BEREA, Ohio -- Hue Jackson had positive words for quarterback Brock Osweiler on Wednesday, calling the quarterback a "pleasant surprise" as the Cleveland Browns worked in Week 2 of OTAs.
"He's done a good job," the Browns coach said of Osweiler, who was acquired from Houston in March. "He works hard at it every day. He's into it. I think he really enjoys being here."
Osweiler is working with Cody Kessler, rookie DeShone Kizer and Kevin Hogan as the Browns sort through who will be the starter. This was not his week to speak to the media, but a week ago he said he could not have felt more welcome.
As for expectations, Jackson was candid in saying his were not exactly soaring when Osweiler arrived.
"I expected everything that you guys wrote," Jackson said. "I watched everything that you guys wrote about what he was and what he wasn't. I heard it from everywhere, too."
Osweiler had a winning record last season for Houston -- his one season as a full-time starter -- but he also threw 16 interceptions and completed just 59 percent, both fourth-lowest in the league.
Jackson clearly was aware, but he has insisted since he came to Cleveland he would judge what he sees.
"I think you guys know me; I don't judge people by what everybody else says," Jackson said. "But everybody has a reputation before them. His was a little bit different. He's not any of that that we've [seen]. The guy has been outstanding in our building, and I think that's what's most important."
Jackson said Osweiler is "long and lanky" when he throws but said he moves well for a guy who stands 6-feet-8. He said Osweiler's height can make him look gangly but that he is so tall that he can drop passes over defenders.
At one point in practice, Osweiler limped away after being caught in a tangle of linemen after he fell while moving up in the pocket. Trainers checked him, but he returned soon after.
Jackson said he told Osweiler on Tuesday that he sees improvement from a year ago.
"He looks much better right now," Jackson said. "He's more compact. He's throwing the ball with a lot more velocity. He's doing a lot of good things. He needs to keep going, just like all our quarterbacks do."
That group includes Kizer, the team's second-round pick who got a few reps with the starting linemen, something Jackson said not to read much into.
"I'm going to put him out there from time to team in different situations," Jackson said. "I need to find out more about him than maybe everybody else. ... He's having a ton thrown at him right now. I'm sure his head is spinning."
I don't really like the guy, but I admit I am rooting for him because he is such an underdog and how cruel people have treated him.
A lot can change when you are broke down. Brock took a few to the chin. It maybe the fire needed. Hue should show "Rocky" to this kid every day!
Oh, one other note. Wouldn't it be nice winning away in Houston week #6? O'Brien struggles getting Watson to be competitive. Icing on cake having both his first or second round pick next season. Help us Obi Wan you're our only hope!!!
I just hope we find a QB out of the players we have at the position. I don't care which one it is.

I've felt since the day the Browns traded for Brock that he will end up being the Browns day 1 starter.
Kessler does not have the tools to be a starting QB in the NFL.
Kizer is not ready. Hopefully he is the long term answer.
Osweiler has the ability to be an NFL starting QB. He has a winning record as one.

I truly feel that his teams won in spite of him, not because of him.
In 2015, the Broncos were 1st in yards allowed, and 4th in scoring defense. They were only 19th in scoring on offense. They ran for almost 1800 yards, and 13 TD. He was a cog in the machine, and yet he was replaced by a broken down Peyton Manning, who was nothing but a shadow of himself.
Then he moved on to Houston. The Texans were 1st in defensive yards allowed, and 11th in scoring defense. They were at the bottom of the NFL on offense, ranking 28th in points scored,m and 29th in offensive yards. With all of the problems we had on offense last year, we were 30th in yards on offense, and 31st in points scored.
We were close in rushing to the Texans last year, and actually did out-rush them on the year by about 100 yards.
The Texans also has superior talent/experience on offense around their QB. They had Lamar Miller, Alfred Blue, DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, and a couple of serviceable TE.
I am not feeling the love for him. His downfield passing was worse than Kessler's last year.
I hope that one of our QBs steps up and grabs hold of the job, but I don't expect it to be Osweiler.

The timeline w/Manning and BO. The superior talent thing. And the deep ball thing. Now, you can cite stats, but you know what they say about stats, right? LOL
BO didn't get benched for the playoffs by a broken down Manning that literally couldn't throw the ball over 20 yards? .. guess i remember things wrong ... *shrugs*
Hopkins alone gives him the superior talent claim .. we have no one that could be in the same room as his jock much less carry it ... *LOL* ...
If there was any deception to his post it was Miller .. who up til this point is his career has proven way more than Crow .. WAY MORE .. but last year he was dinged or hurt from week 3 or 4 through the end of the year .. Crow prolly stood healthy cause he was under utilized last year due to us getting behind early and hue abondining the running game ... Crow is better than Blue and was better than Miller last year afterMiller got hurt ...
But overall .. Y-Town was right .. they have two TE's better than the crap we called TE's last year .. Barnidge still hasn't signed yet ... why's that if he was so talented? .. and like i said .. u put all the skill position players in a room and Hopkins is HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE anyone else in the room ...
Can't comment on the deep ball thing .. never broke his film down ...
I think Hue needs to decide who the QB is and move forward. Every QB has strengths and weaknesses. It is easy saying QB isn't a worthy starter. Ok, now what?
If you can't build a winning team with Brock or Cody, you have no chance being successful playing a rookie. A more advance young veteran allows a team to better other positions. Gives team a better chance to win.
I like Kessler. In the end, I really don't care whether it is Brock or Cody. Both these guys can get this team close to a winning season. I hope the Browns have stopped seeking the "holy grail". When the right QB is found, having the right players in place make it easier on everyone.
Nothing...it's why Elway didn't give him stupid money and it's why Houston discarded him ONE SEASON after giving him stupid money.
If Hue can make him a backup (or better) or trade-chip so be it. If not, we got another top 64 guy for next year. Take a chance and STILL get a high pick. Sounds good to me.
We shall see... it is not unheard of that a player that is trash to many teams in the league works out elsewhere. Right now on NFL Network, they are replaying the Tampa/Oakland SuperBowl. Both teams had QB's that had failed elsewhere and were let go. Hell, the Raiders team that beat us by red right 88 had Jim Plunkett at QB that was dumped a couple times prior to his stint in Oakland. That doesn't mean Brock will lead us to a SB but it is possible that Hue Jacksons offense better suits Brock than Houston's did. It's also possible that our coaching staff is better suited to getting the most out of him than Houstons. Different people respond in different ways. It is also possible that Brock will fail and be cut before the season.... We won't know until camp starts how good or bad he is in this system under these coaches. Right now I THINK he is probably the best bet to start. But that is based on very little data.
Not sure if that article proves or disproves anyone's point...but it surely does NOTHING to dispute what YT said above.
Article says that Mannning STUNK ... yet he was still chosen to start over a less STINKY BO ... pretty sure that puts it into perspective ... nothing wrong with y-towns timeline there ...
BO STINKS ...
Last year he was benched for Tom Savage ... thats right .. Tom Savage ...
How many of u ever heard of him before last year ... ya ... that's what I thought ... ...
Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
Plunkett was traded once ... dumped once .. not dumped a couple times ...
When traded the compensation for Plunkett was not one but 2 first rnd picks and a 2nd rnd pick and another qb ... BO was dumped via trade .. they GAVE US a 2nd rnd pick to take hm off their hands .... *LOL* ..
Plunkett started his career as a tackling dummy behind a cruddy OL and on a terrible team .. he was a frickin pineada ... *L* ..
His career was the exact opposite of BO's .. Plunkett played on HORRIBLE teams til he reached the faiders ... unlike BO who played on A SB WINNING TEAM and a team with a great D and some weapons on O ...
Thats why they chose a broken Manning over BO to start the playoff game ... actins speak louder than words ... at least in my world ...
Elway said he hopes hes hear for along time and then he promptly gets benched ... ... if thats not a ringing endorsement ... I'm not sure what is ..
I'm done here boys ... have fun ...
Can we stop pretending that Elway didn't offer BO a pretty hefty contract ($16m per year) which the Texans just offered a little more ($18m per year). I would say that is a bit of an endorsement from Elway no?
Look we all know BO looked terrible in Houston and I'm not holding my breath he makes a significant change in Cleveland but at some point at least 2 clubs saw fit to offer him big contracts.

While I tend to give your side of the debate more credence than the other, I still don't believe it proves that he's not the best option on our roster.
The question to me isn't if he stinks. The question to me is will he stink less than out other choices when the season is ready to start. Kizer most likely won't be ready, then there's Kessler. So you know, well......
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
I know some in the media have said some within the team think that Kizer will start "early" because he is much more talented than the other two....if that helps anyone form an opinion on the other two.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

Is it possible Elway was wrong about Osweiler?
Is it possible that you guys are wrong? LOL man. Look at the track record of guys like Diam and YTown on qbs.

Or Bill O'Brien.
I think Osweiler is bad. I don't think I need to say much else on the subject at this point.
I never understood why Brock is taking it on the chin. I liked his interview. What did people want him to say? "I am a overpaid loser who doesn't want to start?"
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
