Dear Mr.Lerner:
I have Been a Cleveland Browns football fan since 1983. I have poured my heart, soul, and countless dollars of money supporting this franchise. The Cleveland Browns used to be a good/decent team, but now...we are the laughing stock of the NFL. I know since we came to the league as an expansion team(thanks to Art moving our team to Baltimore) we have not fared so well. The Browns haven't had a winning season since 1987(20 years ago) sure we made the playoffs under Butch Davis once, but we got in by luck and other teams losing. We haven't won the division, or outright won a wildcard since the above mentioned year. 20 years of losing takes a toll....most fans on this board just don't understand....the Browns were once the pride of ohio...now were the bums of Ohio.
Part 1: The GM Phil Savage
Mr.Lerner, with this in mind, i want to ask you if you truly care about this team actually winning some football games. Now is the time i ask you to carefully consider reviewing your coaching staff and reviewing your GM. Before i go on, i will say this, Phil Savage, while he made some questionable moves, has done a pretty decent job of drafting for this franchise. I have only 1 qualm with Phil, and that is him trading with a division rival(Baltimore) and allowing them to draft the player they wanted. In that situation, Savage needs to play the draft in 2 ways, 1.Bettering his own team, 2. screwing a divisional opponent when possible. Phil should have traded with anyone but Baltimore or any other division rival, we should have traded for "less" to a team outside our division/conferece, just to dog Baltimore out of the player they wanted. Being a football GM is about being cutthroat and poker...you need to screw your divisional oppoents whenever possible, and Phil failed to do that and handed Baltimore Ngata....which was a mistake...he should have taken a lesser deal from another team, just so Baltimore wouldn't get Ngata....but other then that, I feel Phil has done a fine Job with this franchise and deserves at least another 2 years.
Part2: The Coaching
Now on to coaching. 1st off firing Carthon was a good move, but it was simply a band-aid over the real problem. The real problem with this team is not only Romeo Crennell, but some of the players as well. Romeo Crennell is not a solution to the problem, he is part of the problem. I know people talk about continuity and such, but sometimes you have to know when it is time to cut your losses and move on, and it is time for this franchise to sever ties with Romeo Crennell...next year will be the same as this year if you do not. The guy is in over his head, and just does not understand enough about the offensive side of the ball to win us games on a consistent basis. when Butch Davis was here, in his 1st 2 years, he had a man by the name of Bruce Arians as his Offensive Coordinator. He brought the same offense to cleveland that Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis colts ran, and we were able to score points, and we finished 7-9 in his 1st season, and 9-7 in his second. Things went downhill for Butch when he fired Arians and Foge Fazio(2 veteran NFL coaches with years of experience that helped his team and career growth) Romeo does not know enough about the offensive side of the ball, and he does not have a true bona fide proven offensive coordinator to help him out, but even if he did Romeo plays a too conservative game for it to matter.
Romeo Crennell needs to go, the guy has won 1 division game in 2 years, 1...that is totally unacceptable. your divisional games are the most important, Butch Davis went 3-3 inside the AFC North division in his 1st 2 seasons with a team with "less talent" on paper then Romeo's current team. Romeo Crennell has proven he can not win games inside this division, his Defensive Strategy will not work here. He is running a "modified-prevent" he says he brought New england's Defense with him, but that is not true. Even on opening day with healthy players the man rarely blitzes, New england Blitzes a good bit, this D looks nothing like New England's and proves the point that Romeo was simply riding Bill Bellichik's coat-tails, and that D in New England was not Crennell's, but Bellichik's. Bellichik was calling the shots primarily on D, and still is.
It is quite clear that Romeo Crennell is not working out here. This team has gotten worse instead of better since he arrived. His failure to win a divisional game this year, and only 1 last year should most definitly throw red flags in your face. also, the team is blasting the coaching staff in the media for their "lackluster gameplanning" and "Ultra-conservativeness" should also grow some cause for concern on the direction of this franchise. Overall, Romeo Crennell and his staff needs to go. It just simply is not working, and giving the man another year will not change this. He just simply is not ready to be a Head coach. Knowing when to pull the plug is important, if you want to set this franchise back any more then it is, then stick with him and another losing season before you realize he isn't the answer.
part 3: The Players:
niw in the above paragraph i mentioned Crennell was "part of the problem" but not the entire problem. The other problem with this team is the some of the players on it. Andra Davis is my 1st and foremost pick. This guy is making a ton of money for "mediocre play" Andra Davis allready accepts being a "loser" and this brings down the attitude and such of the franchise. The guy only makes tackles 5-6 yards downfield, he can't shed a block to save his life, he always out of position, and he consistently takes the wrong angles on ball carriers. He has been in the league 4+ years, he should know these fundamentals by now or he never will. In other words, andra Davis is an over-rated player that would not start on any other team in the league except maybe the Colts and their soft D, but that is a big "maybe".
Another player who needs to go is Dennis Northcutt. The guy absolutely does not care if this team wins and the guy doesn't even try. that was evident last night. The guy also can not catch a pass to save his life and it is totally unacceptable. Other players on this team that need to go is Roye(he is too old, ineffective) Washington(should have never signed him) McGinest(Past his prime, doesn't have it anymore) we need to start afresh on our DL by playing young talent like Simon Frasier, we need to draft more DL and just let them play and develop. You need to fire and get rid of the people in the locker room that are losers/accept losing. This team has failed to bring in players with the right "attitude" to be cleveland Browns.
On Draft day/Draft interviews we need to ask prospective players...Do/can you absolutly Hate Baltimore/Pittsburgh with a passion and show it on the field? if the players have to think about it/don't have an answer for it, then don't draft them/sign them. Draft and sign players that are hard, that are willing to hate their division rival with every bone in their bodiy, guys that will flat out cream someone in the name of their team, players with heart. Forget about guys like Edwards and their Talent, i will take 6 players with the Heart of Kellen Winslow over 1 peyton Manning any day of the weak. That kind of heart carrys over to the rest of the team, and the team will perform better because they actually care. As of right now Mr.Lerner, they are many players on this team that lack Heart, they lack passion, and do not seem to care. that is the biggest problem with this franchise right now, that and Romeo.
We need to bring in players like Joey Porter, and Winslow...they don't have to be mega talented, just have their heart and willingness tom be tough and we will win more games then we lose...as good of a player as Kamerion Wimbley is...he does not have Sean Jones Heart....Heart is when Sean Jones Creames Hines Ward and hurts him, and does not feel bad about it...Heart is when Jones hits every players as hard as he can each and everytime they are near him...if our DL/LB played like Sean Jones does...we would be division champions..Sean Jones never gives up, there is still hope for Wimbley because he is a rookie...he has alot of sacks, but he does not show me the heart of a great player...have Jim Brown talk to him this offseason and help instill some of that into the kid.
but overall Mr. Randy Lerner, this team for the most part has been lackluster since we came back. Alot of the players you can clearly see do not care if they win or lose, and Crennell shows no passion on the sideline, and acts for the most part like he does not care. losing every division game except 1 game last year is unacceptable...1-11 inside our own division is the worst 2 year record span of divisional games in this franchise history. Romeo is clearly the worst coach this team has every had. it is clearly evident. No more excuses, these guys are professionals paid "Millions and Millions"of your hard earned dollars to make a winning team, and they have failed...not only you..but us fans. some people will make excuses for the coaches with injuries and such.....Bill Bellichik won a Super bowl with cornerbacks that were bagging grocery's in a grocery store when the season started...injuries are part of football..you must always plan for them ...always assume your best players are hurt all the time....that is romeo's Problem....Bill Walsh once said "You always stick with your origianl gameplan regardless of injuries...you just stick with your plan"...romeo has failed to do this...
If you want a winning team, hire a coach with NFL Head Coaching Expereince...Fire Romeo Crennell...and keep Phil Savage as GM...this team will go no where with Romeo...we need bona fide NFL head coaching expereince...and expereinced Coordinators and position coaches.
Look what Sean Payton did with the Saints...a team with about as much talent as us...he turned them around...but he is not a conservative coach...he is a coach with an "offensive background"
The next Head coach you hire, make sure it is a Coach with an "Offensive Background" I will tell you the perfect coach to hire....Steve Marricucci....the guy is a "proven NFL Head coach"..he had a bad stint in Detriot because of Matt Millen....the man had only 1 losing season in San Fran..the man understands offense....he will get more out of this team then Romeo will...the West coast Offense is a very "QB Friendly" system that Charlie/Anderson will excell at because it relies on high percentage passes....it will also mask alot of the problems with our OL because in the WCO the QB don't hold the ball any longer then 3 seconds because routes develop quickly because most of them are short timing routes. This will in turn open up our Run. It is much easier to find a good Defensive coordinator then it is to find an Offensive corrdinator...
Randy if you want to right this ship, Bring in Steve Marriucii...with Phil Drafting, the man will have a chance to succeed here, where Matt Millen in Detriot didn't give the man a fighting chance. He is good with young QB's, he did a pretty good job with Garcia and Tim Rattay. The WCO was designed to beat the 3-4 defense. Marricucci is the perfect answer to the Pittsburgh problem...the Browns need to head in another direction and go with an "Offensive minded coach" and Steve Marrucci fits the Bill. The guy will win football games for us, the guy will take riskes and will play to win instead of playing not to lose like romeo.
I don't know how much more losing i can take. Do you know how it feels to be laughed at and riddiculed because your a Browns fan? people laugh cuz you wear their colors? this team is a complete embarassment. Fellow Browns fans have been shoulding this burden long enough.
The Ball is in your court now.....will you make the the required changes and hire Steve..and begin to win games on a consistent basis?...or will your stick the statis quo and tank another season.....the choice is yours
but i beg you and implore you please bring in Steve or someone with NFL Head coaching Expereince...it's time to pull the plug on romeo...the guy just isn't working out...deep down in your heart...you know im right.

I just have to say a couple things.
The Browns had a winning season in 2002, our last playoff year. They went 9-7.
Part of the problem with this team is the turnover of coaches and front office. Since 99 we've had 3 HCs, 4 GMs, and 2 owners. I don't even want to count the turnover of assistant coaches and key coordinators, but I would estimate we've changed an O or D coordinator every 1 1/2 years. Two of the more successful teams in the league are on our division, and they've had the same HC during the time we've had 3. The bungles have only found success when they finally settled on a coach and he took over personel decisions from the owner.
Players are supposed to be replaced when they fail to perform. That process cannot be done overnight. It can't be done through FA, and the Browns have proven this for the past 7 years. Dan Snyder should take notice. We need to continue to have good drafts that bring up players and teach them to play the way Crennel wants, instead of trying to mesh players from different schools together.
Steve Marriucci was canned in SF and Detroit. He's proven he's a NFL coach of inadequate qualities. He took over SF and they slid to one of the worse teams in the league. He went to Detroit and made them no better. When you add this in with another coaching change and change of direction this team will have to do to become a WCO team, you'll be looking at another 2 years of failure before you want mooch fired.

No...he expects Mr. Randy Lerner to read it...duh I'm sure Lerner is a very active poster here, my bad ...duh Fact is these letters come out almost every week and are a joke; do you think Lerner and the rest of the FO will base any decision on a letter from a upset fan posted on a MB? Where was this letter last week? We were only one game better...basically in the same boat we are now. This is just a fan venting, nothing more, nothing less and thats fine but to think it will convince a owner of anything is being silly. And to think it will get read by Lerner on this board is even more crazy.

There is a rumor on the Tailgate, that the Riddler is Randy Lerner. I think you shouldn't underestimate, who reads the boards. Robert Gates, confessed on the Texas agg messageboard, that he had lurked and posted for over 4 years on their board, while he was the president of Texas A&M. One of his posts cracked me up telling the Blowhards too step up to the plate and put your money where your mouth is. Tailgate Randy Lerner rumor :0

I'm really getting tired of the accusation that Phil traded a draft pick to the Ravens, ALLOWING the Ravens to pick Nagata. Phil/Romeo wanted Wimbley... NOT... Nagata. Phil was picking one slot before the Ravens and made the Ravens think he was going to pick Nagata, so the Ravens offered their 1st Round (# 13) and a 6th round pick for our 1st round (# 12). If Phil picked Wimbley at 12...then the Raven's would get Nagata at 13 anyway.... as it was Phil got an extra pick out of the deal. What isn't understood here?????
A trade to another team and the Browns might not have gotten Wimbley... a player that Romeo wanted.... because he felt that Wimbley would provide a pass rush. If there were no trade, the Browns were going to pick Wimbley and the Ravens were going to get Nagata, NO MATTER WHAT. There were no other trade offers for the number 12 pick that would have guaranteed the Browns getting Wimbley, so the Savage traded down one spot, got the player he and Romeo wanted, PLUS an extra draft pick....from the Ravens.... What about the trade was not a good move???
My impression of the rest of the letter.....

I swear there is nobody on this board who "gets it." That has to have been the funniest damn satire of what actually goes on on this board since bread was sliced by a knife,...my stomach absolutely aches from the beating it took reading this.
People, re-read it with your sense(s) of humor in the "on" position; it is hilarious. I just gave it another once-over, and absolutely cannot wait for my wife and my son to hit reville so I can read it out loud to them.
God, it's great to be a Cleveland Brown fan--it's now actuallly more fun than ever !!

Well im glad you all think it is so funny
Because it was "Meant to be" LOL
You people can poke fun at me if you want to, but this letter i posted was my Literature final Exam for this quarter of college. We had to write a Satire...so i wrote this, and i figured i would post it on here for giggles and see what kind of responses i would get.
1 poster actually "Got it" and p.med me...OhRahJoice, and thank you for the wonderful compliment you gave me on it...i hope i get an A for my final for this. Another English teacher at my college told me it was a beautiful piece of work, so heres for the finger crossing.
Even though we aren't winning many games right now, alot of people are down, i figured maybe someone would get a laugh out of this...but it seems like only 1 of you actually "got it"....
don't take every post so seriously....lol
I was inspired to write this for my final by a a fellow classmate of mine who says such things about the Browns....i kinda used him to make this letter, drawing on my experiences of him. Ya know how hard it is to write an effective satire?..i worked on this everyday for a month...just to get the right words...too bad i made a few spelling errors, my copying skills just aren't that great
But on a serious note though, i think the Browns will get there eventually...when who knows..but eventually we will win our share...the law of averages is in our favor, were due soon enough
good day

Yea, right i hope i get an A for my final for this. Another English teacher at my college told me it was a beautiful piece of work If you turned this in as a assignment, your screwed. The punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors are horrible. And if a English teacher looked at this and gave it praise their blessing, I think they need to look for a new job. Its a message board so I don't make a big deal over those things, but if you are claiming you turned this in for a assignment I call BS.

I agree w/Spooky. There is no way an English professor said this was a beautiful piece. It would be considered flawed at the Jr. High level.
Nice try, though.

I say we sign Mr. Brown as a DB, just look at how good he backpeddles Lets just hope his hips are not to stiff.

Be sure to let us know what grade you get on this paper. Good luck.

Now look who's backpedaling,....
If this kid set his professor up by letting him know what goes on on this board, it would be hard to not give him an A.
I think there are some of you who aren't happy that Knight actually bamboozled you, so now you question his integrity---
Yes, the spelling and grammar are not what we expect of college grads; maybe this problem runs deeper.
I like to think he did it on purpose,...just like some on this board do.
But no, instead of admitting you got duped, you throw more stones from your glass houses.

It doesn't read much like satire, though. Satire is not supposed to be too subtle, dude. And with spelling, grammar and worse, factual errors... has to be given a failing grade. Sorry KoB - it's a piece of crap.

Rumple, what I'm finding amusing is the way you're trying to spin that straw into gold!

Now look who's backpedaling,.... Get outta here w/that BS. First of all, his "paper" is not funny. Secondly, he wrote it the day after the Steeler game. Are you telling me that his prof gave him the assignment Thursday night? LOL Third, he began sentences w/lower case letters. His grammar is pathetic. His sentence structure is below elementary. His spelling is poor. He uses dots to connect thoughts......that's something we do on the board, but not in a collegiate paper. Next, he has been critical of RAC in the past. It's hardly satire. It's his honest opinion. Finally, let's just say that it is satirical. Good, because now it doesn't belong in the Pure Football forum and the refs can delete this nonsense.

I still think it was pretty funny. It has already proven its point,....look at the responses it has elicited. People attacking people they don't even know from behind the security of a laptop.
Absolutely hilarious.
Go ahead and get it deleted. I will be glad to re-post it in "Tailgate" for anyone else who may or may not have a sense of humor.

I have a sense of humor, thank you. But, this "letter" isn't funny...trust me.
