1 of the top FAs -- #Giants DT Jonathan Hankins -- has tried for weeks to beat NYG's standing offer. Hasn't done it yet. They want an answer

Jimmy Garoppolo - QB - Patriots

The Cleveland Plain Dealer considers the Browns unlikely to trade the No. 1 overall pick for Jimmy Garoppolo.

We would certainly hope so. A "league source" speculates New England is still seeking at least two first-rounders. Even with their nearly unprecedented draft resources, we're guessing the Browns would pass on that, as well. Garoppolo is a former second-rounder who simply hasn't put enough on film to command that kind of draft haul. He's also no spring chicken, turning 26 in November.

The Cleveland Browns have signed K Brett Maher

Maher spent past three seasons playing in the CFL

Maher is 6-0, 186 pounds and is officially entering his first NFL season out of Nebraska. Originally signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2013, Maher has spent time on the rosters of the Jets and Cowboys. He has spent the last three seasons playing in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Redblacks and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Last season for Hamilton, he connected on 41 of 50 field goal attempts and scored 161 points.

Bradley McDougald - DB - Free Agent
The Browns hosted free agent SS Bradley McDougald.
With Derrick Kindred and Ed Reynolds currently sitting atop the depth chart, the Browns need help at safety. They missed on Tony Jefferson in wave one of free agency. McDougald is a 26-year-old box safety with man-coverage experience against tight ends. He's been a starter in Tampa Bay the past two-plus years.

Quote:
Bradley McDougald has been an inconsistent player for the Bucs, but the high points of his performance are very good, and if a team can iron out the bad, he could be a very useful player. McDougald is extremely active, having made over 75 solo tackles in each of the past two seasons; he also has 13 pass breakups over his three-year career.

Jets sign Josh McCown

The Jets have a quarterback.

Josh McCown and the Jets have agreed to a one-year contract, his agent announced on Twitter.

At the moment, McCown would appear to be the Jets’ starter. They only have two other quarterbacks under contract, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, and neither has shown anything to indicate that he’s ready to be a starter. McCown isn’t exactly a franchise savior, but he’s a competent veteran who can hold down the fort and help Petty and Hackenberg develop.

The 37-year-old McCown started three games for the Browns last year and appeared as a backup in two others. He threw six touchdown passes and six interceptions and had a passer rating of 72.3.

And I hope there is still a place for him on the staff when he retires. I think he has excellent coach potential.

They could pay McCown another 7 million in bonuses.

If they make the playoffs.

Had Kap just been a dude who was an iffy QB he probably would of been signed by now as at least a backup.

He'd probably improve our team by one or two wins. I'd definitely take him over Kessler. The off field stuff is definitely hurting him.

We shouldn't just sign any QB, but we definitely need a veteran so that we aren't forced to start whatever QB we draft if Kessler gets hurt (or to start over Kessler).

Malcolm Butler - DB - Patriots

CSN New England's Mike Giardi reports the "parameters of [a] deal" between restricted free agent Malcolm Butler and the Saints are "mostly in place." Giardi adds the two sides are still "quibbling" over guaranteed money, but it sounds like the Saints and Butler will be able to work out a deal. The problem is Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots will not discuss a potential trade until Butler signs his first-round tender, and the Saints are not going to sign him to an offer sheet which would cost them the No. 11 overall pick. While it remains likely Butler ends up in New Orleans, there are still several hurdles to clear.

seems like that was always going to be the case ... so the Pats basically traded Butler and a pick for Gilmore and Cooks

What's the reasoning behind trading Butler? Is it just that they can't re-sign him after this year?

Yeah he can almost buy an apartment there for that.

Jets play and practice in NJ...pretty high property tax though as the Dems control that state (not Chris Christy).

Jets invested n Two 2nd round QBs. Is McCown there to tutor them? This FO has to win or else get fired...and yet they cleared house. Mangold, Marshall. If they got the vote of confidence from the Owner...they will take the first QB in the 2017 draft...hope its Watson...lol laugh

I believe we cut him before he ever played a game.

McDougald, the safety that we brought in for a visit, signed with the Seahawks.

Stephone Anthony....

I know he's not a free agent but the Saints brought in A.J. Klien and Manti Te'o, and I know he didn't play well last year. But he did have a very good rookie year. Could play middle LB for us. For the right price....

Mike Triplett of ESPN singles out former first-round pick Stephone Anthony as a player who could use a change of scenery.
Anthony took a step back in 2016 and has changed positions without producing great results.
According to Triplett, if Anthony doesn’t make big strides in 2017, his future with the Saints will be in doubt.

I think Kirksey will be MLB and that'll be the end of that story. Perhaps on clear rushing downs, we'll see Davis in there.

I agree with that. I think a bigger thumper or enforcer at MLB would be the ticket.

Valid point. I can see him fulfilling that spot too for the reason you mentioned, he's good covering in the open. We'll see how Gregg decides to utilize him, but something tells me it'll at MLB.

I think in todays NFL, that is a bit over rated. As long as they can find the ball, fill the hole, and make the tackle, I am good with that.
