Our boys basketball team just won the regional finals game.
That means they're going to state. Final 4, div. 3. That's kinda cool.

I should also add this: Wauseon, a member of our league, the North West Ohio Athletic League (NWOAL) is also in the final 4 in division 2.

Wauseon won today which puts them in the finals on Sat.
We're heading down in the morning to root, root root for the home team. The Archbold Bluestreaks vs. Cincinnati St. Bernard Roger Bacon in D. 3 semi finals. We'll possibly have our hineys handed to us.
Daughter had her second scrimmage (softball) tonight, against Bowling Green. First at bat, Sooga took one on the hip. Off to first she goes. After the next batter, she ended up on 3rd.
Next batter dribbled one to the pitcher, and Sooga was caught too far off 3rd. Run down. She made an effort, but decided to just go home. Catcher caught the ball (Sooga was going to be out by a good 3 feet or so), and just as Sooga started to slide, the catcher put a "tag" on her unlike any tag I've ever seen in my life.
Literally punched Sooga in the face (in softball, batting helmets have a face mask, similar to a football helmet). As Sooga kicked her leg out to slide, the catcher way laid her in the face. I saw the helmet face mask smash into my daughter's face, and the next thing, daughters head was bouncing off the field.
Sooga got up and walked to the dug out. I didn't say a word, but started walking to the dugout as well, figuring she'd be bleeding, maybe missing a tooth or 2.
She was fine though. Laughed a little, had a tear or 2.
And the B.G. coach came out of their dugout and chewed the catchers tail end off about her "tag". "No need for that!!! None!" Kudos to him for telling her that.

Yup. Roger Bacon shellacked us. We had about 5 turnovers in the first 4 minutes. They were quicker, faster, taller (although not taller by much, truthfully) They won, 68-43 if I remember correctly. I've never seen our team play this poorly, which leads me to believe we didn't play "poorly", Bacon made us play bad. Kudos to them. In the earlier D 3 game, Clev. Villa Angela-St. Joseph apparently demolished their opponent - score was 73-40. Both Villa AND Bacon could've won by much more. I'd have loved to stayed the night to watch the finals tomorrow at 2 pm, but, we didn't. Should be a good game? My bet is on VA-St. joe.

Dunno if it's good news or not.
I got my daughters brand new iPhone 7's today. They been begging for them, and I had originally told them I'll buy them phones once the school year ends and they come home with excellent grades.
Well today they used a sob story about some kid in school and how he couldn't contact his mom when he got lost.
I #triggered me, so I got them new phones. I just finished asking them about the kid.
.....they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about.
So I just got played.

I love this weekend.
I've been slammed this year with new responsibilities. I put together a yearbook for the school, helped co-advise our senior class to fundraise for a trip to Hawaii (We were successful...those who helped get to go...as I do to!), started grad school, organized a school exchange trip between our village and Sitka, Alaska, and did all my teaching responsibilities.
What's happened in the past two weeks: -Booked everything for Hawaii -Finished up the first yearbook for our school in at least a decade -Sitka teacher and kids came here, and then we traveled to Sitka last week -Knocked out a 10 page paper on the importance of involving the community and the school together in planning a curriculum -Poured 20 hours into reading scholarly research articles and then planning a paper to write on the articles -Wrote a 15 page paper on the importance of place-based education with the topic I researched -Taught research papers -Still taught and worked in the span of all that
Results: -Successful school exchange -Finished both classes with grades higher than at 95% -Enjoying this first free weekend in over three months
Future: -Going to Hawaii in three weeks -Spending the summer in PA and Ohio with my gal

High school softball.
The Archbold Bluestreaks fell tonight, in league action, 6-1. That puts their league record at 6-1 also. Good enough for a guaranteed co championship with Bryan (a team we bet 9-0 by the way), or POSSIBLY, if Bryan were to lose its last league game, a straight out championship.
The bigger news is, that breaks a state record apparently. Crestview and Archbold had been tied as far as consecutive league championships. (yes, co champs count). Crestview is in a different league. Each had 11 straight championships. Archbold now has 12.
Young team - they start 2 freshmen, 3 sophomores (daughter is one of them) 1 junior, and 3 seniors.
They've done so much better than what was "expected" at the beginning of the year.
(and on a sidenote - yes, being a parent on the sideline, in softball or volley ball - causes much more stress than being the player on the field/court. I know this. I was a player - different sports of course - and I am a parent now.)
Anyway, thought I'd share that.

What kind of materials do you use for finish? Be sure to post pics when you get done!

Dang. The guy reach out and touched it.
No NO. Plus, that deer was too close for my comfort, if it was a wild deer. 1 swift kick could kill you. Add in that a deer's jaw/mouth is powerful - very powerful.

Yea, I wouldn't let it get that close either. I have to admit I have never seen anything like this with a wild Deer. Might be nice having him come up to lick the barrel during Deer season, when those antlers are developed.

Many, many years ago, before they wiped out the WFMJ (IIRC) broadcast antenna, and destroyed a lot of nice wooded area by Boardman Park, and turned it into a shopping plaza, I used to love to go hiking way back into the woods.
The one day I was by a dry river bed, and I was having a rest on this big rock. I'm sitting there, and this deer comes walking out of the woods. Beautiful animal. He looks at me, and I just stayed still .... so he must have figured that I wasn't going to kill him. We were there for probably 5 minutes before he went bounding off.
Really cool experience. Man, I hadn't thought about that in a long time.

Nature in general is cool. And cruel.
Few years ago, during bow season, I had a deer come in behind me. I was up a tree in my self climbing stand. Sat right under me. (okay, so, about 2 yards behind me. And when I say "sat", I mean it laid down.)
It was there for a good 45 minutes, waiting for the "right" time to go into the field to eat. It wasn't a big deer, maybe a 2 year old. I waited on other deer to come into the field. Didn't happen.
So, I stood up in the stand. Turned. Deer didn't move. I took it.
Another time, during black powder season, I was sitting on the ground. Huge dead tree behind me I was leaning against.
I'm not kidding, out of no where I heard a thunderous roar. I was sitting, on the ground, just feet from a field. BAM - no, not me shooting - somewhere between 30-50 deer had been spooked and they were flying. I didn't even have time to get my gun up. Heck, about 10 of them jumped over me. And it took about, seemingly, 3 seconds in total. Those things can run. I'm just glad they thought I wasn't "ground".

My twin grandchildren will be graduating over the next two weeks. My Granddaughter goes to the local high school and my grandson is in a special needs school. Both were born pre-mature and my grandson being the smaller of the two was in intensive care for two weeks and almost didn't make it.
My granddaughter is going to Eastern Tennessee State majoring in psychiatry. I have no doubt in my mind that she found this as her calling because of her twin brothers issues. But my grandson isn't a quitter. He will be going to a vocational school for special needs people to learn something in regards to automotive skills. He will be tested there and he could be learning anything from detailing cars, small engine repairs to oil changes. How far he can go depend on his abilities to learn those skills.
Nothing could make me happier than seeing these two grow to be the best they can be. I'm a very proud grandpa right now!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

My good news...my folks flew in this morning and are in town staying with us for the next 10 days. I haven't seen my mom and stepdad since September of 2015. Missed the hell out of them. Now I get great house guests and mom's home cooking for a brief window. Couldn't be happier.

Wouldn't it be ironic, if one if those deer had kicked you in the face? Hard enough to kill you, I mean? I wouldn't want to see it happen, arch, don't get me wrong...

I don't know if this story is really true, but I remember way back in the day, I was at Salt Fork Lake and heard a story about a guy who caught a bluegill. It was a small little bugger and the guy was drunk. He held the fish above his head, opened his mouth, and was joking about eating the fish......when all of a sudden, the bluegill shook itself free from the hook, went down the guy's throat, and he choked to death because they couldn't pull the fish out of the guys throat due the fins.
I know this kinda weird, but I always admired that little bluegill.

My bad, sorry Arch. Was in a testy mood last night and your anecdote struck me the wrong way. I shouldn't be so judgemental - I'm not an idiot, I understand that deer hunting isn't a bad thing and is in fact, necessary. It was a knee-jerk reaction on my part, with the emphasis on 'jerk.

Quick update on softball.
The team with very low hopes (low hopes from parents and fans. Apparently not from the team) due to new, young players, not only won the league title for the 12th consecutive time - thereby setting a state record for consecutive league championships, well, that team also went on to record the schools 12th consecutive sectional title.
Sooga finished the regular season batting .339, with only 4 strikeouts in 62 at bats.
After the sectional final game tonight, she dropped to .329. She had a sac. bunt, a strikeout, and a ground out - but she did reach first on an error on that play. Not a stellar night for her, but it was for the team.
And on a side note, my niece (1 day older than my daughter) - set a league record that had stood for 33 years in the 400. Time of 58.05. She finished 4th in the state last year - as in, state finals.

I remember yrs. ago we went to Canada to fish for the week-end. I'm not a fisherman at all, but I caught what they told me was a sun fish. Prettiest fish I think I ever saw. I was going to throw it back, but some guy told me to throw it on the pile with the rest of the fish. That night we cooked 'em all up and some guy brought me a plate over to eat, and on top was that sun fish. I could still see the rainbow colors on the meat. I don't think I could eat it even then.

Been looking at colleges and universities with my son, who is a junior. He has narrowed it down to six schools all in the PNW. Furthest away is 7 hours by car, closest is right here in Portland. They range from small progressive liberal arts colleges to the larger more traditional University (UofO). Super fun, intriguing and exciting to tour the schools. Off to another next weekend. The aim is to narrow it down to his top 3 and then get on with applying/FAFSA before Thanksgiving. We are visiting them all now as we want to see them during the school year with the students still on campus. Of the 6 we will only have to see one during the summer when it is quiet. The scary part is the pricetag that comes with all of these schools! None are private and 3/6 are instate yet, they are bloody expensive! Even the out of state are part of the Western Univ. alliance, which means we pay a shade over instate but, still....HOLY COW! But hey, they all have a pool, a gym and some even a rock wall that they are excited to show us on their tours!

Got both Son and Daughter home from college, well for a week or so anyway.
Daughter made dean's list and was voted the outstanding sophomore for the school, her internship report was passed from professor to Dean and to the provost of the college. after two years she is a rising senior, saving us about 40,000. She took 21 hours last semester and worked a part time job
Son, almost made deans, frankly we are happy he made it through, not the student my daughter is, but its all good.
Both have summer jobs in their college towns and will do some night classes, so the effort is there, who says these young 'uns are lazy
We are blessed.

I'm going to give props to arch. Most of you know that he and I fight all the damn time. But, out of nowhere...he sends me a pm the other night to ask about my son.
I thought that was pretty impressive. I'd say him being a caring person is worthy of a "good news" post.

Maybe...LOL. A few would have some 'splain to do. I better edit that before people take it too literally. God knows I saw that earlier tonight. Thanks to the refs for deleting that mess and I apologize for my role in it. Anyway...........Pit is one of the guys I fought w/the most on here. I wanted to kick his ass. Then, I notified the board about an upcoming surgery I was going to have at Vanderbilt Clinic in Tennessee to remove a tumor from my carotid artery. Freaking Pit PMs me and suggests meeting because he lives in the area. We met and I had a great time. I won't speak for him about what he thought about the meeting....LOL.....but, I thought he was a really good guy and it was quite eye-opening at how a message board isn't always the best place to judge people. Tone of voice, facial expressions, intentions, etc are not identified and the intent of the message is often lost in translation of the written word. I know sometimes I am joking around and laughing my butt off and people think I am dead serious. So...........perhaps we should all follow this advice:
