With Ed Reynolds out for an extended period with his injury, who would you want to see get reps at the free safety position?
McCourty.

McCourty. Given the question, this is my answer too. However with Ed slotted at FS, I think the guy that "will actually" step up there is that Nacua kid.

Jabrill Peppers - DB - Browns
ESPN Cleveland reports first round S Jabrill Peppers' role is a "work in progress." Peppers has been repping with the second and third team defenses through the first week of training camp. It's not a great sign he hasn't passed Ibraheim Campbell, but the Browns are still counting on him to become the starter. Calvin Pryor is also in the mix at strong safety opposite Derrick Kindred.

Gregg asked everyone on defense to learn two positions, so I bet he's already taken some reps there that went unnoticed, but I bet he'll be corner all the way when the 53 man gets set.
Media wont miss something like that. lol.

I'm wondering if there's any chance we see Boddy-Calhoun at safety. Not sure about the tackling, but he has some ball skills. I would find it hard to believe we are going to change around our Starting CBs. Haden, Taylor and Boughty at the slot. Them are our 3. FS will come from somewhere else.

FWIW Keep in mind that Myles Garret has been taking reps with the 2's as well. Its how Williams is handling the rookies. Wednesday it was a big news day cause Garrett was elevated to the 1's cause he earned it. And that is from the Overall number one pick of the draft.
Njoku won't start for several years if you ask me mostly cause freaking DeValve stepped it up...I think we will all be pleasantly surprised with his game this year.

This. Myles Garrett just moved up to take 1st team snaps. Des Bryant just moved up to take 1st team snaps. Kizer is (technically) 3rd on the depth chart.
I think it's far more telling when people get moved around vs where people are right now.
Re. our FS position. While I would love to see Haden get moved back there, we could only do that if we had a glut of talent at the CB position (we don't). Hopefully we can draft or acquire young talent to man the #1CB spot, pushing Haden somewhere else.

I read/heard somewhere that bunch of different CBs (Haden, McCourty, iirc Taylor and Boddy) took some snaps at S, it was very ambiguous though as to the extent of their snaps there With Ed Reynolds out for an extended period with his injury, who would you want to see get reps at the free safety position? Someone who is not currently on the roster, unless that Nacua guy can play. I can't comment on him because I don't remember him from his college games and I didn't research him. I wish one of the local reporters or CBD would dig a little deeper into the Safety situation, especially with Ed Reynolds being out. His absence thins out and already barren position group. Of the options on the roster right now I would like to see Nicua, Peppers and McCourty get work at FS. But it appears that Kindred is taking the FS reps? I find this revelation odd because of badly he struggled at FS last year, I figured he would be at the very back of the FS line. *shrugs* but who knows? Time will tell but i would bet that Kindred isn't the week 1 FS.

FWIW I don't think that 'sign' means anything in terms of reading into Peppers development. Its an organizational thing with making rookies earn it.

the safety depth chart should get some clarity tonight at the scrimmage. it's supposed to be: 1s on O vs 2s on D 2s on O vs 1s on D

Any guesses for the line-up in the secondary?
What would you do if different?
#2 DEF
FS-Campbell
SS-Peppers
CB-Boddy CB-Burley NCB-Trey Caldwell
#1 DEF
FS-Kindred (based on reports)
SS-Pryor (based on reports)
CB-Haden CB-McCourty NCB-Taylor

Brown team is listed as the "1st team"
The Brown team DBs are:
DB Briean Boddy-Calhoun
DB Jamar Taylor
DB Jabrill Peppers
DB Joe Haden
DB Ibraheim Campbell
DB Derrick Kindred
DB Jason McCourty
so this report: ESPN Cleveland reports first round S Jabrill Peppers' role is a "work in progress."

already looks incorrect for listing Pryor as in the mix to start next to Kindred when Pryor is on the "White team"/2nd team and Kindred is on the "Brown" team/1st team.

Starting secondary was good in the scrimmage:
FS -Kindred
SS -Campbell
NB-Jamar Taylor
CB-Haden
CB-Jason McCourty
Peppers came in and played with the 1st unit along side Kindred and Campbell and to some snaps at FS

1. Tackling myriad roles: Much has been said about Jabrill Peppers’ potentially diverse uses on defense, special teams and offense. He tackles, he returns kicks, he handles the ball. Well, his versatility in Gregg Williams’ defense alone is giving coaches caution about overloading the rookie safety from Michigan. Peppers’ underlying strength is tackling. But coaches believe his ball skills – so evident in his return game – make him valuable, too, as a deep safety, despite his one career interception at Michigan. So he showed up at free safety, second team, on Hue Jackson’s first unofficial depth chart. “A lot of players can physically do a lot of things,” safeties coach Jerod Kruse said. “It comes into question sometimes the mental overload when you’re asking him to do a myriad of things. Right now, [on defense] we’re working him in some different situations in strong, free and the nickel safety position. It’s a constant communication back and forth with him to make sure if you’re feeling overload we have to take a little off of you. As we get into the season, we’ll have a really focused approach for what his role will be in that game, and who knows what it will be.” Peppers is open to doing anything the coaches want. But he points out, “I pride myself on tackling.” http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland/post/...weeks-game-plan

I think it's hard enough for a rookie to learn a single position in the NFL much less multiple positions or responsibilities. Peppers didn't really have a definable position in the NCAA and now they wish to follow that same pattern in the NFL? It kind of sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

What if his position is that he doesn't have a position? This is obviously an exception, but Deone Bucannon was in a similar "position" for the Cardinals his rookie season and was fine.

I think Peppers will be fine. He's gonna play "safety" in this defense meaning based on the look he could play in the box or deep or in some match-ups over a slot.
It might be easier to for the staff to refer to him by a position. as opposed the actual places he could line up. I don't think he's being put in an out of the ordinary predicament in regards to playing S.
Peppers imo is likely to be the starting "SS" I think Landon Collins is a good comp in terms of skill set and possible playing style.

Unless we are besieged with injuries to the O skill players I don't think Peppers sees the light of day on that side of the ball. Which is a big take away from his college repatoir.
Punt return and Kick offs is not going to be too tasking.
If need be we have others to handle those duties so I'm sure he'll be ok! He will learn our D.

I tend to agree, unless Hue decides to get too cute (as he was known to do at times last year). I could see him trying to put Peppers in the backfield and motion Duke to the slot or whatever.

for the record...on the big hit...to me it looks clean but I think the refs will throw the flag as he launched his body at the WR as they want to protect the WR although I could have sworn it has to be a high hit neck and above???
Props to Hall for hanging on to the pass!

Jabrill Peppers - DB - Browns
Browns coach Hue Jackson said first-round S Jabrill Peppers is "getting better every day." Filling in at strong safety for Ibraheim Campbell (concussion), Peppers reportedly had himself a practice on Monday, making a big hit, breaking up a couple passes, and intercepting another. "I think he’s showing you he can play anywhere," Jackson said. "I think he’s a very dynamic player and I’m glad he’s here." Peppers has not officially cracked the starting lineup yet, but it seems just like a matter of time.

I like hearing this about Peppers, and am hoping it's not just a coach spinning positive vibes about a rookie. It'd be awesome if Peppers turns into a good player

I really do hate to be the wet blanket, but that looked like helmet2helmet. I didn't see the slow-mo, but given the way Hall's helmet moved through the hit, and the flakiness of NFL refs, he's probably going to get flagged for that.

Props to Hall for hanging on to the pass! Yeah, I loved the way Hall held onto the ball, and reportedly just bounced back up. I think that he would have had a chance to make the team last year ..... so it will be interesting to see how he does this year. One thing that helps a lot of these young players is the new cut down rules, where they get the entire camp to show that they belong. For many, instead of being cut before the 4th preseason game, they get a shot to show something in that game.

Video: Kruse: Allow guys to do what they do best
Justin Currie, who joined the Browns practice squad in December, could tell there was something special about Cleveland following a tryout with the team late last season.
The second-year safety and former Western Michigan standout said it all reminded him of home back in Big Rapids, Michigan, and so did the people working inside the team’s facility.
“Right away, after that tryout I was like, ‘I really hope I end up going here.’ And when I got the call, I was ecstatic," he said last week.
"From meeting everybody on the staff, to the main office to the equipment guys to the weight room guys, everything just felt right. And being from Michigan, not far away, even the city of Berea here and Cleveland reminds me a lot of home. And so right away, that really hit me and the guys on the team are great. It’s a lot of young guys on the team trying to prove something and I'm right there with them."
Indeed, Currie has emerged as something of a pleasant surprise throughout training camp, earning reps with the first- and second-team defense as the Browns start to curate their 53-man roster. An undrafted free agent in 2015 who was waived by the Giants because of an injury, Currie has found something of a niche under new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has laid out an earn-your-keep philosophy when it comes to playing time.
“I’ll tell you this, he's a surprising young man to most. I think he does some really good things,” assistant defensive backs coach Jerod Kruse said. “He’s really come into his own in the scheme and he’s comfortable in it.”
That has been evident as the Browns prepare for Monday’s preseason game against New York. In the team’s most-recent unofficial depth chart, Currie is listed as a starter opposite of Derrick Kindredfollowing an injury to Ibraheim Campbell (concussion) in Thursday’s opener.
Ask Currie about that rise up the depth chart, though, and he’ll shrug it off. “It’s nice to see that," he said, "but it just shows you there’s work to be done."
That workmanlike approach has served Currie well as he competes for a roster spot in a room that includes Kindred, Campbell, rookie and 25th overall pick Jabrill Peppers and Calvin Pryor III.
A two-star prospect at Big Rapids High School, Currie blossomed into a pivotal player an hour-and-a-half north at Western Michigan, amassing 340 tackles, five interceptions and 11 pass breakups in 37 starts. He was also key in helping the upstart Broncos finish 8-5 his senior season after a 1-11 campaign in 2013.
When Currie went undrafted the following spring, he said “that really didn’t mean much to me.”
“It’s great to get drafted," he continued, "but I’ve always come from a background of with a chip on my shoulder. I came from a small town in Big Rapids — a lot of people have never heard of it. It was just another one of those scenarios, even coming out of high school into college, being from a small town going to a D1 school, there’s a lot to prove. So then going undrafted was just another one of those things where you have something to prove.”
So far in camp, Currie has earned the confidence of the coaching staff. “There's a high level of trust there,” Kruse said. “His physical toughness and effort is never in question. You're going to see him make more plays than you may think”
And as Currie continues to draw attention, he emphasized now is not the time to grow complacent.
“I think it’s really about the journey and not the end result," he said. "It’s always the journey and trying to work toward the end result but you got to remember there's always so much work you can do and that needs to be done.”
Another diamond in the rough?

Yeah, he fits the role of a SS more than a FS obviously, at least based on measurements. I wonder what his sparq was

We may have found 1 or 2 diamonds in the rough in our D- backfield. Along with Coley, Leslie and Dayes that's pretty good.

I was incorrect in my assumption that it would be hard to duplicate the success that former undrafted players have enjoyed in the resent past seasons...I was wrong in my assumptions. The thing that lead me to that assumption initially was the fact that our roster has had an influx of talent through the past two drafts and FA, to go along with the additions of UDFA already. In summary; Some good players will not make the cuts this year.

Not trying to be a downer, but it's kinda early to be proclaiming that we have so many good players, especially considering we went 1 and 15 last year.

I liked what I saw of Currie the other night. He stood out in a positive way. I managed to make an OTA this summer and he caught my eye. I said to myself who is this guy draped all over our TE's. His size is visible vs guys like Holtz or Devalve.
