I've got news for y'all, there HAVE ALWAYS been gays and trans in the Military. Before the sex change thing was a reality, most trans were thought of as crossdressing gays I suppose but the were always there.
I remember knowing both types when I was in and neither were something they would admit but they were there.

My personal feeling is I dont really care if they ban transexuals from the military for medical reasons.
My issue is why make a big spectacle of it? I think this was clearly a big political move to pander to the religious right. Because it could have been way more quietly done to just change the policies on non essential medical procedures.

Sorry, that is not valid criteria for analysis. it is to me. if someone isn't willing to stand beside a person who is also willingingly putting their life on the line because of a perceived social/mental issue, then what/who else will they also put their personal opinion over the service and well being of fellow soldiers and the country? that's absolutely a valid criteria.

That's why I see the common sense way of addressing this issue is to stop payment on all elective surgeries and medications in the military.
Not only would it stop what some claim is "the cost associated with it", but also the cost of many things that seem to not fall under what is necessary. The military spends almost three times as much on Viagra as they do transsexual surgery. I'm sure there are many other things that qualify as cost saving measures that are not necessary.
In this way, everyone who wants to serve can serve, but all who want unnecessary medications and surgeries couldn't pass that cost onto the taxpayer.
