ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office has authorized a domestic violence charge against former University of Michigan football player and projected top round NFL draft pick Jourdan Lewis, according to court records.

Lewis is accused of assaulting his 20-year-old girlfriend, Ann Arbor police Detective Lt. Matthew Lige said.

Police were called to Lewis' residence in the 3000 block of Signature Boulevard about 1 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, for a domestic violence call, Lige said.

Lewis' girlfriend called police and said there had been a physical altercation at the residence, according to Lige. Officers initially were unable to determine who was the responsible party at the scene, he said.

"It wasn't clear to the officers (Wednesday morning) if there was an assault, or who the aggressor was," he added.

Subsequent investigation led to a misdemeanor assault charge against Lewis, according to Lige.

The Ann Arbor Police Department submitted a report to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office Wednesday morning. Charges were authorized by 4 p.m., according to records.

Lewis will be arraigned through the 15th District Court at an unknown time and date. Misdemeanor offenders usually get notice through the mail and come to "walk-in arraignments" at the court.

A two-time All-American corner from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Lewis was the Big Ten's defensive back of the year -- and a consensus All-American -- as a senior in 2016.

As a junior in 2015, Lewis set Michigan's single-season record for pass breakups. His 45 career breakups are a Michigan career record.

Lewis was at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis earlier this month as he continues preparations for the NFL Draft. Analysts have been mixed about his projections so far. Most have him going anywhere from rounds two through four.

Ugh.

Damnit.

Really wanted him.

Guess I'll get to watch him play in Cincy twice a year.

I'm confused...initial reports from police who responded they couldn't determine if there was an assault and if so who initiated it/or was the agressor.

Then later on its determined he was to be charged???

I as cause obviously this can ruin his life or monetary status.

Does anyone know if this has happened with him before.

He just shouldn't have CHEATED on her...lol laugh

It's sad that somebody would want to control you so bad they would ruin your life over it.

Not sure I understand your point?

In my opinion, the same thing is true about Johnny Manziel.

I ain't blaming either the men or the women in either case. But, when you are in a relationship and there are reports of domestic violence and the police are involved...........that sure sounds like a toxic relationship to me......and one I would not want to be involved in.

Yea, the moment charges start coming, it's time for both people to end that relationship, and move on.

I wanna clarify my earlier points on those two ending their relationship, just because I know some people misunderstand one's intent on here.

In no way am I blaming any of the parties. I am not blaming them because I do not know the truth.

What I do know in the case of Lewis and his girlfriend and also w/Manziel and his woman......the police were called w/allegations of domestic violence.

Many victims of abuse or terrible relationships often feel like they don't have a choice. They are victims and are at the mercy of the one they are with.

I think we do have a choice. For example:

--I know that my wife would have left me if ever even once would have physically abused her. No doubt about that. She would not tolerate such a situation.

--I know that I would have left my wife if she ever falsely accused me of physically abusing her.

People who abuse others do not deserve to be in a relationship. People who falsely accuse their partner of physically abusing them do not deserve to be in a relationship.

We have choices. Choose wisely.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Stories about what happened during an alleged domestic violence incident between former Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis and his girlfriend, his accuser, differ, according to the police report.

Ann Arbor police were called around 1 a.m. on March 15 to the 3000 block of Signature Club Boulevard in Ann Arbor for an alleged domestic violence assault. Lewis was later charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic violence and arraigned on Thursday. He is due in Michigan's 15th District Court on April 12 for a pretrial hearing.

Lewis and his accuser agree, according to statements taken by police officers, on these details: Lewis was asleep when the woman returned home around 12:30 a.m. and found him sleeping in bed with the light on. An argument ensued and Lewis threw two pillows at her. She demanded an apology, based on statements given to officers.

Lewis, according to the statements, went to the closet to get dressed. The woman said he was "punching the door from inside the closet," and she went to the closet to make sure Lewis was not damaging the door. Lewis, meanwhile, told police he was trying to hold the door shut and get dressed so he could leave the apartment.

The woman said Lewis stepped on her hair "at some point" and dragged her across the living room floor but was unsure how she was dragged. Lewis, meanwhile, said the woman forced open the door and hit him in the face. He said, however, he was unsure how the alleged victim struck him.

Lewis told police he was trying to leave, but the woman wrapped her arms and legs around his leg to stop him. Lewis said he tried to get her off of his leg several times on his way to the door, before getting free and leaving the apartment.

According to the report, the woman said Lewis "grabbed her by the neck and held her down on the floor for about three seconds. [The woman] demonstrated a cupped hand motion around the front of her neck." She said Lewis then left the apartment and called her "a b----" on the way out.

Lewis told police "he may have grabbed [the woman's throat] while trying to get her off him" but did not intend to hurt her or assault her. He said he was just trying to leave.

In a follow-up interview, Lewis' accuser said she grabbed his legs once, at the closet, and "struck/pushed Lewis in the chest." She said she was not trying to keep Lewis from leaving when he allegedly grabbed her throat. She also said Lewis did not try to strangle her or squeeze her by the throat, but "had pushed her down by the throat."

Police saw no visible injuries on the woman's neck, either at the time of their initial report or on March 17, when she went to the Ann Arbor Police Department for injury photos. Those photos showed two scratches -- one on her nose and one near her left thumb.

It wasn't the first time police were called for an incident between the two. According to the report, police also were summoned for an incident between Lewis and the woman on May 5, 2015.

As part of his bond in the most recent case, Lewis has been ordered not to have any contact with the woman. He is allowed, though, to travel outside of the state without prior permission -- which will allow him to visit potential NFL teams that might be interested in drafting him in April.

Lewis is expected to appear at Michigan's pro day on Friday. He is thought to be a mid-round selection in this year's NFL draft. A 5-foot-10 cornerback, Lewis was named to various All-America teams in 2015 and 2016. He holds Michigan's single-season record for pass breakups with 22 in 2015 and was a two-time All-Big Ten player. He was a finalist for the Thorpe Award last season.

This is a different situation than the Mixon incident. Lewis was at home, asleep when she came home. She woke him up. What followed depends on who you ask. The force used was minor (as in no visible injuries), not a punch that broke bones. This reads like a classic "he said, she said."

To answer Eo's question; in the City of Cleveland, and I suppose most places, if the police can't determine a primary aggressor, find no visible injuries, and the story is a toss-up, they will make a report for each, naming the other a suspect. They are both misdemeanors so it's up to the "victim" to follow up. If she went to the prosecutor and pressed charges, there will be charges against him based on what she said. He can do the same against her. Just because charges have been brought, doesn't mean a court will convict him.

Past Garrett, I have no clue. The range of scenarios boggles the mind.

I don't know what really happened, but I think it is apparent those two individuals need to end their relationship. Sounds toxic.

Wait a minute....what about the modern concept of friends with benefits...especially when there children involved...just because the cops were called doesn't mean you end a "real, healthy, relationship"...if it feels good, must be OK....maybe normally she likes being slapped around, then changes her mind....important thing is he's a good football player who just lost millions...that's the important thing...on a football forum....GO Browns!!!!!
