Press Conference

A couple of observations;

1) They didn't come out and say it, but I was left with no doubt that the #1 pick will be Garrett by The Browns.

2) They seem to find MKC's obsession with QBs as amusing as I do.

I agree. I finished with the impression that Garrett will be the guy and we don't expect to trade down.

Good press conference though. Although it's clear that Berry, or as Sashi calls him, AB, is not that comfortable with the microphone. Both were well spoken, as usual though.

One other observation, the very last question was from MKC asking "Do you envision trying to trade for a veteran QB?" Sashi looked right at her and his one word answer was, "No."

While I love me some Jimmy G, I think that means that trade, if it ever was a possibility, is dead.

I think everything said this close to the draft is smoke and mirrors.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I liked the joke about MKC, it was the highlight of the presser

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

CHS, @ about 6:00

Someone asked Sashi if he had the Patriots on speed-dial, and without blinking an eye, Sashi said, "Mary Kay does."

Agreed. Only so many guys can make this already young roster. I'm thinking, if anything, we trade up using late picks or trade down for future picks. I think they have an approximate number of guys they'd like to come out of the draft with, but will be a little flexible if they see heavy value

They do have a plans and a startegy though (and they are confident in it). That's just the type of front office we have. Whether any of it works out, that remains to be seen, lol. But they surely will be organized

If you're willing to wait.

A 7th rounder this year can become a 1st in 2023!

First thought I had on this was the same thing MKC just thought it was funny.
But Sashi and AB made me come away with Garrett is the guy...especially AB...the reporter was like huh? and asked the same question again as in AB pretty much said YES to Garrett being our guy.

Sashi was a little more coy with a "we have listened (trade offers) but we like our guy at #1 and will probably stay there." maybe not word for word but close.

wink

MaryKay blocked me on twitter for respectfully calling her out on her love fest for Trubisky and Garappaolo (sp?).

So I know she was fuming when Sashi called her out. lol.

Year after year, she is infatuated with the QB of the hour. I think she had a schoolgirl crush on the HS QB and she never got over it.

It looks like we are staying at #1 unless someone calls with a ludicrous offer. We take Garrett at #1 and we finally have a pass rush. Ogbah on one side Garrett on the other. That's a good start to a four-man front. Of course, if someone offers 3 firsts and a handful of seconds to move up....You can't turn offers like that down. But I don't see a player worth that in this draft. One more week! Can't wait!

I just listened to it. I too think it solidifies Garrett will be ours. AB kind of alluded to that by his facial expressions when he said "but yeah, we do like the player".

As always, they're not going to reveal or tip their hats in these pressers. I did like when Sashi said they're already preparing for the 2018 draft. I did forget that how quick AB, Hue and Sashi's promotion and all that was last year and how little of time they truly had.

Now they've had an entire year and a full offseason. I'm really excited about this draft.

What I came away liking was Sashi's answer to this question:

On how much the Browns have studied other teams’ successful drafts in the past and how realistic it is for one draft to turn around the fortune of a team

Brown: “We are not trying to take some approach where it is this draft or bust. I talked about this when I took over, I think my job is to make sure that our organization makes a series of good decisions. When you do that over time with a good plan, strategy and alignment amongst your staff, you are going to be good in this league. We have seen this in our division. The teams that we play against have all been together a long time and have those systems very right. That is what we are heading towards. This is going to be a draft that moves us forward a lot because we affectively have a double draft in the first couple rounds, and we are also picking high. That said, we also understand we are going to have to develop the players that come in. As we move forward, we will have a draft class next year that will also contribute heavily towards our success long term, and we need to continue stacking successful drafts on top of each other to get to where we need to go.”

LOL,,, MKC asked, by my count, 3 questions. All three involving QB's.. As you say, she is obsessed LOL

Otherwise, I'm not sure what info I gleened that has value.

It does seem to me like we will be very reticent to move back in this draft. I think an offer would really have to wow us

Feels like she writes her stories then searches for quotes to backfill her perspective.

One week from tonight, we'll get a sense of what kind of FO we really have.

Last year, they had roughly 100 days to get the new coaching staff and FO people in place before the draft.

They've said it themselves in the presser that this year, we're together more than a year, they've gotten used to each other, they said they feel more confident in their ability to make better decisions.

So, They said it. So let's see what they got and what they can do.

I'm actually pretty excited. Generally I like how this FO thinks..

Yep, heck they even said they've already started preparing for the 2018 draft. So that means they've exhausted all resources and etc with this one, got ALL their T's crossed and I's dotted, they have a TON of picks and... and well, quite frankly - I'm just excited. We have a chance to really improve our team.

As you just pointed out, the fact that they've already begun work on 2018 is what gives me just a little bit of excitement for this year.

For one, it means that there is no work left to do on this year - the hay is in the barn. Also, however, it means that with us working on next year, we can actually adjust our view of this year based on what our early views of next year are. If there is a position group that is weak this year, but deep next year... then, unless a HUGE value falls into our laps, we know that we can pretty much just skip that position for this year, maybe try to backfill with a free agent later. I believe we've already seen this type of planning used with regard to this year's draft.

All of this is why I think we won't be taking a "savior" at QB this draft. No Trubisky, no Garropolo... if we take one, it will be a later round developmental guy with the brains to have a shot at being a player. We'll play to the strengths of the draft and it'll be easy to do because we have holes everywhere.

I don't think that's what he meant. I believe he meant that he/they (AB & the scouting dept.) were more comfortable this year than last, and that while there were at the pro days, they had the opportunity to scout some of the guys that would be coming out next year instead of needing to concentrate solely on the talent available in the upcoming draft.

Right or wrong this FO sounds most prepared toward their agenda since Banner and before that most likely Butch Davis.

One other thing to note, sorry if already posted, nothing is leaking out. No one outside of Berea has a clue what Sashi and AB are doing. Heck, no one can give an absolute who Cleveland is drafting first!

Anyone who listens to the NFL on Sirius know this already. Analyst/hosts constantly poke fun any move Sashi performs. Well, actually they give DePodest, Money Ball/Baseball guru, most grief.

Of the 3-5 teams needing a QB, Cleveland is the most needy and a must trade up and get a QB. These same people later state QBs this year is a riskier pick than last year. Unsure why it is a must for Cleveland!

I guarantee Browns receive an "F" if they don't take a QB in round 1. These same people will praise Pete Carrol and Reggie McKenzie for their draft. Funny, Browns are following a similar path!

This is exactly what I've hoped to see all along. We are a young team at an early stage of development. Seeing how they used the FA market to fill some holes on the OL shows me they knew the upcoming draft. Both its strengths and weaknesses. If they follow that path into the draft it seems to me that it will be D heavy with maybe a RB added somewhere. I'm sure there will be deviations from that to some extent but I do believe it should be the focus.

That would ease some tension for me.

I think all teams do that. When a scout is at a game or watching film they aren't JUST looking at players eligible for the upcoming draft. They are also scouting underclassmen. Anyone that jumps out at them is then on their radar....
