Browns to release Robert Griffin III - NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...ign=Twitter_atn

One day after making a trade to send Brock Osweiler and a 2018 draft pick from Houston to Cleveland, the Browns are cutting Robert Griffin III.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the team is trying to shop Brock Osweiler. This will give Cody Kessler a chance to start, Rapoport added.

RG3 was due a $750,000 roster bonus on Saturday, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported.

Around The NFL will have more on this story.

Maybe they didn't see the progress in his last couple starts this year that ED and some others did ... smile ...

Is it official or just more speculation at this point?

I just posted this in another thread but:

I sure hope this doesn't lead to using the #1 pick on a QB.
I'm afraid with all the OL help in FA, and now this were going to blow this draft with a #1 QB. We need Garrett at #1.

thanks RG3 for at least not allowing us to go winless.

cause lord knows McCown and Kessler couldn't pull it off this season.

It seems that we will need to sign a veteran presence. I would be OK with a Ryan Fitzpatrick type backing up Kessler and if that doesn't work out we have ammo to get one of the QBs coming out next year. Seems lik ethere could be a good group in the 2018 draft.

Yep !! It was all Kessler's fault that we stunk it up so bad. Any 3rd round QB with no 1st term reps in preseason, thrown onto the Browns team last year would have won a lot more games. I expect if we had drafted Wentz we may have even gone 16-0.

If this means they have to use another Charlie Whitehurst type, even for 5 plays this coming year.

I mean they couldn't keep anyone healthy, they need all the options at quarterback that are better than absolutely flawed, available to them.

750,000 dollar roster bonus, iS A TINY AMOUNT to save, even to claim you saved money.

This move lacks wisdom. This doesn't make any sense, unless?

Unless the goal is not to improve the play on the field.

Even if they could time warp, and they were going to select " Andrew Luck, or Eli Manning" with this first overall pick, it still doesn't make sense, because the time to cut a player is in August,

NOT MARCH 10TH.

AND NOT TO SAVE 5 MILLION OR MORE IN A ROSTER BONUS, BUT A 750,000, of a Quarterbacks salary.

I don't like it, wish I could, But I just know, HECK WE ALL KNOW
Somebody's going to get injured, somebody else will get injured
and somebody named John Doe, will be starting a game for the Browns, It happens way too often.

(Austin what's his name, or U.Connecticutt guy, or Penn State guy.) Maybe "Acile Tyree" .

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Kessler's reluctance/inability to go deep is a huge problem. That has nothing to do with preseason reps. Hue game planned around his limitations, but that will only work for so long. Kessler could grow into a viable backup, but if you're counting on him to be the answer, you're going to be disappointed.

Then I don't consider it a no brainer.

I'd say this was hue doing RG3 a favor so he gets a chance to sign elsewhere. Lot's of QB hungry teams out there right now.

IMO, we will end up with a vet, Kessler, and a QB from rounds 1-3

we're gonna put two QB's on the market. rg3 is out, and soon Brock.

teams sign those two, won't draft Watson or Trub. i think those 2 might fall to the 12th

Since I've seen so much stupidity posted here lately, I'll add to the pile...... Please remember that this is pure satire. lol

I think this means the deal for Jimmy G. has been finalized and a long term contract with him has been worked out in principal. It won't be announced right away but why else would we be shopping BO and cutting RG3?

It MUST mean Jimmy G. is coming to town!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

swish, your dreaming if you believe any team is going to sign BrockO. or RG as their starting QBs...both are backup material.

I think I like Kessler more than most. But that doesn't mean I am not aware of areas that he struggled with. Throwing deep was one of the biggest issues - along with the arm strength to zip it into tight windows/out routes etc. To me it was perplexing that he really didn't even take a shot downfield.

But he was a rookie - he had Cam at center for much of the time he was playing. He had pressure popping up and got hit a lot. So I can forgive him some of those issues.

On a pretty bad team with the worst preparation you could imagine - he was accurate, 65% - he was poised and didn't look like a deer in the headlights - showed toughness (more than I would like) .... and looked in my opinion, cerebral. He didn't look like Dak, or Wentz or even Siemen. . . . but he showed me enough that I think it's not unrealistic to *hope* he can be more.

Do I want him to be our starting QB week 1? No. My top choice would be Garoppolo. My next choice would be Cousins. My next choice Trubisky selected at #12. . . . . but if the choice is Trubisky at #1 or Kessler. I'd be okay with rolling with Kessler and drafting Kizer, Peterman or Dobbs in round 2.

Me too. The Browns get nothing by cutting him now. They are giving him a chance to sign on with another team while GMs are still shopping for QBs.

WHen Hue said "we'll work with until we don't" was a pretty clear cut case RGIII wasn't going to be hanging around much.

There's a market for QB though, some team will present another cheap contract to acquire him I'm sure. I was never a fan of the signing in the first place.

It was a terrible signing from the start except in that he was just a body to throw in there in what we knew was a garbage throw-away year.

It's also worth noting that releasing him, even with there being QB hungry teams out there, doesn't affect the market for Osweiller. As bad as folks may feel Osweiller is, I think he's far and away a better QB than RG3.

J/C .... as far as the financials, it seems to me that we save his $750K roster bonus and his $6+ million salary.

With rumors that we might eat half of Osweiler's salary to facilitate a trade floating around, that could be the trade off to cover much of that.

Also, it's clear that they didn't think that RG3 was going to be what they hoped me might be. If they has any hope that he would be a high quality starter fr us, he would have, at least, made it through training camp.

Also, maybe another team signs him to start for them, so they don't have to overdraft a QB high in the draft. That might push a guy we like down to #12, or maybe even to #33.

I like RGIII. Just not as a QB. He was worth the gamble. Too bad. Good luck Robert.

I think one of our problems has been inconsistency between starting Qb and back up. I think RG3 needs an offense tailored to him to have success and while a guy like Kessler may be able to run, I don't think they fit the same style of offense. I never figured out how Hoyer/ Manziel, Manziel/McCown or even RG3/ McCown could have worked well as I see each set as QBs with pretty different skill sets, or at least different recipes for success

I think we have some classic quotes for the ages from the last 24 hours.

Not only is this one from Hue a classic. . . . what about “We’re really excited to acquire a second round draft choice in this trade,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. (cut/paste from the Browns official web site).

We've got the ammunition to do about anything in the draft we want. Won't be surprised to see Garrett at one and a QB shortly thereafter. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me to see Kessler start and be backed up by some washed up vet or another..

+1, JMHO, all logical, RG3 was just to brittle, I think we draft a QB after number one pick, Garrett or attempt to trade for one...time will tell...RG3 tried, thanks....GO Browns!!!
