I suppose you could make an argument either way, get what we can for him and move on, because we know the history, or give him a 7th chance.

For me the risk/reward is enough to give him a 7th chance.

I'd like to keep him for at least a year hoping he performs well and stays out of trouble. Just enough to get good value in a trade. As soon as he gets a big payday, the stupid will return IMHO.

Why are some people ignoring this?

Quote:
Gordon has at one advocate in Berea in advisor Jim Brown, who helped broker his conditional reinstatement last year. But head of football operations Sashi Brown and coach Hue Jackson don't appear ready to go down this road again.

"On occasion I would check in with Josh just personally because we care for the young man,'' Sashi Brown said. "But beyond that we really haven't sat down to talk about what it would be like if he gets back in or even taken the time to understand exactly what that would look like. That's a pretty complicated process and we've got a lot of guys to focus our attention on.''

When Gordon left the team last year, Jackson made it clear the team was closing the book on him, and he's not believed to be interested in opening it.

"He's not reinstated yet, so I think it would be premature to get in any discussion about that,'' he said at the combine. "I'm sure we'll deal with it in the future when the time comes."

Why are you continuing to participate in a discussion that you have already stated is a waste of time?

Why do you care? (Just jabbing you there...so you can relax.)

For me, it's the last paragraph in your post. That leaves almost nothing to discuss at this time. This leadership team does not air out their dirty laundry in public...there are virtually zero leaks. We only have their direct quotes to go on.

I think they will carry on as if he'll never return...I think they made up their mind about that last year. Who knows what they might do IF he DOES get re-instated? They certainly aren't giving out any hints on that direct question.

I would give him another chance...but not because I 'love' him or think he will return to his All-Pro self or even because I'm a forgiving person (at times).

To me, giving him another shot is like waiting on a stud player who got injured two years back-to-back...drafting a guy who got injured at the end of his last collegiate season...or taking a flyer on a late round guy. Again...Sashi and Hue...there is absolutely no reason to have Gordon in their plans.

Ask that question IF and When he gets reinstated...I think he will be on our team. He stays clean and our patience gets rewarded. He messes up again...he is out of football I think Forever.

Josh Gordon - WR - Browns

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports "it’s doubtful" the Browns give suspended WR Josh Gordon another chance.
It falls in line with coach Hue Jackson's stance on Gordon. The Browns are expected to shop Gordon if he gets reinstated, but could ultimately release him. Gordon’s status should be known before OTAs.

I have never commented on Gordon.

My attitude toward him: let it play out.

He has hurt only himself. If he is reinstated then he is clean. He is under contract. See what he can do and how he is responding to coaches and teammates.

Then make a decision. No sense in prejudging him. Deal with facts. Include him or move on. But don't throw away talent if he is conforming.

Man, I am just all over the map regarding Gordon. With the way he/the offense played when he came back in the middle of that one year (the Shanny year), it's a difficult to keep him on the roster without hitching your wagon to him. That's how talented the guy is (and secondarily, how little other talent we have). I don't want the team to be in any sort of situation where we're relying on him, but it'll be hard once the season begins and we keep him on the roster (he'll be a focal point of the offense, with not a lot of other proven targets to throw to, in an offense that would like to chuck the ball).

But I also don't like the idea of dumping him. I don't believe we would get worthwhile compensation for letting that talent walk out the door.

I still think the most value to be had from Josh Gordon is to hang onto him for the very small chance that he can pull his head out of his butt. I think it'll be a challenge to make him earn his reps.

Gordon, Britt, Coleman is an extremely solid WR Corp.

Unless Kessler is the QB. Then it doesn't even matter.

IMO that's a really weak WR Corp. For NFL standards.

Not a powerhouse group in my opinion. Maybe with a killer QB they are OK. Just not an eye popping group for me.

Britt as the #2? Coleman as the third (assuming he grows a bunch from last year)? I'd say that's a very good group. Take Gordon out of the bunch and bump everyone up, then yeah, it's bottom of the league.

... and that's, kind of, what I was trying to get at with my previous post. If he keep Gordon on the roster, we are hitching our wagon to him whether we intend to or not.

Just not liking it until I see otherwise. I can only hold my breath so long waiting for his next banishment. If the NFL doesn't let him play, problems solved. He could help us. Just tired of gaming this around.

I don't think the team is planning on Josh ever returning until he's their on Sunday.

That's why I think the Browns will draft a WR with one of the second round picks.

Releasing him would be insane.

He'll just goto a no nonsense team like the Patriots or, way worse, the Steelers and lead the league in receiving.

I'd be ok with trading him for a low pick to some NFC team, but I'd rather just keep him. I really don't see what it hurts if we manage him properly. If we can't manage a diva WR then we need a new coach.

Does anyone remember the last time he came back? We saw photos of how "ripped" he was. We were told by his camp that he was in the best shape of his life.

This year is almost a replay of that year.

Then, he came back and he was said to be out of shape and he dogged it on the field.

He has always had the physical part of the game. His problem is the mental and being reliable. I'd still kick the tires on him though because he has the talent to be worth the risk.

You would give him a million more chances. And you would also cut someone else so meathead could have a roster spot. Then wonder why it blew up in your face yet again when the dumbest man on the planet screws up.... It is meatheads nature to screw up because he is a LOSER. It is his nature to F up. That isn't likely to change. Ever.

I prob agree with you spirit but crazy good talent is worth rolling the dice for at times and half the WR on this roster are a waste of space anyways so its no big deal to make room for the risk IMHO.

If there are 53 guys better than him...I'd release him. However, the chances that our 5-6th WR will be better than him - or a better project - is very slim. For now, rosters are set at 90 guys...there aren't 90 guys on the roster who are better than him.

I don't understand why people get so emotional about it...not saying you are that way. The FO knows who he is...we know who he is...it's a risk they will weigh and we will deal with.

so if I am correct, we still own his rights for TWO years ... it would be dumb to release him IMO. in the small chance that he makes a recovery and plays again, we benefit without any gamble

Yup, it is literally a zero-risk venture for us.
If he gets reinstated, he can come train and workout with the team.... the rest is up to him to earn. If he gets into camp and earns a spot and a role, then why wouldn't we keep him??

Holding grudges for past mistakes is silly - if he can help us, we should let him help us, and all it costs us is being big/adult enough to give him another opportunity to prove himself. If the light goes on for him, he is absolutely everything you could ever dream of in a receiver.... so, you practice patience and try to cultivate that light coming on.

thanks purp, i thought so. I'm not a fan of cutting a guy just to do it ... we have to be smart about upside
