Of all the qbs at the Combine, the one who impressed me the most was Nathan Peterman, out of Pitt. I remember watching him beat Clemson earlier this year where he kept making throw after throw after throw. But, I hadn't really given him much consideration. Until yesterday.......
What impressed me:
--Mechanics: I really like his feet. Very quick. Great alignment. I also love how he displayed great hip flexibility and how he used them to transfer his weight on his throws. His arm mechanics, while I did not focus on that as much, looked good too.
--Accuracy: I thought he was by far the most accurate qb out there. I kept saying......."who was that dude?" Put most of the throws right on the money. Great ball placement.
--Arm strength: Looked okay to me. Not a rocket, but the ball got there quick. Hard to tell when there isn't coverage, though.
--Timing: While it is understandable why many qbs struggled w/timing w/the WRs they have never worked w/before, Peterman did not seem to have that problem. He took his drops and "boom," the ball was out.
I was curious, so I just reviewed some takes on him. Here are a few. I'll just post the title or an excerpt and you can read the rest of the article by clicking on the link:

MATT MILLER'S SCOUTING NOTEBOOK: IS NATHAN PETERMAN THIS YEAR'S DAK PRESCOTT?
We’ll begin with Peterman because he’s been by far the most impressive quarterback here. Says one evaluator who has studied Peterman extensively: “He reminds me a lot of Kirk Cousins in this sense: He’s not going to blow you away with any of his traits, but he can do everything you need.” The evaluator stressed that Peterman is very mature. A graduate transfer from Tennessee, he enrolled at Pitt in 2015 to pursue an MBA and the 22-year-old got married to his longtime girlfriend in April.
I know people liked Peterman's play in the Senior Bowl.
Does Sashi and Hue pull the trigger early and take him at #12? Now there is a thought to ponder.
Here is another thought to ponder. Browns do the unthinkable draft Peterman at #12. Come right back and #33 taking Davis Webb. I'm not saying this is good or bad. Let's say analytics states this greatly enhances your chance finding a QB.
I think part of our problem last year was a lack of reps for our QBs. RG3 got most of them and then got hurt. I'm not sure using multiple high picks on QBs would be a good idea. Especially with the talent available elsewhere.
All the (top) QBs in this draft look like they will need a lot of reps before they are ready.
Peterman looks interesting, but the arm strength is a question. I watched the Miami tape. His pass catchers (droppers?) didn't do him many favors. He looked pretty decisive for the most part and had good mechanics in a clean pocket. He looked pretty advanced as far as using his eyes and manipulating DBs. Pretty good movement in the pocket, but not much of a threat on the ground. He did force some passes and had some underthrows.
He's kind of in the Brady/Cousins mold. Obviously not on that level, but he can probably be a solid backup and spot starter. Maybe he'll grow into more, but arm strength could hold him back.
You mess with the "Bull," you get the horns. Fiercely Independent.
If the Browns make the trade for Jimmy Garrapolo I think Peterman would be a great selection in the 3rd or 4th rounds.
Three QB's with ability to run an offense and win games in Garrapolo, Kessler, and Peterman would be a huge leap forward for this franchise in terms of quality players at that position.
Peterman could be a potential starter in a few years but in no way shape or form do I see him as a starter in 2017.
I would agree on Peterman. I liked overall what I saw from Webb as well. Trubisky looked like the best QB out there from QB drills I saw, and I was impressed with Watson. The guy I really wanted to see was Mahomes - I wasn't impressed.
I think we'll have Trubisky, Watson, Kizer, Webb, Mahomes, and Peterman all go in the first 2 rounds.
Off subject, but Raekwon McMillan nailed it today.
"pro-style" QB, rhythm drop back passer 3-5-7 step drops
he's a better athlete/runner then you & most give him credit for....eg much better then his media comp of Kirk Cousins
good arm, not a plus arm, but don't see anymore a question with his arm then any other prospect
btw- it doesn't matter big picture but not sure why NP gets SB praise though *shrugs* i watched the practices and game and Peterman struggled in a situation where i expectes him to seperate himself
I watched some of his Clemson film on youtube. He made plays, but he needs to learn to protect his body. A few times I had flashbacks while watching his play of how Kessler looked everytime he made a risky throw and got his head knocked off.
The intent of the thread was just to give us another guy to look at more than what we have in the past. I know I knew next to nothing about him before the other day. It's all about education...
The more I look, the better he looks. Wonder why he isn't being talked about more?
I think it's the arm strength thing. I just don't see the same zip with him that i do with the other guys.
Kind of sets a ceiling for him, just like Kessler. Accurate passer, but in tight windows sometimes you gotta zip the ball in there, and i just don't see much zip
Me either. I kinda like Webb a little. Think he's got some upside, but a long ways to go, at least two years away,at minimum.
I'm weary on Webb cause he comes from the same system as Goff. That Air Raid or Bear Raid thing makes me a bit nervous. Never seen good QBs come out of that system.
Same issue i have with Mahomes
EDIT: I really wanted Goff last year and seemed to be fooled on him. If he really turns it around this year, maybe my mind will change about guys from that system. But he looked Shell Shocked and Completely Unprepared
I completely understand where you're coming from, I have the same concerns. At the senior bowl though he didn't look completely lost in Hue;s offense, which helps alleviate some of them, not all, but some. So far from where he was at the end of the season to now he's cleaned some of his footwork up and showed at the senior bowl there's a chance he could learn to play in a pro style offense. Still got a ways to go but improving.
Pitt had some good schemes against good teams. Who is their coach?
Runs too much for my liking. A bit short for my liking. Saw him bail on a couple throws and throw it up for grabs.
Good arm, good enough, it would seem.
Great instincts, he has some Brett Favre in him.
Throws with anticipation.
He doesn't hitch before his throws and when he does it's abbreviated. short choppy hitches, some guys like Mahommes have that exaggerated hitch that takes so long.
He could win on a good team. I like him. He beat the champs, makes him hard to ignore.
I really like this guy, but I've seen him listed as the #5-7 QB available. I've seen him taken in round 3 some mocks.
I really like him.
But since we're being mean to Mitch Trubsiky, we should also ask why Peterman couldn't beat out Joshua Dobbs at UT.
I don't know the answer to your question, but I don't think Peterman is being discussed as the guy we should take w/the first overall pick or even the 12th overall pick. Besides, I bet Dobbs makes an NFL roster, which Williams has been unable to do.
No, he's not. But this is the guy, who if we want him, we might have to spend a late 2nd, early 3rd for. I think he deserves a lot more discussion because he could be such a diamond in the rough.
I like what I saw of the dude, but I wouldn't spend a 2nd on him. I was just throwing his name out there because he impressed me at the Combine and then I watched some tape....and I was surprised at how good he looked. So, then I looked at the online reports and they seemed favorable.
I was hoping we might be able to draft him later. Like in the 4th.
Peterman is just another QB being pushed up the draft board because of the NFL's lack of QB talent ... JMHO
