Poll: One-third of Republicans say press freedom 'does more harm than good'

About one-third of Republicans think freedom of the press does more harm than good, according to a new survey.

A new poll from Vanity Fair and "60 Minutes" finds 36 percent of Republicans think freedom of the press "does more harm than good," compared with 13 percent of Democrats who feel the same way.

A majority of Republicans — 61 percent — think freedom of the press is "necessary."

Eighty-six percent of Democrats feel the same way.


The poll also finds that 93 percent of respondents prefer to get all the facts when following the news, while just 6 percent prefer to be entertained.
Thirty-three percent of respondents say television news is the most accurate and honest news source, compared with 23 percent who say newspapers are the most accurate and honest news source — just 5 percent say the president is the most accurate source for news.


President Trump often criticizes the media, accusing reports of biased and dishonest coverage against him and referring to some networks as "fake news."

Those are the same Polls that said Hillary would be President in a landslide.

I am all for freedom of the press of course but I don't think they should be free to promote propaganda and become their own political party, as we have seen this election.

Just report the News please.

But yeah, Republicans have been going crazy on the Press. Julian Assange is a straight up garbage person, but he's not an American nor has he been on American soil.

I also don't get why DJT is suddenly wanting to prosecute people who leak things to the media. Quite frankly, it's in the citizens best interest to have a transparent government. Leakers and the media help do that, as the gov't fails to.

Also, the idea that we have press freedom, when most of it's owned by a group of people, is hilarious.

Without knowing how the question was worded, I can't say whether I agree or not.

Freedom of press doesn't do harm... But poor journalism that doesn't report the facts and even worse the click bait stories are awful...

And yet it was the Democrats that actually tried to pass legislation that would ban anything that they deemed "fake news".


Like DC said, I wonder how the question was worded, but I do think there needs to be some sort of accountability as to what the Press can do. People are just fine with throwing up all kinds of regulations and restrictions against the ownership of a gun, second amendment be damned (and I'm fine with some of that) ... but then those same people are okay with media outlets running completely uncontrolled. Some acting like straight propaganda machines and others just outright lying. If anyone calls them out on it, they dive behind the first amendment and scream that you can't touch them.

Every anti trump rally goes off without a hitch ... the last two or three trump rallies have had organizers of the "we love everyone party" plan a rally to conflict with the event planned by the trump supporters and it invariably ends up in fights and arrests ...

Clearly one side is trying to shut the other one down and to silence them ...

Do you think its harder for Republicans to claim they are against the Confederacy or that they are pro-women? Which lie is harder to lie about? On one hand, you have 1000 slave owners, and their monuments sticking out of the closet. On the other hand, Fox News can't have 6 months without firing a major person in the network over repeated sexual harassment claims.

Trump says he may break up 9th Circuit Court after rulings go against him

President Trump is considering breaking up the 9th Circuit Court after a federal district court judge in its jurisdiction blocked his order to withhold funding from "sanctuary cities."

In a Wednesday interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump said "there are many people who want to break up the 9th Circuit. It's outrageous."

In the interview, Trump accused liberals of "judge-shopping" for a court that would strike down his executive order.

"I mean, the language on the ban, it reads so easy that a reasonably good student in the first grade will fully understand it. And they don't even mention the words in their rejection on the ban," Trump said.

Trump claimed the court oversteps its authority and that his opponents "immediately run" to the court for "semi-automatic" rulings.


The 9th Circuit earlier this year blocked Trump's executive order that barred immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries and banned all Syrian refugees from the U.S. for a period of time.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump railed against the 9th Circuit over a judge blocking his order withholding funds from sanctuary cities.

If Trump decides to move forward with plans to break up the court, he'll have Republican support. Earlier this year, Sen Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) voiced support for breaking up the court, which is seen as one of the most liberal in the country.

On Tuesday, a federal judge rejected Trump's order to defund sanctuary cities, arguing that the White House had overreached with requirements not related to law enforcement.

Congress has been talking about breaking that bunch of flamers up for years now. I hope they do it. They are unAmerican, anti Constitutionalists.

The Supreme Court reversed about 70 percent of cases it took between 2010-15. Among cases it reviewed from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, it reversed about 79 percent.

Proof they're unamerican?

I haven't seen any evidence of that.

Having the Supreme Court throw 79 percent of your decisions in the trash is proof enough.

Or is that just proof of the system working as intended, as our founding fathers wanted?
