Will be interesting to see how this works out. I mean the two main things the Republicans ran on were repeal and replace Obamacare and Immigration. We all know how repealing and replacing ObamaCare worked out. Is the Immigration issue going to be yet, another GOP failure? Judging from the recent press conference with WH advisor, Stephen Miller it certainly looks to be yet, another angry white guy/Keystone Kops moment.

Shame it impacts people's lives though...

Yup... jobs the migrant labor used to do like farm labor, fruit picking, cleaning, dry walling, lawn work, dish washing and such. You know like the work our black slaves did before 1860's. Only they may get minimum wages at best. This is seasonal work and most will be part time employee's not even making Min wage. Plus we know everybody here is for raising the minimum wages right?

Then we'll have all those laid off seasonal workers collecting unemployment for 4-6mo's until the next season. That should help the economy even more right? This is great! Bigly!

Repeal and replace has been a huge cluster funk that the republicans have screwed up as much as possible so far. We are on full agreement there.

Immagration is another story I believe we are making positive headway there.

LA made $1.3B in illegal immigrant welfare payouts in just 2 years

Illegal immigrant families received nearly $1.3 billion in Los Angeles County welfare money during 2015 and 2016, nearly one-​quarter of the amount spent on the county’s entire needy population, according to data obtained by Fox News.

The data was obtained from the county Department of Public Social Services -- which is responsible for doling out the benefits -- and gives a snapshot of the financial costs associated with sanctuary and related policies.

The sanctuary county of Los Angeles is an illegal immigration epicenter, with the largest concentration of any county ​in the nation, according to a study from the Migration Policy Institute. ​The county also allows illegal immigrant parents with children born in the United States to seek welfare and food stamp benefits.

Robert Rector, a Heritage Foundation senior fellow who has written extensive studies on poverty and illegal immigration, said the costs represent “the tip of the iceberg.”

He said the costs of education, police and fire, medical, and subsidized housing can total $24,000 per year in government spending per family, much more than would be paid in taxes.

“They get $3 in benefits for every $1 they spend,” Rector said.

I live in the State of Montana and several years ago I along with 80% of Montana voters voted on a bill that concerned immigration...mostly undocumented aliens collecting benefits of U.S citizens. However:


Montana court strikes down anti-immigrant law, allows undocumented to get services

Montana state officials are not allowed to report the immigration status of people seeking state services, the state’s high court ruled on Tuesday.


In a unanimous decision, the court struck down the last piece of a voter-approved law meant to deter undocumented immigrants from living and working in the “Treasure State.” It upholds a 2014 ruling stating that the law denying unemployment benefits, university enrollment and other services to people who are in the country illegally was unconstitutional.

The Montana Supreme went further, rejecting the one remaining position that required state workers to report to federal immigration officials the names of applicants who are in the U.S. undocumented.

"The risk of inconsistent and inaccurate judgments issuing from a multitude of state agents untrained in immigration law and unconstrained by any articulated standards is evident," Justice Patricia Cotter wrote in the opinion.

The Montana Legislature sent the anti-immigrant measure to the 2012 ballot, where it was approved by 80 percent of voters.

The new law required state officials to check the immigration status of applicants for unemployment insurance benefits, crime victim services, professional or trade licenses, university enrollment and financial aid and services for the disabled, among other things.

The law required state officials to deny services to people found to be in the country illegally, and to turn over their names to immigration officials for possible deportation proceedings. The law used the term "illegal aliens," which is not found in federal immigration laws and became the focal point of the lower and higher courts' rulings.

It defined "illegal alien" as a person who is not a U.S. citizen who unlawfully entered or unlawfully remained in the United States. In the lawsuit brought by the Montana Immigrant Justice Alliance, several plaintiffs said they arrived in the U.S. illegally but have since obtained permanent residence status.

They argued they would still be considered "illegal aliens" under the state law, even though the Department of Homeland Security considers them lawful immigrants.

The courts ruled the state was attempting to meddle in an area of federal jurisdiction using a term that is unconstitutional because it conflicts with the federal laws. The entire law is pre-empted by federal immigration laws, the Montana Supreme Court opinion said.

Plaintiffs' attorney Shahid Haque-Hausrath said the decision sends a message that the state has no business creating its own immigrant enforcement schemes.

"The law was a discriminatory attempt to drive immigrants out of the state, and would have unjustly targeted immigrants with valid federal immigration status," he said.
State Sen. David Howard, R-Park City, the sponsor of the original referendum, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Montana Attorney General Tim Fox, whose office defended the law throughout the proceedings, said state legislators were prompted to place the referendum on the 2012 ballot by what he called the U.S. government's failure to properly and lawfully regulate immigration.

"This case is concluded, but it remains to be seen if the federal government will ever fulfill its duty," Fox said in a statement.

The EB-5 visa allows immigrants a path to a green card if they invest more than $500,000 in a project that creates jobs in the United States.

Lets see the WH Adviser's (Kushner) and his company offers EB-5 Green Cards for $500k down payment on Luxury condo units, just hours after the POTUS signed the appropriations measure to allow it. They all knew to minute this was a quick money grab. They were there in China waiting to pounce and be the first to cash in on it.

Nope nothing wrong with that besides it's a conflict of interest. And they are being investigated like everyone else in the WH.

Kushner and company is profiting bigly! .... bigly! Off of the very first piece of major legislation....... the very first piece of major legislation .....this administration signed. And he did it just hours after it was signed.

So what you and this administration wants American's to believe is the Kushner's didn't know those provisions where buried in this legislation and they just happened to be in China to sell their buildings offering green cards to their buyers on the same day as just a coincidence? Whatever. This is a huge conflict of interest and Kushner will lose his security clearance because of it.

I guess I'll need to read up on the Kushner EB-5 thing.

My understanding is that since 1990, foreigners that agreed to invest in a for profit business here in the u.s., that would employ at least 10 people full time, COULD get an expedited EB-5 visa.

I was not aware that EB-5's were available if all you did was buy a condo. If that's what you're saying.

I just wonder if buying a condo for yourself equals "investing in a for profit business"?

A common sense position and long overdue. Immigration policy should revolve around what is best for Americans and the country as a whole. The idea of bringing people over who can't support themselves and who bog down our social services, instead of contributing to them, is self-defeating.

That said, we'll see if this bill passes through Congress. I have my doubts-- some spineless GOPers will defect on it and Democrats will probably be unanimously opposed.

That will help us to know who to vote for in upcoming primaries.

Canada to set up border camp as number of asylum seekers swells

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canada has deployed soldiers to erect tents near the U.S. border to temporarily house hundreds of asylum seekers crossing from New York state, officials said on Wednesday, an influx of mostly Haitians prompted by fear of deportation by the U.S. government.

Around 250 asylum seekers are arriving each day in Montreal, the largest city in Canada's mainly French-speaking Quebec province. Quebec has opened its Olympic Stadium, a former hospital and a school among other places to house people.

Heated tents will accommodate up to 500 people as Canadian border officials process mainly Haitians walking into Canada from the United States.

Nearly 100 soldiers will be in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, across the border from Champlain, New York, to set up the tents and add to temporary facilities already organized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canadian Border Services Agency.

The Canadian Armed Forces were aware of the difficult situation that requires significant resources, said Daniel Le Bouthillier, a spokesman at the Department of National Defence.

The military would have no role in security matters, Le Bouthillier said in emailed statement. "When the site is completed, the military will return to their home base."

Hundreds of Haitians have crossed into Quebec in recent weeks, spurred partly by false accounts of asylum seekers being able to immediately obtain residency after entering Canada.

"There is an enormous amount of fake information circulating saying that it is easy to come to Canada," said Marjorie Villefranche, general manager of Maison d'Haiti, a Montreal community center that assists Haitian immigrants.

They are hearing that Canada doesn't deport people."

The Canadian immigration ministry, on its Facebook page on Aug. 5, discouraged illegal entries and noted that messages posted elsewhere online suggesting that Canada is inviting people to seek refugee status were wrong.

Canadian authorities accepted 50.5 percent of the 410 refugee claims by Haitians heard in 2016, government data showed.

Like the United States, Canada had a deportation ban on Haitians after a 2010 earthquake. More than 50,000 people affected by Haiti's earthquake have been allowed to remain in the United States under "temporary protected status" according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This year, the department extended their status through next January, but officials said in May that people covered under that status should begin acquiring travel documents to return to Haiti.

Canada's deportation ban, which was enacted after a 2004 coup and extended after the earthquake, expired in August 2016. Many Haitians who had been living in Canada for years have since raced to get permanent residency on humanitarian or compassionate grounds.

In the first half of 2017, more than 4,300 asylum seekers walked across the U.S. border into Canada. Even before the flow of Haitian asylum seekers Canada was on track to have the most refugee claims in almost a decade.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a tougher stance on immigration with plans to cut legal immigration by 50 percent over 10 years.
