would be in year 3 of the rebuild with still no QB.

Hue has to get his guy this year, or he is done after year 3.

Bengals want a 2nd rounder for McCarron ... no thanks.

Hue may have different thoughts though

If we went for AJ McC then i'd lose all respect for this front office/HC combo because that would just be idiocy. The same if they went for tyrod.

Maybe our 2nd 2nd. Just because he knows the system and Hue knows what he's getting. I don't think Bengals will do that though. There'll be an extra premium to bring him here.

I'm beginning to think we'll pick up Trubisky though. Sounds crazy, but fits what Hue is looking for. Accurate, quick decision maker, big enough to play in the AFC North. The 13 games thing makes me real nervous, but I am beginning to think he might be that guy. Would I rather have just taken Wentz at this point, and we'd be able to have Myles Garrett (assuming we went 1-15)? Probably. But is what it is

Do we have a 2nd 2nd? I can't even get our picks straight anymore.

I'd be okay with Trubisky at 12, but obviously he won't be there. I want Garrett

No. 52. We have an extra everything except 3rd rounder and a 6th rounder. We have no 7th rounders

EDIT: I'd be okay with Trubisky at 12 too. I don't see him lasting that long though neither. Too many QB needy teams. I woudln't be surprised if Shannahan takes him 2 if we don't take him 1. The QB is key. If we see a guy we think can be our franchise QB and we don't have one, we'll take him. That's up to Huey and the FO

--I am not a fan of McCarron. His arm is below average and he is not a real popular guy w/his teammates. I wouldn't trade for him at all and I think a 2nd round pick would be insane.

--I also think using the 12th pick for Trub--or any qb in this draft--is a reach.

--I want no part of Kap or Cutler. They would be horrible fits w/such a young team.

--I still desperately am hoping for Jimmy G, but if he isn't available, I guess Taylor would be the next best thing. I don't mind Hoyer at all, but that seems like a stretch. Maybe Foles?

All of the people who hated the talk of a 2nd (or a 3rd) for Jimmy because he was drafted in the 2nd and "didn't show anything to improve his value" should really hate this. AJ was drafted in the 5th and certainly has not shown anything to improve his value.

No thanks to McCarron. I would just as soon watch Kessler flutter 5 yard butterflies.
