Linked to NFL.com, not PFT . . . NFL Announces 330 Participants in the Scouting CombinePosted by Josh Alper on February 15, 2017, 12:01 PM EST The NFL has released the list of players expected at this year’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and there are 330 names on it this year. Big names like Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, LSU running back Leonard Fournette, Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett and Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen are all on the list and expected to be taking part in some or all of the activities. Others like Ohio State safety Malik Hooker and Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis are recovering from injuries and will be limited to meeting with teams at the event, which starts on February 28 and runs through March 6 this year. As always, though, there are some players who failed to get on the list whose names are familiar to those who follow the college game. A NFL rule barring the participation of those convicted and/or charged with violence or use of a weapon, domestic violence or sexual offenses means Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly, Baylor wide receiver Ishmael Zamora and Ole Miss wide receiver Damor’ea Stringfellow won’t be taking part. Michigan has the most players participating with 14 Wolverines on the list, but neither right tackle Erik Magnuson nor right guard Kyle Kalis will be there. Magnuson was an All-Big Ten selection in 2016 and both made a lot of starts in Ann Arbor over their collegiate careers. Kalis has already considered an alternate career path should the NFL not work out. Northwestern wide receiver Austin Carr isn’t on the list despite 90 catches for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns and spearheading the effort to shut down Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in a win over Louisville wasn’t enough for Houston linebacker Steven Taylor to get a call. Utah defensive end Hunter Dimick led the FBS in sacks with 14 last year will also be absent in Indy. Dane Brugler of CBS Sports points out that 15 percent of the players drafted last year did not take part in the Scouting Combine while 35 percent of those that did were passed over in the seven rounds of the draft, so a combine invite doesn’t make or break the chances of an NFL career.

Everyone should keep an eye out for Mike Mayock's pre-combine conference call.
A lot of good info is put out then.

The Combine is nothing more than a glorified physical.
Watching quarterbacks throw is nothing more than watching a pitcher warm up. They have no real time to know the receivers. No defense. The only thing it shows is the ball coming out of their hands.
Other positions? Non football drills.
Injuries, health, height, weight, speed, athleticism and interviews.
Game tape tells if the guy can play.

To me the only real information we as fans get is an official height, weight, and 40 time. Up until this point in these guy's careers we've only had speculation on those things. Colleges list players' measurements inaccurately all the time. We know from tape a player is fast, but the combine puts a number to it for us.

I do think the combine benefits those who are making position switches IE a college DE who may be too light for DE in the NFL and have to play OLB, the drills will show you if he has a chance or not.

I don't think it's without benefits, but the combine is a real bore. Over-hyped.

I remember in 2007. I was on the AP hype train, full go.
Then one night I was randomly watching NFL Network, and they had the Olineman doing drills.
Staley came up and was pretty good, whatever. Few other dudes. Meh.
Then Joe Thomas was up.
Dude was a MACHINE. Nothing got by him, and it looked like nothing ever would.
I was all in on JT after that.

Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

When I think combine, I only think about whether or not the Browns will interview right. Ask the right questions.
I agree that the rest is just running, jumping and throwing. I have never watched a second of it.
I always roll my eyes when I hear someone say a guy's combine will shoot him up the big boards

I was on the Joe train before that. I remember wanting to lose to the Texans to improve our chances at getting him. I would love to see him get a ring. We need to do this before he retires.

I remember being so nervous that we wouldn't draft Joe Thomas ... when the pick was announced I screamed and ran around the house
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I don't buy that. Scouts haven't see all of these players in person. It's a good way to see them in person. I think it is a good way to maybe weed out a few people. Many times the numbers listed by the colleges in inflated. Now you can see if the player really does push 4.3 in speed, or really is a strong player, or agile. It may not tell you much about the top players, but it can open your eyes to some of the mid level guys.

I always roll my eyes when I hear someone say a guy's combine will shoot him up the big boards The interviews are surely the most important thing. Same thing with the height measurable. Hand measurable is important for QBs too I guess. Can't be a coincidence we had Jared Goff throw those wet footballs. Otherwise I think the combine is a way for scouts/managers to reconfirm a lot of what they saw on the film.

You get to see how players stack up against each other and past players athletically, and coaches and personnel get to meet the players first hand to see if they are gonna be dedicated clean football players. And of course the medical part. I enjoy watching it.

I liken the combine to a meat market like putting cattle on display to see how much they are worth ... Don't get me wrong I watch it every year it just reminds me of selling a product ...

The combine is extremely beneficial but its more then just the 40 and the bench.
eg im looking forward to seeing if Desmond King has any explosion to his game and can he flip his hips...
I want to see the QBs side by side, want to see how the ball comes out of their hands, get to see their velocity side by side etc...

Hue Jackson & Sashi Brown to meet with the media at the NFL Combine Feb 24, 2017, 2:02pm EST by Chris Pokorny@DawgsByNature link Every year at the NFL Combine, the majority of teams have a representative or two who hold a mini press conference. This year, the Cleveland Browns are one of the teams who will have both their head coach and another representative from the team speak. On Wednesday, March 1st, executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown will meet with the media at 12:00 PM ET. On Thursday, March 2nd, head coach Hue Jackson will be the first interview of the day when he speaks at 9:00 AM ET. Keep in mind that the deadline to place a franchise or transition tag on a player is March 1st at 4:00 PM ET. That means that we should know something about WR Terrelle Pryor’s status with the team when either Brown or Jackson speak. It is also possible one or more members of the Browns' front office will host a special session for Cleveland-area reporters only. The full list of "official" interviews scheduled in Indianapolis can be found here. schedule We will have reports on every press conference that has any Browns-related nuggets.

in terms of maximizing the #1 pick's trade value, is the better approach to allude to wanting Garrett or to keep it ambiguous and make it seem like we're also considering the best QB?

It's the silly season. You hype Garrett like crazy and you hype one of the QB's like crazy and it probably isn't a bad idea to hype Allen as well. You want every team out there thinking that you are taking their guy. If they don't think that, they are talking to the team with the #2 pick to get a cheaper deal.

We have already come out and said that we have Garrett ranks very high and it would take a lot of chips for us to move out. When you are at #1 you really don't have to smokescreen. What's the point? You can take whoever you want. You don't have to try to jump ahead of somebody or try to keep someone from jumping ahead of you to snatch the player you really want.

j/c for draft nerds
I haven't seen it announced yet but everyone should keep an eye out for Mike Mayock pre combine press conference. It's one of the most informative pieces of combine information that you'll get in one honest unbiased sitting.

http://www.news-herald.com/article/HR/20170129/SPORTS/170129388Sounds like the Browns and Bears will be meeting with Kareem Hunt at the combine. As far as the running back position goes, I'm fairly torn on it. I think Crow is still getting it. I like Duke as our shifty back. I'm not so sure that we need another guy. But if we do get another guy, I hope he's a big back. Someone who can play like Blount did this year for the Pats. A guy who can come in during shotgun downs and truck stick every nickel DB on the field. Running the ball out of the shotgun formation is invaluable, but pretty difficult with the angles and running lanes being very different than their pro counterparts. However, having a guy that can overpower DBs certainly helps. That's why I think we should look at guys like that. Some names are; Kareem Hunt, Fournette, D'Onta Foreman, James Conner, and Samaje Perine. I'm interested to see what all of their combine numbers will be.

We really don't need any RB's. Our 1/2 is set. 3rd string guys rarely get PT.
Of the guys you mentioned, I really like D'Onta Foreman and James Conner. I know Conner had cancer and dealt with some other injuries. If he can get back to form, he would be a nice Big back to have.

Just saying, it isn't always about need when drafting players. Needs play a role, but it pays to draft the best player available maybe 75% of the time.

Also RBs get banged up so that #3 is useful and this kids burst seems pretty good...hard to tell speed with college guys, his 40 doesn't look so hot so far (curious what he does in the combine) but on film his game day speed looks excellent.

Way more than 75%, my friend. I know what you are saying, but if you have 10 draft picks, that is 7.5 players based on BPA. It's not unreasonable to think a team is going to use 2 selections to target a need or two. But sure, if you have 100 picks, 25 selections based on needs is foolish. Just trying to explain that my 75% comment isn't so crazy sounding, based on sample size.

Fournette weighed in at 240 pounds.
Part of me wants to draft him just because he will be so fun to watch if he hits his peak.

Couple surprising or reassuring measurements form the combine so far...
Small school OT davenport that a lot of you like has 36.5" arms. Inhuman.
Many of the centers underwhelmed but Toth and fuller measured best at 33 5/8 and 34 1/8 respectively.
Lamp showed up heavier at 310 but still had 32" arms. Bummer
Oj Howard heavier than expected at 249 with 10" hands while Everett lighter at 240 even.
Pocic whom I really don't care for is officially 6'6 with trex arms.

Davenport's cousin is Michael Kids Gilchrist, I suspect he'll put up some pretty crazy numbers this week. I really wanted him in round 3 but I don't think he'll be there after this week.

Text from NFL exec-- biggest talk at Combine, and it's not close--USC QB is rare. (It's tough to ignore him when you're studying other guys) https://twitter.com/MoveTheSticks/status/836951471321145345Darnold will be a redshirt sophomore next year. Word in LA is that he might stay an extra year after that. He is a USC lifer (his whole family went to USC, including his grandfather, Dick Hammer (aka The Marlboro Man)).
