Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Did not think this needed a thread. I thought I add here.

Steelers cut Shamarko Thomas. Wasn't this the guy selected when Steelers traded up in the draft with Joe Banner? Many Browns fans went ballistic over!

With 99 days until NFL season, here are 99 people who will shape it

Culture-changers

6. Gregg Williams, defensive coordinator, Cleveland Browns. The remaking of the Browns is in full swing, and their new coordinator won't go easy on the young guys around whom they're building. Between Williams and head coach Hue Jackson, no one will question the
intensity of the Cleveland coaching staff.

Despite being dealt, Demario Davis still says Browns are on way to shocking the world

http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2017/6/1/15...cking-the-world

Man...talk about Hue Jackson having his guys buy in to what is happening in Cleveland. It’s one thing for Isaiah Crowell to say the Browns are going to shock the world, considering he’s still with the team. It’s another thing for a player to say the same thing about the team that just traded him. After the Browns shipped ILB Demario Davis to the Jets this morning for S Calvin Pryor, Davis posted the following message to his Instagram page:

I want to thank Jimmy and Dee Haslem, Sashi Brown, Andrew Berry, and Hue Jackson for giving me the opportunity to spend an amazing year with the Cleveland Browns. I have nothing but good things to say about this 1st class organization, that's on its way to shocking the world.

To my brothers in the lockerroom; the stage is set, go make it happen. In this past year, I've grown as a person and a player in ways that wouldn't have happened in any other circumstance. For that I'm thankful to the one who's in control, the man upstairs.

Be blessed Cleveland!

CK will start the year ... he will be much better than last year ... that bar wasn't set very high ... he may or may not be average ... but he will be a much different qb than he was last year ...

Lets see ... last years rotation went something like this ..

RG3 - 1 game
Josh - 1 game
CK - 3 or 4 games
Jesus - 1 game
Then CK
Josh
CK
RG3
CK ...

Thats 4 starters with CK starting games at 4 different points of the season ... no one started more than 4 maybe 5 games in a row ... wait .. did Hogan get a start also ... can't remember .. i know he finished up some games ...

That oughta be real tough to improve on .. rolleyes

Quote:
Who are the big plays going to come from on O?

Crow had a few last year ... other than that ... we had no one else make any big plays last year ... all we lost was Pryor ... Barnidge was so good last year he still hasn't signed ... rofl

Once again ... the bar isn't set very high ...

The O will be better ... it almost has to be ... *LOL* ....

Quote:
Who is our FS? Do you like our secondary? Do you not think our lack of experience is going to be a factor?

Don't know
No
Yes ... experience is always a factor ..

The experience factor will be a double edged sword ..

On O it will be year two in Hue's system ... On D it will hurt and we will be very very young and it will be a new system .. BUT the youth is MUCH BETTER than what we had last year .. MUCH BETTER ... Williams system will be MUCH EASIER to learn than Horton's was .. and it is a very agressive D ..

We have a TON OF SPEED in Kirksey, Collins, Peppers and Garrett .. those guys all FLY .. last yer we had Kirksey for the entire year and Collins for 1/2 or so .. and it will be the 2nd rnd. DE's second year ...

We will be younger but we should be MUCH BETTER ...

Quote:
I'm thinking 3 or 4. I think the odds of us winning two are just as good as 5.

Me thinks 4 ... and the exact opposite of you on the rest ... 5 better odds than 3 ... 6 better odds than 2 ...

I'm going to do a thread on that at some point ... want to adress CK first ... based on today's PM .. doesn't sound like you'll be participating ... frown ...

Quote:
Anyway you slice it, these guys are going to have experienced a ton of losing over two years. That is not good, bro. And I think I understand more about the psyche of a football team than you do, considering our backgrounds.

I agree on the "our backgrounds" part ... don't agree with the losing culture part ... hopefully we'll get to 6 and it won't be a big deal ... thumbsup

I agree w/this, but the point I was trying to make was that I thought we needed a RT way more than a guard.

Agree 100% with that ... problem is .. who was available at RT in FA or the draft ... we screwed the pooch on that one last year ... lets hope Coleman is the answer ... if not, we'll be heading into next off season with the same glaring weakness ...

Its not like we needed to reach for a guy like Cam Robinson ... we had needs at just about every position so there was no need to reach for a certain position ..

Now, if Greco is going to miss part of the season, the signing makes way more sense. And again, I don't think it was a bad acquisition, just a bit strange because Greco is a very good guard.

There's going to be injuries .. thats just todays nfl .. Zietler gives us much better depth and flexibility on the OL .. he was hands down and by far the best OLman available ..

Quote:
What would I have done? Drafted secondary players early and often.

I can't argue with that ... makes sense ...

Passing on Hooker was a mistake IMO .. but we did draft Peppers .. we don't like him .. but he is a secondary guy ..

I don't know who was available when we took the TE .. prolly a good safety or cb could have been had there .. Kizer was a good pick IMO ..

We had holes everywhere ... i would have preffered we went with Hooker and maybe a db where we took the TE ... other than that .. not sure what else we could have done ..

I don't recall saying he was going to be w/the players. I do recall saying that the Colts had to hire a psychologist to work on the relationship between him and Pagano. The latter was the HC, not a player.

Keep him away from Hue then also .. *LOL* ..

Hopefully Hue had input on the hire ... my guess is Hue was the catalyst in getting a grass roots guy on board .. but thats just me looking at the tea leaves ..

Still very early ... only thing we know at this point .. they'll at least get year 2 ... thats a long ass time in the thief's world .. *LOL* ...

Davis is true class with that. I wish his nothing but the best there in NY. He'll have a chance to play far more often than he would've here I think.

Reading stories about Browns OTAs and key players not participating due to injuries..Cory Coleman, Kenny Britt, Myles Garrett and last week, Jabrill Peppers..this is a bit of a concern.

Hopefully the Browns are just being overly cautious..but, these guys are already behind in the area of playbook reps.

On the subject of analytics...I wonder if durability and availability are factored into our front office's decision making process when judging talent?

I would think that size, strength, toughness, injury history, availability for practice and games are factored into every selection made.

If a player is standing on the sidelines due to injury, unable to practice or play, they can't help your team win.

I just read that Cory Coleman is dealing an injury suffered in OTAs, falling on the football as well as having issues with his hamstring. His hamstring issues date all the way back to his freshman year at Baylor, where Coleman was redshirted his freshman year due to hamstring injuries.

As a Browns rookie, Coleman also missed practice time and pre-season games last season with hamstring concerns.

Durability and injury history should be a consideration when deciding which players are best suited for your roster..jmo..mac

Plutos article split into four parts, FO, OTAs,Brock & Pryor.

Cleveland Browns have Terry Talkin' Brock Osweiler, front office moves

BY TERRY PLUTO, THE PLAIN DEALER terrypluto2003@yahoo.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Quietly, the Sashi Brown front office has been growing and improving after a difficult 2016 season.

Instead of losing their own free agents, the Cleveland Browns have been signing them.

Instead of disregarding veteran free agents, the Browns have used the market to fill some holes.

And they continue to pile up future draft picks and make creative deals.

1. Christian Kirksey signed a four-year, $38 million deal with $20 million guaranteed. The linebacker was heading into the final year of his 2014 rookie contract. Now was the time to sign him, not wait until next spring when he would have been a free agent.

2. The Browns did the same with Joel Bitonio, signing the guard to an extension in March worth $47 million over five years, with $23 million guaranteed.

3. Kirksey and Bitonio are all that remain from the 2014 Browns draft. First-rounders Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel are out of the NFL. Third-rounder Terrance West bounced from Cleveland to Tennessee to Baltimore. West rushed for 774 yards with the Ravens in 2016. Fourth-rounder Pierre Desir has played little and is now with Seattle.

4. The Browns opened that 2014 draft with 10 picks. By the time they were done trading, they picked six players. Now, it's down to Kirksey and Bitonio. At least this front office has kept them.

5. The front office traded for Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots last season, then signed the veteran to a four-year, $50 million deal with $26 million guaranteed.

6. The Browns invested big money in free agents Kevin Zeitler and J.C. Tretter to help the offensive line. They signed veteran receiver Kenny Britt as they passed on Terrelle Pryor. In 2016, they barely spent on free agency.

7. They signed Jamar Taylor to an extension. They signed veteran free agent Jason McCourty to help in the defensive backfield. They made the deal for Brock Osweiler, adding a second-round pick and some depth at quarterback.

8. Not everything with the Browns is great. But the front office is moving in the right direction, including the hiring of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Corey Coleman’s injuries could derail hopeful sophomore season

There will be targets aplenty, so can Corey Coleman stay healthy enough to develop his skill-set and live up to his draft status?

by Mike Hoag@BrownsBeat Jun 2, 2017, 8:00am EDT

Cleveland Browns receiver Corey Coleman’s already banged-up body is concerning as he moves into a potential breakout sophomore season.

After taking a “huge spill” as Hue Jackson characterized his falling onto the football after a catch attempt during the team’s first week of OTAs, Coleman has been held out and could potentially miss the team’s upcoming mandatory June minicamp as a precaution. That means he’ll miss most of OTAs, minicamp and will be off the field until training camp in July.

The reason given for his absence may differ depending on the source, but Coleman could potentially also be dealing with a sore hamstring according to reporting by Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer.

It’s all there, in layers, an unfolding docudrama of one man’s body’s propensity to break down at the most inoportune moments. And it’s hardly an isolated situation since Coleman was snagged by the Browns in the first round of last year’s draft.

The litany of overall injuries he’s sustained is a growing list that includes multiple hamstring ailments that have caused him to miss significant playing and practice time at both the collegiate and professional levels.

Missing time in college while playing in Baylor’s cookie-cutter offense didn’t seem to hamper him as his career progressed there, but it’s a different story with the level of complexity of the NFL. It’ll be hard for him to take advantage of the massive opportunity awaiting him if he can’t shake these problems during preseason and enter the 2017 season with a clean bill of health.

And it’s important he does because his hype couldn’t be higher for his sophomore campaign despite his rocky rookie season. That season saw him haul in just 45.2 percent of his targets, fourth worst in the NFL for receivers with 50 or more targets. Now, those struggles can partially be attributed to him missing six weeks after a breakout two touchdown performance in Week 2, and maybe blamed a little bit on the Browns’ annual quarterback carousel, but his play surely wasn’t an encouraging overall body of work.

Opportunity is knocking now, loudly, given the Browns offense’s abundance of missing targets from last season. They’ll have to delegate 276 targets that were lost from a season ago after Terrelle Pryor, Gary Barnidge and Andrew Hawkins were all not retained.

Jackson has said he’s expecting Coleman to be “the guy” and to live up to his draft stock. So having him on the field to learn is crucial entrance criteria for him to even sniff becoming that type of player this season.

NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah also talked him up and spoke a little about his expectations for him on Episode 186 of his Move the Sticks podcast hosted by NFL.com.

“My number one guy, Corey Coleman for the Browns. I don’t know how many games the Browns are going to win, but I think Corey Coleman’s going to have a big sophomore campaign provided he stays healthy for 16 weeks. I think he leads this team in catches and in touchdowns.”
Jeremiah’s qualification — “provided he stays healthy” — is the same disclaimer I’m going to leave you with. And although it may be way too early to be worried about injuries affecting him this season, a trend does exist, and that trend coupled with recent developments is certainly something to pay attention to as summer turns to fall and pads are donned.

It’s not fair to label him “injury prone” per se, not yet, but trends don’t lie.

Jackson and his staff could very well be happy with Coleman’s progress and are tracking diligently on his injury history. That understanding would make sense given the precaution they’re showing with him at this early point in their offseason program.

Having him healthy and ready to go full speed in training camp should be their utmost priority, and we’re still on track for that. So while it’s OK to be concerned, no one needs to panic just yet.

link

Surely the Browns training staff is involved in developing a specific plan to help Corey with his hamstring issues.

Didn't the Browns change their approach to strength and training last year?

Not sure if or what the Browns strength and training department is doing to help CC, but he needs to able to practice with our QBs at full speed to work on his timing , route running....

Cory Coleman has the potential to be something special for the Browns offense, if he can remain on the field.

The only reference to hamstring issues has been Mary Kay...the rest of NFL coverage uses Mary Kay as the Browns expert and repeat a lot of what she states as fact.

I suspect he bruised his ribs when he fell on the ball hard.

But I see us being more cautious with everyone in OTA's so that by Training camp when the hard work starts as a team we are all healthy and I'm sure the goal is to have all ready for the Season. So I don't see its time to panic about these "Injuries"...I'm happy as long as it doesn't require extensive medical help!

I think there are much better places to discuss Coleman's injuries than in a FO thread. In fact, we are already discussing his injuries in a couple of threads. You're reaching.

This is why it's more important than ever to not fire everyone after the Browns only win 3 games this year. The Browns are going to suck this year. Badly. I hope Haslam has the stones to stay the course with everyone...Hue, Sashi, everyone. Coleman is a bust and the 2016 draft will go down as one of the worst. Passing on Wentz was a colossal mistake born of inexperience and believing they were smarter than everyone else. But it looks like they learned from year 1 to year 2. That's progress. Passing on Hooker at 12 was another colossal mistake but the the rest of the draft looks promising. Their mistakes will be held against them this year. There will be mounting pressure to start over again and those mistakes will constantly be brought up. Stay the course. As bad as it's going to be this year, it will be even worse starting over again.

I think Dee running the show is going to go a long way toward staying the course.

He's had hamstring issues since college. He had them last year and he's having them this year. Don't dismiss the obvious so quickly.

I don't dismiss the soft tissue stuff. Guys who pull muscles tend to keep pulling muscles. Thet could be called injury prone.

Breaking a hand of tearing a ACL is just dumb luck.

Coleman's career has gotten off to an awful start. Missed TONS of valuable time. Pretty tough to progress when you aren't on the field.

Honestly, I hated the pick from the start ... had some faith because of his draft position. But it looks like a poor pick right now.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

vers...while you and others focus on my last post concerning Coleman's hamstrings, my original post on this subject was just above...

Quote:

I again ask, on the "subject of analytics"...I wonder "if durability/availability/injury history" are factored into our front office's decision making process when judging talent?

Kenny Britt was also standing on the sidelines with last week and if you bother to look up his injury history, you have to have some degree of concern as he only started 71 of 104 games in his 8 yr career. Britt has dealt with hamstring, knee and ankle injuries over his career..but the good news, Britt has only missed 7 games over the last 3 seasons.

The Browns top two WRs, both have extensive injury histories and I wonder if our "analytics driven" front office (the decision makers) include factors such as size, strength, toughness, injury history, durability and availability, when judging and deciding on who they add to the Browns roster?

It does not matter how good someone has been in the past...if they are injured, standing on the sidelines, they contribute nothing to the team's goal.

IMO, durability and injury history should be a consideration when deciding which players are best suited to play for the Browns.

Shouldn't our analytics department include injury related factors when making personnel decisions?

That's where I've been.

mac, I think analytics are factored in. It is why older vets were let go.

It is a fine line being in shape and football shape. No workout regiment allows players to go all out. It is a gradual process. Players like Coleman are vulnerable in the beginning. It is why I hate this current CBA. Players must produce in shorter periods of time.

It is why good teams with depth gradually get better through the year. While teams with minimal depth fall apart before mid season.

You want a good example see Baltimore's results last season. If they don't get better youth on the back end of their roster, they will see more 8-8 seasons.

I think I need to elaborate more. Having older vets as starters means less development time for the younger guys. Playing younger guys more quickens development. IMO, this forces teams to push the younger into starting rolls in order to get time. I think minimal practice time really handcuff lessor teams. I think a perfect example is watching the OL and QB positions last year. Browns kept playing guys who simply were not ready.

This is a difficult topic to really discuss. HCs are assembling teams to battle attrition. Youth is more durable where vets are knowledgeable.

That's because its awfully hard to bang the "the Browns don't care of their own" drum when we just resigned Kirksey.

Who's dismissing...show me one statement from the coaches that talk about his HAMSTRING as a current issue. Journalist copying the fantastic Mary Kay have but I usually listen to the pressers.

What I got from Hue's presser that I last watched...he stated that fall was a little more than first thought of. Nothing specific I do assume it has to do with bruised ribs or something of that nature if it had to do with him landing on the ball.

Don't dismiss my opinion to fast just cause I'm a homer...but I'm to believe he's in Hamstring HELL right now from what...Negative posters...lol laugh

Yes, let's just ignore his history of hamstring injuries and the fact that the Browns are keeping this thing hush, hush and pretend everything is coming up sunshine and daisies. lol

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Ya, Vers. beat me to it, Colemans career is yet to take off, but he hasn't even missed a whole season.

Kellon Winslow jr. missed 2 whole seasons, before really getting onto the field. So I think giving Coleman some more time to show his abilities has value.

You said you hated the pick,
Given the current state, and the former state of the team and roster, what other options do you think were better to address Wide Receiver?
That would have been better than the pick.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Coleman looks really good on certain plays. He really does look like a next level WR sometime and super dangerous after the catch. Having horrible QB's did not help him though. If he gets put on the Saints team instead of Michael Thomas, I'd bet he would have a much better year than Thomas did.

Thus, I am sure all of that is factored in....trust me, our front office is way smarter than the old school guys who went mostly on huntch.

Plus, in addition to Berry, we just hired another old school football guy, so you no longer have a beef.

I said the Browns needed more of a balance in the front office..so they hire the guy who sucked in Indy..hmmm

Not sure that would have been the guy Hue would have liked Haslam to hire, but adding a little old school savvy to help teach the lawyer and baseball guy should help.

Surely Depo and Sashi use 'injury history' in his analytics analysis?...if not, they want to reconsider that factor.
