Here is his statement on the matter:

Quote:
During the course of the confirmation proceedings on my nomination to be Attorney General, I advised the Senate Judiciary Committee that ‘[i]f a specific matter arose where I believed my impartiality might reasonably be questioned, I would consult with Department ethics officials regarding the most appropriate way to proceed.

During the course of the last several weeks, I have met with the relevant senior career Department officials to discuss whether I should recuse myself from any matters arising from the campaigns for President of the United States.

Having concluded those meetings today, I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for President of the United States.

I have taken no actions regarding any such matters, to the extent they exist.

This announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation of the existence of any investigation or suggestive of the scope of any such investigation.

Consistent with the succession order for the Department of Justice, Acting Deputy Attorney General and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana Boente shall act as and perform the functions of the Attorney General with respect to any matters from which I have recused myself to the extent they exist.

That seems very reasonable to me. I don't have all the facts in the case, but it seems like a refreshing case of impartiality. It is hard for somebody who was involved in a campaign to objectively investigate said campaign.

I see no evidence or suggestion of guilt. What exactly did he do wrong again? It seems like, at most, there was some confusion in wording regarding whether he had contact with Russian officials in regards to the Trump campaign versus having contact with Russian officials generally. Let us know when you actually have something.

SO after seeing what happened yesterday with Sessions and seeing the media still on this hot and heavy, I think he may be forced to resign soon. And it may be just optics but this looks terrible on this administration, especially with it coming out that Trump's son-in-law had contact with the ruskies too.

Cenk Uygur of TYT is putting forward that he thinks Trump made a secret deal with Russia to get paid for the big Exxon oil deal. He says he has no proof but when adding 2+2 you come up with the art of the deal. Definitely food for thought I guess, but I don't think even Trump is that stupid and ballsy.

I think at the end of the day, Trump escapes any damage but I think Sessions and a few others might be done.

Flashback: 30 Senate Democrats Met With Russian Diplomats To Advance Obama’s Iran Deal

Cristina Laila

Mar 2nd, 2017

The Democrats are obsessed with Russian conspiracy theories. It seems that only Democrats are allowed to speak with Russia because nobody complained back in 2015 when 30 Senate Democrats met with Russian Diplomats in order to advance Obama’s Iran nuclear deal.

Foreign Policy reports in August of 2015:

The White House says it’s confident it has the votes to override Republicans who reject the historic accord to limit Iran’s nuclear program agreed to by world powers and Tehran. But some of America’s closest allies are less certain, and are clearing their schedules to meet with wavering Democratic lawmakers in a push to keep the deal intact.

Some of Washington’s less reliable partners are worried too: Top diplomats from Russia and China joined a rare meeting of world powers’ envoys on Capitol Hill this week with roughly 30 Senate Democrats to tamp down concerns over the nuclear agreement.

During the meeting, which was confirmed to Foreign Policy by an aide to Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a number of Democrats expressed genuine confusion about how world powers would react if Congress rejected the deal, and whether a “better deal” could be struck in the future. Surprised by this lack of clarity, the diplomats pushed back on a number of counts.

British Ambassador Peter Westmacott insisted any chances of getting a better deal were “far-fetched,” according to two individuals in the room. He also speculated that international sanctions against Tehran would fall apart even if Congress blocked the deal — a view seconded by Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Read the rest of this article here.

Strange how the Democrats can meet with Russian ambassadors and no one ever accused them of being Russian puppets, yet President Trump and his administration are constantly accused of wild Russian conspiracy theories. The Russian narrative is fake news propped up by the media in order to legitimize President Trump.

Here's a thought for the conservative types on here: Give an inch and they'll take a mile. If anybody had the idea that Trump could 'sacrifice' Flynn and the left would call off the dogs, let's put that to rest.

We gave them Flynn and now they are going after Sessions. Give them Sessions and they will go after Conway. Give them Conway and they will go after Bannon. Give them Bannon and they will go after Pence. Give them Pence...

There is no end to this. Since the Democrats can't actually get their people into office by voting them in, these are the tactics they have left.

I'm pointing this out because if you understand it, if you can predict it, you will not be shaken by it. I am not opposed to firing somebody who has done something seriously wrong. What I'm opposed to are knee-jerk reactions to invented controversies where you get rid of good people to satisfy people who will never be satisfied.

It was completely understandable to investigate those emails multiple times and the Benghazi committees were totally non-partisan.

So I agree. The fact that some from both parties want to investigate why President Trump asked Russia to hack emails and that some of his staff met with one of Russia's top spies is a complete partisan witch hunt.

The way I see it, it is politics as usual. What exactly do the Democrats expect to find?
Will they find Trumps administration is made up of Russian spies? No.
Will they find that Russia changed even one vote? No.
Will they find Perjury? No. You have to prove intent to mislead.
Will they manage to continually disrupt the Executive branch? Yea, probably.

Did you know that by Session saying he will recuse himself, the duty of investigation falls to the next in line which is an attorney promoted by Obama?

Try and keep up 40. Sessions has already admitted he spoke with the Russian guy.

Now we have Kushner in the meeting with a russian and Flynn.

And it appears there is more to come.

lol. How would Sessions be reacting if this happened to a Democrat AD? If during a Senate Hearing the appointee said he had no contact with the Russians, which turned out to be a lie.

I mean, for godsakes, Sessions was a lawyer and has been a Senator since 1997. Twenty freakin years (which is a whole other thing in itself). He knows how this works. He should have be completely open and honest at his hearing so that this wouldn't come back to bite him.

Especially for a position like Attorney General.

You keep up. Meeting with the Russians is not a crime. Discussing the campaign with them is. Everyone involved has met with multiple Ambassadors throughout but they knew they couldn't discuss the campaign. They certainly had every right to be cordial.

Have fun playing though. We got work to do. thumbsup

how completely flawed is this logic?

you "gave" us flynn but we won't stop?

this is easily one of the most ridiculous post you have ever made. Flynn was corrupt, and now Sessions is as well, but because we got one corrupt person, we should stop there?

Nazi: I mean, we gave you guys hitler, what more do you want?

^^^ thats the same logic you're using. because we got one person, we should just stop trying to get the corrupt out of office/power?

Bannon is an alt-right white supremacist. yea, i want him gone. that fact that you don't says a lot, by the way.

Conway is constantly lying. bowling green massacre? yea, she needs to bounce. the fact you are cool with her constantly lying says a lot, by the way.

you're such a hypocrite. all you did was whine about hillary and her (alleged) corruption, but now you and others seem to be perfectly fine with Trump's administration being corrupt.

it shows that you don't care about corruption, as long as your guy doing it.

"sacrifice". lmao, the hell out of here with that BS. your people are corrupt as all hell and bought by the Kremlin. suck it up cause we aren't gonna stop.

how bout you stop whining about us, and start calling out your corrupt ass leaders. swear to god, you're the kind of person that back in the day was complaining about the media covering the holocaust instead of being mad at the people killing off the jews.

you're the kind of person that was pissed at blacks wanting equal rights in the 60's, but not saying anything about the lynchings and such.

"we got rid of jim crow, what more do they want"

that's what you sound like right now. very sad.

Whatever you say, Swish. I know you hate the "fake ass Christian viagra taking white guys" on this board. Maybe you can go off on one of your eruptions about getting revenge on cops that prompted several of our more progressive members to discuss with you in private message what is and isn't acceptable.

Oh you don't like the ad hominems? I don't either but I could do this all day if that's where you want to go.

By the way, your post proves my point better than I could have. Your comments on Flynn, Sessions, Bannon, and Conway show your true feelings. I could do without all the side stuff about how Bannon is alt-right (he's not), Holocaust denial (where tf did that come from?) and all that but I've come to expect that from you.

As long as people go into discussions with you with the understanding that you have the emotional stability of a young child, it is easy to not get rattled.

Jeff Sessions used political funds for RNC expenses

https://gma.yahoo.com/jeff-sessions-used...topstories.html

my god. that article...smh.

so let's see, we have:

2 security advisors already resigned.
an attorney general literally weeks away from most likely resigning.
a Education department head who literally bought her way into the position
A retired doctor who is somehow the head of urban development
a guy who hates the EPA now running it
A guy who hates the department of energy now running it
guys with ties to the kremlin as our SoS
a Rothchild banker as our head of commerce.

and i havent even mentioned Trump, yet.

*golf clap* i never thought i'd see this level of dysfunction in American politics before. you conservatives are amazing, as you find new ways to outdo yourselves. just when we think it can't get any worse, you guys are there to save the day and show us that there is no such thing as rock bottom.

the truth hurts. the people you voted for are trash.

straight up hot garbage. whats sad is you don't even realize that i'm not angry. i'm calm and happy. as i said before, i have my life boat already. I'm set.

it's not my fault that you're ignorant enough to vote against your own interest. you literally voted for people who don't give a damn about you. you voted for all these corrupt, big corporate guys who are about to lower their own tax rate, while sticking all the tax burdens on you.

did you see the nonsense they are talking about with the tax plan. they really want to do a border tax.

you think Trump is paying for that? the guy hasn't paid taxes in 20 years. the big businesses that he's about the cut the taxes for haven't paid taxes in years. this guy is gonna retire in his tower, or on some island while me and you pay the bill.

so yea, i do hate a certain percentage of that demographic. why?

Now an Obama appointee can name a special prosecutor to investigate Trump and Russia

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/now-obama-appointee-name-special-223921337.html

Now that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from any investigations regarding the 2016 presidential campaigns, the man who gets to decide whether to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate President Donald Trump's pre-election dealings with Russia is an appointee of Barack Obama.

When the attorney general is recused from an investigation, oversight of that investigation ordinarily falls to the department's deputy. But currently, there is no deputy attorney general — Sessions is the only Trump nominee who has been confirmed to any position in the Justice Department.

The job of deputy attorney general is currently being done on an acting basis by Dana Boente, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who was nominated to that position by Barack Obama.

He is apparently so well known to Sessions' team that he is referred to in Sessions' recusal letter as "Dane Boente."

Despite the misspelling, Sessions' recusal letter delegates to Boente all functions from which he has recused himself. This includes the attorney general's power to appoint a special prosecutor in the event that a criminal investigation is warranted and would present a conflict of interest if pursued by Justice Department litigators.

This has happened before: In 2003, when then-Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself from an investigation into allegations that White House officials intentionally leaked the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame, his deputy (fun fact: James Comey) appointed a special prosecutor to pursue the investigation.

Boente likely won't be acting deputy for much longer. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings next week on confirming US Attorney Rod Rosenstein to that job. Rosenstein was previously nominated to multiple positions, including the position he holds today, by George W. Bush.

In theory, if Boente were to appoint a special prosecutor, Rosenstein could fire that prosecutor once confirmed. But obviously, the political optics of firing a special prosecutor would be much more challenging than the optics of declining to name one in the first place. (Just ask Richard Nixon.)

So, will Boente do it? Presumably, that depends on whether he thinks a criminal investigation related to the presidential election is warranted, and whether he thinks it's a conflict of interest for the department to investigate the president who oversees the department.

Though he is a Democratic appointee to his current job, Boente is a career employee of the Justice Department. The New York Times describes him as liked by Democrats and Republicans and seen as loyal to the department itself.

Before Boente became acting deputy attorney general, he was acting attorney general, a position he obtained when Trump fired then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates for refusing to defend his travel ban executive order in court.

Boente loyally pursued the department's (unsuccessful, to date) defense of the ban. But unlike refusing to defend the ban, appointing a special prosecutor would not represent a breach of the chain of command.

normally i wouldn't be this interested in republicans being bought off by corporations. even dems are bought off.

but we haven't seen this level of corruption and dysfunction since Nixon. as a matter of fact, we're seeing similar rhetoric from Trump as we are Nixon.

as we all know how that turned out.

all well.

The problem is that we are living in two different worlds. We see things very differently and with very little common ground. I can easily refute what you wrote, but what's the point? Somehow you have all day, every day to spew your nonsense and that is something I can't keep up with. Every time I get sucked in, I lose hours of my day and get behind on things. I don't even know why I'm responding right now.

As I wrote in either this thread or the other one, Democrats obviously can't win enough elections anymore. See: Presidency, Senate, House, Supreme Court, state Governors. Democrats have to resort to these dirty, underhanded tactics to stay relevant. When liberals say they are going to try to remove Trump by any means necessary, they are not talking about voting him out in 2020! (That is a last resort.)

A common setup goes something like this:

- Accuse Russia of meddling and all sorts of other things. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. I have not seen strong enough evidence either way to know.

- Get rival politicians, many of whom are lawyers by profession, to ask very tricky and pointed questions in an accusatory manner to members of Trump's team who (presumably) know they have done nothing wrong.

- Get a steadfast denial in a manner that appears truthful, because to the person questioned, it is.

- Use tricky wordplay and interpretations to make it look like a lie even though it's not (this is why you don't talk to police about a crime without a lawyer present. Even if you believe you're innocent, you can get caught up in the most trivial inconsistencies and it is easy to frame those as lies.)

- Dress all this nonsense up in some official sounding report with juicy phrases like "secretly met with a Russian official"; normally there is enough plausible deniability written into it that it can't be completely debunked although sometimes they can't even be bothered to do that. See the outrageously fake "Pissgate" dossier.

obviously you can't refute much because you haven't done it yet. all the time you waste talking about "whats the point?" could've been used refuting those points.

you obviously have enough time to write these post, so it's hilarious watching you write about "sucked in" and all this other stuff. your actions aren't lining up with your rhetoric.

and what is this stuff about dems not being able to win elections anymore? we just had the oval for 8 years. your election cycle JUST started with control over the government, but somehow in your world, you're talking as if we haven't won in decades.

stop exaggerating.

your entire post can be summed up in one sentence: you're pissed that the media is actually doing their jobs and calling out the corruption in the administration that you voted for.

and after all that, you still can't refute this point: the majority does not support trump. the majority did not vote for Trump.

sorry bro. he does not have majority support of the American people. and as of now, he's done absolutely nothing to GAIN any support.

you guys have the majority in all levels of government......and have accomplished absolutely nothing. all this "day one we're doing this" talk.

i've seen no policies that actually benefit us as a whole.

but i've seen policies that make us look like intolerant rednecks, though. if you consider that an accomplishment, they hey; more power to you.

you obviously have enough time to write these post, so it's hilarious watching you write about "sucked in" and all this other stuff. your actions aren't lining up with your rhetoric.

and what is this stuff about dems not being able to win elections anymore? we just had the oval for 8 years. your election cycle JUST started with control over the government, but somehow in your world, you're talking as if we haven't won in decades.

stop exaggerating.

your entire post can be summed up in one sentence: you're pissed that the media is actually doing their jobs and calling out the corruption in the administration that you voted for.

and after all that, you still can't refute this point: the majority does not support trump. the majority did not vote for Trump.

sorry bro. he does not have majority support of the American people. and as of now, he's done absolutely nothing to GAIN any support.

you guys have the majority in all levels of government......and have accomplished absolutely nothing. all this "day one we're doing this" talk.

i've seen no policies that actually benefit us as a whole.

but i've seen policies that make us look like intolerant rednecks, though. if you consider that an accomplishment, they hey; more power to you.

Like many other posters on here, I understand that arguing about all this stuff is a waste of time. Just because I understand that, and sometimes openly acknowledge it, doesn't mean that I never post here.

You can look at my join date and number of posts and see that I don't post on here as often as some, but I still spend more time here than I should. Ideally I'd just bow out of these political threads for good (I managed to avoid them for about two months from November to January) but alas, sometimes I do get sucked back in. This is addicting in its own way.

There is more to elections than just the Presidency. It's losing the Presidency in an election where multiple Supreme Court justices are likely to be nominated. It's being a minority in both chambers of Congress. It's losing state governors and members of state legislatures, and yes the Democratic party is failing miserably even if we did just have eight years of Obama.

No candidate won a majority in the Presidential race-- neither Trump nor Clinton. Clinton won a slightly larger minority. Trump won comfortably in the electoral vote, aka the only one that matters.

Trump has been President for about six weeks and this administration has gotten a lot done compared to other what other administrations did in their first six weeks. It would be helpful if Democrats would not stall most of Trump's appointees, just as it would be helpful if liberals would attempt to make reasonable compromises instead of trying to actively sabotage this administration at every opportunity.

Keep it up though. As I've written on here before, few things bind people on the right together as much as disdain for liberals.

Clinton won by the people. Trump won by the system.

So yea, somebody got majority support, the other, currently sitting in office, did not.

and sabotage? The dems don't have to sabotage anything. The administration is doing it all on their own.

you guys can have disdain all you want. just don't get mad when we call you out for your reasonings.

especially since it seems like that whole "bind people together" comment ain't exactly happening, as conservatives seem to become more and more split on the support/unsupport of Trump as these weeks pass.

but you right, we live in two different worlds. I live in a world where we try to take care of everybody in our country.

you live in a world where you only care about yourself, and hoping the corporations gives you the table scraps like a peasant.

Here's what I find funny about the entire thing. The question Sessions was asked wasn't even about himself. Franken didn't ask him if he had talked to the Russians. Sessions answer concerning himself was offered up by himself. He served it up like Serena Williams at a tennis match.

He offered up a lie on a question he wasn't even asked.

i agree.

and what's worse, he didn't even have to lie about it!! all he had to say was that he met them. the senate was gonna confirm him anyway like they did everybody else.

he literally lied for no reason.

Exactly. I'm beginning to think the (R) associated with republicans now stands for The "Russian" party.

Clinton won a plurality (48%) of the votes. Just leaving that for the record; it's not meant positively or negatively.

The only other thing I have to say right now is that nobody I know who voted for Trump now regrets that decision.

as we all know how that turned out.

I lived through those days. I voted for Nixon in that election.

Something crazy every week in the WH happened. Then the truth finally surfaced through excellent reporting, tapes, and a WH leak surfaced.

This is a going to be a real mess for this administration for a long time. The investigations are mounting and aren't going to go away. They are in full damage control now and nothing is getting done. No plans laid out for anything. Just cheap talk. The time line pushed back on repeal and replace bill, no tax reform bill in the works. No substantial plans at all.

Mike Pence Used a Private Email Account to Conduct State Business, Report Says

Ken Thomas / AP

6:07 AM Eastern

(WASHINGTON) — Vice President Mike Pence used a private email account to conduct public business as Indiana's governor, according to public records obtained by the Indianapolis Star.

The newspaper reported Thursday that emails provided through a public records request show that Pence communicated with advisers through his personal AOL account on homeland security matters and security at the governor's residence during his four years as governor.

The governor also faced email security issues. Pence's AOL account was subjected to a phishing scheme last spring, before he was chosen by Donald Trump to join the GOP presidential ticket. Pence's contacts were sent an email falsely claiming that the governor and his wife were stranded in the Philippines and needed money.

The governor moved to a different AOL account with additional security measures, Pence spokesman Marc Lotter said, but has since stopped using the new personal account since he was sworn-in as vice president.

Lotter said Pence "maintained a state email account and a personal email account" like previous governors in the state. At the end of his term Pence directed outside counsel to review all of his communications to ensure that state-related emails were transferred and properly archived by the state, the spokesman said.

As Trump's running mate, Pence frequently criticized rival Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as President Barack Obama's secretary of state, accusing her of purposely keeping her emails out of public reach and shielding her from scrutiny.

Lotter said "the comparison is absurd" because Clinton had set up a private server in her home at the start of her tenure at the State Department and, unlike Clinton, Pence did not handle any classified material as Indiana's governor.

The newspaper reported that the office of Pence's successor, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, released more than 30 pages from Pence's AOL account, but declined to release an unspecified number of emails because they were considered confidential.

Public officials are not barred from using personal email accounts under Indiana law, but the law is interpreted to mean that any official business conducted on private email must be retained to comply with public record laws.

The state requires all records pertaining to state business to be retained and available for public information requests. Emails involving state email accounts are captured on the state's servers, but any emails that Pence may have sent from his AOL account to another private account would need to be retained.

At the end of his term, Pence hired the Indianapolis law firm of Barnes & Thornburg to conduct a review of all of his communications and that review is still ongoing, Lotter said. Any correspondence between Pence's AOL account and any aides using a state email account would have been automatically archived, he said.

Sessions' spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday night that he had met with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. before the presidential election last year in his capacity as a then-senator.

-Not illegal.

Try and keep up 40. Sessions has already admitted he spoke with the Russian guy.

Now we have Kushner in the meeting with a russian and Flynn.

And it appears there is more to come.

You keep up. Meeting with the Russians is not a crime. Discussing the campaign with them is. Everyone involved has met with multiple Ambassadors throughout but they knew they couldn't discuss the campaign. They certainly had every right to be cordial.

Have fun playing though. We got work to do. thumbsup

You're right 40. I'm sure that when Sessions met the Russian Ambassadors in the middle of the most controversial, widely publicized and media scrutinized election of all time, in no way shape or form did they possibly discuss it or anything about Trump's campaign. No. Possible. Way.

GOOD CALL!!!

Well before he recused himself he was quite sure he didn't discuss anything about the campaign with them.

But during the press conference where he recused himself, he suddenly doesn't recollect.

You know that has to be the fault of the liberals. lmao

Knee jerk reactions for lying to congress while under oath in confirmation hearings? This isn't going to go away anytime soon. May as well get used to it and hope nothing else pops up next week.

Kinda like when Bill Clinton met with the AG, Loretta Lynch, in Phoenix I believe. A private, "chance" meeting. I'm sure no illicit conversation took place about the investigation and possible prosecution of hillary, right?

At least, that's what we were told at the time.

About Sessions, some one clear this up for me. Was he a nominee to be A.G. during the time he met with a Russian/s? I think not.

Was he active in the Trump campaign at the time? I don't know.

Is there ever a reason for a senator to meet with a rep. from a foreign country? Probably?

Is the main issue that Sessions apparently lied under oath during his nominee confirmation hearing?

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo joined several Republicans and six other Democratic senators that day in an appeal to Kislyak for Moscow to reverse its blockade of U.S. adoptions of Russian children.

Other Democratic senators in that meeting were: Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Maria Cantwell of Washington, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Robert Casey of Pennsylvania and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island.

Klobuchar said in a statement afterward that she was able to tell Kislyak the stories of families she met in Minnesota. Landrieu is no longer a senator after losing her seat in 2014.

For longtime Washington officials, Kislyak would indeed be a familiar face. He’s been the ambassador to the U.S. since 2008, and served in various posts representing the former Soviet Union in the 1980s.

“I’ve met with the Russian ambassador with a group, in my capacity, with a group of other senators,” Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., told CNN. “That’s in my official capacity. That’s nothing. That’s my job.”
