Does cover 2 leave the seams more vulnerable?
Or is it related to talent? Just curious.

I always thought their safeties sucked in coverage, but the Cover 2 is weak in those areas.

You've heard of the skinny post. Typically ran by TE's who start straight up the field and then angle slightly towards the goal post. This is a deeper route and it splits the two safeties.

The Cover 2 is weaker on deeper passes over the middle and also when teams run high/low receivers in the middle of the field.

Similarly, a Cover 2 defense struggles on the sidelines when teams run a high/low receivers. Let's say one receiver runs a deep corner route and another runs a short out. That's tough for a Cover 2 to deal with and the corne is hung out to dry.

I think ed's chart showed they weren't in Cover 2 a lot, but I'm not quite sure because these old eyes couldn't read it. Too small. However, I know this...........when I watched the Rams last year, I saw them in Cover 2 quite a bit and they got burned. There is a reason they gave up so many 30 plus point games last year.

I'm not sure where (could even be on this board), but I've heard a lot of mention of Cover 2 Defense.

I am not a big fan of it, and i don't think any of our coordinators have run it regularly any time recently (Horton, Pettine, Jauron, Romeo, Mangini). But please correct me if i'm wrong. Maybe I don't understand the full nuances of cover 2 to realize that we were running it with one of those guys

We haven't ran a lot of Cove 2 or coverages that off-shoots of that base coverage. However, we ran 2-deep safeties at times last year when IC and Kindred were both on the field at the same time---after Poyer got hurt and before Reynolds took over. At least that is my memory of it. We could have ran it while Poyer was still healthy, too. I can't remember for sure.

I am not a fan of Cover 2. Hopefully, that isn't the plan.

Campbell was so disappointing to me. So much diff than what i saw at Northwestern. He just didn't seem involved at all last year. I dunno if that was scheme or what, but I often noticed Kindred (for better or worse), whereas Campbell never seemed to be around the ball. That's what I usually assume safeties are supposed to do. Esp at the beginning of the season when Jordan Poyer played the first 6 games......

Yeah, both he and Kindred were guys that a lot of people were pimping. Two of many that made me question Nacua or whatever his name is. LOL

IC was even worse than Kindred. He didn't make any plays. Kindred did better when he moved to SS, but he is terrible in coverage.

Rookies and sophomore players can become better. I remember all the "football guys" on here laughing about Horton calling Tashuan one of our best defensive players. Of course when Gipson went to the pro bowl the following year the football mensas on here forgot how quickly they ripped him to shreds for two years prior to that. People did the same with Kirksey and Mitchell Schwartz. Alex Mack was another guy that needed a 2nd year before he made his impact apparent. I do not understand why so many people on here love to boast when the Browns fail. I hope being right isn't so important to them that they forget to root for the Browns.

Nacua is a nice prospect. He has all the athleticism needed to play in the NFL, however how he plays in pads is a lot slower than his top end numbers indicate. He plays deep zone well, but he will really have to evolve his skills in man coverage. He is also a pretty weak tackler.

I absolutely agree that players can and do improve. I doubt anyone would disagree with that.


I hope that all the guys on our team improve from last year. Especially at positions that we need them to improve the most (like safety).

But I don't think anyone is out to see players fail. No one's ego is that huge that they'd put being right over the team's success........

I'll say right now, if Ibraheim Campbell came out and ended up being a quality starter, I'd be pumped. How could I not be. I watched him when I was living in Chicago (and rooting for NW), and he was one of their top defensive playmakers. Like I said, I was pumped when we drafted him. And if in his third season he makes big strides verses his second, that would be wonderful.

I think realistically making the team first but from the little I watched and reading around, pro day etc, he may have a chance considering we have no one really in situ. A long shot obviously but here's hoping he can stick and become a good player for us.

I'm still baffled at Desmond King's free fall as I felt he could transition to safety - does anyone know anything more on that? I thought he was a top 50 talent - shows what I know....

Excellent point and I will add to your list Buster Skrine. I remember vividly Buster being ripped to shreds in here for at least two years in a row and then when we didn't re-sign him people were angry at the FO.

Point being: All players develop, some achieve their potential while some rise above and exceed all expectations. Let's give Campbell, Kindred and Reynolds their fair dues and see what they bring before prematurely writing them off.

Player development is a huge priority for the Browns front office. Kindred had his blunders last season, but before he got hurt, he played okay. I think they give him a good chunk of PT to see if he blossoms.

He also seems like the type of guy a coach would like. Hard hitter, not afraid of competition, and more importantly he keeps his mouth shut. I think he and Williams will work well together.

His recognition ability was about the worst I ever saw. He is a straight line runner who can't cover at all.

I can see him maybe being a SS, but not a FS.

per PFF 3 main coverages Gregg used w/ Rams were:

Cover 3 - 29.37%

Cover 1 - 25.20%

Cover 2 - 24.24%

Yeah as really think that he will land somewhere. Just Browns was not his type.

I haven't read that he's slow...but then again I don't read Walter's football because I don't think they're reliable....I don't think speed will be the deciding factor for whether or not Nacua makes it.
He doesn't look slow on film and his timed speed range is NFL level...there are certainly slower S in the league. I don't give the speed knock much credence for him but that doesn't mean he'll succeed either.

I think Nacua has shot because FS on this roster is thin. And it appears that the staff likes him better then Powell. But he is an UDFA and a longshot to make the team. And just to be clear I don't think you are ripping the kid.

Not only that but it was Tampa 2. That was something new that they tried last year because both Ogletree and Barron fit the Tampa 2 so well.

That may be a sign that Williams will adapt his style to his players.

Thanks for all the information. You had posted a chart, but it was hard for me to read. I thought I saw them in Cover 2 quite a bit. I'm not a fan of that particular defense, but hopefully, we'll give that look and use it only on certain down and distances.

I have a question. Why do you think he wasn't drafted if you don't believe his speed was the issue? He put up flashy numbers at a high profile college. There had to have been something to make him fall out of the draft, right?

I agree. Something caused him to be undrafted. His numbers were good enough that I am sure he had some eyes on him throughout the season.

There is a big difference between a reported 4.49 and a 4.3 something. I believe those were close to his reported speed numbers. One of those numbers has to be off for some reason.

I guess if I had to throw one out, it would be the slower of the two. A player can run slower for any number of reasons. It's hard to start running faster then ever before.

You are probably right, but to clarify, I really was just asking ed, because I have no idea and I believe that ed did indeed study the guy.

Maybe he's got good straight-line speed, but not functional speed for the safety position? Does his recognition slow down his decision-making, making him appear slower?

I think it was more so growing pains of a rookie in the league.

I don't know enough about either one to know why they got cut or went undrafted. I just know there has to be a reason. I doubt we cut players, or draft late round picks by throwing a dart at a list of names.

LOL..........it actually started w/Powell, went to Nacua or whatever his name is, and then Kindred and IC got into the mix. LOL.......it's kinda funny because I think some posters are getting confused about who another poster is referring to.

I kinda think all of them are just "guys." But, I've been wrong before, so we'll see.
