If just one of those regimes had lucked into a franchise QB, this conversation wouldn't be happening. It's easy to be critical in hindsight, but at the time, Savage was a hot front office candidate/talent evaluator. tried BQ but it didn't work out.
We've bombed out not only on crucial first round picks, but our track record second round and beyond has also contributed to our team... just being what it has been.

And then when it all fell apart. He quit.
Oh, I'm sorry.
He had health problems.
Butch's health problems surfaced much later while he was coaching in the college ranks.,

“I left a great great job (at Miami) to go to Cleveland to work for Carmen Policy, who had won four Super Bowls, and Al Lerner,” Davis said. “We go to the playoffs my second year, Al Lerner dies of brain cancer and the son (Randy Lerner) takes over and fires Carmen — complete culture change.
“The son tells me, ‘We’re no longer doing this my dad’s way.’ His father told me, ‘You got 10 years to turn this franchise around.’ The son says, ‘We’re not doing one thing the way that my father did.’
“We just went to the playoffs six weeks ago. He says, ‘You’re $33 million over the salary cap; you got five weeks to get under.’ The only people that you can cut to get under the salary cap are the guys that can play. … Who were the most pissed off (players)? The kids that had to stay, not the guys that lost their job. The kids that had to stay because they’re like, ‘We’re going back to being like an expansion franchise; we got no chance of winning.’ I just don't remember it coming down that way., I remember Davis bringing in his own Puppet GM and putting us in CAP hell in the first place in an effort to win quickly and he did. Nope, I don't remember it this way at all.. Both versions are incorrect. Policy, who was very close w/Lerner senior, knew that the latter had brain cancer, and he and the Browns decided to bring in a lot of free agents and spend a lot of money in an attempt to win it all for Al. I don't remember Lerners health being discussed at that time, but I suppose it could be... Just don't remember it that way.

who decided to ever play Doug Pederson? Was that Palmer
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

who decided to ever play Doug Pederson? Was that Palmer Palmer had Ty Detmer. Figured that if they were going to lose anyways. Might as well play the rookie. Then going into (what would've been) his third year, they asked him how many games he thought they'd win, and he said "5 or 6". Had he said "7 or 8", he might not of been fired. (This is what, Pluto says in his book "False Start" anyways)

Davis had his Garcia (not the QB the guy who held his briefcase)
Davis seemed to depend on his HS scout book (it was black) in a lot of his draft picks.
Heckert...won't get in a tit for tat. But I thought it was established that Holmgren forced the issue for both Trent and Weeden. To go against the Scouts reccomendation.
Anyways...love our current Organization...just hope they can continue without Friction.
Clark/Policy was doomed and went down in history as one of the worst 2 years of drafting.
Butch/and his black book. Not much success at all the only accolades was in year two with a team built on FA pick ups and we were 33mil over the cap one year later and had to dis-ban that team.
RAC/Savage...RAC bent over backwards to make it work but SAVAGE got power hungry and that was that.
Mangini/Kokinos...so great on paper and the worst ever pretty much the point where Randy threw up his hands and say...I quit.
Then the HOLMGREN Czar thing came - shame if he really cared and worked hard we could have made it happen. He seemed to treat it as a paid vacation...ce la vie...
Banner...and the new owner. Banner always considered himself the owner and that was short lived.
Pettine/Farmer in the after math never seemed like a good fit. The in fighting was at its worst.
HUE Jackson...the first HC that we got that was considered the cream of the crop. The Harvard Crew of Sashi, Berry and DePodesta see like a good fit as it stands...hope they can keep it real and make it work!

Maybe I'm not remembering this right. I thought Policy was asked why he fired Palmer and he said when they sat down to discuss the future Team, He asked Palmer what he would change to better the Team. The Answer? Not A Thing. That's the reason I remember.

RAC had no clue how to make a decision. When you have to flip a coin to decide who your starting QB is, it's time to go.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Butch was a great game coach, not good at building a team, but was the best so far by miles ahead of the others.
He went down with Couch....

That's the reason I remember. Haven't read the book in years. (It's a solid read though) But Pluto may have been inferring a bit. I dunno. I just specifically remember the part of them asking Palmer how many games etc.

RAC had no clue how to make a decision. When you have to flip a coin to decide who your starting QB is, it's time to go. Or get a real QB...

was the "coin flip" to determine Quinn vs Frye? I can't even remember
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Quinn/Anderson I think.
He just went with Frye.
Benched him halfway through the first game.
Then we traded him two days after it.

It was for the first pre-season game that year. We simply disagree on that ddub. I believe that a HC should be a leader and be decisive. I would never believe a good HC would flip a coin to make any decision.
