Had a discussion this week with my son about the super groups I had growing up
And I was given pause as to I would want in my group

So I'm an effort to step away from draft\ FO arguments
Here is mine

Lead vocals Doug Gray (marshal tucker) one of the cleanest voices ever

Lead guitar Alvin Lee (10 years aftet) the work on I'd love to change the world is the sound I want

Rhythm guitar Buddy Guy (BBking was a contender) but I like his melodious tone more
'
Rhythm guitar Carlos Santana no one fills the backside like he Dan

Bass Lemmie slit of choices here but listen to DamnationAlley by Hawkei d. This guy can do it all

Drums Neil Pert. Enough said

Keyboards Gregg Allmandont need a spectacular player here but want his voice too

Horns Keith Gemmell ( Audience). Unique sound and hits what I want

Not necessarily the best st each instrument but tougher they would give me the sound I like the most

Who is your super group?

I'd have dr. Dre and timbaland producing.

First verse: Eminem
Second verse : Kendrick Lamar
Third verse: ......don't get mad at me, CHS..... third verse is Drake.

And they can swap orders throughout the album.

Future on the hook.

Drake can go off bro.

and with eminem and kendrick, he only needs to write a verse every track. not carry the entire song.

for me, it was between him or joey badass.

Joey? Now I'm mad. Why not just a real 90's rapper?

Drake is good. His new album is really nice and really bad.

Eminem
Royce Da 5'9
Crooked I
Joel Ortiz
Joe Budden
and throw in Yelawolf.

Rich Homie Quan once punched a bouncer in the face and then fled the scene in a jet ski. J. Cole cures thousands of people a year of their narcolepsy.

Also, a good friend took me to the Drake and Future concert in Columbus and it was a really great show. He really knows what he's doing. Kanye had a more interesting show, but Drake put on a much better one.

Bass: John Entwistle
Vocals: Freddy Mercury
Drums: Neil Peart

An odd mix, but my favorite at each instrument.

Immediately with little thought and off the top of my head:

Vocals: Steve Marriott (Faces/Humble Pie) & Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star)
Lead Guitar: Eddie Hazel (Funkadelic)
Rhythm Guitar: Randy California (Spirit)
Third Guitar/Effects: Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Bass: Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna)
Drums: Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Piano/Keys: Nicky Hopkins (one of the greatest and most respected rock pianists. Played on a ton of records).

I stayed away from obvious like Hendrix, Page, Bonham etc. Also, I like layers thus, the third guitarist for that extra layer of texture and I am a huge Jefferson Airplane fan so I love the mix of male/female vocals.

Yelawolf is garbage. I am not sure why no one likes Royce, I mean he is super nice. Em is pretty much GOAT or tied for the top.

CHS, you tripping about J Cole. Born Sinner is a classic.

It's cool that you mentioned Steve Marriott. That guy was viciously intense, even in the early days of the Small Faces.

As far as rock music super group, there's two that already exist/existed.

Queen, and my all time favorite, system of a down.

Smart man.
No sane person invites such a toxin into his life voluntarily.

I mistakenly saw this thing when it was new... and it made me wish that the internet had never happened.

Marriott is arguably my favorite male vocalist. Such a dude with so much soul in his voice. His flame burned bright. Shame he was overlooked in this country. Legend in the UK. Another guy I will mention is Terry Reid who Jimmy Page initially wanted to be his singer in his new band "The New Yardbirds" who would became Led Zeppelin. But, Reid declined as he was focusing on his own solo career. Superb voice! However, LZ would have been a very different group without Plant. Better? Who knows. It is what it is and history cannot be rewritten. Plant is a solid rock god, though.

I've already seen/heard a crapload of supergroups, just because they were groups, back in the day:

RTF (both quartet and big band)
Weather Report
MJQ
50's/60's Miles Davis groups
Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band
Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble

Honestly, I can't create such a group. Not without severely narrowed-down parameters... and that would defeat the entire purpose of this thread.

I've committed to memory, literally thousands of top-shelf musicians... and to turn that list into a top-5 or even top-20 'superband' is something that would make my brain explode.

I'll respectfully stay out of this convo, and expectantly revisit it for as long as it lasts, because I find this stuff fascinating.

Excellent idea for a thread,
Clemmy.

One thing with Super Groups is they often never live up to their potential or expectation. Blind Faith did one album. Great album but, nothing after it. Humble Pie were also a super group and their albums are solid...in areas they are GREAT but, they are also inconsistent. Live, however, they were a brilliant band.

I think Crosby Stills Nash & Young may actually be the best, in my opinion, of the so called "Super Groups". They recorded two incredible albums (one just as CSN, the other with Neil Young, "Deja Vu") that are start to finish absolute classics.

I saw the original Metallica when I was 14 or 15..."Kill 'Em All" tour w/Cliffy. My dad didn't want to go so he asked a younger guy who worked with him to take me. Some forgotten metal band, Armored Saint opened. Tiny club...the audience was all burly, hairy bikers...serious denim, leather. I may have been the youngest dude. Brilliant.
