Another Browns OL move: the team has claimed former 49ers C Marcus Martin off of waivers, per source.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think our OL was an area of weakness according to the fO

Had alot of talent coming out of USC...had to red shirt his rookie year because of injury...probably just a body bit would be something if the lights come on

The former third-round pick started 24 of his 26 games over three seasons with the Niners. Martin only played in five games last season before being placed on the injured reserve. In college, the lineman started 33 starts over three seasons with USC.
Martin will now serve as a backup for center J.C. Tretter. Tretter signed with Cleveland today on a lucrative three-year deal. After missing more than half of the 2016 season, Tretter will need a quality understudy. The Browns may feel they have that with Martin.

Awful. Useless signing, IMO.

Awful. Useless signing, IMO. ??? don't know was that sarcastic?
We signed the best Center but there has been brought up concerns of injury. We claim a guy which means we aren't using a lot of money on him. We got a reliable replacement just in case we need him. Reiter is still here - recovering from IR and one game??? Martin gives us a little more insurance...we could cut the kid if Reiter beats him out but what if he is pretty decent.
I just don't see the word "USELESS" in this.

The guy is claimed with 1 year remaining on his 3rd round contract. It's a cheap signing that could provide depth to the O-line. What's wrong with that? Nothing. Great idea to bring him into camp and see what he's got. If he's a negative, cut him. No big deal.

It makes Cam Erving completely expendable. We have zero reason to keep him on the roster now.

I think that we should come up with a couple of quality players there.

Yeah I am thinking that we made try and trade Erving now. Who needs a Center?

...Maybe we'll try moving Erving back to defense. He arrived at FSU as a DT. An attacking defense where he doesn't have to think could perhaps minimize his issues.
I wanted Dupree over Erving in the draft, but I did think Erving would pan out better than he has.
I think Martin is mainly insurance for injuries.

It was a good signing. We signed the best FA C and we got a very capable back-up just in case. We've had a lot of injury problems the last 2 years on the o-line and I feel our FO has addressed the problem admirably especially at center.

This claim likely means nothing. If he's good, we got him for nothing. If he's bad, we release him for next to nothing. No risk.

I agree. We now have at least 3 guys who are better at center, and I have no hope he can be a RT. The Ray Farmer era is about over.

J/C I am just wondering if this is a reflection of Reiters + Greco's current health/ rehab. If not,it is a camp body with experience to snap to Tribisky!!

my guess is greco is not progressing as fast as hoped .. it looks like he's our sixth OL, which fits him well

neither does anybody else haha Cam will compete at OT, his more natural position. Just finished reading 3 blurbs from the Browns websight on the )-line. Martin, former 3rd round pick, 70th overall, made 24 starts for the 49ers, 22 starts at center. Tretter, (the'starter'),former 4th round pick in 2013, started at center for Green Bay in 2016, has 31 games--with 10 starts, all starts at center, other time Lg,Lt,Rt, both same size^^. For Right tackle, the article says Browns have options including Ausztin Paztor, who started 15 for the Browns last year at RT, Which is a free agent, listed on the roster, meaning? Do the Browns want him? Shon Coleman and Cam Erving, both first round picks by the Browns shared time at RT, in the Browns finale last year, it appears. If I recall correctly from the radio broadcast, One was in there, then the other, then the original again, then the other. Kevin Zeitler, fomer 1st round pick by the Bengals, has been good for them,-- Is a rare find. Reiter, was found, and injured after 1 game. Which to me says he's a non factor. I don't automatically see that Tretter should start over Martin, but that's what we read. Browns just re-signed Joel Bitonio, with talk of him at left guard. With Tretter, Marcus Martin finaly answers the question, "who's our back-up center?" Spencer Drango is a back-up guard. John Greco has played most of the time he has played, at left guard, I think. Everything is getting solid, except RT. Austin Paztor started 15 games there last season, Cam Erving, and Shon Coleman, couldn't either one stay in for 1 half of the final game last season. Browns are letting Paztor sit there listed on the roster as a free agent. Those last 3 things tell me, the Browns don't want any of them and they're probably going to look for a new RT. So. My guess is that, Coleman, Erving, Alvin Bailey, Reiter, Jonathon Cooper, and Austin Paztor, will be Gone by the 53 man roster cuts, If the Browns draft a promising RT.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Reiter, was found, and injured after 1 game. Which to me says he's a non factor. It was a knee. That kind of injury can happen to anyone, and in the interior OL is more a matter of being unlucky, and being hit the wrong way, as anything else. He looked very good in his only start. If we are going to damn players for being iujured, then we better toss Greco, Bitonio, and Tretter, along with Reiter. I don't automatically see that Tretter should start over Martin, but that's what we read. Tretter is the starter as of now. Could that change in camp? Sure. However, right now, I believe the battle is for backup Center, not for the starter. Browns just re-signed Joel Bitonio, with talk of him at left guard. He has played LG for every snap he has played for the Browns. John Greco has played most of the time he has played, at left guard, I think. He originally started with the Browns at LG, but moved to RG 3 years ago when we drafted Bitonio. My guess is that, Coleman, Erving, Alvin Bailey, Reiter, Jonathon Cooper, and Austin Paztor, will be Gone by the 53 man roster cuts, Since Cooper has been gone since late last season, I would say that you are right about him. I think that Bailey is in trouble. I don't know why you think Coleman will be gone. I think that he stands a good chance of being our RT. (and we can help him in pass pro, with a TE and/or a RB, because the rest of the OL will be very solid) Reiter looked very good last year. I think he has a chance. I think that Erving could be in trouble, but who knows? Pasztur is not signed right now, so he's not on the team right now.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I would take our future RT at 12 if we don't end up trading for a QB. There isn't a whole lot of RT talent in this draft IMHO so after that you might as well just roll with what we already have.

Taking an OL at 12 in this draft would not be BPA or anywhere near IMHO. I sincerely hope we don't do that.

Unless it's a tackle/depth draft pick in the mid rounds, I'd be surprised if we didn't go heavy on pass rush, DB, and offensive play maker

Odd you would get this wrong??? Shon Coleman was not a first round pick - he was the middle of our 3 3rd round picks last year.

PFF 1 Year ago; Dud: Sophomore center Marcus Martin was a liability throughout the season. His work in pass protection was poor, but it was his performance in the run game that was a true mess. Sounds a lot like he is describing Erving. I don't think that Reiter was given competition for the backup center position with this transaction. It does however afford us another someone, as so to give him extra rehab time if he is not ready for the OTA's.
