Any fans of this series of books? I grew up on it. The man took FOREVER (not George R.R. Martin forver, but a long time nonetheless) in between books for a while there but his accident (hit by a van while walking) scared him into finishing it all.

It's fresh in my mind because A) I'm rereading it for the first time and B) there's a film adaptation out this August. The trailer dropped yesterday.

I LOVE this series. King got kind of wack-a-doo with it and the ending is kind of lame. But I started reading the thing in Junior High and had to ride it out and take whatever he wrote as gospel.

I am livid over the film adaptation. They Hollywooded it up for all the non-readers when it could have been done as a tv series. The story is SEVEN novels long w/ a side novel and some short stories as well. The people behind it came up w/ a lame excuse to change things but I won't get into it unless anyone actually says they read the books.

So anyway, anybody read it?

This is, hands down, my favorite book series of all time.
I first picked it up back in the early 90's, but never fully read the entire series until just two years ago, and just finished "The Wind through the Keyhole" this past fall.

I so loved this series that once it was finished, I IMMEDIATELY began to read every last book of his that is connected - and that is a LOT of them, including "It" which is also getting released as a movie this year.

The changes from the book --- yeah, there is a LOT there that I'm not happy with, but I'll accept it as the way Book 7 ends allows for it, as, afterall: “Death, but not for you, gunslinger. Never for you. You darkle. You tinct. May I be brutally frank? You go on.”

p.s. despite everything they've changed to "Hollywood" this production, I *WILL* be there the night it opens. No way I am missing that!!

I read it years ago. I really like anything King, but talk about dragging out the story. I read about 4 of the books and then lost interest after the accident and got tired of the dragging of the story, it just never ended and I think that it ruined a good book.

The "Roland has the Horn", this is acutally a SEQUEL to the books, future-cycle excuse is just unacceptable to me. That is such a lame cop-out in my opinion.

I'll end up watching it, but feel bitter, jaded and am kind of hoping it tanks so they don't get to make any more. brownie

It needed to be a tv series like Game of Thrones on HBO, Netflix, whatever . . .

It is a bit of a cop-out, but it also gives them the ability to bring it to the screen without having to try to exactly replicate *EVERYTHING* in the books, which even with modern CGI and film making techniques, would be nearly impossible. And, I'm sincerely hoping that they get to make ALL of the movies (especially "Wizards and Glass" and "Wolves of the Calla" - I wanna see Blaine the Train :D, and because of how it "ends", they could continually reboot it forever smile

And, it still can end up as a series on cable, though I don't think it would do quite as well that way. A show like Game of Thrones has several interwoven and criss-crossed storylines going on at a time whereas most of the books are more single-threaded the way that Lord of the Rings is a single storyline.... but, I suppose some good writers could expand things a bit.

Also, one other really exciting thought comes to mind with both "It" and "The Dark Tower" coming to the big screen: the creation of a Stephen King Cinematic Universe where you get a Marvell-like series of movies that all intertwine.... all keyed on a single character who is the common thread in everything (along with the Red King): Randall Flagg (Matthew McCougnahey). Given that "The Stand" as well as a couple of other films (and the show "Castle Rock") are already in development, this is a VERY real possibility - especially if Warner Bros. has half a brain.

Also, did anyone else notice that at the start of the trailer (00:40), the framed picture on the man's desk is the hotel from "The Shining", and a rusted sign that says "PENNYWISE" with a couple of floating balloons appears, too (01:30) smile

JC: Saw the trailer yesterday, I've been meaning to try to complete The Gunslinger for the past couple years.

I started it maybe 5 years ago, got about 60-70% through and stopped. Stephen King has amazing stories, but his writing is "slow" sometimes. I just don't need all that description and detail, and it takes a page turner and slows it down too much I think.

I mean, The Stand is my favorite book ever. So I respect the guy a ton. He's an amazing storyteller. But, sometimes his style of writing makes the story go too slow.

Anyway, i'm gonna give it another shot

They are hoping to make that into a tv series. On Hulu, I believe.

That book rocks. And, once again, the ENTIRE thing could have been a tv series. Get them hooked w/ the events in book 1 and 2 and then you could up the budget like they gradually did with Game of Thrones when the story called for more effects.

Not trying to be smart, but do you mean just the first book, titled the Gunslinger, or did you get 60-70% through the SERIES of books, called the Dark Tower? The seventh book also being titled The Dark Tower . . .

I would not be surprised, at all, to also see movies for it as it will dovetail perfectly with the 4-movie epic they are doing for "The Stand".

Ive read almost everything King has published, but I never got into the Dark Tower series.
I tried to, but sci-fi fantasy is not my thing.

I read all seven novels and I love it. I think this new movie looks awesome, I love Idris Elba as Roland, I know a lot of peeps don't like that but whatever.

I like the idea of this being a continuation of the story, mainly because, movies and books are such different mediums and call for different storytelling. I know there are things in the books that I liked, that they will not be able to touch in the movies. But I hope it's good, I'll be there to see it.

Isn't the Gun Slinger the first book? I got through that much in the first book. Not the series. Couldn't even get through the first book, lol. I tried one other Stephen King Book (Besides The Stand, which as I said, greatest book I ever read), I think it was called The Cell or something. Creatures in cellphones. Made it through like the first couple chapters, that was enough

I read a few of King's books. Storm of the Century, Cujo, It and Green Mile.

Once I finish up American Sniper, I always planned on picking up another one of his older written novels. This Dark Tower series seems extremely long, so I may go with a different choice - there's so many good ones to read.

Yes, that's book one. That one is intriguing but not all that. It is the SECOND book, The Drawing of the Three, that got me hooked. Three and Four rock as well. THEN . . . it gets a bit odd.

Yup.... you really have to get yourself to the second book to give it a fair shot!
