Well, let's see how it goes.

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/house...9--finance.html

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans on Monday released their long-awaited plan for unraveling former President Barack Obama's health care law, a package that would scale back the government's role in health care and likely leave more Americans uninsured.

House committees planned to begin voting on the 123-page legislation Wednesday, launching what could be the year's defining battle in Congress.

GOP success is by no means a slam dunk. In perhaps their riskiest political gamble, the plan is expected to cover fewer than the 20 million people insured under Obama's overhaul, including many residents of states carried by President Donald Trump in November's election.

Republicans said they don't have official estimates on those figures yet. But aides from both parties and nonpartisan analysts have said they expect coverage numbers to be lower.

The plan would repeal the statute's unpopular fines on people who don't carry health insurance. It would replace income-based premium subsidies in the law with age-based ones that may not provide as much assistance to people with low incomes. The payments would phase out for higher-earning people.

The proposal would continue the expansion of Medicaid to additional low-earning Americans until 2020. After that, states adding Medicaid recipients would no longer receive the additional federal funds Obama's law has provided.

More significantly, Republicans would overhaul the federal-state Medicaid program, changing its open-ended federal financing to a limit based on enrollment and costs in each state.

A series of tax increases on higher-earning people, the insurance industry and others used to finance the Obama overhaul's coverage expansion would be repealed as of 2018.

In a last-minute change to satisfy conservative lawmakers, business and unions, Republicans dropped a plan pushed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to impose a first-ever tax on the most generous employer-provided health plans.

Popular consumer protections in the Obama law would be retained, such as insurance safeguards for people with pre-existing medical problems, and parents' ability to keep young adult children on their insurance until age 26.

This is a fail. It does nothing to address the high cost of healthcare. It is just the ACA with lipstick on it instead of fees, taxes, and fines.

Total fail.

Someone had to take the stand and I'm glad it was Republicans.

Getting rid of the need to buy health insurance is pretty neat though. I never liked the idea of having to pay for health insurance at such a young age. Although I wouldn't be opposed to paying higher taxes to get health insurance from the government.

From NPR;

Under the proposed bill, tax credits would start at $2,000 a year for individuals under age 30, rising to $4,000 for those of 60. The proposal, first seen in Feb. 10 draft of the bill, has been criticized as too meager to cover the full cost of a health insurance plan that provides full benefits.

But the proposed tax credit could potentially pay for insurance that protects only against a catastrophic health event.

They would begin to be phased out at incomes of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for families.

To encourage people to buy coverage, the plan allows insurers to charge a 30 percent penalty to people who let their insurance lapse, and then try to buy a new policy.

In states that expanded Medicaid, people who are eligible can continue to enroll until January 1, 2020, and those states would continue to benefit from the federal government paying a greater share of the health costs of those beneficiaries.

The bill includes a couple of provisions to please abortion opponents. Tax credits won't be available to pay for insurance policies if they include abortion coverage.

And the bill "defunds" Planned Parenthood, meaning it bars Medicaid from paying for health services provided at the clinics. Medicaid is already barred by federal law from paying for abortions and women's health advocates say the provision will likely make it harder for low-income women to get birth control, screenings for cervical cancer and mammograms — which Planned Parenthood provides.

Several taxes contained in the ACA would be repealed at the end of this year. These include taxes on health insurers, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, and a tax on high-cost employer-sponsored group health plans (aka Cadillac plans).

An analysis by Avalere Health and McKinsey of an earlier draft of the bill, which contained many of the same provisions, concluded that it would lead to millions of people losing coverage.

The plan offered by the House Republicans falls short of the outright repeal that has been demanded by more conservative members, including those in the House Freedom Caucus.

That could be due to the shift in public attitudes toward the ACA in recent weeks.

Public opinion has grown more favorable as major changes appeared imminent. A Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll in late February found 48 percent having a favorable opinion versus 42 percent viewing the law unfavorably. Kaiser says the shift is due largely to a change in the view of political independents, among which 50 percent now view the law favorably.

We will have more on this story as it develops.

I would like to know more about this 30 percent penalty as I get dropped every single year and have to find new insurance every single year. How do they determine if someone "let their insurance lapse"

That's another problem, why is it they can just drop you if you're paying your premiums.

That's another thing I'd regulate out of existence.

And one last question. Before I ride Trumps butt too hard. There was talk that the GOP had a bill. Then there was talk that Trump had his own bill.

So is this bill put forth by Trump, or the GOP, or both?

I think we will find out the next coming days.

I think if this makes it pass the house, the senate will pass it.

From what I can tell, this is an outline of the Paul Ryan bill. Rand Paul went up banging on the door last week and wanted to see the bill that was in the house. According to Paul and his caucus, there is still too much in this bill and his posse may want more cuts before they would pass the bill

In 40's defense, the term Obamacare Gone was used in the article.

And I do think that the posts in that thread should've been blended with this thread.

There were links I was gonna click on that are now gone.

At this point in time Bernie's balls look bigger than Trumps, because Bernie at least tried to lower the cost of healthcare with that importing meds bill.

And calls for Single Payer.

This is just one of many regrets Trump will deliver for his supporters. He is just a flaky blowhard man child. He has no clue how any of this works yet promised the moon and stars to his supporters. He may not achieve a thing in his term, other than making us look very weak and in crisis.

Price caps does, and that's something that's once again missing.

Is that like a taboo topic or something? Like.,you almost never here politicians talk about that here.

Bernie wants to negotiate pricing with big Pharma like the rest of the world, cut out the insurance middleman, and reduce overall cost. He also called for a prevention first approach to medicine which has worked well in other places.

Just cutting out the insurance thumb in the pie will reduce costs by 20%-30%.

I think its because the healthcare lobbyists are slipping money into their pockets.

When this latest bill fails, Trump (or whoever) better man up and slap some regulations on these companies.

I'll be getting my Sheldon Cooper on and mounting an email campaign to my senator and congressman informing them of my displeasure with what they've put forth.

This isn't a repeal, and it isn't a free market solution like we were promised.

This is another glaring reason for term limits.

Not single payer? Yes it is. The government would manage payments like medicare. The insurance companies take about 30% of every dollar to manage it (profits and payroll), the government manages medicare for 7%-8% of the total funds managed. They expect the expansion to everyone might drive that down to 5%-6%... Single Payer.

You would not pay an insurance premium, but you would pay a tax. This premium for tax exchange would save most people money.

Currently the US is not allowed to negotiate lower drug prices under law.

Single payer wont help. Insurance companies dont add in nearly the cost as does big pharma, medical equipment companies, and healthcare providers. Single payer does nothing to drive down those costs. Nothing.

Single payer provides zero benefits. It just forces your neighbor to pay for your insurance.

I think you are confusing two concepts.
1) Government managed health insurance
2) Regulations and price caps.

There can be #2 without #1.

The free market can work fine if the government put on them price caps and regulations similar to Canada. Then we wouldnt need to import meds from Canada or have medical tourism.

Anyways, its kind of pointless to discuss this with you because there never will be a fringe socialist president or congress.

I doubt he read it also, partially because it was locked in a basement in the House.
And also, it looks like the House repubs wants to vote on the plan before the Congressional Budget Office does a review of the cost of the plan, the total add/deduct on the deficit and the impact on how many people will gain/lose healthcare.

It also looks like the freedom caucus is not on board with this plan and there are 4 or so who don't seem to want to vote for this in the senate.

Damn well better be a draft. Remember how bad it was for Bush when he was floating that little ol' lady for Supreme Court, and when he was floating that amnesty thing?

GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN.

I wanna know why they even released this thing without his having read it? Why go through all this trouble to draft a bill, only to have it be vetoed?

This will cost the right seats in the house and senate if they don't get this right.

They've had one campaign slogan for the last how many years?

I agree. They should have just let it fail and have every American screaming about having to pay 10's of thousands of dollars for their healthcare. Then replace it.

I want to see what this bill actually does before I comment on it. Thus far ...I don't know. I think that they have to have all insurance companies available insurance in all 50 states, all across the country. I also hope that this plan offers a wide range of coverage options. Maybe they get those necessary young people if they offer lesser coverage options at a much lower cost.

2 of my biggest problems with the ACA were that competition across state lines was more limited than encouraged, and that there were really poor options available to many people.

I want to be able to sit down and go through this before I make ant real strong comments, one way or the other.

I think best case scenario for a bill would allow people to buy into medicaid, allow people to choose to be uninsured, and to keep patient protections like pre-existing conditions.
