My belief is we may be in a Pryor situation.

If Kirksey believes in himself and his abilities, why would he want to sign now?

Pryor played well for one season. He saw that wasn't enough to create a big contract for himself. The answer he felt was to get two good seasons under his belt to increase his value. As much as fans think that's a bad idea, barring injury it makes perfect sense.

Kirksey may easily see the same thing and have no desire to sign a deal now when his value may increase substantially with yet another good season under his belt.

People seem to think negotiations have a hero and a zero involved. Often times that's simply not the case. The player has the desire to maximize his value and teams want to get what they see as value. Sometimes those two things simply don't line up.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Comparing to Pryor though I would just like to say that while kirk has been finally recognized it's not like no one saw this coming. Even when he struggled most of us saw what he could become. That to me translates to the financial side. He is a sure thing. There in no more risk than any player. I think most of you know by now I'm more analytics based and he is the kind of guy you lock up. Little risk and while I think he's pretty much reached his ceiling it's pretty damn high and he deserves a contract. Sign him through a year after collins for a little flexibility and you have a top 5 LB duo for the next 5 years imo.

OFFICIAL: We’ve signed Christian Kirksey to a four-year contract extension!

https://twitter.com/Browns/status/869642832667168769

The Cleveland Browns have signed LB Christian Kirksey to a four-year contract extension.
“Christian Kirksey brings a lot to this football team,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. “He’s another example of a young talented football player that we want to be part of our organization for the long-term. Chris reflects the hard work and commitment we want in our locker room. He has done everything asked of him since he was drafted and has developed into an impact starter. We are very pleased to get a new deal with him in place. We look forward to watching him continue to emerge as a leader of our team and establish a culture of winning here in Cleveland.”
“First and foremost I want to thank the Haslams for this opportunity and the organization for believing in me,” Kirksey said. “Hue Jackson has been telling me from day one that I have a chance to be a great player in this league and for them to offer me this contract speaks volumes. I am glad to be here and to be a Brown for a long time. This is my home. This is where I want to be. I love my teammates and we are ready to get this thing rolling. I am excited for the future.”
Kirksey finished third in the league with a career-high 148 tackles last season. He registered 10 games with at least nine tackles. Kirksey added 2.5 sacks and three passes defensed. He played all but two defensive snaps in 2016.
Kirksey is 6-2, 235 pounds and entering his fourth NFL season out of Iowa. Originally selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2014 draft, Kirksey has appeared in 48 games with 29 starts. He has logged 271 career tackles, eight sacks, seven passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Kirksey has added 23 special-teams stops.

But, but, we can't sign our own players? How could this have happened?

Big fan of Kirksey. Be really excellent to see him play a full season next to Collins and with the improved DL.

Very good news. I agree w/Milk that Kirksey really improved his game last year. I thought he was a Special Team's type of player, but he played very well at LBer last year.

Good job by the FO for signing him to a 4 year deal.

Boy three or so years ago I wouldn't have given you a nickel for
Kirksey

I was at weeden's flipper gate game against the
Lions and kirksey was used by running backs out of the back field

He trailed them all game. Drove me crazy.

He has come a long way. So glad to see him get this
Good especially since he is still here smile

Great news...bout time!

Losing your own best players because the front office couldn't seem to find a way to get a contract done with their own best performing players made the franchise, the front office and the owner look like an inept joke.

This is a good start toward turning this issue around and now Sashi, you are sending a positive message to your locker room...work hard and perform on the field and the franchise will reward you.

...a couple of years too late and they can't erase their failures...but this is a good way to get on track, sending a positive message to the locker room..job well done!

I don't remember, but we aren't expecting his game to drop off due to the new scheme, right?

I love the extension. Kirksey plays extremely hard. I think he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves.

Great news for us! He'll play a key piece in William's defense. Love it!

A part of me thought Kirksey would be phased out in the new defense with Peppers taking many of his snaps. This contract tells us that Collins and Kirksey will be on the field almost 100% of the time.

You say all this as though Kirksey is the first Browns player the FO has signed or extended.

Somehow, when you say, "job well done!", it rings a little hollow as you bring more negative comments into the matter than you do the positive aspects.
