Instead of doing the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, my family is thinking of doing a short trip this year for Thanksgiving. Have any of you done anything like this...for Thanksgiving? Ideas of places to go, things to do (for 4-6 adults)? Any input will be greatly appreciated!

In 2005, I went to Las Vegas. One of the best vacations I've ever had. The temperature was 75 F everyday, and dipped to 52 at night.

Never went away for a major holiday.
My step-mom mentioned last month that she wants up to go to Florida with her and my dad next year for Christmas. I really don't want to go during that time. Christmas is one of those special holidays, especially when you have kids. Next year, she'll be old enough to know what Christmas is, and I don't want to take that away from her. So if she brings it up again, I'll have to say no.

I traveled to Key Largo for a couple of Thanksgiving vacations prior to leaving Ohio. I took my sister and nephews with me. Scuba during the day, tequila, lime chicken for Thanksgiving dinner. We camped at a little private campground with a pool, play area for the kids... and a grocery and liquor store near by for the big kids. Scuba and a beach within a few minute drive.

Seriously if you love camping, ( and I know Dawgmichelle does), camping around late November is awsome, days can be warm 50's nights around the camp fire in the 30's, tress are past thier fall peak, but still awsome. It's bow season so were in the woods all the time anyway.
Were closing on a seasonal lot at a local camp ground in the area today, we purchased a 1999 fleetwood prowler 37 footer, with a 40 X 15 deck, fire pits the works, heading out this weekend, lots of work to be done on the site, before we move in for the remainder of the summer.
Already have the spot picked out for my Browns flag

I've done the Medina/Cleveland, Chicago and cruise Christmas in my lifetime. And the winner is the cruise. You still get that wintery X-mas feeling the weeks leading up to December 25 since you're in the cold and seeing all the decorations. And then you're in warm 80 degree weather, drinking a margirita and thinking about what food to stuff yourself with at the next meal. AND my family always made a pact to not buy any presents for each other...that the time we spent on the cruise was the gift.
You won't miss having your own X-mas tree, the 90-min drive to Aunt Betty's house in Berea, the long boring conversations with you drunk Uncle Jimmy and all that time shopping for meaningless presents.
Trust me......try it out. I know its harder with kids but they'd like the break too.

J/K thanksgiving memories, one of my best, i was about 12-13 stayed at my grampa farm house, we woke up to the smell of warm apple cinaman muffans, only to be told we had to do our chores first, in 2-3 inches of new snow. We did our chores, came in to muffins, hot chocolate bacon, eggs, and than went deer hunting. We came back around 3-4 oclock, and had turkey, everything was homemade, biscuts, potatoes, watched football while the adults sat around the table talking, we camped out on my grand parents floor that night all wrapped up in sleeping bags & blankets and it sonwed and was cold outside, I always call that my hillbilly holiday, but that is one i'll never forget.

I know for a fact Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday....from dove hunting with dad and gramps, to smoking up the bird, to Lions football games, the kids, aunts and uncles, a morning round of golf with the kids at the club....good stuff.

I love Thanksgiving too, it's my mom's favorite and we always have a great day.
We went to Florida once for Thanksgiving. The whole family went. We had a huge apartment type room in the hotel so we could make the feast, which made it a lot like Thanksgiving at home, only right on the beautiful ocean! It was fabulous.

That sounds like a great time.
Something about that Florida breeze in November that sticks with you...the sound of the palms rustling, the sound of the ocean, the smell of the salt air...and the unusual feeling of a warm comfort as opposed to a cold north wind.....a strangeness that is always welcome that time of year.

As it should be....one day Granny won't be around and then there is nothing you would rather do than break bread with her and Gramps.

Amen to that... someday God willing, we will all be the old grannys and grampas.. and how would we feel if our family considered visiting us "a chore" or a nuissance? Enjoy them while they are here...

I dunno, I enjoy Christmas. I look forward to my girl opening up presents and running to the Christmas tree. I can go on a cruise any time.

I agree, I might consider a Christmas cruise or vacation when the kids are older, but not when they're still young enough to be awe struck by it all...

Exactly.
That's why I'll have to tell her that we're not interested in going.

ClayM57 ---- just finished reading your great post about your favorite Thanksgiving memory. It sounds like a perfect Thanksgiving day; everyone should be so lucky to have that kind of memory. I've had some great Thanksgiving days too, but really enjoyed reading your message.

Thanks, we always refer to that year as our Walton's thanksgiving,/ hillbilly holiday, it was kinda funny how the whole thing came about we stopped over to gramma's the night before and dropped off some food for her to cook, we werent gonna stay just drop off and head home, we lived about a half hour from them, well mom got busy in the kitchen helping gramma, us kids hung out outside, & ended up watching Tv and my dad & gramp took stock of the homemade wine in the basement, well before we knew it it was 10:30 - 11:00 dad couldnt drive, mom still had stuff to cook and didnt wanna leave gramma with all the work, so we stayed, and the rest well it as we call it A Waltons Thanksgiving...LOL
we've had our share of holidays to forget, cousins missing supper becuase they were in jail....Uncles getting drunk and pissing everybody off, people left during dinner....but hey more turkey for us.....

Sounds more like a schemed plan rather than the act of drunken fools.

I lived in a family of women. Of the 32 cousins in my grandparents direct family on my mothers side, there are 4 boys...and 2 of them were my brothers. It got to where they would just throw us guys to the back porch with a table and platters set-up along with a couple of the girls(to act as spys I say)....it wasn't pretty....by the end of that meal there wasn't anything but dry plates and dry bones.

Thanksgiving 1998, my late friend Joe and I flew to Houston Texas and had dinner with an old friend of ours and his wife and family. It was 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky that day. We had deep fried turkey, smoked brisket, and Jack Daniels Cherry Drops. What a wonderful holiday that was.
