(WLNS) – Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana has been shot, along with three other people, at a softball field in Alexandria, Virginia.

The four were in a dugout during practice for the upcoming annual Congressional softball.

It is also reported that two police officers are also among the wounded.

Rep. Scalise appeared to be alert and conscious as he was taken from the field, reportedly with a hip wound.

Rep. Scalise is the Republican House Majority Whip and is considered well-liked in Congress, according the CBS News.

It is reported the gunman fired as many as fifty shots into the dugout, although some witnesses say they heard as many as 100 shots.

Police say they have a suspect is custody but have not released any information about the suspect.

My heart goes out to all the wounded and their families.

Early report says the guy was a Bernie supporter and a progressive liberal. Sad to see anyone do something like this, shameful that it's someone from the left who shares my views.

Very happy that Trump's statement was one of unification and not divisive. We don't need anymore of the on a day like today.

Fortunately, it seems the guy is a really bad shot. Reports are that he may have fired 50-100 times (I doubt it was that many, it just seemed like that many to those on the scene)... but he was standing behind the 3rd base dugout with a field full of unsuspecting people and didn't kill anybody?

And how do you get off 50 to 100 shots with armed Capitol Hill Security already on the scene?

Just glad nobody was killed, will be interesting to watch as details come out.

Once again it never ceases to amaze me how these lunatics get their hands on guns and ammo with relative ease without any red flags.

Yeah, this just seems like a really odd story. That's quite a number of shots to take. Unless people are confusing CH security gun fire with the shooters?

Fortunately, it does't seem like anybody was seriously injured.

Other sources similarly reported that the gunman asked about the party affiliation of the players on the field: “Are those Republicans or Democrats out there practicing?” he asked, according to one report. One congressman told CNN: “There’s no question that he knew who we were.”

Unless he has a history of mental health issues or felony acts of violence, what red flag do you want to throw up to prevent him from buying a gun and ammo?

Do you have any information at all on what kind of gun it was, how he obtained it, or what his background looks like?

Ummmm.........In 2006, he was arrested "on suspicion of battery, domestic battery, criminal damage of property and reckless discharge of a firearm," the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department said in the Belleville News-Democrat that same year. The charges were dismissed.

Does it really matter what kind of gun? Do you want defend the process that has failed once again here?

"I don't ever again want to hear how great a president [Ronald Reagan] was," he wrote the News-Democrat in March 2010. "All he did was give tax breaks to the rich and put the rest of the country (or at least 13.1 percent) out of work."

I have witnessed a gathering of Professionals toasting "To the Death of President Trump".

I have seen the mock severed head of our President.

I have heard about the Central Park play where President Trump is stabbed to death in the end.

Now I watch as gunman attempts to assassinate Congressmen gathered to practice for a charity baseball game.

I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but even I can see where this is all headed.

I am left wondering, can We the People alter this course or are we doomed to complete it.

So? He's a known wing nut with prior's of discharging firearms, domestic violence and such. These lunatics need to be flagged as risks to society before they try this crap..

There's your answer. The charges were dismissed, so they never happened.

Would you prefer everyone carried false/dismissed charges on their record for the rest of their lives?

I'll defend it because the process didn't fail. He wasn't actually convicted of anything. Maybe he should have been, but that speaks to the DA who dropped the charges. It speaks to the victim who may not have shown up to court. Even bad people have Constitutional Rights.

What does giffords have to do with this? The only commonality is that she was shot. Oddly enough, she was shot by a supporter, not some nut job out for revenge.

Who are you trying to defend here? He looked an awful lot like the average political lunatic with a grudge against the conservatives with a prior arrest of unlawful discharge of firearms. For him to buy own guns and get ammo is just wrong. But no it will be ok, our society is safer and stronger with him having his guns and ammo at the ready.

Whatever.... you guys crack me up defending this lunatic's rights to firearms.

I can get a semi automatic weapon and ammo in less than an hour if i wanted .. ANYONE can get a gun and ammo in a week if they wanted too ... its not that hard ..

The governor of VA made one valid point IMO .. he said "there's tomany guns on the street" .. he's right ... problem is .. MOST OF THEM ARE ILLEGAL ..

He also mentioned 93 gun murders a day in this country .. I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THATS HORRIBLE ... now lets give a RELEVANT number ... hom many of those are with legal guns vs illegal guns? ...

That ass also said we need to do more about gun control ... then without taking a breath he said that todays not the day to talk about it ... u just did jackass .. rolleyes ..

We don't even know wack jobs name much less if he has a history of being coco puffs or weather his gun was aquired legally ...

In Rochester about 4 or 5 years ago ... a dude called in a fire alarm christmas or New Years morning and shot the first responders ... one died ... he had just gotten out of the Luny bin ... all the politicians were screaming GUN CONTROL ... GUN CONTROL ...

turns out the daughter of his next door neighbor bought them for him ... her mistake was buying them legally ... i knew her .. she knows a lot of the same people i do .. not sure why she didn't go through them ... cost her a lot of her life .. shes in prison and rightfully so ..

U can't put the cat back in the bag .... having stricter laws would only take the guns out of the good guys ... look at Chicago .. as tough a gun laws as there is in the country and its Ike a shooting gallery there ... do we ever hear about how they aquire there guns? ..

Where are all u libs up in arms about that ... NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!!!!

U want my guns .. get them off the streets ... then we can have a chat ... til then ... I'll defend myself thank u ....

I never said Gabrielle Giffords had anything to do with this incident. You jumped to conclusions and was silly to assume that. So go troll elsewhere.

You're the one that put up a giffords hash tag, not me. It's obvious by doing that, you were trying to push some sort of correlation between these two shootings. Why don't you stick to facts and stop trying to push an agenda. We'll talk about who the real troll is later.

Yes, it matters. A lot more people support tighter regulations on "assault weapons" (put in quotes because I realize it's undefined) and regular hunting rifles.

If those quotes make a person a lunatic who shouldn't own a gun, then I seriously hope none of the democrats on this board own a gun because y'all say those same exact things every freakin' day.

As far as his arrest, charges were dismissed.. how much should a person be punished after never having been actually tried or convicted of a crime?

A "prior" is a conviction, not an arrest or an allegation of wrong doing. Just throwing words in like you did with "profit" again... hoping folks won't notice.

And he's a wing nut because he wants to decriminalize weed, raise taxes on the rich, and he hates Ronald Reagan... is this your admission that the entire democratic party are wing nuts?

Depends. He unlawfully discharged a firearm "unlawfully" and was arrested on a domestic dispute at the same time. Many times if the victim drops the charges then all charges go away. If discharging a firearm charge had stuck, he probably wouldn't have so easily gotten another firearm and ammo. Just saying.

Thanks for being civil DC. thumbsup

Hey their are plenty of wingnuts on the right! tongue I use the term wingnut loosely to mean those of extreme political views and who are radical political activists.

I agree and I can completely support the gun law that prevents somebody who unlawfully discharged a firearm from owning guns...

But since the charges were dismissed, there is little they can to apply those gun laws to him... seems like your problem is with the discharging a firearm and domestic violence incident more than it is with gun laws. The gun laws very well would have worked if that case had been pursued and he had been found guilty.

No amount of laws or regs could stop this kind of thing from happening. The guns are everywhere and easily available both legally and illegally. You can't put that genie back in the bottle, not in any short amount of time anyway.

Exactly. All gun charges in all domestic violence or any crimes should be pursued to the maximum extent of the law and never just dropped because of a plea deal or the victim/spouse drops the charge.
