How are we into the 8th inning of a series between two of the top teams in the league and no thread on it?

We are in the 8th inning, tied at 4. Ben Francisco gets a pinch-hit HR to tie the game at 4 in the 7th inning.

Right now, Rafael Betancourt is causing a stir. The Tigers have asked the Betancourt be timed in getting the ball to the plate, and asking for an automatic ball. This, after earlier in the game, Rodriguez asked the umps to watch Hafner in the box to see if he stayed in the box. This feels like a playoff series going on...

Also, Pudge Rodriguez became just the 4th catcher in MLB history to catch 2,000 games in his career. Even though I'm relatively certain he took steroids, congrats to him.

That was pure BS. Of course it took him awhile to pitch it. You can't pitch the ball when the batter isn't in the box. Tigers just lost a lot of respect in my books.

I didn't know we respected ANYTHING from that state up north.

Rodriguez goes to the ump for the second time, tattling that Pronk is almost out of the batter's box. Losing a lotta respect for this team. On the other hand, perhaps they are feeling that desperate against the Tribe (hopefully...).

Betancourt back out there for the 9th, tied 4-4.

Wow, I have not seen such nit-picking by players against the umps, who have been TERRIBLE this game. From Sheffield getting robbed, to all the players complaining about the strike zone, to the umps yelling at Betancourt for taking too long, to Pudge complaining about everything, this has been one of the worst officiating games I've seen

In the bottom of the 9th, two outs, two strikes no less! What the hell is the hurry?

Rule 8.04

Quote:

When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball.
The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire.

The problem, to me, is when they are starting that clock. I was watching the last one, counting it, and it was at 11 seconds from when Inge got into the box and set. They can't call that at 12, it has to be after and clearly after, IMO. I hate the Tigers...

Woohoo, gigantic win for us tonight. We are now assured of leaving Detroit in first place even if we lose the next two games. 3 games up!

Huge win, if we can get one more, that would be amazing. That win was as big as a win in game #83 can be.

detroit better win tomorrow if they think they have any chance of winning this series...

the tribe owns justin verlander (2-3 with an era of almost 6) and we've got the best pitcher in baseball taking the mound for the final game thursday

i just got back from my hockey game, i can't wait to see the highlights!

Not complaining about JoBo, but does anyone else (besides me) think the Indians' closer of the future is Betancourt? If he can perfect that change-up, his fastball will look like 99 to the hitters, instead of the 91-92 that he's throwing.

Great win!

i love betancourt, but i think if they wanted him to close, they would have given him the job already...

to be honest, i think he's capable, but not completely comfortable doing it... maybe one day?

i've been saying for 2 years now that fernando cabrera has closer stuff... he just needs to turn that last corner... his stuff is great...

betancourt is an absolute rock though, always there, always reliable, i hope we can keep him an indian for a while...

closer is such a tough spot to fill... you can bring in a guy via free agency, who had a spectacular season the year before, and he can absolutely suck every time he takes the hill...

what was that guy's name in milwaukee that atlanta gave huge money too? dan kolb? huge money, and after like 2 months, they couldn't even use him...

The great thing is we don't have to have another win,...with a three game lead, the worst that can happen now is a one-game lead.

The best thing, to win the next two, would be a FIVE game lead -- now that's doin' something !!

Today is going to be tough with Westbrook going up against The Gambler. Rogers is 2-0 with a microscopic 0.75 ERA. GO TRIBE !!!

Rogers is 16-16 lifetime vs Cleveland, with a 5.28 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP ... we need to jump him early. The bad news is Westbrook is 4-7 lifetime vs Detroit with an ERA over 6 ...

Considering Rogers' rep for doctoring the ball and after the Tigers' attempts to rattle Betancourt, the Tribe hitters should keep asking the ump to check the ball and also to check Rogers' hand and glove for foreign substances. At the very least you mess up his rhythm, maybe even get into his head.

I was watching the game...(kinda...because House was on TV last night. )

But, they were being picky about calls...I mean the Hafner out of the box thing, I mean he's been doing that all year and nobody other than the Tigers have complained about it... And what was the deal with the whole Betancourt thing? I just lost alot of respect for Jim Leyland..

Anyways, GO TRIBE!!

Oh, the umpiring was awful. Inconsistent strike zone. You could send a pitch on the outside corner and have it called a ball. Throw it to the exact same spot the very next pitch, and it's called a strike.

Then the Betancourt thing......I've never heard of it, but apparently it is a rule. But like they said, I've never seen it called. Ever. I'd like to know when the last time it actually did get called.
