What is up with this lack of news? I couldn't find the score of last nights gigantic upset anywhere. We beat Brazil 2-1 and it doesn't even get mentioned? I can't even find a story on ESPN right now. Anyways, congrats to the USA team for clinching a spot in the next round with the big win last night.
Jul 07, 2007 04:30 AM OTTAWA–It's not every day the United States beats Brazil on the soccer pitch.
It's for that reason coach Thomas Rongen called his side's 2-1 victory last night at the Under-20 World Cup a "huge" moment for U.S. soccer.
"I would be remiss to say it's just another game," Rongen said after Josmer Altidore scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 81st minute before a sold-out crowd of 26,500 at Frank Clair Stadium. "As a developing (soccer) nation, for us to beat Brazil ... it's very important to be able to push our country to higher levels."
Altidore scored in the 12th minute and, after Leandro Lima tied the match in the 64th, he took advantage of some slack Brazil defending to lift the Americans to a first-place finish in Group D with seven points.
It's only the second time in nine meetings at FIFA competitions the U.S. has beaten Brazil. Its only other victory came at the Under-17 World Cup in 1989.
"When I was younger we played them and lost to them. I had butterflies before this game, we all did. It still hasn't sunk in yet," Altidore said. "It was a great night."
The U.S. moves on to the second round and will face a third-place team from Groups B, E or F.
As big a win as it was for the U.S., it was a disappointing possible finish to a disappointing tournament so far for the Brazilians, who've won the competition on four occasions.
Brazil, with just three points from a lone victory in three matches, is now resigned to hoping for a knockout berth from third-place teams among Groups A, C and D.
"It's a bad situation," Brazil coach Nelson Rodrigues said through a translator. "The U.S. was a very patient team, not like Brazil.''

Are you seriously surprised?
A. Its soccer
B. Its under 20 soccer
C. Its soccer
It was on ESPN last night, that should be good enough.
I have to go now so I can record the Rock, Paper, Scissors championship on ESPN...
It's the 2nd largest soccer tournament in the world only behind the actual World Cup....which by the way draws more viewers than the World Series, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, and the Stanley Cup combined.

You have fun with that. That gets like what, 10 viewers world wide? Now if you were talking about the Copa America or whatever the hell its called, then yes, no one really cares. But this is the U-20 WORLD CUP. But if you have no pride in your own country shutting down a world power in the worlds biggest sport in the 2nd biggest tournament, then why are you even here?
This kid is gonna be great on the National Team. Donovan and Beasley played in the World Cup when they were 20, so I really hope to see him and Altidore on the squad in 2010.
When will we find out who we play in the next round?
This is the full game highlights from the game against Poland, but it's awesome.
I watched the game as soon as I got home... Unbelievable 2nd goal, incredibly lucky, but Adu has that great presence any team could use on the pitch. Go U.S.A!
Lots of tense moments, Brazil had too many shots in the box at the end. Awesome win though, awesome win.
When's the next game?
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.
The next match is July 11, and what I'm reading on BigSoccer says that it'll be against Costa Rica or Uruguay, but it's more likely to be the Ticos. I hope they put it on ESPN again!
As much as I love international soccer (it's clearly the best), the players are playing with a club at the same time and can't devote their lives to one or the other. They have to play on the club side to get recognized in order to play for the national team.
Making the World Cup every two years would take away from its prestige and would harm the national tournaments, such as the European Championship in 2008. Can you imagine the summer Olympics being held every two years?
Awesome to hear! I hope this shows that US Soccer is improving. After going to Europe for a few months, I got a lot more interested in soccer. I had been to a few MLS Metro Stars Games but they weren't that good. Then I started watching Arsenal frequently. Those guys rock! If you watch a few European Soccer Games and can't get into it, I'm sorry. Cause it's not a bad sport, and those guys are as good athletes as any in any sport. I doubt there's any sport besides like marathon running where you run as much as a Midfielder in soccer.
As I am also a huge World Cup Fan (Always liked that), it's nice to know that I might be able to cheer for my own country instead of watching them lose then cheering for the other teams I like. It was so great when we tied Italy, lol; imagine if we beat them!
Sure hope we finally have a true superstar in Freddie. I've always felt Soccer should be a Spring Sport for kids and we can remove Baseball. (Then again, i've always been a Lacrosse Player as I hated batting when I was a kid) No reason that the greatest country in the world shouldn't have top soccer teams (nor should we lose any basketball game......grrrrr)
PS: Speaking of the United States being the greatest country, my friend said Melissa Ethridge said at the Live Earth or whatever concert lastnight something like "America! What happened? We used to be great!" Well I'll tell you, I love "Come to My Window" but jesus Melissa when did we suddenly not be great. Sure is news to me.......

well, if you made the world cup every 2 years, you would have to eliminate some of those tournaments
but you're right about these professional players, in the european leagues, there really is no way around that...
but hey, lebron plays for the cavs, and then plays national basketball every summer, so it is doable...
i don't think making the world cup every 2 years would take away from the prestige of it, because 2 years is a pretty long time...
ESPN is showing a replay of the home run derby. I know that Uruguay isn't a big name team, but after beating Brazil you would think they would move the game to one of the larger networks. Looks like I'll be watching on SopCast.
No, changing the World Cup would be a horrible idea. It's a long anticipated event and the fact that you only see it happen 2 times per decade is something special. It would lose much of it's prestige and world-wide most people wouldn't be happy. If you really like soccer, then you should know about the European Championships, League Championships, UEFA, etc. There's plenty of tournaments to fill the time between World Cups, but this really isn't even an issue since it will never happen.

I disagree... I can only speak for myself but I still think that staggering the winter and summer olympics was a bad idea... maybe it works for most people but for me, it seems like there is always an Olympics coming up soon.. as opposed to when they used to have winter and summer in the same year, once every 4 years... that was a LONG time between Olympics and I think it was better then...
You make it sound like I was there AGES ago, lol. I only just graduated at the end of the spring term
It will be a lot better now that the new stadium and arena will be open. It was hard to get school spirit when you had to drive 30 minutes to an hour away to see a football game. There's definately a lot to do there as long as you pursue it. Oh yeah, and enjoy the girls . Let's just say, two or three years ago, Playboy named us the second hottest campus in the country .
Lol, sorry about that. I remember you not graduating too long ago, but I made it sound like you attended a decade ago.
And no question about the beautiful women. In the hallways alone of my hotel, some very very attractive freshman girls. I drove up to campus whenever I could just to check the place out, and the sights of the school were not the on my priority list.
Hey, something real quick... Is Pegasus Landing a good first year house? I'm stuck there with a lease, and I've heard it's had a pretty bad reputation. That true?
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.
Bring a bullet proof vest and you should be fine.....seriously.....
In all honesty, try not to walk around at night. There have been at least 4-5 shooting there since I started at UCF...including someone getting arrested carrying an AK-47 last semester. This is mainly due to the fact that it is a big party area. Every year they swear they are going to clean it up and every year they fail. I lived just down the road at U-House (or whatever they are about to change their name to...it was the one right next to the Walgreens)
Yeah, I'm gonna try to opt out on Friday, doesn't sound like a place to enhance my college experience the slightest. I mean, I understand it's Orlando and crime happened, but I've only heard bad things about that place. The $610 a month is enough to push anyone away too, but I still went into it.
I've been looking at other places, Arden and Auvers Villa looked good. I'm gonna try to rent a house my sophomore year, I'll know a couple of transfers into Full Sail that'll need a place to stay.
But thank you man, I appreciate it. Getting back on-topic, I'm watching the gamestats now. We're doing slightly better in possession, First half almost over.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.
Man, I wish I was watching, reading everything about the game gets old real fast. Uruguay has had like 8 shots on goal this game... We gotta tighten up on D.
