Simply put, I think it was a risk worth taking. Equally simple, he'll need to play from snap to whistle in William's defense.

I think we all agree it was a risk worth taking and I think peen your points are spot on. But having played if I'm going to take a play off I'm "belly rubbin" with the OL and reserving my energy not flying off the ball and throwing people like rag dolls only to casually jog because I don't think I'll be in on the play. It leaves your teammates out to dry doing that. Maybe we just differ, no biggie.

I agree. Also they do not play in a vacuum, they understand at that level what the consequences of their getting injured could mean in terms of their future livelihood.

It is a sign of the times we live in.

I agree. It's worth the risk with his upside.

Someone else said it, a player in the 6th round is likely to not make the team anyway. I've warmed up to this pick after Sashi made it clear any flags arise, and it's good bye. I think that was smart on his behalf.

But yeah, nice upside since I've actually watched some video of him and read up.

I'm excited to see what can be brought out of him if he remains with the team. His trench skills are at least very close to Allen. Maybe not as fluid but his punch looks wicked.

Agreed. It's tantamount to a scratch off lottery ticket. You waste a dollar, and usually they are worth nothing ... but once in a while you can make a nice profit

I'm a positive kind of guy...but after watching film on him. Although he "COULD" become an excellent player if he dedicates himself for probably the FIRST TIME IN HIS LIFE.

From what I saw...my hopes are not that high. If he doesn't do the above...I think we will cut him!

I do have a couple of football comments:

--peen, I think you have went off the deep end trying to defend the FO. It's like a personal crusade.

--Personally, I think choosing Brantley in the 6th round was a good choice. He has some nice skills and finding those types of skills in the 6th round is rare. If he doesn't make it......so what?

--I don't like Brantley as a player all that much. He has skills, but he is lazy and I said that before the draft. Heck, the guy even dogged it at the Combine. What's that tell you. He even questioned his own motor....LOL

--He has good quickness and a nice punch, but he doesn't play hard at all. I think he is a long-shot to make the team.

I'm beginning to wonder what is going on... It has been 2 weeks since the draft. I thought there would have been some movement from the State by now. Clear Brantley or prosecute him. The last thing released by the county prosecutor was they awaiting a decision from the State Attorney General's office on whether to proceed or not.

I realize this is not a 1 hour segment of "Law and Order," but the decision seems to be taking much longer than expected.

Court cases cost too much to go into trial for a misdemeanor. Especially when the case is he said vs she said.

As I understand it, he tried to hit her but she was too quick for him.

BEREA, Ohio -- Caleb Brantley, the controversial sixth-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, is eager to prove those who doubt his character are wrong.

Brantley was regarded as a second- or third-round pick in the draft last month, but his stock fell dramatically because he allegedly hit a 120-pound woman in the face and knocked her unconscious at a Florida bar two weeks before the draft.

Brantley is participating in the three-day rookie minicamp that began on Friday. On the advice of his attorney he did not answer questions about the incident.

"I want to do what I've shown I can do and contribute to the team," Brantley said before practice. "Hopefully, everything works out. There's definitely a chip on my shoulder. I'm just going to go out and prove everybody wrong who said bad things about me, said I have character issues and all of that. But I ain't really worried about it -- just ready to move on.

"I feel like I'm a genuine great person. I'm just out here playing football, the game that I love, trying to take care of my mom and my brother. Obviously everyone's got their opinions on social media, stuff like that, but my teammates (at the University of Florida) can speak for that, people who know me."

Reports on whether Brantley has been formally charged differ, but according to a story on Cleveland.com the State Attorney is still reviewing the case.

"It's our job to review the information they submitted and make a formal charging decision," Florida State Attorney spokesman Darry Lloyd told the website.

Brantley knows the Browns took heat for drafting him. He said he wants to show his new employers they were right to take a chance on him.

"I feel like I have a responsibility to come out here and work hard with my teammates considering everything that's going on outside," Brantley said. "As far as the Browns taking heat and everything like that, I really appreciate them taking a chance on me and I just really appreciate the opportunity."

If Brantley is cleared, the Browns might have gotten one of the best late picks of the draft.

NFLDraftScout.com rated Brantley seventh among defensive tackles in the 2017 draft, but Brantley fell like a stone in the draft. He was the 12th defensive tackle drafted with pick 185 overall.

Brantley totaled 59 tackles with the Gators in 23 games in 2015 and 2016. He would be part of a rotation that could give Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams more flexibility to use a four-man line.

"He's talented -- we all know that," coach Hue Jackson said after practice. "The things we're dealing with, we don't want to deal with those things. It's in the judicial system. It will run its course.

"We feel very comfortable about the things we know about the young man. That's why we drafted him. Hopefully everything works out the way we see it has the possibility of being. He did some good things out there today, but he has to make sure everything he does, from whenever that incident was going forward, that he does it the Cleveland Brown way. I think he will."

Executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said just minutes after drafting Brantley that the Browns are conducting their own investigation. He said there is no guarantee Brantley will be on the team.

yeah I think Brantley threw them for a loop when he didn't take a plea???

As for his prowess on the field Deepsouth...good to read you wink

He could be a stud...but he has to work hard, it might the first time he has done so. Conditioning is the first step. HS n College being talented got him there...NFL he's going to have to work his Butt off.

When this kid isn't gassed he can absolutely get after ya like a wild man. And I still stand by what I said.
I have watched this kid play a lot in the SEC. He is a BEAST! When this kid gets in shape....you will see.
If he doesn't he won't make the team....but I feel we got a gem.

I think he was a good pick in round 6. I also think what people objected to was you saying he had a good motor. Most of us who have actually watched him don't believe that particular part.

At times when he is gassed and probably not in shape like he should be in he does look bad. Now when he is fresh and in proper shape be has a high motor and plays like his hair is on fire.
I could be wrong but I feel like we will be pleasantly surprised.

It would be huge for the team if he is not guilty of what he has been accused of, and he can attack his NFL career as just that, his career.

he is like the old windup dogs that would do a backflip. When it does his flip that's it, nothing left in the tank. Brantley's case, once he beats his man, that's about it. He either finishes the play or the play goes away from him but either way, he is pretty much done with it.

Kid has some of the strongest hands (Ogun does as well) you will find and when he gets his paws on the ball carrier its over, he is gonna get slammed. Ogun has a pretty high motor but lacks hand technique. Brantley has excellent hand technique but lousy motor.

One thing I remember about the Williams PC was he stated that he is a motor coach. That he has never had a problem getting people to give effort.

He does have an excellent punch and is very quick off the ball. However, he does not have the strength that Atkins has. LOL......that dude is an absolute monster.

You think? I always saw Atkins as Aaron Donald before Donald. Definitely strong for his size but more finesse and quickness than brute. He definitely is a monster though!

I've seen the Donald comparisons, but he is about 300 lbs and did 34 reps on the bench at the Combine.

Here, look at this and tell me what you think:

The good thing is he'll be rotated way more than at FLA ... one weakness was his motor/trying hard every play because he was out of shape

Going back to read the first couple pages of this thread was fun. The things people say even when they clearly have no clue what is going on.
